Body Language and Behavior Analysis No. 4757: Donald Trump Handshake with Benjamin Netanyahu: "When I think about you, I touch myself" (apologies to Divinyls) – Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence

Donald Trump met with War Criminal and Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago today. Along with violating the Logan Act, Trump exhibited some bizarre body language behavior.

At first glance, you may think this Trump-Netanyahu handshake is an example of a "double-hander" – such as the one exemplified here, from Trump and Kim Jong Un's meeting on 30 June 2019. But you'd be very wrong...

Look carefully at Trump's left hand – his left hand is on top of his *own* right hand – and Netanyhu's hand is on the bottom.

While this is another example of Trump's attempt at dominance –  it's also extremely over-compensatory that betrays his profound narcissism. But there's other thought-emotions going on here ...

Trump's right hand is already on top of Netanyahu's – so Trump was already displaying dominance. The meeting is taking place in the US (Trump's country, not Netanyahu's) – and at Mar-a-Lago (Trump's "home") – Yet Trump still feels the need for additional dominance.

But why is Trump touching *his own* hand in this moment? This dynamic is profoundly Narcissistic. Trump is showing us that he would rather touch himself (during a handshake!) than touch Netanyahu (which also shows his distrust of Netanyahu).

Additionally and perhaps most importantly, covering one's right hand (Trump's dominant hand) with the left hand is indicative of his surreptitious behavior.

This handshake variation is quite odd – even for Trump. It's also quite rare. So rare that you'll probably never see it again (except perhaps from Trump again).

SUMMARY: Donald Trump's bizarre self-touching handshake with Benjamin Netanyahu today indicates:

•  Trump's attempt at Dominance
•  Trump's extreme Narcissism
•  Trump's distrust of Netanyahu
•  Clandestine behavior of Trump's

Body Language Analysis No. 3947: Benjamin Netanyahu's reaction to Donald Trump's statement, "I never mentioned the Word or Name 'Israel' " - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, while standing next to Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump said, "I never mentioned the Word or Name 'Israel' - never mentioned it, during that conversation - they were all saying I did - so ya had another story wrong. Never mentioned the word 'Israel'..."

President Trump was, of course, referring to his recent meeting with Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office. It's alleged that Trump disclosed classified information to the Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador - and in so doing also, directly or indirectly, also revealed the source(s) of the classified information.

Notice as President Trump said, "... during that conversation ...", President Netanyahu was turning toward Trump while jutting his jaw forward. A "Jaw Jut" virtually always indicates a surge in adrenaline.

When it comes to his conduct on camera, President Netanyahu is probably the most experienced and skilled high-profile head-of-state in the World. Yet we still see this body language red flag. It begs the question: Why was Netanyahu experiencing an adrenaline surge?

The Israeli leader was also simultaneously displaying an "Inward Lip Roll". An inward lip roll (ILR) is a sign that the subconscious/edge-of-consciousness trying to suppress strong feelings (both from being expressed outwardly - but also internally). What emotion was Netanyahu suppressing?

During this same nonverbal cluster, Netanyahu was also blinking with prolonged duration. This is a psychological blocking behavior - indicating he strongly disapproves of what he is thinking, seeing, and/or hearing.

Summary: President Benjamin Netanyahu's nonverbal behavior during President Trump's statement indicates he had strong opposition to the US leader making such an open declaration.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3868: Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, The West Bank and Anxiety - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

From a body language perspective, during Donald Trump's and Benjamin Netanyahu's joint press conference on 15 February 2017, there are many moments of interest - two that share a particular nonverbal are discussed here.

What follows is two, non-contiguous, portions of the Press Conference's transcript, followed by a partial nonverbal analysis.

The time notations are coordinated in reference to the above video version of that event.

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU: (continuing at 17:43)

"So I want this to change. I want those two perquisites of peace - substance, not labels, I want them re-instated. But if anyone believes that I, as prime minister of Israel, responsible for the security of my country, would blindly walk into a Palestinian terrorist state - that seeks the destruction of my country, they're gravely mistaken.

The two perquisites of peace, recognition of the Jewish state and Israel’s  security needs, west of the  Jordan, they remain pertinent. We have to look for new ways, new ideas, on how to re-instate and how to move peace forward. And I believe that the great opportunity for peace comes from a regional approach from involving our new found Arab partners in the pursuant of a broader peace and peace will the Palestinians."

Beginning at 18:12 and until 18:19, as he says, "they remain pertinent. We have to look for new ways, new ideas, on how", Prime minister Netanyahu puts his left hand in his left hip (front) pocket of his pants.

And later in the press conference...

DONALD TRUMP: (finishing his answer, 26:23) "... And you're going to see a lot of love. You're going to see a lot of love. OK? Thank you".

Finishing his answer, President Trump then turns to Prime Minister Netanyahu

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU: "I believe that the, ah, issue of the settlements is not the core of the conflict, ah, nor does it really drive the conflict. I think it's an issue that has to be resolved in the context of peace negotiations. Ah, and I think it also, we also are gonna speak about it, President Trump and I, so we can arrive, ah, at an understanding so we don't keep on bumping into each other all the time on this issue and we're going to discuss this."

Ah, on the, ah, question you said -- you just came back, ah, with your question to the problem that I said. It's the label. What does (inaudible name ) mean by two states, OK? Wha, what does he mean?

Beginning at 26:32 as he says, "ah",  both of the Prime Minster's hand are inserted into their respective front pants pockets. At 26:45 when he says, "arrive", his left hand comes out. His right hand stays in until 26:59 when Netanyahu says, "back".

When it comes to public speaking, Prime Minister Netanyahu is one of the most experienced Heads-of-State in the World. He's also has a considerably alpha personality. He is naturally, very accustomed to speaking under pressure. Yet, he is, of course, human. And thus he subject to human foibles and physiology - and his body language is no exception.

When a person (highly biased toward the male gender) puts his hands in his pants pockets when they are speaking, it is NOT an attempt to appear suave or confident - rather it signals a heightened level of anxiety. It signals a shift from a relative alpha state - to a more beta emotional tone - and to lower levels of confidence. This is especially true when this nonverbal signal occurs on stage or on-camera. If they are in the midst of speaking, once the hands (or hand) enters into the pocket - you can be sure that the subject which immediately follows elicits thought-emotions of significant anxiety.

It's important to mention that the "hand in pocket" maneuver may occur while the person is listening to another person speak, it is either in response to what they just heard - or what they are about to say in response.

Summary: Prime Minister Netanyahu's nonverbal behavior in the above-discussed segments of the recent press conference demonstrate he has significant anxiety regarding:

1) Coming up with ideas for the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process

2) Settlement activity in the West Bank (contrary to his statement)

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3850: Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump and Michael Flynn - Press Conference - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Wednesday President Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The two heads-of-state also held a press conference, from which an entire semester's worth of nonverbal behavior could be cited and studied. The following includes but one example (yet an intriguing one).

Donald Trump (beginning at 10:29): We'll take a couple of questions. David Brody, that's - Christian Broadcasting. David?

David Brody: Thank you, Mr. President, Mr. Prime Minister.  Ah, Both of you have cra- criticized [stutters] the Iran nuclear deal and at times even called for its repeal. I'm wondering if you're concerned at all, a, a, as it relates to not just the um, national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who is recently [stutters] no longer here, but also some of those events that have going on with communication of Russia - if that is gonna hamper this deal at all and whether or not it would keep Iran from becoming a nuclear state?...

During 10:56, as Mr. Brody says, "... here, but also ...", President Trump displays a facial expression that is brief - yet not quite as short as a microexpression

Specifically, the left side of his mouth pulls up and laterally. This is a combined emotional expression of Contempt (approximately 60%) - amalgamated with some Regret (about 40%).

Contempt can be best described colloquially as a unilateral "snarl" with the corner of the mouth pulling primarily upward - along with a unilateral, mid-facial tension (e.g. the region between his left upper lip and his nose) as well as a component of unilateral (his left again) nostril flaring (dilation).

Regret can at first glance look similar to contempt - however in the case of regret, the corner of the mouth and mid-face vector primarily laterally (as opposed to mostly upward with contempt).

Summary: It's not possible here to determine whether Donald Trump's contempt is directed at the journalist (David Brody), Michael Flynn (somewhat doubtful, since he's also feeling regret) or other personnel (or issues, such as communications with Russia) involved with Flynn's situation.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3664: Benjamin Netanyahu, Viktor Yanukovych and Vladimir Putin - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

These two images demonstrate a stark contrast between a man who is beholden and another who is not.

The image above was taken shortly after Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power as the President of Ukraine. He then fled to Russia where this image was taken shortly thereafter. From a body language perspective note the angle of Yanukovych's upper legs and the relative distance between his knees and compare these to Vladimir Putin's. Moreover notice the toe-in configuration (aka pigeon-toe) of Mr. Yanukovych versus the relatively wide-splayed angle of Mr. Putin's feet.

Now compare these nonverbal clusters to the image below where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting with President Putin - also on Russian Soil. Although the angle of Mr. Putin's thighs are also wider than Netanyahu's, the disparity between the two men is not nearly as dramatic as the above scenario. Notice as well the angle of Mr. Netanyahu's feet - for they are not toed-in as are Mr. Yanukovych's.

Summary: While there are other nonverbal signals being displayed in these images, we can say conclusively thatViktor Yanukovych's emotional tone is beta and submissive to Vladimir Putin. Mr. Yanukovych acquiesces to what he views as Mr. Putin's relative alpha status by the manner in which he's sitting. Benjamin Netanyahu however, does not concede status to President Putin and views himself to be Putin's equal. Yanukovych is projecting a low emotional comfort and lower confidence while Netanyahu is emotionally comfortable and of higher confidence.

Nonverbal Communication Quiz No. 3120: Benjamin Netanyahu Speaking Before Joint Session of Congress - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Nearly everyone is aware that today Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech before a joint session of the United States Congress as well as the controversial manner in which he was invited. If you watched the speech (the full video is below), you may have noticed that for a large percentage of the time, the Israeli Prime Minister spoke with his mouth in an asymmetrical configuration - biased to his right. A momentary asymmetrical mouth while speaking has a modestly long list of nonverbal possibilities (depending on the other body language with which it is clustered).

However when we see such asymmetry for longer durations - as Mr. Netanyahu exemplified today - it has a different set of causes. These are:

1. A Medical or Anatomical cause
2. Idiosyncratic to the individual (habit or tic)
3. Insincerity or deception
4. A manifestation of Bravado (Nonverbal Swagger)

Do you know how to differentiate between these four causes? Which of these were applicable to Benjamin Netanyahu today?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3119: Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama - What Body Language Tells Us (PHOTOS)

Much has been made of the relationship - or the lack thereof - between Benjamin Netanyahu and Barack Obama. This image was taken during a 2010 visit of the Israeli Prime Minister. While this is only one photo from one occasion - and it's always VERY important to look at the gestalt - this is very consistent and representative of one and a key aspect of Netanyahu's body language - and thus also his mindset.

Note Netanyahu's body position relative to Obama. Although we cannot see his feet in this photo, from the position of his legs we can say with a high degree of confidence that his feet are pointed towards the camera and NOT to Obama. However the U.S. President's body is shifted considerably towards his counterpart and at least his left foot is pointed in the Israeli leader's direction.

Human beings point their bodies - the torso, lower abdomen, hips, knees - and particularly our feet towards those to whom we're attracted (not applicable here of course) or in the direction of those whom we respect. Mr. Netanyahu's body language is markedly disparate from his words. When the nonverbal and the verbal languages are in disagreement - it's the nonverbal which always tells the truths.

What other significant nonverbal signals do you see in this photo?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2970: Benjamin Netanyahu & Barack Obama at the White House - What Netanyahu Really Feels (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington D.C. today to discuss a Mideast peace agreement and a nuclear deal with Iran. In the short video above he is seen making a statement at the White House with Barack Obama by his side. And although the Israeli Prime Minister's words were that of unity and thanks, he displayed a classic nonverbal signal of disgust. His words were not congruent with his thought-emotions.

This image (and its close up below) show clear disgust on Netanyahu's face. It lasts for less than a few tenths of a second during the 0:07 - 0:08 segment of the video, thus it is classified as a microexpression. This is subconsciously generated and while the Prime Minister is a skilled public speaker with a skilled "poker face", strong feelings are impossible to suppress entirely and constantly - so they leak out. And if you know what to look - you will see what virtually everyone will miss.

At 0:03 Netanyahu begins, "Mr. President first I want to thank you. I want to thank you for the ah [pause][disgust microexpression] unflinching support you gave Israel during our difficult days ...."

This particular example of disgust is very evanescent and not fully formed. A more extreme disgust display includes varying degrees of:

•    Wrinkles on the bridge of the Nose
•    Accentuated nasal labial furrows on the sides of the nose
•    Lower Lip is raised and protruded
•    Upper Lip is raised (sometimes very high) and slightly protruded
•    The upper lip and the area between the upper lip and nose (mustache area) is tightened
•    Flaring of the nostrils
•    Lowering of the eyebrows (but they are not drawn together as in anger)
•    Crow’s Feet on the lateral sides of the eyes
•    Chin wrinkling/dimpling
•    Forehead relaxed
•    Pulling the arms close to the torso, with a bending of elbow & hands often drawn toward mouth
•    Pulling back/retraction of the head, neck, torso
•    Stepping backwards or leaning to opposite side - away from object of disgust

Disgust can be directed at a thing, a person or a group of people.

The ability to spot often very brief and subtle thought-emotion displays are a skill that very few have but which every single person can profoundly benefit. Whenever there is a disparity between what is said verbally and displayed nonverbally - it is the nonverbal that always tells the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2598: Benjamin Netanyahu's Body Language regarding Iran Nuclear Proliferation and Negotiations (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Benjamin Netanyahu speaks in this interview about Iran's nuclear proliferation and near-nuclear weapon active status and some of the problems related to the most recent negotiations on this issue.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the video has since been deleted from its CBS internet source.

At several times during this video (e.g., 1:14 - 1:15 and 7:15 - 7:17), the Prime Minister of Israel displays a particular nonverbal known as the "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (SRHW). This body language is often exhibited by those who view themselves as high relative alphas. This alpha status is usually context-related (e.g. in other arenas they may indeed be predominantly betas). It consists of a relatively high frequency side-to-side head and neck movement. It is very commonly accompanied by a significant definitive verbal statement about which they are quite passionate and very confident. These verbal components often have an increased volume and sound frequency as well as well as an increased rate of speech.

Other features of this assertive (and sometimes hyper-assertive) body language include a superimposed backward vectoring of head movement (indicating added incredulity or sometimes disgust) or forward head movement (thus overlaying a scolding/reprimanding emotion). It is not unusual to see similar analog moments of the jaw and/or torso - either in isolation or as an adjunct to the SRHW.

Self-righteousness is an emotion which we all feel more often than we believe. It is not used here as example to say that Mr. Netanyahu (or anyone else) should or shouldn't feel in such a way - nor to pass judgment on Iran's desire or designs for nuclear weapons. Rather this example is an effort to teach nonverbal communication.

There were several other highly significant nonverbal tells throughout this video; which ones did you see? Which ones did you miss?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2116:
Michele Bachman's Hands and
Seeing between the lines

During the 0:14 - 0:18 segment and again at 0:19 of this video, Michele Bachmann (R-MN) points with both hands/index fingers at her audience. The two-handed index finger (aka forefinger) point is almost exclusively used in political settings - specifically where the speaker is in front of a crowd with similar ideologies. It is rare (and extremely unwise) to see it displayed when a candidate is trying to garner votes from the independently-minded. Forefinger pointing with even one hand (seen at 0:26) should never be used outside a highly partisan political audience scenario - as it is a cross-culturally and universally offensive gesture.

The two-handed point is used to try and demonstrate a super-alpha, highly assertive/aggressive stance - and here Ms. Bachmann is displaying it deliberately and consciously. To the casual observer it may appear that the congresswoman is highly confident here - but the truth lies in "reading" (seeing) between the nonverbal lines. Note that during 0:00 - 0:09, 0:18 - 0:19, 0:20 - 0:26 and 0:28 the Minnesota politician displays hand-to-hand touching. In body language nomenclature this is a form of a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier) and it is a strong indicator of beta behavior and low confidence. Indeed at the 0:20 - 0:26 and again at 0:28, Bachmann is actively massaging/rubbing/picking at the fingers on her right hand - a signal of considerable anxiety. Thus the conscious display (the double point) - indicates FALSE/FEIGNED confidence, while the UNconscious behavior body language (MAP, self-touching) indicates the TRUE emotional tone

Nonverbal Communication Intelligence # 2113:
Benjamin Netanyahu, Iran, the U.S. and the
Self-Righteous Head Wiggle

Compared to most politicians, Benjamin Netanyahu has very good nonverbal displays. His nonverbals are also easy to read - if you're observant, nonpartisan & objective. In the video above (at 0:32, 0:42 - 0:43, 0:46 and 0:48 - 0:49), while he is discussing the need for a tight reign on Iran's ambitions for nuclear weapons, the Israeli Prime Minister displays a classic example of the Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (SRHW). It has been alleged that President Obama declined to meet with Netanyahu during his upcoming trip to a United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York later in September.

In this nonpartisan analysis, the SRHW is characterized by a high frequency and short lived back-and-forth motion of the head - very typically in conjunction with a definitive verbal statement. Often the SRHW is accompanied by a similar side-to-side motion of the torso (0:41) and/or the mandible (jaw). Sometimes there is a forward vector to the head motion, which is seen more often in one-on-one scenarios (although Netanyahu exemplifies this above in the context of a press conference at 0:48 - 0:49) and when there is a clear superior-subordinate relationship present. A backward vectoring of the head-neck is also common as well (which implies an incredulity emotional component). In addition, the Prime Minister closes his eyelids for a longer duration at the 0:48 - 0:49. This is known as an extended blink and in this cluster-context, acts as an amplifier to his emotional beliefs.

Like all body language, well over 99.9% of the time, the SRHW is initiated and displayed subconsciously.

The SRHW tends to be used by relative alpha personalities in hierarchical settings when they are in a position to be assertive and have a high degree of confidence that their position or actions are correct. This common and under-appreciated nonverbal is often coexistent with anger, contempt, disgust and incredulity - although these feelings often are not expressed verbally.

During situations such as negotiations, sales and other rapport building scenarios, if the SRHW is displayed - it will sabotage any agreement. If you see it - you clearly have work to do in order to achieve a meeting of the minds. It is also a very useful body language tell to be aware of during voir dire (jury selection).

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1289:
Ownership, Territory & Dominance -
Fire Hydrants and Fences

While the doors in the Oval Office are wider than normal, I'm not sure they are necessarily designed for two heads-of-state to walk through simultaneously. President Obama is nonverbally demonstrating dominance by awkwardly trying to lean and shuffle into HIS OFFICE, before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli leader is striding in much more casually. He's been there many times before and the Oval Office doesn't intimidate him. Territorial and ownership body language displays are not always fire hydrants and fences.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Tip # 1239:
Benjamin Netanyahu, Barack Obama and Iran

This is an interesting video which includes Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, United States President Barack Obama and some of their remarks regarding Iran and nuclear weapons. From a body language analysis point of view - both leaders display nonverbal signals which are completely congruent with their verbal statements.

The President has several times quoted Teddy Roosevelt's "Speak softly and carry a big stick" - and this video clearly demonstrates several similar nonverbal signals. Both men are very accomplished speakers and very accustomed to being in the spot light - yet notice how President Obama is sitting in his chair - leaning back and less engaged than Mr. Netanyahu. The Prime Minister is seated forward, only his lower back touches the chair during this video - indicating a much higher "decision ready" emotional tone.

Mr. Netanyahu's feet are planted flat on the floor as well - further demonstrating that he's either very close to making a decision or is making it now. Barack Obama's legs are crossed however - consistent with the President's verbal remarks that although, "... The United States will always have Israel's back when it comes to Israel's security...", and that "... I do not have a policy of containment. I have a policy of preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."-  Obama believes there is still time for negotiation and a diplomatic solution with Iran. Notice that his left leg is crossed towards Netanyahu. In addition, Obama leans toward Netanyahu - mirroring his posture change of a few seconds earlier (at about the 6:25 mark) further demonstrating favor and respect for the Israeli leader and his views. We point our feet towards, lean towards and mirror those whom we like and respect. Yet the President has not yet reached the dichotomy mindset of "to attack or not attack". The President believes and sees - both intellectually and emotionally - a Grey Zone; whereas Netanyahu's brain has crossed into the land of the Black and White decision.

Nonverbal Negotiation Secret # 121:
Mubarak, King Abdullah and Netanyahu

Hosni Mubarak is seen in here adjusting his cuff.  This image was taken at the White House during a Conference on Middle East peace on Sept. 1, 2010.  Needless to say this was before Egypt's recent revolution. His cuff-adjust is an example of a Manipulator/Adaptor/Pacifier (MAP). MAPs are signs of increased anxiety.  While we don't know exactly what President Obama was saying, we can be sure it caused Mubarak anxiety. More specifically, it's a signal to us that Mubarak's psyche was attempting to "amp-up" alpha behavior and be more assertive.

Interestingly, King Abdullah II of Jordan, seated next to Mubarak has a classic expression of disgust.  It would be very valuable if President Obama and his staff have photos and similar videos analyzed for non-verbal cues which may give them a distinct advantage. If not, they should. I wonder if King Abdullah is coached?  I doubt it - but he should. All political leaders should. Without it they will give away (and overlook) a gold-mine's worth of information. Body language can certainly be used to a similar dominance in the court room.

Test your skills:  What tell is Benjamin Netanyahu showing us?

Five Leaders Walking Together but Four Showing Deference

During recent Middle East Peace Talks in Washington D.C., this photograph was taken as the leaders of five countries walk toward the East Room.  Left to right they are Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, U.S. President Barack Obama, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and King Abdullah II of Jordan. President Obama is walking at the front of this group.

While they are all leaders, the United States is the organizing and host country. The other leaders are not subordinates in in the classic sense, but on the World Stage they are viewed as such in this context. Subordinates walk in front of their leaders at their own risk. If a group of employees is walking with their boss down the hall way, they walk in front of him at their own risk. It will be considered an affront and doing so puts their job at risk.

Sincerity Secret # 55: Sincere Smile or is it Insincere?

Here is a great example of a sincere smile. Notice how Isabelle Giordano's upper and lower eye lids are partially closed. This is the most essential component of true, felt happiness/joy. So often we concentrate on just the mouth, both when we make a smile and when we measure the sincerity of others. Crow's feet may appear or be accentuated (if pre-existing / age-related) as well, but the partial eye closure is the key to a true smile.

Notice also how Isabelle's mouth only shows her upper teeth. The "squared-off" false smile which people will make, pulls their mouths more outward as well as pulling the lower lip down. You should see no more than a fraction of the lower teeth - any more and it's not a true, felt smile.

Also very important is the relaxed appearance of Ms. Giordano's forehead. Smiles where you see wrinkling of the forehead muscles are examples of another very common sign of a false smile. Interestingly, this also tends to be used more in insincere personality types. Negotiators beware!
