Body Language Analysis No. 4215: NRA's Dana Loesch at CPAC: "Many in Legacy Media Love Mass Shootings" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday at the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in National Harbor, Maryland - the NRA spokesperson, Dana Loesch said very openly and deliberately, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings."

Her nonverbal and paralanguage behavior, as she spoke these words, was quite significant.

As Ms. Loesch bends forward at her waist, she temporarily decreases her height about eight inches. She then rotates her body in a semi-circle, facing different portions of her audience - while taking on a staccato rhythm with her vocal expression: "love - mass - shootings."

She is standing behind a lectern (as well as the chyron/TV banner which is blocking a portion of our view), but if we could see her hands - with high probability they'd be configured in a pseudo-prayer and may also be moving in a hand-chop dynamic, three times with each of the last three words of her sentence.

The cluster/combination of this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage behavior:

• Leaning forward
• Pseudo-prayer (with or without a hand-chop motion)
• Staccato speech
• Loud voice

Indicates the thought-emotions of:

• Melodrama
• Patronizing Emotional Tone
• Manipulation
• Deception

Whenever you see this behavior, alarm bells should go off - for the person who's displaying it - is trying much too hard to convince you of an idea, opinion, course of action, etc.

Why are they being so over-compensatory? Because, with high probability, they are lying.

Intriguingly, those individuals who display these signals are also often trying to convince themselves too - therefore it's frequently a signal of co-rationalization. They're trying to manipulate/convince/lie to you - while doing the same thing to (at least a portion of) their own psyche.

Moreover, people who use this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage cluster are being condescending. They believe you (and/or your group) to be easily manipulated.

Summary: Dana Loesch's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed at the CPAC on Thursday - indicates she is lying when she says, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings." She is being melodramatic and patronizing in an attempt to manipulate her NRA audience, who she believes are easily fooled.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3859: Steve Bannon Touches Reince Priebus' Leg at CPAC - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an interesting moment occurred during Reince Priebus' and Steve Bannon's on-stage interview. Toward the very end of their appearance (24:53), Bannon pats Priebus' right thigh - and Priebus reacts - swiftly swatting him away.

Outside the arena of contact sports, there are only a few causes/reasons why one adult would touch another adult on their thigh. These include:

1. Power/Alpha/Deliberate Intimidation Display
2. Narcissism (a large overlap with cause No.1, above)
3. Sexual (However, this cause is not being suggested in this example)
4. Autistic Spectrum Disorder

What we're seeing here is an amalgam of both a Power/Alpha/Intimidation Behavior display- as well as a very deliberate manifestation of Narcissism (Nos. 1 & 2 above). Entering into another person's personal space without their permission (AKA, "an invasion" of their personal space [intimate space]) - particularly in such a public forum - and especially on the thigh, does not fall within the realm of normal behavior. Bannon is very much letting Priebus know - and letting the World know - who is the alpha male in President Trump's inner circle - and who is the beta.

Intriguingly, just prior to and during the precise instant of contact (24:53), both men were displaying "Tongue Juts" - yet not the same variety. Steve Bannon's jaw and lips were significantly more relaxed - ergo a "Loose Tongue Jut". This signifies the thought-emotion of, "I've been/about to be bad" or "I got caught" (Navarro/Captured in photo immediately above).

However, Reince Priebus' mouth and jaw were more contracted - thus his was a "Tight Tongue Jut" - indicating a Disdain for or being Repulsed/Disgusted by someone or something (isolated in the image immediately above).

A split second later, Priebus then exhibits an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). An inward lip roll is one way our subconscious/edge of consciousness attempts to suppress both the outward display of - and also the inner growth of strong emotions.

After being touched in such a manner in a highly visible and public context, Priebus' experiences a burst of adrenaline and anxiety - resulting in burning"/strong itching of his ear - which of course, he then grabs/rubs (24:56).

You may have also noticed that about a second prior to this (24:55), Priebus makes a "hard swallow" - signaled by his Adam's Apple (thyroid cartilage) vectoring up and down - which is also highly indicative of anxiety (best viewed in the dynamic context of the video).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2337:
Rick Santorum at 2013 CPAC
Body Language,Facial Tension & Hand Tension

We all have moments like this - when we're expressing strong (or very strong) emotions - but their words are very often not congruent. Here former Senator Rick Santorum is seen in this still image in the midst of a speech at the 2013 CPAC. Most people will see that Senator Santorum is expressing anger here. This is primarily displayed by his jaw jut (thrusting forward) and his teeth clenching. He also has significant mid-face tension and nostril dilation. What many people overlook is coexisting hand tension. Anger and anxiety are very often manifested via hand tension - however these are not always as obvious as Santorum's tight, raised fist. If you're unsure as to the subtle emotional signs you're seeing - look at their hands. Often, while their arms may be "resting" at their sides - their hands will very often show tension. This will often betray what's really going on in their emotional brains. Don't just listen to their words - for when their verbal and nonverbal communication are in conflict, the body language is always correct.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2333:
Sen. Rand Paul at 2013 CPAC -
Body Language & variations on the Lip Purse

Senator Rand Paul gave a speech recently at the 2013 CPAC meeting, part of which is included in this video . During multiple occasions in the above edited video (e.g. at 0:30 - 0:31, 1:13 - 1:14 & 1:37 - 1:38) the junior Senator from Kentucky displays variations on the nonverbal known as the "Lip Purse". A lip purse is a highly reliable signal of clandestine disagreement and/or partial disclosure of one's facts and/or intent. It is displayed by someone who feels they have relative power and their lack of full disclosure is coupled with a plan. Only relative-alphas (which is also context-dependent) display the lip purse - thus it signals their belief that they also have the resources and the power to execute their plan/idea.

At 0:30 - 0:31, Senator Paul's lip purse is mildly to moderately tight (note the thinned upper lip) - which along with clandestine withholding of information also signifies an anger component.

At 1:13 - 1:14. This is standard lip purse.

At 1:37 - 1:38. Paul's lip purse is tightened as well - only here he is trying to suppress laughter. The laughter component is easily seen when watching the video.

Negotiation Nonverbal Communication Secret # 1197:
Fingers Held Close Together

This is Rick Santorum at the recent CPAC Conference in Washington D.C. When the index finger and the thumb are held a short distance apart, this may indicate the obvious - "a little bit" or "a small amount", etc. - but this body language can also denote reluctance or skepticism.
