Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3654: Hope Solo Calls Swedish Team "Cowards" after US Loss in Rio - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

Hope Solo called the Swedish football (soccer) team "cowards" and "cowardly" after the US lost to Sweden 4-3 in penalty kicks after 1-1 in regulation. The US lost was the Americans' earliest exit ever from the Olympics.

After the match Solo said,

"Sweden dropped back. They didn't want to open play. They didn’t want to pass the ball around. They didn’t want to play great soccer, entertaining soccer. It was a combative game. A physical game. Exactly what they wanted. Exactly what their game plan was. We had that style of play when Pia was our coach. I think it was very cowardly. But they won, they’re moving on. And we’re going home."

as well as

We played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly, firmly believe that.

In the image above we can clearly see a classic nonverbal cluster: Hope Solo's thinned and horizontally-oriented lips, her jaw jutting forward and clenched, her mid-facial tension, her nostrils flaring, her eyelids opened significantly wider than baseline, with tightened lower eyelids and her central (inner aka medial) eyebrows lowered. This facial expression is very characteristic of mid-to-high levels of anger.

Those individuals who cannot channel their anger and in particular who cannot let go of their anger - have a much higher likelihood of heart disease as well as impulse control disorder. Solo's use of the words "coward" and "cowardly" in this context are indicative of this disability.

The goalkeeper needs to take up yoga.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2900: Lionel Messi and the Lateral Lip Purse - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Captain of the 2014 Argentine Football Team as well as a forward for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi is shown here in an often misunderstood nonverbal display - that of the "Lateral Lip Purse".

A lateral lip purse is a sign of an open decision making process. In distinction to the forward lip purse - (which has a clandestine nature to it) - when the lips are pursed to one side, it conveys an honest, open and non-secretive emotional tone. A lateral lip purse is very commonly seen in a grocery store when a person is deciding between two brands or flavors.

An additional component to Messi's expression here is seen in the configuration of his eyebrows - as they are drawn together and lowered. Lionel is a few seconds (or less) into his negative judgment of what he sees is transpiring - and what he BELIEVES should have occurred. He is still open about this judgement however - which is a very significant distinction.

If someone disagrees with you, very often their words will be in agreement. Can you tell the difference? What other signs of open vs. clandestine disagreement can you name?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2884: Mario Götze, Germany, the 2014 World Cup final, and the Body Language of Fiero (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The term "Fiero" is a word which describes the unique emotion which is felt after a significant problem is solved or a great accomplishment is achieved. And while it can occur in any field of human endeavor and is certainly not limited to sporting events - it's on the field of athletic competition that its body language is most commonly captured on camera.

The termed fiero was coined by Italian Psychologist Isabella Poggi, and does not have an English equivalent. Interestingly and unfortunately, although English does have more words than any other language - it suffers from a significant relative deficit of words which describe the many nuances of emotion, particularly positive emotional experiences when compared with many other languages.

In the image above, one of Germany's midfielders Mario Götze (No. 19) has just scored what turned out to be the winning and only goal in the 113th minute of the 2014 World Cup Championship final vs. Argentina. Götze is in the midst of emotionally processing the event along with his teammates Thomas Müller (No. 13), André Schürrle (back, left), and Benedikt Höwedes (No. 4).

Note the prevalence of their wide open mouths and Schürrle's baring of his bottom teeth. Additionally, flared nostrils with extreme mid-face tension as well as eyebrows contracted together and centrally drawn downwards would, in other contexts, cause many to find these facial expressions as those of extreme pain, fear, and/or anger. And although in the first few moments there can be some fluctuation in what is displayed - very shortly these nonverbals will be replaced by expressions much more recognizable of extreme and pure joy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2852: Cristiano Ronaldo, The 2014 World Cup and Body Language (PHOTO)

Cristiano Ronaldo, a forward for Real Madrid, also captains the Portugal National Team in this year's World Cup. Regarded by many to be the best footballer in the World, he is shown in the image above after Portugal's 4-0 loss to Germany earlier today.

From a nonverbal standpoint, Ronaldo's primary emotion in this moment is one of regret. In the real world, emotions often do not occur in isolation - there are frequently several simultaneous emotions. Cristiano's secondary emotion is one of contempt. Can you spot the specific facial components of both of these? What is his tertiary emotion?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2090:
Hope Solo on Piers Morgan
Flirting 101

In this Piers Morgan interview, U.S. Goal Keeper, Hope Solo displays classic flirtatious body language signals of hair preening, facial blushing, pointing the elbow laterally (upper arm pointed out to side) with armpit exposure and a sincere smile during the 0:19 - 0:22 segment. When multiple congruent nonverbal signals are seen simultaneously or nearly so - this is referred to as a body language "cluster" and thus its message should be interpreted with a very high degree of confidence.
