Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2552: Tom Hanks, the Real Captain Phillips and Recalling the Emotion of Fear (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

As with most all interviews, this one is loaded with body language. It features Tom Hanks speaking about his new movie "Captain Phillips" as well as the Real Captain Richard Phillips - about whose story and heroics regarding his 2009 capture of his ship (MV Maersk Alabama) and crew by Somali pirates the movie was made. What follows is an excellent example of one classic expression.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

At the 1:36 Captain Phillips displays a partial expression of fear (captured in the images here - both taken less than one second apart).

In this unilateral tightening and lateral-downward pulling of one corner (his left) of the mouth, we see a partial mouth expression of fear. Note how his lower teeth are exposed particularly in this first image. We are not at the right angle to visualize his neck, but if we were - we'd also see a tightening of his neck muscle on that same side. His left nostril is also flared - also part of the fear face. However notice that we do not see the eye expression of fear - this lack of eye findings signifies a lower level of fear, a "social etiquette fear face" or as it does in this example - a diminution of the emotion.

The fear has had a lot of time to fade - it has been 4 years. In addition the multiple retelling of the story has also engendered a lessening of the emotion. Had this interview been in the days or weeks just after the piracy, we would have seen a more full expression.

Hats off to Captain Phillips and Tom Hanks - one real hero and a fantastic actor.
