Body Language Analysis No. 4068: Donald Trump's UN Speech - Nikki Haley's Reaction to The President's Threat to "Totally Destroy North Korea" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, President Trump gave his first address to the United Nations. There were many moments during his speech to the General Assembly which drew attention. One, in particular, is highlighted here.

Beginning at 1:33 in the video segment included above, President Trump continues, "No nation, on Earth, has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles. The United States has great strength and patience - but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally, destroy, North Korea Ω Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself - and for his regime. The United States is ready, willing, and able - but hopefully this will not be necessary. That's what the Unat'd [sic] Nations - is all about. That's what the United Nations is for. Let's see how they do."

During 1:55 -1:56, just after Donald Trump says, "... we will have no choice but to totally, destroy, North Korea..." and just before he says, "... Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself - and for his regime..." (notated in the above paragraph by the Ω symbol), the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, aligns her gaze centrally, fixating at mid-distance, blinks, and then displays a microexpression. This particular nonverbal display shows an evanescent and distinctive raising and lowering of both her eyebrows.

The camera is focused at some distance, and it's easier to see this movement on her right side due to the angle of the camera, but there is no doubt of this microexpression. Please watch this video at regular and 1/2 speed to appreciate this dynamic, as it's unable to be expressed in a still image.

Summary: Ambassador Haley was surprised to hear President Trump's words, "we will have no choice but to totally, destroy, North Korea" - and is thus consistent with some speculations that President Trump either went "off-script" - or the language of the speech was changed without Ambassador Haley's knowledge.
