Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3057: Lionel Messi Insane Touch on Japanese TV Program ● "Lifting High 18m" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is an incredible display of strength and agility by the talented footballer Lionel Messi - forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona and captain of the Argentine national team. Yet beyond sport and the entertainment value here, this World-class athlete provides some excellent body language tells in this video - some of which are highlighted below.

1:05 - 1:07 (as well as 1:08 - 1:14 & 1:33 - 1:35)

This body language pattern of facial touching MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is consistent with significant anxiety and contemplation. If this were a closer and a slightly more detailed image, we may also see additional nuance and signs of projecting disagreement.

1:15 Mouth of Fear

In this moment Messi displays his significant trepidation as to whether or not he can be successful.

1:16 - 1:17

Despite this low resolution image, we can see Lionel's facial expression indicating both disagreement and regret

1:29 Loose Forward Lip Purse

This nonverbal is only seen in when a person believes they are in some way (or perhaps all ways) an alpha relative to with whom they're interacting.

It signals a large disparity with what is said openly and what is thought-felt.

When you see this body language you should know that the person has a clandestine disagreement or clandestine plan and they also believe they have a good chance that they will be successful in its execution. This signal is extremely valuable in the context of sales, negotiations and within the legal profession.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2900: Lionel Messi and the Lateral Lip Purse - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

Captain of the 2014 Argentine Football Team as well as a forward for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi is shown here in an often misunderstood nonverbal display - that of the "Lateral Lip Purse".

A lateral lip purse is a sign of an open decision making process. In distinction to the forward lip purse - (which has a clandestine nature to it) - when the lips are pursed to one side, it conveys an honest, open and non-secretive emotional tone. A lateral lip purse is very commonly seen in a grocery store when a person is deciding between two brands or flavors.

An additional component to Messi's expression here is seen in the configuration of his eyebrows - as they are drawn together and lowered. Lionel is a few seconds (or less) into his negative judgment of what he sees is transpiring - and what he BELIEVES should have occurred. He is still open about this judgement however - which is a very significant distinction.

If someone disagrees with you, very often their words will be in agreement. Can you tell the difference? What other signs of open vs. clandestine disagreement can you name?
