Body Language Analysis No. 4102: Senator Bob Corker - Donald Trump is an Untruthful President - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) gave a speech in which he sharply criticized President Trump as well as announcing that he would not be seeking re-election in 2018.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, another Republican Senator - Bob Corker, exchanged critical twitters with the President. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a short interview of Senator Corker - wherein he spoke of the President's "... difficulty with the truth..."

SENATOR CORKER (beginning at 1:12): Unfortunately, I think, World leaders are very aware that, ahum, Ω , much of what he says is untrue.

During 1:17, just before he says, "... much of what he says is untrue...", Senator Corker:

• Pauses
• Takes a deep inhalation
• The corners of his mouth move laterally and slightly up
• His lips tighten
• The tissue beneath his lower lip bulges
• He looks down to his right
• Torques his head (twice)
• Smacks his tongue

This nonverbal cluster is classic for the thought-emotions of Regret, Resignation, Frustration, and some Sadness.

MANU RAJU (1:59): Is the President of the United States a liar?

SENATOR CORKER: The President, ah, has great difficulty with the truth ∑ (during 2:05) ...  

This expression is that of regret (not mixed with other emotions).

SENATOR CORKER: ... on many issues ∆ (during 2:07).

This expression is also that of isolated regret.

The expression immediately above (during 2:14) is that of Contempt mixed with Disgust as Senator Corker says he would not support President Trump in an election again ("Nah. No way. Nah. No way...").

Summary: In this interview on Tuesday 24 October, Senator Bob Corker spoke at length about President Trump's "great difficulty with the truth" during which he most prominently displayed feelings of Regret. He also expressed Resignation, Sadness, Frustration, Contempt, and Disgust.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3407: GOP Debate, the National Anthem and Shades of Napoleon - Body Language (PHOTO)

On Tuesday, 15 December, the republican candidates vying for their party's nomination for the 2016 U.S. Presidential election gathered in Las Vegas, Nevada in their fifth debate to date.

The above image shows Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz at the commencement for the singing of the National Anthem.

It is often speculated as to why paintings Napoleon Bonaparte often shows him with his (right) hand in his vest or jacket. While some say this was due to a chronic stomach ailment (many think he died of stomach cancer), or the relative difficulty portraitists had in painting hands - however in the 17th and 18th centuries it was a custom for men of higher sociology-economic classes to pose in such a manner. It was widely interpreted as a "manly boldness yet tempered with modesty". Thus the hand-in-vest pose was an alpha-beta hybrid of the era.

Most who know history consider Napoleon a very skilled general - but also a megalomaniac, and since so many people associate this (and similar illustrators) so strongly with Bonaparte - one would be well advised NOT to emulate him. Yet there is another reason - that is hardwired into the human brain.

Take note of Ted Cruz's hand placement INSIDE of his jacket. There is an extremely strong human instinct to be suspicious those who hide their hands. This lack of trust is particularly true at strategic/key moments.

A common variation of this behavior is inserting hands into one's pant (or jacket) pockets when a question is asked. This should raise a red flag. At the very least such behavior would indicate a significantly heightened anxiety level - and depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, it very well could indicate a lie.

Even if Cruz were outside in Bangor, Maine in January - his hand should be outside of his jacket (and with no glove) during the national anthem, pledge of allegiance - and when shaking hands.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3157: A Body Language Characteristic of Ed Miliband which makes Him Less-Likable (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 7 May 2015, the people of the United Kingdom will have their general election. The video above includes the current Prime Minister, David Cameron, participating in a recent debate with five others vying for Number 10.  What follows is a brief discussion of but one nonverbal sign which the leader of the Labour Party - Ed Miliband, displays far more frequently than the average person (or average politician).

There are many different varieties of an otherwise healthy and symmetrical mouth momentarily taking on asymmetrical configurations. The many nuances differentiating these, as well as the multitude of other body language signals with which they are clustered - can result in a good number of different meanings.

Most politicians have a significantly greater tendency to speak out of one side of their mouth when compared with most people. Those who have this lop-sided pattern will also tend to have an overall lower likability in polling and are also viewed to be less trustworthy.

Some people who speak asymmetrically do so only occasionally - while others display this body language chronically.  The more often a person's mouth moves in such a fashion - the more they also tend to be judged as insincere and of lower confidence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2086: Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon, Love and Sincerity

There are many fantastic body language displays in this interview, but one in particular is highlighted here: At the 0:37 mark in this video, just after she sees a video of her husband (Kevin Bacon) describing their first encounter and their love, Kyra Sedgwick briefly touches her sternum with her right (dominant) hand. When we further nuance her body language however, we see that she makes contact not only with her fingers - but with the palm of her hand as well. This "palmar touch" indicates a much greater level of sincerity.

When anyone touches with just the fingers/finger tips (such as often seen in business, sales, the courtroom and in personal relationships) - this indicates insincerity. Such a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier) display would not indicate the person as a whole was insincere, but it would mean in that moment, they were not feeling full commitment and/or not being entirely honest (unless of course we see such nonverbals displayed chronically). 

Touching over the upper left chest or over the sternum, particularly with one's dominant hand indicates even higher levels of the "Heart-Felt" emotions of love and affection.
