Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3594: Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Fareed Zakaria - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although it is brief, this video segment of Vladimir Putin and Fareed Zakaria is packed with some very classic and particularly telling nonverbal signals. Several of these are highlighted below.

During the early portions of the above video segment (0:17 - 0:18, 0:20) - and once again at towards the end (1:55 - 1:58), Mr. Putin's left middle finger is covering his lips in a horizontal orientation.

This is an example of a very specific body language display known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

The display of a middle finger (giving "The Finger") extended while the other digits are flexed (contracted) is one type of an "Emblem" - the meaning of which is well acknowledged and known World-wide. Of course this gesture, when fully expressed, is held high and blatantly displayed. Yet here it is horizontal and touching his lips. Moreover the other fingers and the thumb are only slightly flexed. Thus this "bird" is not classically displayed - but camouflaged and partial. The great majority of the time this variety of derogatory nonverbal emblem is performed subconsciously - and this is why it is referred to as a "Slip".

Partial Emblematic Slip

Vladimir is saying,
"F*cK You!"

An additional aspect of this display is that it's occurring over his mouth - thus the Russian President is not only flipping the bird, but he is also telling Fareed Zakaria to hush - or to be quiet. Mr. Putin does not want this question to be asked. Mr. Putin then corrected Mr. Zakaria - calling Donald Trump "a bright person" rather than "brilliant", "outstanding" or "talented".

0:20

Notice the sudden lateral displacement of Putin's lips to his right captured here (Please view the video to more fully appreciate the dynamics of this subset behavior).

Beneath the obscenity, this "Lateral Lip Purse" is momentarily letting us inside of Putin's Mind. Although Vladimir has anticipated this question regarding Trump - this signal is telling us he's in the process of deciding exactly how to answer. Typically the lateral lip purse shows us the decision is between two or sometimes three choices - rather than a multitude.

1:56

Here we see another tell - a "Loose Forward Lip Purse" mostly covered by Vladimir's finger.

A loose forward lip purse signals a covert plan and/or a clandestine disagreement. These are displayed by a person who perceives himself to be a relative alpha with respect to whomever they're interacting. They also believe they have a good chance of successfully executing their plan.

What body language display(s) tell us whether Putin's obscenity was directed at the person asking the question (Fareed Zakaria) or the subject of the question (Donald Trump) - or both?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3428: Jenna Dewan Tatum performs Ginuwine's "Pony" - Lip Sync Battle - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this Lip Sync Battle teaser-preview, Jenna Dewan Tatum displayed her dance and lip syncing skills performing Ginuwine's Pony - in a form of satirical one-upmanship - very obviously referencing (and using as a prop) her husband, Channing Tatum, and his performance in Magic Mike.

Yet when Jenna was speaking with L.L. Cool J afterward, as he said, "Is, is this like a typical night at the Tatum, household, or?"

Jenna answers, "Totally. We lap dance every night."

During L.L. Cool J's question, Jenna looks away from him (in this context that direction of gaze is very important) and raises her middle finger to her mouth.

She scratches her lip - to alleviate what was a highly probable and very real itch - (although secondarily generated by the relative anxiety she was experiencing - via the release of the neurotransmitter natriuretic polypeptide b [Nppb]).

This is a fantastic example of what in nonverbal lingo is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip.

An emblem (here the middle finger) is a nonverbal signal, the meaning of which has a highly specific and widely accepted meaning within a geographic region, country or culture. Some emblems are essentially universal - regardless of where they're used or who displays them.

This emblem however is not fully displayed - thus it is a partial one. And it's referred to as a "slip", because it's not fully conscious - and indeed, it may very well be entirely subconscious - ergo the body language nomenclature, "Partial Emblematic Slip".

We do not know the specific cause of it, and it will probably never be evident once this full episode is available for viewing, yet you can be sure that Jenna Dewan Tatum does not much care for L.L. Cool J.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2817: Rep. Joe Garcia Picks His Ear & Eats it - What his Body Language Really is Saying (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During a house judiciary meeting last Wednesday, Joe Garcia (D - FL) stuck a finger in his ear and then proceeded to eat the pickings. While this act is certainly repulsive to most, there is more going on here than just a lesson in hygiene gone wrong.

The body language Representative Garcia displays in this moment is an ear screw. He either does not believe the Rep. Suzan DelBene (D - WA) - (who is talking when he commits this nonverbal) - or the person(s) to whom she is addressing (primarily the chairman - Bob Goodlatte, R - VA).

Intriguingly Mr. Garcia is using his middle finger to commit the ear screw. This is one example of a class of nonverbals known as "Partial Emblematic Slips" (Ekman). These are defined as emblems (a local, regional or universal body language symbol) which is less-than-fully-displayed - and more typically but not always involves the hands - and is displayed in a non-standard position (here in ear and not fully isolated from the other digits rather than on direct display in front of one's body). Greater than ninety-nine percent of the time this nonverbal is initiated and carried out subconsciously.

This body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates that Representative Garcia not only does NOT believe what is being said or the person to whom it's being said - but he is also flipping them the bird as well.

It is not a coincidence that Garcia simultaneously is displaying contempt with the right side of his mid-face (do you see all of these contempt components?).

Here Rep. Garcia's contempt clearly continues.

The partial emblematic slip is again displayed a few seconds later.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2740: Matthew McConaughey Tells Us What He REALLY THINKS about the Motion Picture Academy - Body Language, Ear Screws and Deception (PHOTO)

Last night Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for his role as Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyer's Club". He very much deserved it. Mr. McConaughey is an outstanding actor and he routinely suspends the disbelief of millions. In speaking after winning "Best Actor in a Leading Role", his own human thought-feelings were on display for the World to see - with no re-takes.

Early in his acceptance speech, McConaughey says, " ...[laughter] Thank you - Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you - to the Academy for this - all 6000 members ...". Just as he says, "... all 6000 ...", he shows us an "Ear Screw" (image above). Additionally, this nonverbal is performed with his middle finger. This body language MAP displayed within this cluster-context (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates that McConaughey was lying when he was thanking all 6000 members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (this was one group to whom he was NOT thankful - although he certainly sincerely thankful to many others) and he was simultaneously flipping some of the 6000 the bird.

This nontraditional location (in his ear rather than high and in front of one's body) of an emblem (a nonverbal, the meaning of which is regionally or universally known, in this case the derogatory display of his middle finger) is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip" (Ekman) - and it is highly consistent with deception.

This is yet another example of just how subconscious body language is - and despite the fact that Matthew McConaughey gets paid to lie to us (and we reward him and others with huge income and status for being very good at it) - he is only human. And particularly when he plays himself, his nonverbals will betray him just like the rest of us.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication # Analysis 1492:
Ben Bernanke's Duping Delight &
Partial Emblematic Slip

Ben Bernanke is showing us a sincere but suppressed smile in this image. His eyes, particularly his lower lids are great examples of the specific configurations we should always see with an authentic smile of joy-happiness (see Secret # 353: Brad Pitt's Smiling Eyes - Sincere and Insincere Smiles). The mouth component of his smile is suppressed - not being opened. The primary reason he is smiling it is directly related to what his left hand is doing - specifically the middle finger. The FED Chairman is flipping off whoever is speaking.

An Emblem is a specific body language term for a signal that is recognized within a region, culture, country - or in this case worldwide. Its meaning is non-ambiguous within that described region. But emblems can vary from culture to culture, etc. - so great care must be given so as to not misinterpret their meanings. An emblem may be a positive in one country and quite derogatory in another. A Partial Emblem is a modification of the complete emblem - such that it is displayed in a not-traditional location. It is also common for partial emblems to be displayed in fragmented form - i.e. not fully unfurled. A Partial Emblematic Slip (PES) is a subconscious display of an emblem which often contradicts the words being spoken

Note also the force being applied by Ben's middle finger to his left temple region. It is displacing the skin and underlying tissue easily 1.5 cm or more. This signal of force speaks to the amplitude of his negative emotional tone. If his finger were a pencil, it would have broken.

Here, Mr. Bernanke is displaying his smile in unison with giving the Bird. Thus his smile is a variation of  "Duping Delight". The Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank may be smiling for several reasons, but the primary (perhaps only) one is that he is fooling (duping) the speaker - giving him a profane gesture in a camouflaged manner. Ben is sincerely happy - yes ... but not for the usual reasons. When a partial emblematic slip is displayed in the company of language with which is not congruent - always believe the body language. In such scenarios, the PES is a highly reliable method of deception detention (Ekman).
