Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1914:
Sincere Surprise - Often Faked & Difficult to Capture
Spain Beats Portugal in Euro 2012

There are many fantastic facial expressions in this crowd of fans who are watching Spain defeat Portugal in the Euro 2012. The woman front and center exemplifies the rarely captured emotion of sincere surprise. Because true surprise is so evanescent (lasting only a second or two) it is difficult to photograph. Her widely opened eyes ("white and wide") are highly consistent with the emotion of surprise - as is her vertically oval and wide opened mouth. If her hand were not covering most of it, we could see the entire width of her forehead is contracted - and with it her elevated eyebrows.

Spain will face Italy in the final on Sunday.
