Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2852: Cristiano Ronaldo, The 2014 World Cup and Body Language (PHOTO)

Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward for Real Madrid, also captains the Portugal National Team in this year's World Cup. Regarded by many to be the best footballer in the World, he is shown in the image above after Portugal's 4-0 loss to Germany earlier today.

From a nonverbal standpoint, Ronaldo's primary emotion in this moment is one of regret. In the real world, emotions often do not occur in isolation - there are frequently several simultaneous emotions. Cristiano's secondary emotion is one of contempt. Can you spot the specific facial components of both of these? What is his tertiary emotion?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2851: Jerad Miller Interview at Cliven Bundy Ranch Incident - Body Language Warning Signs (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Miller was interviewed by a television station several weeks ago during a standoff at the Cliven Bundy Ranch. During the interview, Miller displayed several disgust nonverbals.

Miller also displayed multiple disgust facial nonverbals.

The following cannot be stressed enough: Those who commit premeditated mass shootings and terrorist acts will chronically display nonverbal signals of contempt and disgust. This is of paramount importance during threat assessment and in similar efforts to prevent this and other violent acts.

This image (from 3:48) shows Miller in a partially suppressed smile (a variation of duping delight) as he slowly rubs his hands and speaks of "... a couple people ..." who would not come for fear they would "... get a little trigger happy ...". This was a lie, the other people were his and his wife's alter egos - which reared their ugly heads a few weeks later in the mass shooting event where he and his wife killed officers Igor Soldo and Alyn Beck as well as a civilian Joseph Wilcox.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2850: Hillary Clinton, Sonia Sotomayor and Costco - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Sonia Sotomayor (yes, the Supreme Court Justice) was shopping at Costco today and dropped by to say hello to Hillary Clinton who was there for a scheduled book signing. Mrs. Clinton is on a nation-wide tour promoting her new book, "Hard Choices" - which most speculate is itself a pre-campaign for the 2016 U.S. Presidency.

Mrs. Clinton has not formally announced her bid for the White House. However this brief interaction serves as good body language lesson addressing one of the weaknesses the former Secretary of State's has in building rapport with the electorate.

Note: Since the original writing of this post, the source video has since been deleted from YouTube.

While it Sonia Sotomayor's appearance certainly seems to surprise the former First Lady (Video of event above with photos below), the hug she gave was across a table approximately 30 inches (0.76 meters) wide. Mrs. Clinton was criticized in 2008 for being too business-like as well as for not being warm, approachable and a less-than-friendly version of the "every-woman". In fact, when she teared up at a campaign event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (7 January 2008 - Video Below) - it was a key moment in her campaign - as she enjoyed a significant boost in the polls. People felt much more connected with her during such a sincere moment of emotion. Here, Mrs. Clinton should have stepped out and around front of the table - walking to Sotomayor and gave her a sincere hug. This would have built significant rapport with Sotomayor - and (more importantly) vicariously with every single person who watched it - now and in the future. Hugs and handshakes should never be given over a table - unless of course you want to destroy rapport.

A few seconds later (after the hug) Clinton and Sotomayor display a forward leaning, hands wide, on-the-table nonverbal. While some of this is residual from the low quality hug, this body language is more significantly a dominant and alpha configuration by two of the most powerful women in the country.

While it is common knowledge that a candidate's "likability" is the primary component to winning over the middle third of the electorate - most politicians don't realize (nor do their campaign managers) that the largest component of a candidate's "likability" is their body language. Elections are won and lost based on nonverbals. Ignore them and lose.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2849: Netherlands Victorious Over Spain, Vicente Del Bosque, Negative Self-Evaluation and Regret - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

If you're watching the World Cup, you know by now that the Netherlands beat Spain, 5-1 today. In this image of the Spanish National Team Manager - Vicente Del Bosque is seen with a particularly telling nonverbal cluster. Del Bosque is looking down with his forefinger and thumb of his left hand touching the corners of his mouth. This is virtually always followed by each of these digits moving toward the mid-line as they rub one or both lips. Although seen in all genders, this nonverbal is most prevalent in the male population. It is indicative of a negative self-evaluation with an additional component of regret.

In this setting, the body language exemplified above is not at all surprising (given his team's crushing loss) - however there will be many times such a nonverbal cluster display is seen along with positive and optimistic verbal statements. In such scenarios - do not believe what you hear! Believe only what you see. For when the verbal and the nonverbal are disparate - the nonverbal is ALWAYS correct.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2848: Iliza Shlesinger, Hair Adjust Behind Ear, Dialing Up Your Alpha & Comedy - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Iliza Shlesinger recently appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon". The video above is hilarious - yet she also gives us an example of body language used in context. Like all comedians, Shlesinger goes "into character" here and there throughout her shtick - and she uses body language in multiple ways to suspend our disbelief and thus laugh deeper. Below is just one of these nonverbals.

At multiple times throughout her routine, Iliza displays the "Hair Adjust Behind the Ear" (aka HABE). This is one of many examples of what in body language parlance is known as a MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier). This particular MAP has a very specific meaning. It indicates that the person is seeking to "dial up their alpha". They may indeed be very alpha to begin with - yet in the moment - they need more assertiveness. The HABE is a clear (and subconsciously driven) nonverbal signal indicating they feel they need more alpha. It is a very valuable signal in the setting of a negotiation, the courtroom, etc.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2847: Eric Cantor, Concession Speeches and Low Affection - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In a major upset, Eric Cantor (R - VA) lost in his primary race to Dave Brat last night. The above video is a portion of the House Majority Leader's concession speech. At the very beginning he kisses his wife, Diana.

Note that Diana does NOT close her eyes. Her head and neck are neither tilted nor rotated until the last fraction of a second.

The Congressman is aiming for his wife's lips. This however is not her (subconscious) intention.

At the very last instant she tilts and rotates her head/neck to her left and avoids a lip kiss from her husband.

In addition she is the first to pull away - deliberately and actively disengaging from the kiss. A careful observation of the video also shows she pulls away very slightly before the kiss very - belying her dislike for his affection.

Mrs. Cantor is not just a "bad kisser". This kiss is strongly indicative of a low affection quotient of Diana Cantor towards her husband. Such behavior is not what most would expect following a loss of this magnitude or context.

With regards to Representative Cantor, what nonverbals are very incongruent with a person who has just suffered such a major loss?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2846: Shailene Woodley Set Interview - The Fault in Our Stars - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The above video contains excerpts from set interviews of Shailene Woodley in her roll for the film, "The Fault in Our Stars". In the John Green Novel, Woodley plays 17 year-old, Hazel Grace Lancaster who has thyroid cancer (with metastasis to the lungs, etc.).

At the 2:13 mark in the video (captured below in a still image), Ms. Woodley displays a combination of two emotions which unusually don't co-exist: Fear and Anger. There also is a hint of possible sadness in this same instant.

Note Shaliene's Jaw Jut - this is a reliable indicator of anger. And while her mouth has a more subtle component of fear (aka fear mouth) - her neck shows more prominent contraction consistent with fear. She also is looking down to her right - which ~95% of right-hand dominant people do when they are emotional (particularly in the context of sadness).

The simultaneous combination of fear, anger and sadness - while not so frequent in the every-day experience, is common in people going through major life events. Thus if a person had a diagnosis of stage 4 cancer, the coexistence of these would be common (e.g. Kübler-Ross model aka The Five Stages of Grief). Shailene Woodley - who was on set for these interviews, was still "in character". She still had her Stanislavski on (Method Acting). Thus Shailene was really more Hazel Grace Lancaster vs. herself in this interview.

Ms. Woodley also repeated gave signals of high empathy during this interview - did you catch this extremely valuable body language tell?

Nonverbal Communication Quiz-Analysis No. 2845: Jerad Miller & Amanda Miller - Las Vegas Cop Killers/Mass Shooting - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Jerad and Amanda Miller killed two police officers - Alyn Beck and Igor Soldo - and a third person in a shooting rampage in Las Vegas yesterday - before Mrs. Miller turned the gun on her husband and then herself. The two have alleged associations with neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups/mindsets.

In the image of Mr. Miller above - what characteristic emotion is he displaying that - when it is seen chronically - is very common among mass shooters and terrorists? What other body language is helpful when making threat assessments?

What nonverbal is Mrs. Miller displaying? Does it share any similarities with her diseased husband?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2844: Vladimir Tells a Lie To Obama at Normandy - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Vladimir Putin has infamously alienated himself from most all European leaders with his perceived support of separatists in their bid for a portion for Ukraine to join Russia

In this brief (~6.4 seconds) but very telling video, Obama and Putin are shown speaking at the recent gathering of leaders at the 70th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy. And while without hearing their words none of the following nonverbals taken in isolation indicate deception (although one is strongly suggestive) - when interpreted in this cluster-context, they are extremely consistent with Vladimir Putin telling a lie to Barack Obama.

Of all the body language tells, this nose rub taken in isolation is highly consistent with deception when the person displaying it is talking - particularly with making a declarative statement.

This evanescent suppressed smile of Vladimir's is either a mirroring of President Obama's smile - or an example of "Duping Delight" (Ekman).

Putin's eye contact is considerably below what is should be for a man of his station who is confident.

An "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) indicating President Putin's psyche attempting to prevent a crescendo of internal emotion as well as an outward nonverbal display.

A fraction of a second after the ILR, we see Putin display an inward lip roll, President Putin displays a "Tongue Jut". In this context it indicates he has a strong distaste to what he is saying/doing/or to whom he is speaking.

Three episodes of extended blinks

Note also Putin's jugular veins (in neck, only left is visible here) - it is distended throughout much of this video. This is significant for increased intrathoracic pressure - which is also consistent with significant anxiety.

Moreover throughout this exchange President Putin rocks back and forth - shifting his weight from one leg to the other and back again. High anxiety.

Taken in total - this nonverbal cluster indicates Vladimir Putin was telling a lie to Barack Obama.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2843: Barack Obama & Vladimir Putin in Normandy - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

During their recent visit to Normandy to honor the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion, much was made about the tension between Vladimir Putin and other heads of State - particularly Barack Obama.

Note in this first image, Mr. Putin displays a "Central Forehead Contraction" (CFC) with what appears to be (low resolution and indirect angle) a very slight right sided, insincere mouth smile - with a degree of contempt.

In this image Vladimir Putin displays a CFC with a slight degree of regret.

In this photo, although the angle is not optimal, the Russian President's mouth appears to be relatively neutral - yet his central forehead contraction is again seen.

When a person feels emotionally uncomfortable but desires to not let it show (e.g. feeling beta but wants to appear alpha) - he or she will very often over-use their central forehead muscles. Putin is doing so in these examples. He very much fees the odd man out.

Although the use of the CFC can indicate a number of completely different emotions depending on the other body language signal which accompanies it (a nonverbal cluster-context) - the over-use of the central forehead contraction can be a reliable indicator for feelings of insincerity, inferiority and seeking validation.
