Body Language Analysis No. 4241: Vladimir Putin responding to a question regarding the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

BBC Journalist, Steve Rosenberg recently asked Russian President Vladimir Putin, "Is Russia behind the poisoning of Sergei Skripal?" What follows is a partial analysis of President Putin's nonverbal response.

The above image of Vladimir Putin (from 0:02 in the above video) shows the Russian President with an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction - simultaneous with a partial (mild/subtle) mouth smile.

This is an expression every healthy and psychologically normal person displays (just not very often). It's significant for the emotions of:

• Arrogance (we're all allowed to feel arrogant once in a while, but hopefully not too often)
• Contempt (again, on occasion we all feel contempt, but hopefully it's a rare experience)
• Disbelief (more specifically, a Smug-Disbelief with Impatient-Dismissal)

It's crucial to point out, that the emotions of arrogance, contempt, and disbelief all may be conveyed by other facial configurations. 

However, a relatively small fraction of the population (approximately 4%) displays this expression frequently - those individuals with a combination of:

• Low (or nonexistent) Empathy

combined with

• Low Sincerity Quotients (e.g., those individuals who are not necessarily lying IN THAT MOMENT - but they have a strong tendency toward deception

People with low Empathy Quotients combined with low or absent Sincerity - are characteristics common to Sociopaths/Psychopathy (Antisocial Personality Disorder [APD]).

This particular facial expression - an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction with a simultaneous Mild Mouth Smile (often partially suppressed) -WHEN DISPLAYED CHRONICALLY - has an extremely high correlation with Sociopathy/Psychopathy/Antisocial Personality Disorder.

This is one of President Putin's default facial expressions - essentially it's a Living Mask.

A moment later in this same video, President Putin displayed both Disgust and Contempt. This is a remarkably telling moment - for these were his real feelings, which leaked through his mask.

A Very similar phenomenon occurs when actors come out of character: Actors were pretending - but once they stop acting, their real emotions are suddenly exposed - and for a brief moment, these released emotions are often hyperbolic (and can't be masked).

When the emotions of Contempt, Disgust, and/or Anger are temporally juxtaposed (as we see here) with the Elevated Central Forehead Contraction/Partial Mouth Smile Expression - a profoundly Dangerous Red Flag has been raised. You're in Danger.

Summary: President Vladimir Putin's CHRONIC display (a living mask) of the specific facial expression of an elevated central forehead contraction with a partial/subtle mouth smile (first image, above) has an extremely high correlation with low (or absent) empathy combined with low (or absent) sincerity (chronic deceptive tendencies) - as well as a very high likelihood of Sociopathy/Psychopathy/Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Body Language Analysis No. 4051: Predicting Kim Jong-un's Behavior - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Yesterday North Korea exploded, what many believe, was their first hydrogen bomb (aka Thermonuclear weapon). Only five other countries possess hydrogen weapons - China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Hydrogen bombs are based on fusion (chain-reactions of hydrogen atoms joining together to form helium atoms, under very high temperatures and pressures - the process whereby our Sun [and all stars] produce energy). Fusion weapons are profoundly more powerful compared with fission weapons (the splitting of larger atoms [e.g., Uranium-235 and Plutonium-239] to release energy). Nuclear weapons based on fusion technology are also smaller and lighter - thus allowing for increased range of the ICBM and/or greater destructive power.

Virtually all other countries, including the Chinese and Russians, believe Kim Jong-un's rapid, offensive build-up of nuclear weapons is deliberately unjustified and destabilizing. And yet, North Korea is now a nuclear power. Thus it's profoundly important for any other head-of-state to be able to accurately predict his behavior.

Kim Jong-un has a deep desire to be seen by other World leaders - and the other 7.5 billion of us - constantly surrounded by subordinates. He very much wants to viewed as intelligent, wise, and powerful - with his underlings constantly writing his words, recording his wisdom, and taking his orders. From a nonverbal perspective, these other men can be thought of as extensions of himself. They are momentarily his surrogate arms, hands, face, and body. But rather than a gorilla beating its chest, a peacock spreading its feathers, or a rattlesnake shaking its tail - they are substitutes. They are temporary analogs. This repetitive and very public behavior is particularly highly correlated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

It's important to make the distinction, however, that these men are but evanescent plumage. As Kim Jong-un has frequently demonstrated - to him, the North Korean people are very much disposable - objects to be used, killed, and replaced. This behavior and world-view correlates with strongly with both Psychopathy and Machiavellianism.

Summary: Narcissists, particularly malignant narcissists, very often manipulate other people (indirectly or directly) using them as temporary, surrogate nonverbal expressions - in effect, extensions of their own bodies' - illustrating their own emotions'.

While we, of course, cannot conduct a formal psychological evaluation on Kim Jong-un - what we can view of his long-term behavior strongly correlates with Narcissism, Psychopathy, and Machiavellianism - the Dark Triad.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3129: Robert Durst, HBO's "The Jinx" and Body Language (PHOTO)

In the fascinating investigative-documentary (seven years in the making), "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst", Andrew Jarecki directs, produces and some have said has created a new genre in the recently released HBO series.

Robert Durst, son of a New York City real estate mogul - Seymour Durst, was arrested on 14 March for the alleged murder of his friend, Susan Berman. She was killed in December of 2000 - and many believe she had knowledge of the disappearance of Kathleen ("Kathie") McCormack Durst - Robert Durst's first wife. Robert Durst also was acquitted in the murder of Mr. Morris Black where he claimed self-defense and yet admitted to dismembering his body and dumping it in Galveston Bay.

Mr. Durst is highly intelligent (he is known to have Asperger Syndrome) and most consider him highly eccentric. 

The expression captured in the image above is notable for a significant nonverbal message. Note Durst's lips. They are configured in what is known as a "Loose Forward Lip Purse" - for which this is a subtle example (As the name implies - there are tight varieties and lateral [sideways] types of lip purses as well - which have added and different meanings). Durst made this expression a number of times during his interviews for "The Jinx". It's highly characteristic of clandestine disagreement and/or a clandestine plan. Those who make this nonverbal signal may express a slight verbal disagreement (or often none at all), yet they are feeling dramatic dissent. Forward lip purses are only made by those who feel they are in some or all ways superior to those to whom they're speaking. This body language sign of an alpha mindset (directed towards a perceived beta person) - is often part of their secret. They want to keep their advantage hidden. It's also highly characteristic for them believe they have a significant chance of success in both implementing and ultimate success of their plan. For those who believe Robert Durst is guilty of one, two or three murders, this expression will now make perfect sense.

We all display this facial expression on occasion - however those who display a loose forward lip purse chronically will often suffer from Machiavellianism, Narcissism and/or Psychopathy (the Dark Triad).
