Body Language Analysis No. 3971: Elon Musk, Amber Heard, Affection, and Ownership - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Amber Heard is an accomplished actor. Elon Musk is one of the most influential people on the planet. Mera and the man who wants to colonize Mars have been romantically linked for months. Musk first became infatuated with Heard in 2013 during the filming of "Machete Kills", in which they both appeared. The image above is from Heard's Instagram taken during their recent trip to Australia.

From a body language perspective, when we lean on another person in public - it's an open declaration of "ownership". We want others to see we belong to each other. While hand and waist holding are certainly also are affectionate in nature, they too partially serve to send the same territorial signals - "We are a couple now". And although we didn't see Amber kiss Elon, her deliberate remnant of lipstick similarly marks her man.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3153: Jodi Arias gets a Life Sentence Without Parole for Killing Travis Alexander - a Body Language Warning Signal (PHOTOS)

Today Jodi Arias was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of Travis Alexander.

Chin-holding of another person is rarely associated with healthy love. Even in the context of an established relationship, it very often signals false-affection and false-intimacy. Thus chin holding frequently (but not always) is a warning sign. And although nonverbal signals should never be interpreted in isolation, when it's seen - the vast majority of the time chin-holding indicates a degree of objectification and a mindset of ownership. It can also signal hyper-alpha and narcissistic qualities.

Survivors of kidnappings and hostage scenarios will often recount this and similar body language signs - however with these individuals and situations, their sinister motives' are obvious much too late. Of course most acts of objectification don't have violent endings, but the trick is - to see this and other red flags ahead of time.

What specific emotions are Travis Alexander's facial expression projecting?

Given the placement of Arias' left hand, what is the significance of the position of her right hand on the back of Travis' neck?

My condolences to the family of Mr. Alexander.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2806: Russian "Separatists" in Ukraine - Body Language of ..... (PHOTO)

What does this man know that the Ukrainian Military has yet to realize?

Some may say this is body language of laziness - they would be wrong. In this context in particular it is a significant alpha display. This Russian "separatist" is inside a regional government building in the City of Donetsk, Ukraine. This nonverbal configuration is indicative of "ownership". It speaks to his confidence and emotional comfort and his anticipated success of Russia annexing eastern portions of Ukraine. It also tells us that there is no one who out-ranks him in the room.

What other key thought-feeling does his body language indicate?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2520:
Cristiano Ronaldo greets Gareth Bale at
First Training Day at Real Madrid,
Dominance, Team Captain and Body Language
(VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Cristiano Ronaldo, the recognized team captain of Real Madrid (paid €12 Million/year) welcomes the upstart and new teammate Gareth Bale (paid €18.6 Million/year). Note that the nuanced movements and configuration of the two men's right arms and hands. Ronaldo's arm approaches from a more alpha and elevated position (more dominant) while Bale's comes in from a lower angle (more beta and submissive).

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Moreover Cristiano's fingers are open - also projecting confidence and Gareth's are closed - displaying his caution and guarded emotional tone.

Here we see Ronaldo pats Bale on his side (total of three pats). This is not affectionate - it is a dominance display. Victors display this "ownership" body language to those they defeat, Presidents use this same nonverbal behavior to members of their cabinets and captains also project their alpha behavior to the others (betas) on their team.

This is a false-affection nonverbal signal and more specifically it conveys ownership and dominance. This and other similar nonverbals will project patronizing and condescending attitudes - although recipient of such nonverbals of dominance/false affection rarely voice their dislike for this behavior. Ronaldo's body language is very much saying, "You may be good - but you're not as good as me - and don't you ever forget that I'm the captain of Real Madrid."

Here, one of Real Madrid's assistant managers, Paul Clement, exhibits a mirror imaged identical maneuver to Ronaldo's a few seconds earlier.

Clement does not need to remind Bale that he is an assistant manager. Bale of course already knows.

In this moment Luka Modrić displays three consecutive "Hair Adjusts Behind Ears" (aka HABE). This is seen primarily in women and men with longer hair (as has Modrić). It signals a "dialing up of alpha qualities". This lets us know that although a person may very well be primarily an alpha (yet it certainly holds for all varieties of dominance or submissiveness), these are times when the psyche feels the need to up-regulate dominant characteristics and become more assertive and aggressive. Luka's subconscious/edge-of-consciousness is saying to himself, "time to get down to business".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2330:
Body Language of Foot Placement on another Person's Chair

The above image displays a very common body language behavior - the act of putting one's foot on another person's chair. Words that are written and spoken in any language can have completely different meanings depending on the other words which accompany them - even if they're spelled the same and pronounced the same (e.g. hot, dressing, fly, love, kill, etc.). Body language is no different. These "nonverbal homonyms" have to be interpreted in the context of the other "nonverbal words" present in the "body language sentence".

In the context of romance and dating this "foot on another person's chair" sends a strong signal of affection and/or sexual interest. It is a "touching surrogate" which can pre-date hand holding, affectionate touching and holding hands. Of course it may also be displayed once these relationship milestones have already been reached.

It is also commonly observed as among family members as a symbol of affection. Once again it's a touching surrogate commonly seen in public rather than more overt public displays of affection. Thus also signals an ownership-stewardship characteristic between parents as well as between siblings.

If this is observed in a business setting, it could of course signal potential romantic attraction. However much more often in a work-place context this foot-on-another's chair is an alpha personality display. If the foot encroaching into your personal space belongs to your boss an occasional dominance display is within normal behavior. Too much though can signal a problem.

This foot nonverbal can also be an indicator of an autistic spectrum disorder - which of course are accompanied by other signs. Intriguingly, those with ASD may invade others' space and not be aware of it - and yet they may become very upset when their own space is violated. But lookout - for when this foot-to-chair body language is seen often & in the absence of autistic spectrum disorder - it is a strong indicator of narcissistic personality disorder. Multiple personal space violations always have meanings - some benign, some romantic and still others should send up red flags.

Notice in the image above, the man is turned toward his partner/date with a more-than-moderate seated crotch display (which in the context of dating/flirting/relationships - also has strong sexual signals). She is not reciprocating. With this lack of positive feedback in a dating scenario, the gentleman should remove his foot and while still turned towards the lady - perhaps sit with a less overt crotch display. Unfortunately, many men are oblivious to this and similar behaviors.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2242:
Rihanna & Chris Brown at Lakers Game
Body Language of Dominance, "Ownership",
Narcissism and Submission

On Christmas Day for the first time Rihanna and Chris Brown displayed the fact openly that they are back together as they watched the Lakers defeated the Knicks, 100 to 94. This after Chris Brown plead guilty to acts of domestic violence (felony assault) against Rihanna for which he is still on probation. While every man, when walking hand-in-hand with his significant other occasionally walks ahead or faster - and the fact Rihanna is wearing 5 inch stilettos perhaps slows down her walking speed, this body language is very troubling.

Albert Camus once said, "Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow. Don't walk behind me, I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend". This quote springs to mind when seeing Brown's body language. One who, when holding hands, consistently walks in front (which thus takes into account the exceptions, e.g. in a hurry, etc.) signals a strong nonverbal signal of alpha personality and dominance. More troubling still it is a body language tell of narcissistic personality disorder.

Understandably, whoever allows her/himself to consistently/often to be led in tow, as Rihanna exemplifies here, signals a very beta, submissive, overly-demure personality. More to the point (and here through very obvious retrospective insight), displays a body language signal of she-who-will-be-"owned". This, and other similar post-abuse "return-to-the-one-who-beat-you" behavior, follows an unfortunate but well-established statistical pattern.

Among other things, this body language is a warning signal that violence will again rear its ugly head. The recidivism of domestic violence is very high. So to any girls or women who may read this - beware of this nonverbal, lest you too become a victim.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2142:
Mitt Romney's face wipe by stranger -
Preening as a signal of Affection

This video highlights Joseph Melluso, the owner of "The Tin Fish" restaurant in Port St. Lucie, Florida, wiping republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's face multiple times. No doubt because he was the owner of the building, he felt a "temporary supervisorial" or "shepherding-like role" for this man who may be the U.S. President in less than a month - and this contributed to this nonverbal behavior. However, when one preens another - particularly in such a public scenario - this is also a body language signal consistent with feelings of affection. This is not to suggest that the two have any relationship or aspire to - but wiping, cleaning, picking at the remnants of a napkin/lint (seen during 1:01 - 1:03, 1:10 - 1:12, 1:15), straightening a tie, or smoothing out wrinkles in clothing, etc. - all examples of preening behavior - are signals of affection. It is common to have affection/false affection and similar feelings for those who we see images in the media. Note how Mitt pulls away and reflexively pats Melluso's arm during 0:21 - 0:22. This same patting action, performed at the end (and sometimes at the beginning or throughout) of a hug, lets the other person know that it's time for the hug to end. Joe Melluso obviously likes the candidate and will, of course, be voting for him.

Jeanne Moos mentions that the secret service officer didn't raise an eyebrow - however his right eyebrow is certainly raised in a nonverbal signal of incredulity/disbelief at 1:48.

Should you witness versions of such body language preening behavior at the office (or anywhere else) - even with significantly subtler examples, it's a strong signal that the emotion of affection is being felt.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1289:
Ownership, Territory & Dominance -
Fire Hydrants and Fences

While the doors in the Oval Office are wider than normal, I'm not sure they are necessarily designed for two heads-of-state to walk through simultaneously. President Obama is nonverbally demonstrating dominance by awkwardly trying to lean and shuffle into HIS OFFICE, before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli leader is striding in much more casually. He's been there many times before and the Oval Office doesn't intimidate him. Territorial and ownership body language displays are not always fire hydrants and fences.
