On Tuesday 8 April 2014 a fight broke out in the Ukrainian Parliament. It began when the leader of the Communist Party, Petr Simonenko, suggested that lawmakers should hear the demands of the people of Eastern Ukraine.
Take note of the two men in the center of this image with lighter blue jackets (and to lesser degrees on others). Both of their jaws (mandibles) are projected forward in what is known as a "Jaw Jut". This nonverbal signal nearly always accompanies higher levels of adrenaline - and anger . When this body language is present on a man's face (with children too and somewhat less so for women) - there is a substantially increased likelihood that the anger will escalate to violence. If the jaw jut is seen along with fists (early always present on both hands) the chance of a crescendo to violence is even greater.
Tension in the mouth and mid-face very often indicates tension in the hands - and visa versa.
If we were to see images from a few seconds prior to this moment - the jaw jut would have been there prior to the fists being thrown. Thus this particular nonverbal configuration is a very significant and predictive threat assessment tool which should never be ignored. If you see a jaw jut take heed - moving away quickly will often de-escalate the anger.
