Body Language Analysis No. 4081: Catalonia's Referendum vs. Spain's Control - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The government of Catalonia reports that 90% of the voters who took part in a referendum election on 1 October 2017 voted for independence. Spain has ruled the election illegal and ordered that it be shut down. Spanish national police were deployed. At many polling stations violence ensued - and at some locations, police confiscated the ballot boxes. Some reports claim as many as 888 people were injured.

The image above was taken in Barcelona. Note the position of the woman's head, neck, torso, and arms. Her torso and neck are both angled forward, while her head and upper arms are vectored backward.

From a body language perspective, the backward angle of her head is an extremely common component of contempt, disgust, and anger. This lateral, profile-view clearly demonstrates the colloquial of "Looking Down the Nose" at someone.

In any type of highly polarized conflict - more so than anger - disgust and contempt are the more extreme emotions - and intriguingly necessary for an "Us versus Them" mentality. Contempt and Disgust are psychologically necessary in order to look at another person or group as "beneath you" - and, in more extreme cases, "less than human". Viewing other people with contempt and disgust are central behaviors to all prejudice, mass killings, genocide, and war.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2849: Netherlands Victorious Over Spain, Vicente Del Bosque, Negative Self-Evaluation and Regret - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

If you're watching the World Cup, you know by now that the Netherlands beat Spain, 5-1 today. In this image of the Spanish National Team Manager - Vicente Del Bosque is seen with a particularly telling nonverbal cluster. Del Bosque is looking down with his forefinger and thumb of his left hand touching the corners of his mouth. This is virtually always followed by each of these digits moving toward the mid-line as they rub one or both lips. Although seen in all genders, this nonverbal is most prevalent in the male population. It is indicative of a negative self-evaluation with an additional component of regret.

In this setting, the body language exemplified above is not at all surprising (given his team's crushing loss) - however there will be many times such a nonverbal cluster display is seen along with positive and optimistic verbal statements. In such scenarios - do not believe what you hear! Believe only what you see. For when the verbal and the nonverbal are disparate - the nonverbal is ALWAYS correct.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2458:
The Pain in Spain Hurts Mainly in the Spleen
Running of the Bulls & Body Language in Pamplona
(Video, Photos)

Patrick Eccles, an architecture student from University of Utah, was gored today along with two Spaniards in the annual "Running of the Bulls" in Pamplona, Spain. The bravado tradition is part of the seven-day festival of Sanfermines. Traditional garb includes a white shirt and red scarf. It is considered extra brave to touch the bulls during the running (see video below).

In the above images of the brave Mr. Eccles we can see an excellent snapshot of the facial manifestations of significant pain. Note how his eyebrows are lowered and his eyelids are clenched tightly to the point of closure. Coincident with this is the raising of his cheeks [orbicularis oculi (pars orbitalis)]. Mid-face tightening is also very prominent here - most easily seen by the dramatic dilation of his nostrils. The upper "bridge" of the nose is also wrinkled. The upper lip is elevated significantly and the corners of the lips are pulled tight and stretched outward (laterally). Baring of the teeth as Patrick shows here is also highly typical.

One facial expression-body language signal that is very difficult for most to feign is the selective contraction of the central forehead muscles [abbreviated CFC for the frontalis (pars medialis) muscle]. Glance at the above image and you can see that Mr. Eccles central forehead is tightly contracted with the outer (lateral) portions not contracted and smooth. It is extremely rare for significant pain to be present in the absence of this classic display of contraction of the central forehead muscles.

Patrick reportedly had to have his spleen removed. Good luck and a speedy recovery Mr. Eccles.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1927:
Italy's Fans watching Euro 2012 Final - Expressions of Fear

Italy's football fans in this photo are watching their team playing Spain in the Euro 2012 finals ... with much trepidation. The man on the right has some subtle to moderate body language manifestations of fear. Notice how his neck is slightly taught. Higher levels of fear will result in more extreme contraction and an appearance of "tenting" of the superficial neck muscle known as the platysma (see also: Analysis # 329: The Neck of Fear). While self-touching in general indicates the more general emotion of anxiety - MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors or Pacifiers) of the face (e.g., woman on the left), neck, chin (man on the right), manumbrium (upper portion of sternum) or the upper torso are more consistent with fear. This man's mouth is also stretched down and backwards at the "corners". Note that we see his bottom teeth exposed - and although subtle, this also highly characteristic of the "mouth of fear" (see also: Analysis # 301: Angela Merkel's Mouth of Fear).

It is important to note the extreme variety of events which people may "fear", even though we often think of this emotion as one indicative of a physically threatening action or other relatively extreme catastrophe.  No so. Empathy and careful observation shows otherwise. Thus, it is very valuable to note these displays in negotiations, the sales processes, and other professional settings.

Spain triumphed in the largest margin of victory ever in a UEFA EURO final, 4-0.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1914:
Sincere Surprise - Often Faked & Difficult to Capture
Spain Beats Portugal in Euro 2012

There are many fantastic facial expressions in this crowd of fans who are watching Spain defeat Portugal in the Euro 2012. The woman front and center exemplifies the rarely captured emotion of sincere surprise. Because true surprise is so evanescent (lasting only a second or two) it is difficult to photograph. Her widely opened eyes ("white and wide") are highly consistent with the emotion of surprise - as is her vertically oval and wide opened mouth. If her hand were not covering most of it, we could see the entire width of her forehead is contracted - and with it her elevated eyebrows.

Spain will face Italy in the final on Sunday.
