Why does Donald Trump point so frequently?

Forefinger finger (Index finger) pointing is offensive in all countries and across all ethnicities. Such practice should be highly discouraged in all but the rarest circumstances. 

Whenever a politician is choosing a journalist for a question, too often they will point with their index finger. But, alternatively, and far superior to forefinger pointing, would be using all the four fingers and the thumb, with one's palm facing upward, the arm partially extended - such that the wrist, elbow, shoulders - and finger joints are all relaxed. Pointing in this palms-up fashion is rapport building, while index finger pointing is rapport destroying.

But most of President Trump's pointing fits entirely into another type of behavior.

Does it raise your flag when a person - who doesn't know you very well - uses words such as: "We", "Our", "Us", "Let's", etc.? It should. This fits into a type of behavior known as "Forced Teaming" (de Becker) and it's a common technique of manipulative individuals. In scenarios which are out of context to mutual familiarity and/or agreement, such verbal forced teaming is an attempt at making you feel as if you belong to the same clan, team, etc. If you're part of any group/belief system, then you'll be significantly more likely to follow established rules/orders - and much more apt to be manipulated.

If you know what to look for, you'll also spot concomitant paralanguage and nonverbal forced teaming analogs.

Donald Trump frequently points to a random person in a crowd, a member of Congress, or his cabinet. When he does so, it's a body language form of forced teaming. It makes the other person feel as if the president temporarily raises them to the level of a peer - even if they literally and logically know it's not actually true. This makes it significantly more difficult to say, "no" to him - and much more likely that he'll be successful at winning others over to his way of thinking.

Summary: Donald Trump's frequent pointing is a common manipulative technique of nonverbal forced teaming.

Body Language Analysis No. 4183: Aly Raisman, Larry Nassar, and USA Gymnastics - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Aly Raisman, a three-time Olympic Gold medalist, addressed Larry Nassar in court last Friday. Nassar was the U.S.A. Gymnastics team physician and has abused hundreds of girls. Thus far, he's been sentenced to 60 years in prison. In addition, Ms. Raisman also leveled criticism at the organization, U.S.A. Gymnastics.

Throughout her statement, Aly Raisman, quite understandably, displayed many examples of contempt, disgust, and anger - and yet the vast majority of these were subtle to mild examples. A profoundly important nonverbal axiom is that, when a person reads a quote, speech, - or in Ms. Raisman's case, a prepared statement - the act of reading (rather than speaking from one's heart - without a script) tends to water-down the accompanying nonverbal displays. They ARE indeed present - but they're just diluted.

One specific nonverbal example display in her statement which was still readily visible was a "Tight Tongue Jut". This is well exemplified during 8:15 - 8:17 (connoted by Ω symbol) just after Aly Raisman says (beginning at 7:58), "Yesterday, USA Gymnastics announced that it was terminating its lease at 'The Ranch' where so many of us were abused. I am glad that it is no longer a national team training site, but USA Gymnastics neglected to mention that they had athletes training there the day they released the statement Ω ... "

A tight tongue jut conveys the thought-emotions of:

• Disdain
• Disgust
• Repulsion

It's helpful to think of the tight tongue jut as, momentarily, the same configuration and emotions as an infant who's rejecting a spoonful of creamed asparagus.

This second image, captured a split second earlier than the first, shows both the early stages of the tight tongue just - along with the clustered hand gesture (Illustrator) of a rhetorical palms-up gesture - nonverbally asking the question of "WTF?"

Summary: Reading a speech, prepared statement, script, etc., - rather than speaking extemporaneously/in an ad lib manner - has the effect of dampening nonverbal displays. While Ms. Raisman does exhibit disgust, disdain, contempt, and repulsion for Larry Nassar - much of her body language is attenuated in the act of reading her statement. For this reason, in some scenarios, it would be wise to consider using bullet points guide us - which allows us to speak in an unscripted, heartfelt, and knowledgeable manner.

Body Language Analysis No. 4182: North, South Korea, and the Olympics - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier this week North Korea and South Korea reached an agreement and will march under a unified flag at next month's Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. They will also have a joint women's ice hockey team. Moreover, their ski teams will be training together in North Korea. In addition, the two Koreas will also be conducting joint cultural events at Mount Kumgang. Although many remain skeptical, these events - and the talks which made them possible - hopefully represents a true thawing of relations between the two countries.

The image above was taken at the commencement of a meeting leading up to this agreement. It's a picture that may have been taken specifically as a media "photo op". If this was the case, it's probable that these men were following orders in prearranged choreography and they may have already shaken hands - prior to this picture. Yet, it's just as likely (or even more so) that this was the time they ever shook hands.

Shaking hands should never be performed over/across a table. The table is not only a physical barrier - but it's also symbolic of a lack of full engagement and less than full commitment. It's a distancing phenomenon and - in some settings, it even suggests duplicity (depending on the other nonverbals with which this is clustered). It's antithetical to the whole idea of a greeting, friendliness, sincerity or engagement - and an excellent example of a signal of emotional dissonance.

Summary: Shaking hands across (over) a table is a serious faux pas. Sincere greetings should build rapport - not send mixed signals. Take the time to walk around the table (or any barrier) and stand closer to the person whom you're greeting. Consider strongly even saying something aloud, such as, "One moment, let me walk around - I don't want to shake your hands over this table" (with a self-deprecating tone of voice along with a sincere smile). This seemingly small detail is not small at all. The few seconds of touching another human being's hand during a handshake are far too often conducted with disrespect and inattention - and a crucial moment is lost.

Body Language Analysis No. 4181: Ann Curry, Matt Lauer, "Verbal Sexual" Harassment, and NBC • Interview • Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Wednesday, Ann Curry was a guest on CBS This Morning. Among the subjects she discussed was Matt Lauer - as well as verbal sexual harassment at NBC. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Ms. Curry during this interview.

1:10 • Ann Curry displays a "Neck of Fear" with the contraction of both her Platysma muscle - and even more so her Sternocleidomastoids (all of these muscles are in the neck) as Norah O'Donnell said, "... and a lot has changed in the television landscape on morning television in the last three months ...". Despite her trying to steel herself - this was a moment of trepidation.

At multiple times during this interview, Ms. Curry displays a Unilateral "Hair Adjustment Behind Ear"(aka HABE). This can also be performed bilaterally. A HABE signals a person is Up-regulating (Dialing-up) their alpha qualities.

Although this is exhibited by all genders and personality variations - it's more common in women who already have alpha personalities, but who realize they need to "step it up" in a particular moment.

2:25 • The expression immediately above is a classic amalgam of both Anger and Disgust, after Ann Curry says, "... I'm not surprised by the allegations ..." (against Matt Lauer).

You may have noticed Ann Curry looking down to her right frequently during this interview. This is one direction many people will commonly gaze toward during moments of reflection when sadness and regret are the primary emotions.

Fascinatingly, this display not only tells us about the emotions of the moment - but people who do this frequently (whether for themselves or when hear about others' experiences/feelings) have both:

• Higher Sincerity Quotients
• Higher Empathy Quotients

3:19 • This classic Bitter-Regret expression is displayed just after Norah O'Donnell clarified Ann Curry's statement of "Verbal Sexual Harassment" at NBC.

4:02 • just after Gayle King said, "... but in the court of public opinion, many people thought that Matt Lauer was behind you leaving The Today Show" - we see Ms. Curry's eyes open wide - along with another episode of tightening of her neck muscles. Both of these displays are indicative of fear. Ann Curry doesn't want to talk about this subject.

4:05 • Only three seconds later, after Ms. King continued and said, "... I'd like to know what you feel about that. We've never talked about that ....", Ms. Curry's upper eyelids open extremely wide (her lower eyelids also open wider and tighten). This is primarily an expression of fear - although there is also an element of surprise. It's likely that Ann Curry was thinking, "I thought you weren't going to go there!"

4:19 • As she says, "... You should ask someone else - I'm not the one to ask about that ..." (if Matt Lauer was the person who got her fired), Ann Curry self-hugs herself in a beta moment of emotional discomfort.

Body Language Analysis No. 4180: White House Press Briefing Re: President Trump's Physical - Dr. Ronny Jackson - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday 16 January, Dr. Ronnie Jackson gave a briefing at the White House regarding President Donald Trump's Health. A full body language analysis of Dr. Jackson would be extremely voluminous. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of that press conference emphasizing one particular nonverbal signal.

During 9:37 just after he says, "In summary, the President's overall health is excellent. His cardiac performance during his physical exam was very good Ω " - Dr. Jackson displays one of many Forward Lip Purses.

He displays another Forward Lip Purse during13:59 as Hallie Jackson is asking, "... The President's personal doctor, memorably said, during the campaign that he would be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency, do you agree with that assessment?"

Another example is seen at 15:02, as Dr. Jackson is speaking (and stuttering) about how Sudafed was the etiology for the President's slurring of his words during a speech on 6 December 2017.

A Forward Lip Purse is a profoundly valuable nonverbal tell (not to confused with a lateral lip purse). It's an indication that those who display it are feeling an undisclosed disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Moreover, forward lip pursing is only displayed by those who feel - at least in that specific context - they have a significant alpha status relative to others with whom they're currently interacting. Additionally, this signal is also an indication that they believe they have a high probability of success in implementing their plan.

Summary: At multiple times during his press conference on Tuesday, Dr. Ronny Jackson's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior indicated deception. One prime example was his multiple displays of forward lip pursing - indicating an undisclosed disagreement and/or a clandestine plan.

Body Language Analysis No. 4179: Senator Dick Durbin questions Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senator Dick Durbin, who was also present in the now infamous meeting last Thursday in the Oval Office, questioned Secretary Nielsen. What follows is a partial nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage analysis of their exchange.

DICK DURBIN (beginning at 2:34): You said on Fox News, "the President used strong language" - what was that strong language?

KIRSTJEN NIELSEN: Ahhh (pseudo-exasperated exhale), let's see - strong language - there Ω was - ahhh - I (stutter) apologies - I don't remember specific word - ahhh - what I was struck with frankly - as I'm sure you were as well - was just the general - ahhh profanity that was used in the room by almost everyone - ahhh and -

DICK DURBIN: Did you hear me use profanity?

KIRSTJEN NIELSEN: No sir, neither did I.

• Note the exhaling "Ahhh" Secretary Nielsen exhibits at the beginning of her answer (2:39 - 2:40) is hyperbolic/melodramatic - as if she were considering this question for the first time.

• The use of "let's see": "let's" is a form of diffusion of responsibility/lack of personal responsibility and is also what is known as "forced teaming" (de Becker) - and is very commonly used when manipulation/deception overlaps with patronizing behavior (Another similar phrase is, "How are we doing?" rather than, "How are you doing?").

• Repeating part of the question ("strong language") at the beginning of an answer - This is extremely commonly exhibited during deception - for it gives the liar additional time to formulate a lie.

• The sentence fragment, "I (stutter) apologies" - was a last-second avoidance of the phrase "I apologize" - representing a momentary slip and then a readjustment/distancing from ownership/responsibility. The word "Apologies" in this context is also a colloquial - detracting from the gravity of testifying before a Senate committee. Such informality has the effect of up-regulating her alpha status (and down-regulating Senator Durbin's) in this setting.

• "I don't remember the specific word" - The qualifying use of the word "specific" is itself a tremendous red flag for deception. Moreover, that Secretary Nielsen knew many other specifics - e.g., including that Senator Durbin did not swear - and with the entire focus of the Oval Office always on the President - it stretches any credulity to the extreme for her to say she doesn't remember.

• The use of the word "frankly" is a profoundly valuable paralanguage tell. With rare exception, it betrays the presence of hidden agenda, insincerity, and deception.

• While many people in the Oval Office meeting last Thursday may have indeed used profanity, that's not the question Senator Durbin asked her. Additionally, her calling attention to others' behavior is a very common manipulation/propaganda technique commonly referred to as "Whataboutism" (aka "Whataboutery").

Secretary Nielson displays two rapid expressions of contempt during 2:42 (a microexpression just before she says, "was" and notated in the above dialog with the symbol Ω ) and during 2:43 (a subtle expression/near-microexpression simultaneous with "ahhh" - and highlighted in red font). The image immediately above captures the second of these two contempt displays. This signals Secretary Nielson's resent for being questioned before the Senate and/or by Senator Durbin.

At multiple times during this testimony, Secretary Nielsen smiled out-of-context. The first example shown in this analysis occurred during 2:47 in the above video, and, although initially partially suppressed, it crescendos throughout her sentence, "... I (stutter) apologies - I don't remember specific word - ahhh ..."

The second smiling out of context display in this exchange was also initially suppressed but then gave way to a full smile during 2:55 at the end of the sentence, "... what I was struck with frankly - as I'm sure you were as well - was just the general - ahhh profanity that was used in the room by almost everyone - ahhh and -".

The act of smiling during almost any testimony is ill-advised. Given Donald Trump's recent highly controversial Oval Office meeting - and the tremendous negative attention/ramifications it has garnered in the last several days - the best case scenario is that smiling in such contexts signals a smugness/arrogance. However, thin-slicing the Secretary's behavior further - such smiling out-of-context is a form of duping delight. This is particularly true here - as with both of these examples, her smiles were initially are suppressed - but then became fully expressed. Her presumed confidence/smugness was, in actuality, an ad-lib ruse/camouflage - a failed act of concealing her true emotions (not unlike coughing a split-second after flatulence).

Summary: Secretary Nielsen's verbal, nonverbal, and paralanguage behavior during this interview were extremely indicative of deception.

On Sunday, Donald Trump arrived at his International Golf Club in Florida. House Majority Leader, Kevin McCarthy was by his side as the President fielded questions from the Press. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this exchange.

After proclaiming, "No, no, I'm not a racist, I am the least racist person you have ever (pause) interviewed, that I can tell you ...", and answering questions regarding North Korea - as well as DACA, and a possible government shutdown - Kevin McCarthy's nonverbal displays grew increasing noteworthy.

In this close crop of the above screen-grab image, the House Majority Leader's Central Forehead is Contracted (CFC) - and, along with his inner (medial) eyebrows - are elevated.

Crucially, any CFC must be interpreted in the context of simultaneous mouth configuration. As the corners of Representative McCarthy's mouth are down-turned, his overall facial expression projects Emotional Pain.

The camera angle doesn't pan-outward to a wider angle until the subject returned to DACA - but when it did we can see that Representative McCarthy was twisting his wedding ring. Immediately prior to our view of this, President Trump had been speaking about North Korea, a possible government shutdown, and denying he was racist.

Summary: Twisting one's ring - particularly a wedding ring - is a reliable symbol of anxiety. The conjunction of such ring rotation together with McCarthy's facial expression of emotional pain - telegraphs an amplified anxiety level. Representative McCarthy was anxious, beta, and emotionally uncomfortable standing next to President Trump.

Body Language Analysis No. 4177: DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen regarding Donald Trump's "Shithole Countries" Statement - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was a guest on Fox News Sunday earlier today. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of that interview.

With the exception of only two seconds (3:40 - 3:42), during the entire time Ms. Nielsen is on camera, her hands are in her lap and not gesturing (Illustrating). As the camera is directed at her face and upper torso - and we can see that her upper arms do not move at all. In this context, a lack of hand-arm gesturing is strongly correlative with anxiety. More specifically, keeping one's hands hidden (beneath a table, in one's pocket's, etc.) during a verbal denial is strongly indicative of deception.

Also during this entire segment, Ms. Nielsen's upper torso was blushing dramatically. Such vasodilation is highly correlative with anxiety - and more specifically - shame and embarrassment. It's signaling she feels "something is out of place".

Now note how much more her upper chest blushes - along with her face - just after she says, "... or a quota of Norway for example ..." (3:41).

 























CHRIS WALLACE (beginning during 0:33): Secretary, you were in that meeting in the Oval Office, did the President say that?

SECRETARY NIELSEN: I don't recall him saying that (slight pause) exact phrase, ah ...

During 0:39, as she says, "... saying that ...", Secretary Nielsen displays a Sincere Smile. This is a quintessential display of smiling out of context - and here, more specifically, this is known as "Duping Delight" (Ekman). This behavior is a nonverbal phenomenon signaling the presence of true joy experienced in the act of perpetrating a lie (the belief one has done so).

 






















CHRIS WALLACE (beginning during 1:16): I, I don't understand, I, I'm goin' to just press back once on this subject. Ah, a, a, it seems to me - you were in the meeting when these comments were made - I can understand you either saying they said - or they were not said - it is pretty shocking language - and to say, "I don't recall", seems implausible. If the President of the United States used the word, "Blankhole", talking about countries in the Oval Office - or didn't say it - I would know.

SECRETARY NIELSEN: I, I [stuttering] I understand the question, it was an impassioned conversation, I don't recall that specific phrase being used - that's all I can say about that.

During 1:49 another (less pronounced) example of duping delight is seen, as the Secretary says, "I don't recall that specific phrase being used - that's all I can say about that."

Two seconds later, during 1:51, the Secretary displays a Hard Swallow followed by a Prolonged Blink. These are not able to be properly observed on a still image - please watch the video to see this behavior in dynamic context. 

Chris Wallace points out that by saying "I don't recall" (which Secretary Nielsen says twice) is "implausible" (his word). And, to thin-slice this from a statement analysis perspective, this phrase is extraordinarily rarely spoken in the context of truthfulness. Moreover, it's a red flag for deliberate efforts at plausible deniability.

In addition, Secretary Nielsen's use of "that exact phrase" and "that specific phrase" are additional statement analysis (paralanguage) qualifiers which, while are attempts at establishing wiggle room - aid in betraying her guilt.

Summary: DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior in this video indicate, with extremely high probability, that was lying when she said, "I don't recall" - referring to allegations that President Trump referred to Haiti and African countries as "Shithole Countries".

Body Language Analysis No. 4176: Donald Trump's "Shit Countries" Comment, Emmanuel Mensah, and Alisyn Camerota - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Alisyn Camerota recently grew emotional during a broadcast while recounting the story of Ghanaian immigrant - Emmanuel Mensah.

Mensah, a 26-year-old US Army Private saved four people from a fire in the Bronx before perishing on 28 December 2017. Only weeks before, on 21 September 2017, Private Mensah became a naturalized US citizen.

On 1 January 2018, Private Mensah was posthumously awarded the "Soldier's Medal" -  which is the Army's highest award for heroism occurring outside of combat. 

Bill Kristol brought to light Mensah's courage and sacrifice in a recent tweet in response to President Trump's "Shithole Countries" remark. In her reading Kristol's tweet and her recounting Mensah's story, Ms. Camerota became saddened and teary-eyed.

To nuance Alisyn Camerota's expression further, you'll note six additional nonverbal signals in context:

• Upward Gaze
• Tongue in Cheek
• Blushing
• Conjunctival injection
• Lateral Jaw Thrusting
• Twisting Lips

These signals, particularly when clustered together, are indicative of sincere efforts at the suppression of tears (e.g., when a person is trying not to cry). Of course, there are some people who can "fake cry" (e.g., North Koreans who feign tears in the presence of Kim Jong-un) - but in such scenarios, these individuals would rarely display any of these individual signals of crying suppression - and essentially never do so in a clustered combination.

Summary: Ironically, the specific nonverbal manner in which Alisyn Camerota is suppressing her tears, indicates her tears and sadness are indeed sincere.
