Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3792: Notre Dame's Matt Farrell and Family Surprised by Brother Bo's Military Homecoming at Basketball Game - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bo Farrell surprised his brother Matt (along with other family members) during a Notre Dame vs. Colgate basketball game on Monday. Serving in the U.S. Army, Bo was deployed in Afghanistan and returned a few months early. Such surprise homecomings are of course packed with nonverbal teaching-moments, one of which is discussed here.

Note that when they are hugging, both the Bo and Matt Farrell's eyelids are closed.

Ninety percent of human sensory input arrives via the visual system. The other four senses - auditory, tactile, taste and olfactory are obligated to "share" the other ten percent. Moreover, forty percent of the mass of the human brain is committed to vision. Therefore when the eyes are closed, a temporary and slight increase in blood flow occurs as well as an enhancement of neural-electrical activity with the four non-visual senses. This temporary change also happens in both cognitive and emotional portions of the brain.

Therefore when a person closes their eyes during a sincere hug (or other forms of affection) their psyches are very much striving to get every bit of emotion out of that moment and interaction. This doesn't occur in non-affectionate hugging (An exception to this may occur when, on occasion, another emotion supersedes that of affection - typically the embarrassment of a public setting or the preoccupation with another pressing matter. However when open-eyed hugs become a consistent pattern - a diminishing of affection has taken place.)

This same sensory enhancement phenomenon holds true for the other senses too. When you close your eyes while eating a favorite dessert, it's not just your imagination it pleasing your palate more - it truly does taste better - because that portion of your brain is functioning a bit more efficiently. This physiology dynamic also applies during smelling, hearing and touching.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3791: Russian Ambassador to Turkey Assassinated in Ankara - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Andrey Karlov (the Russian Ambassador to Turkey) was assassinated during an art exhibition in Ankara. As there were professional photographers and videographers present, multiple images were captured in addition to video documenting the killing and its aftermath.

In this image taken immediately after the shooting, Mevlut Mert Altintas (the assassin) can be seen. Although it can't be seen in this cropped photo, he is standing adjacent to the body of Ambassador Karlov. Altintas was reportedly a 22 year-old off duty (or possibly former) Turkish police officer at the time of the attack.

Note the expression on Altintas' face in the above photograph. Although there is anger present - it's his secondary feeling. The dominant emotion being experienced and thus projected is that of Contempt. On the faces of those committing terrorist acts, the expressions of contempt and/or disgust are present virtually 100% of the time.

In this second, distorted image, taken a few moments before the shooting, the Assassin can be seen. Here there is also contempt being displayed (on the mid-face and mouth) - although here it is being considerably suppressed.

The configuration of his hands is a portion of, and variation of what some law enforcement personnel call "Parade Rest" (and some military, yet the hands tend to be held behind the back in most militaries). Yet if we slice this nonverbal moment even thinner and evaluate the position of his thumbs and correlate this with the indirect gaze of his eyes (along with his previously noted contempt) - we can further conclude this body language cluster is highly consistent with a significantly heightened level of anxiety as well as clandestine planning.

Furthermore, although his feet cannot be seen directly, when we look at the angle of the assassin's legs, it's obvious that they are planted further than his shoulder's width apart. Such a leg-angle/foot-distance display is considerably hyper-alpha and projects the mental state of a person preparing for an intense physical act.

My condolences and prayers to the family of Ambassador Karlov.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3790: Senator John McCain Believes Russian Election Interference Could 'Destroy Democracy' - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence - (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Whenever performing Body Language Analysis, it's imperative that medical etiologies are not mistaken for Nonverbal causes.

In above video segment Senator John McCain is discussing Vladimir Putin and Russia's interference in the United States electoral process.

You may notice the left side of Senator McCain's face is moderately hypo-reactive relative to his right side (this image was captured during 0:58). This is most noticeable when comparing the right vs. left forehead as well as when contrasting the dynamics of the corners of McCain's mouth. This facial asymmetry is caused by a medical condition - a "Peripheral Facial Nerve Palsy" - which, in McCain's case is longstanding (one common sub-type of this condition is known as "Bell's Palsy").

Many nonverbal novices may (very falsely) interpret those with facial nerve palsies as projecting (and thus feeling) the emotion of contempt. That's not to say that individuals who are suffering from facial nerve palsies don't occasionally feel contempt - of course they do. But sussing out the distinctions between medical causes and nonverbal behavior is profoundly important. Knowing these details can make all the difference in the World.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3789: Felicity Jones, Jyn Erso and Tattoos - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Felicity Jones was recently a guest on The Graham Norton Show promoting Rogue One. Mr. Norton encouraged Ms. Jones to go into some detail regarding a fan who had a likeness of Jyn Erso (her Star Wars character) tattooed on his calf. Felicity found it to be quite embarrassing when Graham insinuated another body part.

When a person blushes due to embarrassment, a good percentage of the time, they will cover a portion of their face (typically their mouth and/or eyes).

It's not uncommon this will progress further to involve greater portions of the face, head and body. This covering behavior can thus be thought of as an embarrassment amplifier.

In this moment, Jones temporarily covers herself behind Dawn French.

It follows then, that when a person displays facial or body covering during embarrassment, there is always blushing present (yet the reverse, of course, is not always true).

Those individuals who blush, as well as those who display facial-body covering during embarrassment blushing, will tend to have higher overall sincerity (higher sincerity quotients) - not just for that moment - but as a long term personality characteristic.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3788: President Obama's Press Conference - "Not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin" - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today President Obama gave his last press conference of the year (and the longest of his presidency). Not surprisingly, a good share of the questions revolved around the subject of the US Presidential Election, Russian hacking and Vladimir Putin.

One particular high point of the conference and it's accompanying set of body language behaviors is highlighted here.

Beginning at 58:25, President Obama says, "... But I'd, I make a larger point which is - Not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin ....". Just after saying this, during 58:31 Barack Obama displays a bilateral "Eyebrow Shrug" along with a bilateral "Thumb Shrug". Notice his shoulders barely moved - but this is none-the-less a shrug. Both of his thumbs point upward along with an elevation of his eyebrows and an upward contraction of his forehead muscles. He also extends his neck forward while turning it slightly to his left - as well as displaying an extended blink (a form of a pseudo-blink).

President Obama repeats this display again during 58:34 - only this time he rotates his head to his right and pseudo-blink display is partial.

This nonverbal cluster is a classic display indicating the thought-emotion: "Isn't it obvious?" / "Isn't it common knowledge?" / "What other conclusion is possible?".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3787: Meghan Markle's Body Language - and some Ramifications for Prince Harry - Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Many know Meghan Markle via her character Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits. Others have come to be aware of her as she has been romantically linked with Prince Harry for the past several months. Yet you may not know the actor has also worked as an advocate with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.

From a body language perspective Ms. Markle exemplifies many teaching moments within the speech included in the video above - yet one is particularly well displayed.

Meghan Markle blushes very easily - and although this is seen on her face, it's particularly noticeable on her upper chest and neck.

Although blushing can be seen with anger - it's more typically associated with embarrassment and romance. Blushing is associated with increased trustworthiness and greater generosity. Many would describe people who blush more often as possessing an endearing vulnerability. Those who are "blushers" also have a higher level of sincerity.

Blushing acts as one type of social lubricant as well as a very effective nonverbal de-escalator - a behavior which naturally decreases the aggression in others.

Blushing is unique to humans. And while women have a higher incidence of blushing than men, Prince Harry may be interested in knowing another reason those who easily blush make better romantic partners - they have higher rates of monogamy.

P.S. Please invite me to the Wedding

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3786: Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte admits he personally carried out extrajudicial killings - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this video from Tuesday 13 December 2016, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte told an audience in Manila, (beginning at 0:28), "But in Davao I used to - do it personally - just to show to the - guys that - 'If I can do it, why can't you?' "

Duterte then added (in Tagalog), "I was really looking for an encounter, so that I could kill."

Note that during 0:29 - 0:30, President Duterte displays what is termed an "Exaggerated Pout". The exaggerated pout signals that rationalization and justification are transpiring - and those who make this expression are looking for others to co-rationalize and justify their decision/actions along with them. It's also a signal that at least at a deeper level, they were in conflict - and/or they know their actions/decisions will be harshly judged by some - however they've pushed past their psychological barriers and are now looking for others to jump on board.

It's helpful to think of the exaggerated pout as saying, "Isn't it obvious?" or "This is clear to everyone, right?" - or in this example more specifically, "Anyone can see these people needed to be killed - we don't need no stinking trials or judges, right?"

Summary: The Exaggerated Pout indicates active attempts at rationalizing and justifying - and those making this expression want others to agree with them.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3785: Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson "Edge of Seventeen" - Behavioral Contagions, Mirroring and Laughing - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

One example of Nonverbal Behavior which is both interesting and joyful - is that the mere act of watching others laughing has a strong tendency to make us laugh as well. Thus laughing is one example of a "Behavioral Contagion" as well as type of "Mirroring". This phenomenon of "catching laughter" is true even if we don't find the subject about which they're laughing particularly funny, if we don't know what they are laughing about - or even if we don't speak their language.

It's not too surprising that laughter is more common with family and friends vs. acquaintances or those people whom we haven't met. Of course the vast majority of those watching this video don't know Hailee Steinfeld or Woody Harrelson - although we may some affinity for them through their acting (or Ms. Steinfeld via her music). If you have a particular foreknowledge or fondness for one or both of these actors - you'll most likely find it easier to laugh with them in the "blooper" section of the above video (1:19 - 1:49) from their recently released film, Edge of Seventeen.

It's also true that when we see another person suppressing laughter - it further "primes" our brain to mirror their behavior and engenders the odds of us crescendoing into a deep laughter. Although we laugh 30 times more frequently when we're in the presence of others, comedians often use this technique of maintaining an expression of a barely-contained laughter as a catalyst to make their audiences' belly-laugh more easily. You can even practice this on yourself as a spontaneous mood elevator or in the presence of others whenever your instinct tells you that laughter may act as a social lubricant (which is of course, very often).

Think of a particular comedian or funny film scene which has this effect on you. Watching the performance several times so that you can recall it easily will allow you to access the memory and re-create the scene (and thus also the true emotions) in your psyche. This is a variation on the Stanislavski method. Of course you probably can recall several movie scenes which has this enjoyable emotional trigger for you - and after watch Harrelson and Steinfeld you may now have another scene to add to your collection (especially since you now know some of the backstory).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3784: Donald Trump on Daily Intelligence Briefings - "You Know I'm like a Smart Person" - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump was interviewed on Fox News Sunday over the weekend. A portion of that interview is included within the video above - and two variations of a crucial nonverbal expression are discussed below.

Mr. Trump has come under sharp criticism for his diminished frequency of his daily intelligence briefings. Understandably, such important, frequent and detailed information has always been regarded with very high priority by all past presidents and presidents-elect.

Beginning at 5:28, Chris Wallace says: I just want to ask you about your skepticism about the intelligence community. You are getting the Presidential Daily Brief -

Trump: Yes

Wallace: - only once a week

Trump:  Well, I, I, get it when I need it

Wallace: But is it, if there's skepticism  ...

Trump: [over-talking] Well, I get it when I need it [decrescendoing volume]. First of all - these are very good people - that are giving me the briefings - and I say, 'If something should change from this point - immediately call me". I'm available on one minute's notice. I don't have to be told - you know, I'm like a smart person. I don't have to be told the same thing - the same words every single day - for the next EIGHT years.

During 5:48, as President-Elect Trump says, "... immediately ...", he displays a classic microexpression of contempt (mixed with a secondary component of disgust).

Mr. Trump's eyelid closure, although not a required component for either contempt or disgust, amplifies both of these emotions.

A few seconds later during 5:56, as Mr. Trump says, "... I don't have to be told the same thing ...", he displays another example of a primary contempt-secondary disgust microexpression.

Summary: It's not here fully discernible for whom the President Elect feels contempt and disgust (e.g., possibly Chris Wallace, possibly some members of the US intelligence community, members of congress, etc.,) - however during this segment wherein the subject of his skipping daily intelligence briefings is discussed, Donald Trump displays significant levels of both these emotions - and he directs them at (some of) his critics.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3783: John McCain on CIA's assessment of Russia's Tampering in US Presidential Election - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Senator John McCain was a guest on Face The Nation this morning. McCain was the 2008 Republican Candidate for President. He also sits on the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs - as well as the Armed Services Committee. Senator McCain is a Navy veteran and former prisoner of war (held for 5.5 years in North Vietnam). Both his father and his grandfather were four-star Admirals.

McCain has said that it's clear that the Russian government interfered with the 2016 US Presidential election and there should be a formal, thorough, bipartisan investigation.

There were multiple nonverbal signals of interest contained in this short video clip - but one in particular is highlighted here.

Beginning at 0:19, Senator McCain continues, "... But [deep inhalation] facts are stubborn things. They, did, hack, into, this campaign and ..."

As he says, "... But facts are stubborn things ... " (0:21 - 0:23), John McCain displays what is known as a "Self-Righteous Head Wiggle" (SRHW).

Although in common speech, the term "Self-Righteous" has a derogatory bent to it, in this context its usage does not necessarily imply arrogance (although that emotion can co-exist), rather it connotes a high degree of confidence.

A Self-Righteous Head Wiggle is characterized by a quick, side-to-side movement of the head & neck which is relatively high in frequency and usually mild-to-moderate in amplitude. Although not always, Self-Righteous Head Wiggles often occur in clusters - punctuating throughout a conversation or statement. It's made by people who are most commonly relative authorities or alpha personalities within the group. Thus a SRHW is seen in the context of significant confidence with accompanying self-assured emotional vocal tones.

A self-righteous head wiggle may be very brief (e.g., a microexpression or near-microexpression) - or more typically, it lasts several seconds (as is seen here).

It's imperative to note that a Self-Righteous Head Wiggle can only be accurately assessed in the dynamic context of a real-time event or video - not via still images (please watch video).

Another important feature with a SRHW is that, although the primary movement vector is a side-to-side wiggle, there's often an additional, simultaneous, backward moving component (as McCain exemplifies here). When seen (more common with larger audiences), this added backward motions may demonstrate another layer of emotional content - that of Incredulity (McCain is in disbelief that others don't agree with the CIA's analysis). Disgust and/or contempt nonverbal signals can also be seen with such additional backward motion, although neither is present with this example.

When a forward movement is present (also not seen in this particular example) - there's often coexisting nonverbal signals of arrogance and condescending emotions (and in such cases the audiences are typically smaller in number [even one-on-one conversations] and with subordinates rather than peers or superiors).

Another commonly seen feature of a SRHW is an increase in volume, pitch (vocal frequency) and speaking speed - occurring simultaneously with (or nearly simultaneous) the SRHW. McCain does display all of these features.

Similar analogous movements often occur involving the jaw, torso and even the entire body. In this example McCain's torso pulls backward, but has no significant side-to-side motion.

Another common phenomenon of the self-righteous head wiggle is that it's more commonly seen in settings where hierarchical structure is the prominent (as opposed to flat organizations).

Summary: Senator John McCain has a very high degree of confidence that the CIA's analysis of Russian hacking into the 2016 US Presidential Election is indeed accurate. He also has a significant level of disbelief that others don't agree with the CIA's analysis. Senator McCain views Russia's action as a serious threat against the United States.
