Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2905: Paul George's Injury - a Common Body Language Signal of Emotional Processing (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last night, in an exhibition/scrimmage game as a member of USA basketball, Paul George suffered an open fracture of his right tibia and fibula (An open fracture is one in which the bone is exposed - with the bone through the skin or a wound penetrating down to a bone - and is sometimes referred to by the largely antiquated term "compound fracture". This finding increases the risk of infection. Mr. George's fracture involved the two bones his right lower leg). Very fortunately form him and consistent with a good prognosis, the initial evaluations show that his knee and ankle were uninvolved (video below).

Paul George is shown here in what is a very common body language configuration seen after injury. Paul's eyes are closed, his hands are clasped together over his mouth, and his elbows are directed out - away from his torso - with his armpits exposed. Had his upper arms been positioned close to his chest, it would indicate a more beta emotional tone. Arms held out in this fashion show us that Mr. George is trying to dial up his alpha - essentially summoning the courage he needs in this moment (while his teammates are significantly more beta - and in mindsets of empathy).

Yet, his eyes are closed and his hands are loosely clasped over his mouth. These nonverbals show us his competing beta emotions - anxiety and a lower confidence level while trying to emotionally process the events.

In summary, Paul George's intellectual brain knows what has happened and is reviewing the possible ramifications. However his emotional brain is trying to catch up to what his intellect already knows. In this moment, the Indiana Pacer is successfully up-regulating his alpha emotions and summoning his courage.
