Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3211: Jerry Seinfeld, David Remnick, Seth Meyers & a Body Language Signal of Memory Recall (VIDEO, PHOTO)

During this dialog between Jerry Seinfeld, David Remnick and Seth Meyers, there is a fantastic example of a nonverbal signal of memory recall. Specifically, during the segment from 2:56 - 3:01, David Remnick (Editor-in-Chief of The New Yorker) looks relatively straight ahead (in ~ primary gaze) while his eyes make several relatively high frequency, low amplitude movements back and forth. These are known as "saccades" (or saccade-like movements). This particular type of saccade (of which there are many - and most have nothing at all to do with body language - but are significant of other physiology) is highly consistent with recalling memory - usually visually. David Remnick had for a moment forgot which magazine cover Caitlyn Jenner had initially appeared and he recalled it by first "seeing" the Vanity Fair cover in his mind's eye - and this visual trigger allowed him to then recall the publication's name. Of course this is something we all do. When Remnick's eyes were moving back and forth during this "Primary Gaze Saccade" - a portion of his brain dedicated to vision (visual cortex) was truly seeing the now iconic magazine cover. Here is an outstanding example of this body language phenomenon.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3210: Matteo Renzi, Christine Lagarde, Barack Obama and Up-Regulating Alpha Emotions (PHOTOS)

The above photo was taken this past weekend at the G7 Summit in Germany (Bavaria). In the foreground from left to right are Matteo Renzi (The Prime Minister of Italy), Christine Lagarde (Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund) and U.S. President Barack Obama.

With respect to their body language, Obama and Lagarde have similar displays - with their hands clasped behind their backs. While it certainly would give us more nuance to see how their hands/wrists/fingers are held - this nonverbal configuration projects a high level of confidence. Like most alpha displays, if it is held for too long or is performed too frequently, it will backfire and send signals of arrogance, patronizing attitudes and condescending emotional tones. Thus because this is a photo and not an extended video - we cannot fully contextualize their mindsets.

Prime Minister Renzi is adjusting his right shirt cuff. While he certainly could be preparing for a posed, group picture - the vast majority of the time this maneuver is a highly reliable anxiety tell (and in this moment it's absolutely the case). More specifically, this (false) cuff-adjust signals a person whose psyche is attempting to dialing-up their alpha qualities. This particular alpha up-regulator is much more common in men (and there are others too - can you name some? What are a few common female analogs?).

The elevated central forehead contraction Renzi is displaying coupled with his slight, mouth pseudo-smile is an extremely common facial cluster of a person who is trying to "look more important" than they feel - and is prevalent in high school dances or on many an attorney's face in the courtroom. Think of Renzi's entire nonverbal cluster as saying, "I want to have swagger, but for right now I'm faking it."

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3209: G7 Summit - Angela Merkel, Barack Obama and Matteo Renzi - and a Major Body Language Faux Pas (PHOTO)

This photo should make you cringe - if it doesn't, there's a good chance you're a narcissist or you have a degree of autism. This should be true (perhaps even more so) even if you're a democrat, voted for Barack Obama and you believe he's doing a good job. Here the American President is shown invading the personal spaces (more specifically within the intimate spaces) of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi at the 2015 G7 meeting in the German State of Bavaria over the weekend.

With some notable exceptions (e.g. greetings/handshakes, crowded public transportation, stadiums/theaters, sporting contests, self-defense, etc.) entering into someone's intimate space or personal space should only be done when there is a significant level of familiarity and affection present. To do so otherwise destroys rapport and is a provoking behavior. It makes people emotionally uncomfortable. Thus it alters their perception of you too. A person may keep a "smile" (though not a sincere one) on their face, however such invasive actions will alienate. If you want to build bridges and/or you need to win people over to your way of thinking - keep this in mind. It doesn't matter who you are or what you've accomplished - it applies to everyone.

Oh, and this over-growth of the ego doesn't discriminate either ....

On Friday in Seattle, a fan blew a kiss to Tampa Bay Pitcher Chris Archer. The video above was uploaded to YouTube yesterday and has gone viral - for Archer pretends to catch the kiss - and then throws it away. Yet from a body language perspective there was a second or two in between which is very telling. These nonverbal signals are outlined and captured below in still images.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3207: Vladimir Putin, Pope Francis and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Pope Francis is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin later this week at the Vatican. No doubt the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria will be foremost on the Pope's mind. The above image was taken from their last meeting in November 2013.

Putin's facial expression in this moment displays a forehead contraction (across its entire width) together with partially closed upper eyelids. This nonverbal cluster sends signals of arrogance and impatient-dismissal (e.g., a la' Marshawn Lynch, "I'm just here so I don't get fined/more trade sanctions, etc.") - Emotions which Vladimir projects frequently.

Not to be overlooked is Vladimir's lack of hand visibility. In the best case scenario, when the hands are not visible or mostly covered, a person is projecting beta emotions and/or disengaged. In addition, those individuals in the process of lying will (subconsciously) very often keep their hands below the table or otherwise hidden. Those who wish to build rapport and engender trust should keep their hands in view.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3206: Kyrie Irving, NBA Finals, a Broken Knee Cap, Physical Pain & Body Language (PHOTO)

Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard, unfortunately fractured his left kneecap in game one of the NBA Finals vs. the Golden State Warriors. He will miss the remainder of the finals with an estimated recovery time of three to four months. Golden State won the game 108-100.

From a body language perspective, whenever anyone is in significant physical pain or emotional pain, their central forehead will be contracted and elevated as Irving's is here. It's extremely important that there's a simultaneous congruent mouth expression as well (also displayed by Irving). If a person claims they are in moderate to severe physical pain and their central forehead is not contracted - they are feigning. Irving has the contributing emotional factor of knowing he will miss the rest of the 2015 NBA finals - and not be able to help the city of Cleveland win their first major sports title since the Browns in 1964.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3205: "This is why mom doesn't F@cking love you!" - Lance Kale Jackman fires a gun in the Family Living Room - A Body Language Signal of Laughter Suppression (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this recently viral video, Lance Kale Jackman fires a handgun in the family living Room (It's not clear whether this was a blank or live round). His brother, shocked, then yells, "This is why mom doesn't fucking love you!"

From a body language perspective, this 9.1 second video provides a great illustration of a particular nonverbal signal known as an "Inward Lip Roll". The inward lip roll (aka ILR) is one method the psyche uses for both the inward down-regulation of, as well as the outward suppression of an emotion which, either momentarily or of longer duration, he/she does not want to be discovered or fully expressed. Most of the time an ILR is suppressing a negative emotion (anger, disgust, etc.). However here the emotion being squelched is joy/laughter - albeit in a considerably atypical scenario.

2.1 seconds

Mr. Jackman is about to fire a revolver - an action of which his brother is yet unaware. 

His lips are rolled inward in an effort to try and suppress his joy-laughter. An ILR involves the teeth biting down on the lips (sometimes gently, sometimes with significant force). Note his mid-face is taught - which is easily seen in his "mustache area" and flared nostrils.

2.7 seconds

The instant he fires the gun, Jackman's inward lip roll begins to rapidly disappear - for he no longer has the need to keep a secret.

Lance Jackman begins to break into a full laughter. Notice that his blushing, which was also present earlier - is now more fully expressed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3204: "Inside Out" Movie Clip - Mostly Correct, but some Wrong Expressions for Emotion-Characters (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Disney - Pixar, along with other animation studios, have for the past 15 years or so, been very accurate with respect to their nonverbal illustrations on their characters. Said another way - the emotions, vocal qualities and nonverbal signals of their characters have been highly congruent - a simple principle human actors would be well-advised to heed. Yet sometimes even they are off their game.

Take for example the soon-to-be-released animated film, "Inside Out". In this movie, emotions are embodied within separate characters inside a little girl (Riley) - collectively making up her emotional psyche. The plot revolves around the turmoil created when Riley and her parents relocate from the Mid-West U.S. to San Francisco.

Here, at 0:20, the character-emotion of disgust (whose voice is played by Mindy Kaling) accurately projects her namesake while repelling from broccoli.

More accurate disgust as Kaling's character tries not to vomit (0:21)

Yet if we flashback to 0:16 we see the very classic and distinctive asymmetrical expression of contempt.

Contempt is fundamentally different from disgust, for contempt must be directed at a person or group of people - never a non-person. Disgust however can and is very often directed towards disliked food, non-living things - as well as people.

In this moment, at 0:21.5, we see Riley displaying emotional pain - with an elevated central forehead contraction (CFC) with some contempt display as well (note however, that this contempt is on the opposite side of her mouth and expressed to a significantly lesser degree than her falsely-directed psyche character).

This is indeed an accurate expression and very consistent with what one expect if this were a real-world scenario. It's NOT however disgust as Mindy Kaling's psyche disgust character is supposed to be transmitting.

Riley's torso-neck-head leaning away from her broccoli and also her non-direct gaze (with rotated head) are also very congruent body language.

A huge percentage of the time professional photographers pose their subjects in body language which is off the emotional-context mark - way off. They may be good at lighting, knowing the best angle, picking the right filter or lens - but relatively few professional photographers have any significant amount of nonverbal knowledge. The same is true for advertising professionals. The wrong expressions and body language are often used despite teams of people, months of effort and millions or even tens of millions of dollars spent (or more).

If Annie Leibovitz is trying to capture a successfully transitioning Caitlyn Jenner - from a body language perspective - she hits the mark. Of course a magazine cover presents a very different and artificial scenario vs. interpreting body language in real-time and real-life, however Jenner's arms behind her back with her hands clasped - projects a strength, confidence and alpha emotional tone - which is certainly in her character. It also sends signals of significant openness - and who in World history has made a more open transition? While of course currently there are other important reasons for such a configuration, by keeping her legs tightly crossed - Jenner still transmits femininity (as do her bare shoulders).

By rotating Caitlyn's head to one side (projecting coyness), tilting her head/neck downwards - makes it so that in order to have eye contact with the camera, she must look up - which necessitates more widely open eyes (This is true with her right eye, while Jenner's droopy left lid [ptosis] gives the secondary effect of "bedroom eyes" here - adding to the sexuality). The combination of Jenner's head & neck tilted down - yet upwardly gazing with Leibovitz's slightly downward camera angle, also projects a "come hither" look - which is often emulated in every day flirting and romance.

The one suggestion I would make regarding this specific photo, is to not have Kaitlyn's back a corner. This component gives the feeling of her being bad, trapped or "cornered" - and is a visual metaphor suggesting a decision that is punishment or forced, rather one of free will - which of course is an important sentiment and distinction.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3202: FIFA's Jack Warner Cites 'The Onion' in His Own Defense - Insincerity Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jack Warner, the  former vice president of FIFA, who along with other FIFA officials were arrested last week on money laundering, racketeering, bribery and wire fraud - yesterday defended himself against allegations of corruption (alleged by both United States and Swiss authorities) by citing an article from The Onion. Incredibly, Warner was unaware that it was satire.

The above video was uploaded to the internet yesterday and then taken down shortly. A copy of it subsequently went viral. What follows is a specific and very telling body language display.

On two occasions (here, during 3:37- 3:39 and the image immediately below, captured during 3:42 - 3:43) Jack Warner gestures towards his chest (more specifically this is but one body language example of a MAP aka Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier).

Some important details can be seen here. Note that Warner is using his left hand - yet he is right-handed. Warner is also gesturing towards the RIGHT side of his chest. His heart, of course, while partially posterior to the sternum is significantly biased toward the left side. In addition, during both of these moments the former FIFA official is touching only with his finger TIPS - not the palm of his hand (and with the second example, his fingertips do not even quite touch).
 

Any of these three nonverbal signals - 1) Use of non-dominant hand gestures during moments of expected conviction, 2) Touching the right side of the chest during "heartfelt" moments and 3) Finger-tip touching rather than full palmar contact - taken on their own would all be strong red flags for insincerity. All three together in a cluster - and then repeated - absolutely scream strong insincerity.

Later in his monolog, Warner cites and holds up (5:04 - 5:40 and 6:59 - 7:01) a print-out of "The Onion" article - which is, of course, completely satirical - and uses it in his defense.
