Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2819: Erik Spoelstra, Loose Forward Lip Purse and Clandestine Disagreement (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the pregame Q & A session before game 5 between the Miami Heat and the Brooklyn Nets, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra didn't answer any questions - because none were asked.

The above short video is packed with many Nonverbal Signals. How many do you see?

During the 0:10 - 0:15.5 segment (isolated in the image below), Coach Spoelstra displays a "Loose Forward Lip Purse". This is a very reliable body language signal indicating a person perceives him or herself as a relative alpha in the company of relative beta personalities - and in the midst of clandestine disagreement. Often there is a great disparity between what is said and what is being thought and/or felt in that moment. It also indicates a belief that there is a reasonable chance of success of a plan of action/idea, etc.

Most of the time when a loose forward lip purse is displayed - one will rarely have the opportunity to see the person's plan of action played out so rapidly. In the above video however, we see Spoelstra immediately act out his idea. He gets up and walks out without any questioned asked - and thus no need for answering.

Thus in the business, legal, political or sales world - when the loose forward lip purse is seen - know that there is a great disparity between what is said and what is being felt. Take heed.

How many "Loose Forward Lip Purses" did you miss today?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2818: The Caring Hand, Palms Up and Building Rapport (PHOTO)

Besides being beautiful and very creative, this sculpture in Glarus, Switzerland is configured in a very giving and rapport building way. Known as "The Caring Hand" with only the thumb and fingers visible in a loose, palm-up orientation with the implied palm below the ground and not visible - the hand appears to be holding the roots of the tree - and brilliantly the body language of this art projects an open, caring and giving - yet still authoritative emotional-tone.

In the world of flesh and blood, people who use this loose, palms-up body language when gesturing (known as "illustrators" as when used properly, they serve to emphasize, underline and animate verbal language as well as paralanguage) will build much more rapport, make more sales, win more negations & elections, de-escalate many confrontations and convince multitudes of juries  - vs. the use of palms-down gestures. The palm-up illustrator with a loose hand, elbow and shoulder is thus very effective alpha-beta hybrid.

Palm-down hand movements are examples of alpha and hyper-alpha illustrators. Particularly rapport destroying and audience alienating (and amplified when the palm-down fingers are closed together, and when the wrist, elbow or shoulders are extended and stiff) - this will body language will destroy rapport and alienate audiences (even an audience of one).

Incredibly, the students or audience of teachers, professors, attorneys, speakers, etc. who use palms-up illustrators will have significantly higher retention-rates of the materials presented.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2817: Rep. Joe Garcia Picks His Ear & Eats it - What his Body Language Really is Saying (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During a house judiciary meeting last Wednesday, Joe Garcia (D - FL) stuck a finger in his ear and then proceeded to eat the pickings. While this act is certainly repulsive to most, there is more going on here than just a lesson in hygiene gone wrong.

The body language Representative Garcia displays in this moment is an ear screw. He either does not believe the Rep. Suzan DelBene (D - WA) - (who is talking when he commits this nonverbal) - or the person(s) to whom she is addressing (primarily the chairman - Bob Goodlatte, R - VA).

Intriguingly Mr. Garcia is using his middle finger to commit the ear screw. This is one example of a class of nonverbals known as "Partial Emblematic Slips" (Ekman). These are defined as emblems (a local, regional or universal body language symbol) which is less-than-fully-displayed - and more typically but not always involves the hands - and is displayed in a non-standard position (here in ear and not fully isolated from the other digits rather than on direct display in front of one's body). Greater than ninety-nine percent of the time this nonverbal is initiated and carried out subconsciously.

This body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates that Representative Garcia not only does NOT believe what is being said or the person to whom it's being said - but he is also flipping them the bird as well.

It is not a coincidence that Garcia simultaneously is displaying contempt with the right side of his mid-face (do you see all of these contempt components?).

Here Rep. Garcia's contempt clearly continues.

The partial emblematic slip is again displayed a few seconds later.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2816: Donald Sterling Interview - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling gave an interview today with CNN's Anderson Cooper. A portion of this interview is included in the above video.

At 2:16 Cooper begins, "Did you apologize to him, er ...?"

Sterling then responds, "Well .... Aaaah ... if I said anything wrong, I'm sorry. He's [Magic Johnson] a good person and he [pause with expression of disgust during 2:27.8 - 2:29.8] and what am I gonna say ..."

Donald Sterling then went on to describe how although is great, he feels that Magic Johnson is not a good role model for the children of Los Angeles.

In this close up view of Donald Sterling's face, we see a classic expression of disgust. Note the tightening of his "mustache area" and a flaring of both nostrils. A disgust amplifier is also present in the partial closing of his eyelids.

What other nonverbal signal here demonstrates the presence of a second emotion?

Nonverbal Communication Quiz No. 2815: A.J. McCarron, Asymmetrical Smiles and the 5th Round? - Body Language (PHOTO)

A. J. McCarron was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 5th round of the 2014 NFL Draft - 164th overall. Many thought the Alabama quarterback would have been picked in the first round.

Adam Schefter of ESPN has recently reported that McCarron has rubbed teams "the wrong way" and suggested that this is a primary reason for his considerably lower that expected draft results.

The above image of the back-to-back BSC National Championship QB shows him with an asymmetrical smile. This particular image of McCarron's one-sided smile is indicative of which of the following emotions:

A. A Sincere Smile
B. An Insincere Smile
C. Contempt
D. Mouth Swagger
E. The Beginnings of a Sincere Smile
F. The End of a Sincere Smile
G. McCarron's Norm
H. Regret
I. Fear
J. A Jaw Confessional
K. Incredulity

Can you accurately differentiate these facial expressions?

What are the other emotions also consistent with asymmetrical mouth configurations?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2814: Ukraine, Pro-Russian Separatists, Bilateral Eyelid Closure and Emotional Processing - Body Language Tells

This Russian separatist in Odessa (in Western Ukraine) is shown here with his finger on the trigger of a gun. His arm is extended with elbow locked and he is barking orders. Note that both of his eyelids are closed. This valuable nonverbal signal of an "extended blink" in this context signifies that the emotional brain is attempting to block his emotional crescendo. The compassionate and empathy driven side of this man's psyche does not want to be pointing a gun at anyone - and yet he is. He is trying to momentarily not-be-quite-so-human and shut off his emotions. The degree to which he does - or doesn't do so controls whether or not he pulls the trigger.

Barack Obama gave a speech in San Jose on Thursday and was interrupted by a heckler trying to get support from the President for the "oppressed people of Ethiopia".

Although President Obama did display very brief moments of anger after the interruption, he did a very good job at recovering - and in fact for most of the remainder of the speech displayed a nearly continuous display of suppressed joy-happiness.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2811: Jason and David Benham are Dropped from HGTV - Body Language of Subtle Contempt, Anger & Disgust (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

David and Jason Benham were dropped by HGTV for an upcoming show ("Flip it Forward") in which there were to help families purchase homes which they could not otherwise afford. Although they said that HGTV did not give them a reason for the cancellation - most speculate that it is due to a perception that the Benham Brothers are anti-LGBT.

Note: There is no political, religious or other agenda in this or any post on this site.

This video is a fantastic body language teaching video for it contains a multitude of great examples. Below are just two of them:

Jason (in blue) displays one of several microexpressions of contempt on the right side of his face. To some this nonverbal configuration may (very erroneously) resemble a slight smile. Others may call it a snarl or look of smugness. Here it is signified by an upturning of the right corner of his mouth and a tightening of the "mustache area" along with a flaring of his right nostril. This example occurs at 0:50 just as he anticipates Erin Burnett playing an audio recording of his brother speaking on a radio interview in September 2012. This is an image capture of that moment.

This image, taken from the 1:52 mark shows three subtle emotions on Jason Benham's face - anger, contempt and disgust.

The partial eyelid closure acts as an amplifier of all three of these emotions.

Can you see all the nonverbal components of these emotions?

What other body language did you see in this interview?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2810: Seth Rogen on Graham Norton regarding "Bound 2" Parody - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Seth Rogen recently made an appearance on The Graham Norton show. In the above interview he speaks about his and James Franco's video spoof of Kanye West's and Kim Kardashian's video "Bound 2". It's always great to evaluate the nonverbal signals of actors - because even though they are professionals at getting their audiences to suspend their disbelief - when they are just being themselves they are no better at fooling us than the next person on the street.

In this moment (1:41 - 1:42), Rogen is seen displaying a partial "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) in an effort to suppress his laughter - which rapidly fails.

The ILR is one way the subconscious brain attempts to suppress a crescendo emotional display on the face - and an inward building of that same emotion.

And although the ILR is usually seen associated with negative emotions - particularly sadness or anger - here Rogen's psyche utilizes it to suppress laughter.

Just after Seth says, ".... Someone, someone had to." (parody the video) he rubs his nose with his right hand (1:49 - 1:50).

Obviously no one "had to" - this is a simple deception/hyperbole. We understand this is a simple comedic statement - and yet even with this "white lie" the body language display still holds true.

Tons of other nonverbal tells here - do you see a particular MAP surrogate indicative of other deception?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2809: Oscar Pistorius, Reeva Steenkamp and Kim Myers - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Oscar Pistorius's trial for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp took an unexpected and bizarre turn today.

Today a former roommate of Steenkamp's - Ms. Kim Myers accused (via an attorney) the Blade Runner of allegedly saying, "How do you sleep at night?" to her during the trial. The remark was described as being delivered "in a very sinister way" and was alleged to have been over-heard by a journalist.

What very specific and telling nonverbal is Ms. Myers displaying in this image?

This classic unilateral elevated forehead and eyebrow is a classic nonverbal tell for disbelief.

What other body language modifiers are present in this moment which amplifies Oscar's incredulity?

Mr. Pistorius's jaw clench in this moment is a clear and highly characteristic signal of anger.

What other more subtle signals are seen here which are also indicative of anger?
