Body Language Analysis №4699: Donald Trump's Forward Lip Purse  — Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS with ANALYSIS)

In the image above, Donald Trump is displaying what is known as a Forward Lip Purse — a profoundly telling, under-appreciated, and thus extremely valuable nonverbal behavior.

A Forward Lip Purse is a highly reliable signal of one of three thought-emotions (of which there’s significant):

A. Clandestine plans — the person is planning an act(s) which they’re deliberately keeping from you.

B. Undisclosed Information (i.e., a body language signal of a ‘Lie of Omission’).

C. Undisclosed (fully or partially) disagreements. Crucially, they *may* in fact be voicing *some* disagreement — but their internal disagreement is much stronger than what they’re saying out-loud (verbally).

A large percentage of the time, however, a person will be voicing no disagreement whatsoever — AND they’re displaying a Forward Lip Purse.

Either way (whether they’re voicing little or no disagreement), when you see a Forward Lip Purse — be warned!

Unless it’s in the context of playing/a recognized (and consensual) game atmosphere — if your boss is displaying a Forward Lip Purse — immediately protect your flanks, for they’re planning to fire you.

Similarly, outside an obvious and consensual game scenario — anytime your spouse/partner is displaying a Forward Lip Purse — they’re holding back significant information — and keeping secrets from you.

Why?

Moreover, there’s a high probability they’re actively planning a divorce, its equivalent, or a betrayal of some type.

It’s important to not confuse a Forward Lip Purse from other types of Lip Pursing — i.e., such as a Lateral Lip Purse (here displayed by Scarlett Johansson) which have completely different meanings.

When they’re being observant, individuals who have good body language instincts, but who lack formal nonverbal training will feel sudden cognitive-emotional dissonance when they see Forward Lip Pursing.

A Forward Lip Purse is always displayed by a person who perceives themself to be an alpha personality — with significant intelligence, resources, and/or hidden advantage relative to their audience.

SUMMARY: When you see a Forward Lip Purse, your psyche should be screaming — warning you. They’re lying and/or keeping secrets — and, with high probability, planning to betray you.

Red lights flashing and sirens blaring.

Body Language Analysis №4696: Body Language Surrogates - and the Painting Trump Chose (Indicating his Mindset) During His Response to his Most Recent Indictments

Why did Donald Trump give his response-to-his-federal-indictments speech in front of a painting of Kaiser Wilhelm II?

The background, paintings, photos, people, etc. some choose to include in their public appearances very much are representations of their psyches.

Sometimes these are subconscious/edge-of-consciousness choices (think of these as sorts of reverse-Rorschach tests) — and other times these are very deliberate and not-so-subtle messages.

This is a print (not the original) of a painting by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris of a meeting-negotiation-argument between Teddy Roosevelt and Kaiser Wilhelm II — regarding “The Venezuelan crisis of 1902–1903”.

The Venezuelan Crisis of 1902–1903 was a naval blockade imposed collectively by Germany, Great Britain, and Italy — against Venezuela from December 1902 to February 1903 as a result of Venezuelan President, Cipriano Castro, refusing to pay damages as well as foreign debts suffered by Europeans during the recent Venezuelan civil wars.

Germany also threatened possible occupation of Venezuela — which Roosevelt would not permit (and certainly ran counter to “The Monroe Doctrine”).

This was, by many accounts, when Teddy Roosevelt’s “Speak softly and carry a big stick” policy came into being — at least on the world’s stage.

Roosevelt had considerable cultural sensitivity (he had lived in Dresden as a teen). He had never made public his threats against the Kaiser — and thereby most probably prevented WWI from occurring 12 years earlier.

But one small detail — this meeting never happened. Teddy Roosevelt and Kaiser Wilhelm II never met until 1910 — well after Roosevelt left the White House and, of course, years after the resolution of the Venezuelan Crisis.

During the Venezuela Crisis, Roosevelt and Wilhelm had corresponded via letter, their ambassadors, and their emissaries — but not in-person.

And although they were purported by some to be friends, anything resembling a ‘personal relationship’ was probably much closer to common political hyperbole — and, if so, occurred well after Roosevelt’s Presidency.

While Jean Leon Gerome Ferris was indeed a skilled technical painter (i.e., accuracy of faces, clothing, land, etc.) — he often dramatically oversimplified historical events, and in this case, he blatantly lied with his paint brush.

What’s most obvious in this painting, is the Kaiser’s twisting of his mustache. This MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier) is so classic as to be an absolutely cliché. We all can recall scenes of cartoon villains twisting their mustaches.

Such mustache-twisting conveys the thought-emotions of surreptitious and nefarious intent — as well as the making of clandestine plans. Note all the while, the person doing this (the Kaiser) is perched just above and behind Trump’s right shoulder.

Immediately thereafter, we notice what’s probability the key reason (along with the identity and personality of the person who’s displaying it) that Trump chose this painting to stand in front of — the Kaiser is flashing what in America has recently come to mean “White Power”.

Of course, in 1902 and 1903, this (conventionally termed) “okay” hand gesture (with or without the mustache twisting) lacked this specific meaning, but this simply gives Trump (or Steven Miller, who’s mind the idea was likely hatched) plausible deniability.

The Kaiser is also, along with turning his body away (disrespect) is giving President Roosevelt the “side-eye”. We don’t look directly at those whom we don’t like, don’t believe, don’t respect — as well as those with whom we don’t want to emotionally escalate.

With the exception of perhaps 2 seconds (3:17–3:19), we cannot see Roosevelt’s face — and if we didn’t do a little digging (or we weren’t art historians), we’d never know Teddy was even in this painting.

But we *can see* Abraham Lincoln’s portrait over Wilhelm’s head and his right shoulder (the painter, Ferris, implying that this fictitious meeting also occurred in the White House) — the first Republican President.

While Roosevelt’s hand is on the globe, covering Venezuela, Kaiser Wilhelm is turning his back on President Roosevelt — and the World — while he’s making nefarious plans (or so the Artist is implying — again, this meeting never took place).

I’m not offering up a definitive set of diagnoses for Kaiser Wilhelm II — however, historians often cite that he had Histrionic Personality Disorder, Megalomania, Manic-Depression, and that he was Psychotic.

Trump obviously admires Kaiser Wilhelm II — a man who, while not solely responsible for World War I — his temperament, actions, and choices certainly helped to start it.

It’s crucial to note, that regardless of the skill of the painter, a painting is never actual body language or behavior — and in this case, it distorts history.

(“The map is not the territory.” Alfred Korzybski)

A work of art only represents the end-work of the artist — which itself may or very well may not be an accurate representation of reality — or importantly, the real thought-emotions experienced and/or displayed by the subjects of the art.

SUMMARY: Trump chose to stand with Kaiser Wilhelm II (another megalomaniac) over his right shoulder, thus honoring him.

Kaiser Wilhelm II is a man, who whilst twisting his mustache, is planning obvious nefarious acts — turning his back on Teddy Roosevelt and the rest of the world — and thus together these two despots are dissing Roosevelt’s “Speak softly and carry a big stick” leadership style.

And although its newest meaning in American culture was displayed in this manner 111 years ago, the obvious signal of what the American far-right commonly use as the gesture for “White Power”, the ominousness of Trump’s use of it here, via-surrogacy, cannot be over-stated.

Body Language Analysis No. 3965: Manspreading, Madrid, and a Business Faux Pas - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Recently the city of Madrid has taken measures to limit "Manspreading" on public transportation. Manpreading is the colloquial term for the "Seated Crotch Display" wherein a person (almost always a man) sits with his legs spread wide - thus exposing his crotch. The feet are most frequently positioned sole-downward and the elbows are often protruding laterally in a "maximum space mode".

On a bus, subway, plane, or in other public areas - manspreading is done at the expense - often dramatically - of those seated adjacently.

In crowded public situations, we typically suspend our personal space (intimate space) norms which would never apply to other scenarios. For example, we may touch shoulders, elbows, and upper arms of those sitting next to us on a crowded airplane, because we have no choice and the idea of shared space takes over. But not everyone observes this in equal fashion.

Many men will often default into a manspreading configuration. And while it's certainly no excuse, some men will go a lifetime without realizing what they're doing makes those seated next to them emotionally (and physically) very uncomfortable.

Why do men do this? There are several reasons. In a public setting, the seated crotch display is a mode of asserting dominance - very much akin to young male gorillas beating on their chests. Manspreading in these crowed settings is a type of alpha/hyper-alpha, and often narcissistic behavior.

Men who are in straight, platonic relationships will often sit around a table in this manner. And provided they're relatively equal in the pecking order, men will also do this in a friendly professional/work setting.

Men who manspread frequently very likely have low empathy quotients.

Although most commonly exhibited by straight men, people of all sexual orientations will also sit in a seated crotch display fashion when sexually attracted to another person. In such cases they usually "crotch point" (and foot point) toward the desired individual.

A tremendous problem is created, however, when men use the seated crotch display in professional settings when women are present - or when a subordinate male sits in this manner in the presence of his superior (regardless of their gender). It's particularly common and extremely offensive in the case of male-female business settings. Many men won't ever realize just how often this, and similar actions, will evoke strong negative conditioned responses in women. This occurs to the point of creating other secondary problems, which on the surface don't seem to be related, yet will precipitate the killing of potential sales and negotiations. In such interactions, manspreading is very frequently accompanied by other alpha, hyper-alpha, and narcissistic verbal language, paralanguage, and body language behavior.

Body Language Analysis No. 3940: National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster's Press Conference regarding President Trump's Sharing of Classified Intelligence with the Russians - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

H.R. McMaster's press conference on Tuesday regarding President Trump sharing classified information with the Russians was packed with information. And while a good amount of it was conveyed via verbal language - a truckload arrived in the form of body language.

General McMaster displayed some particularly interesting nonverbal signals as the very first question was being asked (beginning at 6:00 in the above video):

Journalist: Thanks a lot. General McMaster, ah, you came out to the stakeout are yesterday and, ah, and coming out to the stakeout area, you said that the Washington Post story, which came out yesterday afternoon, was false. Do you stick by that assertion? Do you think that every element of that story is false and do you have anything to correct, in terms of what you said at the podium yesterday afternoon?

Now watch his face one more time in slow motion - paying close attention to McMaster's face as the journalist says the words which are color-coded below.

Journalist: Thanks a lot. General McMaster, ah, you came out to the stakeout are yesterday and, ah, and coming out to the stakeout area you said that the Washington Post story, which came out yesterday afternoon, was false. Do you stick by that assertion? Do you think that every element of that story is false and do you have anything to correct, in terms of what you said at the podium yesterday afternoon?

This first image was captured during 6:05, as McMaster was listening to the journalist's words, "... coming out ...". Note the general tilts his head downward (as he also gazes downward) and juts his jaw significantly forward. There are even portions of his lower teeth visible. This is significant for a sizable adrenaline surge. In this moment, he is experiencing the emotion of anger.

In the next instant (during 6:06), as the general was listening to the journalist say, "... the stakeout area ...", we see an excellent example of an Inward Lip Roll (ILR). An inward lip roll is a signal of the psyche's attempt at suppressing the crescendo of strong emotion (both felt internally and displayed externally).

A spit second later, as the journalist spoke the words, "... you said ..." (6:07), General McMaster displays a clear primary expression of Contempt (note his left 'Mustache area tighten and elevate simultaneous with his left flared nostril) - and with a secondary component of Anger (His eyebrows are drawn downward and slightly closer together. There is also increased tension in his lower eyelids). This display is evanescent enough to classify it as a microexpression.

A few seconds later in the same question, as the Journalist says, "... assertion? Do you think ..." (6:15 - 6:16), General McMaster again both gazes and tilts his head downward - as he juts his jaw forward - this time exposing even a bit more of his lower teeth. Once again, this display indicates Anger.

With the very next words of, "... that every element of that ..." (6:16 - 6:17), H.R. McMaster clenches his jaw in Anger - as the tissue below his lower lip bulges up (Frustration) and his chin displays dimpling. This was a very common expression of Barack Obama during his presidency.

Summary: H.R. McMaster felt significant emotional dissonance during his press conference on 16 May 2017. The short segment above demonstrates anger, contempt, frustration - as well as a strong desire to suppress these feelings. It's not possible, with this limited sampling, to determine whether the general feels these emotions toward himself, the journalist asking the question, the Russians, President Trump, or some other person(s).

Body Language Analysis No. 3939: The Russians are Confident - Sergey Lavrov, Rex Tillerson, and Donald Trump - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Maybe you've heard? The Russians came to town. Last Wednesday Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak visited Washington and met with Donald Trump and Rex Tillerson. The image above shows Minister Lavrov and Secretary Tillerson at the State Department.

This particular moment contains some profound nonverbal tells. An analysis follows...

While Minister Lavrov is speaking, Secretary Tillerson's facial expression is primarily that of bitterness and regret - with a secondary (minor) emotion of anger.

Note Tillerson's hands are configured in what is known as a modified "Fig Leaf" (aka "Genital Guarding"). This is a significantly beta nonverbal display and should never be used among geopolitical equals (with the exceptions of funerals, weddings, certain military ceremonies [e.g., at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier], and in the presence of high-level religious figures).

Holding his own hands is pulling Tillerson's shoulders forward and down - making him look weak. In contrast, Lavrov's shoulders are straight, square and strong. The Russian projects power and assertiveness - while in comparison, the American looks diminutive and weakened.

You may have also noticed that Tillerson is squeezing his fingers. Finger squeezing is a subset of hand-wringing behavior - both of which are high anxiety displays. In particular, these are frequently displayed during times of higher levels of stress when it's felt that the likelihood of a successful outcome is increasing small or there are 'feelings of no recourse'.

Tillerson's feet are relatively close together while Lavrov's are positioned in the more recommended mode - slightly less than a shoulder's width apart. In comparison, Tillerson looks like he is 'At Attention' and that Lavrov is his commanding officer.

Standing with your feet close together - particularly when next to someone with a broad stance - engenders feelings of inferiority and subordination. It will lower your confidence (even if standing alone) and - as military leaders knew millennia ago - it makes one much more likely to take orders and acquiesce.

Incredibly, standing with one's feet close together will also cause thoughts and speech to be less fluid.

Thus if you want to improve your ability to:
  • Think on your feet
  • Speak on your feet
  • Be confident and project confidence
  • Be authoritative and project authority
  • Intimidate another person
  • Look like a leader
...then stand like Sergey - and not like Rex.

Summary: While we cannot say specifically why - we can be absolutely sure, that in this moment - Secretary Tillerson's confidence is low while Minister Lavrov's confidence is high. This is especially noteworthy for Tillerson is on his home soil.
