Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3158: ESPN's Britt McHenry's Narcissistic, Berating Rant of a Tow Company Employee - A Valuable Body Language Teaching Point (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

ESPN's Britt McHenry has become infamous in the last few days. Her berating of a tow company clerk will win her few fans. Besides her dramatic and multiple verbal examples of narcissism, the viral video also provides multiple classic nonverbal teaching points. The camera is not directed at the best angle to illustrated most of these body language/facial expressions - however one tell in particular she repeats and this is isolated and discussed below.

When asking a sarcastic question, one of a rhetorical nature, or a manipulative (clandestine) question that one already knows (or believes they know) the answer to - the entire eyebrows along with the entire width of the forehead elevate (this premise does not always hold when it's only the inner eyebrows and central forehead). Thus when the entire width of the eyebrows elevate during a question - it indicates insincerity. In this first image (during 0:48 and also somewhat less dramatically below at 0:36), Ms. McHenry is obviously being (among other things) dramatically sarcastic.

Yet a high percentage of times this nonverbal tell is seen during conversation when sincerity is being feigned and manipulation is ongoing (very often successfully).

Take hope point: When the entire width of the eyebrows elevate during a question - it's a big red flag, for at the very least it indicates insincerity - and very often deception and manipulation. The person asking already knows (or thinks they know) the answer!

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3058: Stuart Scott's ESPY Award Speech - a Common Yet Very Under-appreciated Signal of Sadness/Grief Suppression (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Stuart Scott, a father of two daughters and an ESPN sportscaster past away earlier today from appendiceal cancer.

At the 2014 ESPY Awards, Scott received the Jimmy V Award. The above video is an abbreviated version of his speech at the ESPYS (full version here).

During this seven minute video, Scott displays the nonverbal signal known as an "Inward Lip Roll" seven times (see below). The inward lip roll (ILR) is seen when we stray far from our emotional baseline and it's one of several signs of the psyche's attempt to suppress an inward crescendo as well as to prevent the outward manifestation of strong emotions. It's also seen in the context of focus physical acts. Most commonly it's seen in anger, however it's also seen in joy-happiness when trying to prevent an outbreak of laughter or smiling and thus may also be part of a duping delight body language cluster.

The ILR is also seen in the context of many other emotions. In the seven examples imaged below, Scott is trying to suppress the emotion of sadness & grief. He doesn't want to grow sadder or to begin crying. Several of these are even more dramatic examples of an ILR than is typically seen. Inward lip rolls have a very high sincerity quotient when displayed in the context of sadness-grief suppression.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2878: Prince Fielder on ESPN Cover - Nude but What Emotion? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Prince Fielder, the Texas Rangers' first baseman, appeared on the cover of ESPN today. In keeping with the sports magazine's body issue - he posed nude. Yet what emotion was on his face?

Many would misidentify his expression for a slight smile or even anger - yet it is neither. Fielder's nonverbal is contempt. There may be also an element of disgust present however the oblique angle of this image makes it impossible to discern.

How would you define the emotion of contempt (most people can't)? Remarkably, the display of contempt by your spouse/partner is the most reliable predictor of divorce/breakup. How many times in the past week did you misidentify this very telling and destructive emotion?
