Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3483: Kate Winslet's Reaction to Leonardo DiCaprio's Oscar for Best Actor - Body Language (PHOTOS)

This is Kate Winslet just after Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Revenant.

When evaluating this moment from a nonverbal perspective, there several crucial components which are very telling. Grouped together these signals are called a "cluster".

1. Note Kate's central forehead is contracted and elevated (elevated CFC). This is seen concomitant with her inner (medial) eyebrow also being raised.

2. Kate's Eyelids are opened up significantly wider than baseline - with some tension in her lower eyelids. We can see some redness in the whites (conjunctiva) of her eyes - together with some tears.

3. Her hands are touching and partially covering her mouth. Whenever a person's hand(s) are touching the face - particularly when covering the mouth, nose and eyes in reaction to something happening to another person (or animal) - there is a very significant component of EMPATHY present.

4. Whenever there's an elevated CFC present, it's crucial to immediately evaluate the configuration of the mouth. Here, although Ms. Winslet's mouth is partially covered - yet we can see she is certainly not smiling - even though she's in deep empathy with Leo during a time of recognition for his accomplishment. What specific emotion would you say her mouth is conveying if it were the only part of her face you could see?

Summary: Kate Winslet is feeling very strong empathy for Leonardo DiCaprio. People who routinely display such a body language cluster for others have a high empathy quotient.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3469: Leonardo DiCaprio and Dame Maggie Smith on BAFTA Awards Kiss Cam - The British Academy Film Awards - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Leonardo DiCaprio and Dame Maggie Smith provided a fantastic body language moment during the 2016 Awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. What's particularly fascinating here, is the rapid contrasts of two varieties of tongue juts - with entirely different meanings.

This image was captured during 1:09 in the above video excerpt.

Here, in a close-up of the photo above, Ms. Smith had not yet processed that the Kiss Cam had just been turned to her and Mr. DiCaprio.

Maggie Smith is displaying a Tight Forward Tongue Jut - which is, much like an infant repelling her creamed corn, is repulsed by what she had just seen - and she's trying to "push it away". Her lips are held tightly together as her tongue pushes out - and almost always this is directed forward.

About two-seconds later during 1:11.2, we see Leo display a "Loose Tongue Jut" which indicates, "I've just been caught" (Navarro). His lips are not held together, yet his also tongue juts out.



Note Maggie's face has begun to morph to that of surprise (immediately above image).

Less than a second later at 1:11.7, Maggie Smith is in a full expression of surprise. Note that her eyebrows are dramatically elevated, her eyelids are opened extremely wide and her mouth is opened in a classic, wide, horizontal oval with NO TEETH DISPLAYED. With false surprise (feigned surprise) teeth are visible, thus Maggie's surprise is very sincere.

If you look carefully at Ms. Smith's eyes, you'll notice her pupils are more widely dilated when her surprise emotion is more fully manifested.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3432: Leonardo DiCaprio reacts to Lady Gaga at Golden Globe Awards (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last night at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards, Leonardo DiCaprio won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in The Revenant (which also won for Best Motion Picture - Drama). Yet what received more attention in the short term was DiCaprio's reaction when Lady Gaga bumped into him on her way up to accept her award for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel.

This interaction is included as a portion of the video above and provides an excellent example of some fundamental - yet commonly misunderstood nonverbal signals (for almost everyone misinterpreted this facial expression on this occasion).

Lady Gaga had yet to make contact with him.

DiCaprio's face displays a sincere smile giving way to (temporarily and simultaneous with) the rapid microexpression appearance of a "Mouth of Fear". Of course this is simple social fear.

Watching this portion of the video you will note that Leonardo makes an "Eyebrow Flash" with his eyelids still partially closed (as is required for a sincere smile).

Dicaprio's sincere smile is nearly gone from his face - as his mouth takes on more of a fear component - albeit mild.








Why is Leonardo rubbing/scratching near his right eye/nose?

Conclusion: DiCaprio's explanation of, "I just didn't know what was passing me, that's all, I was like, 'Ooooh!' " - is an honest (subjective) account. From a body language analysis we can say more specifically (and objectively) that Leo had a momentary social fear response followed by an embarrassment-disbelief-emotional processing response.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2395: Carey Mulligan on Jimmy Fallon on The Great Gatsby & Acting with Leonardo DiCaprio

Carey Mulligan who plays Daisy Buchanan in the most recent rendition of "The Great Gatsby" is featured recently on Late Night Jimmy Fallon. She is a very talented actress, yet of course she is human. Her body language betrays her true emotions - as it also does for those of us who do not act professionally for a living (However acting transpires all around us - and constantly. How good are you at spotting it?). Her anxiety is demonstrated by a number of nonverbal tells here. One way the beautiful actress displays this is exampled in the repeated MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) of her rubbing her thighs & her knees (e.g. 0:30 - 0:42). At other times she can be seen rubbing the arm of her chair (e.g. 0:17 - 0:19). This is a type of "MAP surrogate", where an object is substituted for part of the body. Such surrogate self-touching is indeed a similar behavior and although slightly masked, it is also indicative of significant anxiety.
