Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3654: Hope Solo Calls Swedish Team "Cowards" after US Loss in Rio - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

Hope Solo called the Swedish football (soccer) team "cowards" and "cowardly" after the US lost to Sweden 4-3 in penalty kicks after 1-1 in regulation. The US lost was the Americans' earliest exit ever from the Olympics.

After the match Solo said,

"Sweden dropped back. They didn't want to open play. They didn’t want to pass the ball around. They didn’t want to play great soccer, entertaining soccer. It was a combative game. A physical game. Exactly what they wanted. Exactly what their game plan was. We had that style of play when Pia was our coach. I think it was very cowardly. But they won, they’re moving on. And we’re going home."

as well as

We played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly, firmly believe that.

In the image above we can clearly see a classic nonverbal cluster: Hope Solo's thinned and horizontally-oriented lips, her jaw jutting forward and clenched, her mid-facial tension, her nostrils flaring, her eyelids opened significantly wider than baseline, with tightened lower eyelids and her central (inner aka medial) eyebrows lowered. This facial expression is very characteristic of mid-to-high levels of anger.

Those individuals who cannot channel their anger and in particular who cannot let go of their anger - have a much higher likelihood of heart disease as well as impulse control disorder. Solo's use of the words "coward" and "cowardly" in this context are indicative of this disability.
