Body Language Analysis No. 4081: Catalonia's Referendum vs. Spain's Control - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The government of Catalonia reports that 90% of the voters who took part in a referendum election on 1 October 2017 voted for independence. Spain has ruled the election illegal and ordered that it be shut down. Spanish national police were deployed. At many polling stations violence ensued - and at some locations, police confiscated the ballot boxes. Some reports claim as many as 888 people were injured.

The image above was taken in Barcelona. Note the position of the woman's head, neck, torso, and arms. Her torso and neck are both angled forward, while her head and upper arms are vectored backward.

From a body language perspective, the backward angle of her head is an extremely common component of contempt, disgust, and anger. This lateral, profile-view clearly demonstrates the colloquial of "Looking Down the Nose" at someone.

In any type of highly polarized conflict - more so than anger - disgust and contempt are the more extreme emotions - and intriguingly necessary for an "Us versus Them" mentality. Contempt and Disgust are psychologically necessary in order to look at another person or group as "beneath you" - and, in more extreme cases, "less than human". Viewing other people with contempt and disgust are central behaviors to all prejudice, mass killings, genocide, and war.
