Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3774: Luke Bryan Hits/Slaps a Fan For Flipping Him Off - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Luke Bryan hit or slapped a man in the audience Wednesday night during a concert in Nashville. The event was The Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam - which is a benefit concert for military veterans. It appears that Bryan's action was in retaliation for the man flipping Bryan the middle finger.

Bryan's hand and arm positions before the altercation were (naturally) quite active - indicative of a high alpha configuration.

As he wash holding/blocking the man's right hand with his left hand, Bryan simultaneously strikes or slaps the audience member (0:15).

Here the moment is viewed from another angle.

Immediately afterward, as he walks away, Bryan then pulls-in his left hand for a prolonged period. His right elbow is also not high alpha (not pointed out) - but also pulled in toward his torso. This is a profound beta body language switch - immediately following a hyper-alpha, high adrenaline state (hitting/slapping another person) as well as his preceding high-alpha state of dancing/performing on stage.

The immediate switch to a significantly beta body language (and thus also a beta emotional tone) tell us that Bryan thought he was wrong to hit or slap the man. He feels guilty. If, in that moment, he felt he was correct and justified in his actions, Luke Bryan would have maintained his high-alpha body language (swagger).

An interesting detail here is that as Bryan strikes or slaps the man - there is no "thunk" or sound of impact - as the microphone was in his right hand (his striking hand). Moreover Bryan's singing voice is not diminished despite the fact that the microphone is momentarily away from his mouth (0:17). These observations are highly suggestive that Luke Bryan was lip syncing this song.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3594: Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Fareed Zakaria - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Although it is brief, this video segment of Vladimir Putin and Fareed Zakaria is packed with some very classic and particularly telling nonverbal signals. Several of these are highlighted below.

During the early portions of the above video segment (0:17 - 0:18, 0:20) - and once again at towards the end (1:55 - 1:58), Mr. Putin's left middle finger is covering his lips in a horizontal orientation.

This is an example of a very specific body language display known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

The display of a middle finger (giving "The Finger") extended while the other digits are flexed (contracted) is one type of an "Emblem" - the meaning of which is well acknowledged and known World-wide. Of course this gesture, when fully expressed, is held high and blatantly displayed. Yet here it is horizontal and touching his lips. Moreover the other fingers and the thumb are only slightly flexed. Thus this "bird" is not classically displayed - but camouflaged and partial. The great majority of the time this variety of derogatory nonverbal emblem is performed subconsciously - and this is why it is referred to as a "Slip".

0:17

Partial Emblematic Slip

Vladimir is saying,
"F*cK You!"

An additional aspect of this display is that it's occurring over his mouth - thus the Russian President is not only flipping the bird, but he is also telling Fareed Zakaria to hush - or to be quiet. Mr. Putin does not want this question to be asked. Mr. Putin then corrected Mr. Zakaria - calling Donald Trump "a bright person" rather than "brilliant", "outstanding" or "talented".

0:20

Notice the sudden lateral displacement of Putin's lips to his right captured here (Please view the video to more fully appreciate the dynamics of this subset behavior).

Beneath the obscenity, this "Lateral Lip Purse" is momentarily letting us inside of Putin's Mind. Although Vladimir has anticipated this question regarding Trump - this signal is telling us he's in the process of deciding exactly how to answer. Typically the lateral lip purse shows us the decision is between two or sometimes three choices - rather than a multitude.

1:56

Here we see another tell - a "Loose Forward Lip Purse" mostly covered by Vladimir's finger.

A loose forward lip purse signals a covert plan and/or a clandestine disagreement. These are displayed by a person who perceives himself to be a relative alpha with respect to whomever they're interacting. They also believe they have a good chance of successfully executing their plan.

What body language display(s) tell us whether Putin's obscenity was directed at the person asking the question (Fareed Zakaria) or the subject of the question (Donald Trump) - or both?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2989: Jessica Chastain, "Interstellar", David Letterman and a Partial Emblematic Slip (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Jessica Chastain was on the Late Show with David Letterman recently promoting her new film, "Interstellar". Observing actors during interviews and talk shows are very good settings to watch when endeavoring to learn body language. Watch this short with the sound off and then a second time with regular volume. When great actors using the Stanislavski Method are "in character" - their nonverbals tend to be much more accurate, e.g. their words, vocal qualities and nonverbals are congruent. However when interviewed, and when they're "just being themselves" - they are often no better than average (even the Oscar winners).

What follows are two moments of Jessica Chastain's nonverbal reaction just after David Letterman spoofs "Interstellar" with a clip from a circa 1930's movie.

In this first moment during 10:57, Ms. Chastain's primary emotion is disgust. This is shown by tightening of her mid-face region and nostril flaring. It is amplified by her extended blinking.

Jessica's left arm and hand configuration are both blocking/forming barriers to Dave - yet more importantly her hand is signifying critical evaluation.

Here, less than a second later, Ms. Chastain continues yet refines her critical evaluation. Note her middle finger is both telling Dave to "shut up" and more importantly flipping him off. This is just one - yet a very classic example - for what in body language terminology is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip" (Ekman) and is highly reliable signal. It is partial because it's not the fully displayed bird. This example is subconscious while a full bird is very conscious. An emblem is a nonverbal sign, often but not always involving the hands, the meaning of which is widely known.

Jessica is proud of her work and she believes this was a cheap shot. Note Dave is somewhat mirroring her behavior - not giving her the middle finger, but covering his own mouth with a surrogate finger (his pencil). Dave thought it was a cheap too and is regretting the low-grade jest.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2740: Matthew McConaughey Tells Us What He REALLY THINKS about the Motion Picture Academy - Body Language, Ear Screws and Deception (PHOTO)

Last night Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for his role as Ron Woodroof in "Dallas Buyer's Club". He very much deserved it. Mr. McConaughey is an outstanding actor and he routinely suspends the disbelief of millions. In speaking after winning "Best Actor in a Leading Role", his own human thought-feelings were on display for the World to see - with no re-takes.

Early in his acceptance speech, McConaughey says, " ...[laughter] Thank you - Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you - to the Academy for this - all 6000 members ...". Just as he says, "... all 6000 ...", he shows us an "Ear Screw" (image above). Additionally, this nonverbal is performed with his middle finger. This body language MAP displayed within this cluster-context (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicates that McConaughey was lying when he was thanking all 6000 members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (this was one group to whom he was NOT thankful - although he certainly sincerely thankful to many others) and he was simultaneously flipping some of the 6000 the bird.

This nontraditional location (in his ear rather than high and in front of one's body) of an emblem (a nonverbal, the meaning of which is regionally or universally known, in this case the derogatory display of his middle finger) is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip" (Ekman) - and it is highly consistent with deception.

This is yet another example of just how subconscious body language is - and despite the fact that Matthew McConaughey gets paid to lie to us (and we reward him and others with huge income and status for being very good at it) - he is only human. And particularly when he plays himself, his nonverbals will betray him just like the rest of us.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2342:
Barack Obama at Jerusalem Convention Center in Israel
What the President's Body Language Says to a Heckler

Yesterday the U.S. President revealed two key emotion-thoughts via his body language during his speech at the Jerusalem Convention Center.

First:

Mr. Obama is telling lie - a small lie - but none the less he is still lying. Touching one eye (here the brow at 0:59) during a statement or when answering a factual question is highly indicative of a lie. Though POTUS knows everyone is aware he is joking-lying when he says, " I have to say we actually arranged for that because it made me feel at home", it is still displayed with this nonverbal flag of deception (be wary, for touching both eyes simultaneously has a completely different meaning).

Second:

He is using his middle finger in this MAP (manipulator, adaptor, pacifier). Thus he is "flipping off" the heckler/protester at the same time he prepares to tell his joke-lie. This is but one example of a "Partial Emblematic Slip" (Ekman) wherein the Emblem (here "The Bird") is only displayed in an abbreviated fashion and not in its typical conscious display - for this nonverbal subconsciously initiate and displayed (as 99.9+% are).

The President (like all of us) tend to commit these (and similar tells) with our non-dominant hands when the lie is small (here he uses his right, non-dominant hand) and our dominant hands for higher levels of deception.

Here, as part of this "Deception Cluster", the President bites his right lower lip as he prepares to lie at the 1:00 mark.

Prolonged eyelid closure is manifested as the lip bite continues - a subconscious "blocking-out" of the lie (also at 1:00)

Barack Obama juts his tongue out (at 1:01). Just before the lie. In this cluster, his "Tongue Jut" is akin to a child pushing out food he/she doesn't like. For he doesn't really want to lie - no one does - it tastes bad.

All these body language tells are package in a nonverbal sentence which follow in rapid succession. In body language parlance, this is known as a "cluster".
