Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3556: Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo Calls Donald Trump "Stupid" While Meeting With London Mayor Sadiq Khan - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

On Tuesday the New Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, met the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. The subject of Donald Trump was raised by a member of the press. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this encounter.

The interviewer begins, "Donald Trump says that obviously he would ban Muslims, but he says he'd make an exception for Sadiq Khan ..."

As he says, "... exception ...", a very good example of an overt macroexpression of contempt is displayed by Sadiq Khan.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says, "... Mr. Trump is so stupid [disgust display] My God, My God."

This expression of disgust is displayed just as she finishes saying, "... stupid ..."
 

This facial signal of disgust continues throughout the rest of her sentence as she rotates to her right.

It's important to note this turning away is disgust amplifier.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2586: Harrison Ford in "Ender's Game" - Microexpression and Macroexpression of Regret - Harrison's Brand and the Stanislavski Method (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the new sci-fi film, "Ender's Game" (from the book of the same name by Orson Scott Card), Harrison Ford plays Colonel Graff. Within the video above, a clip from the movie shows Ford's character speaking with Mazer Rackham (played by Ben Kingsley). At the 0:41 mark the segment begins -

Graff: "He's not ready."

Rackham: "You're never ready".

At the 0:54 second mark (within the first syllable of the word, "... never ..."), Ford displays a Microexpression of Regret (some may confuse this with either microexpressions of duping delight or even contempt - don't fall into this mistake). This is superimposed on top of a subtle Macroexpression of Regret.

Regret is one of Ford's best facial expressions (both its micro and macro versions) - and as an actor, he plays this emotion much better than most. One may even say, "Regret is Harrison Ford's brand".  The probable reason for his ability to do this is his recreation of this specific emotion using the Stanislavski Method. Without Stanislavski's help, he would not only not be able to routinely and accurately reproduce this nonverbal facial signal - but primarily and just as importantly the emotion beneath it as well.

Here Ford experiences the emotion first - and the body language is secondarily manifested.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 1515: White House Press Secretary Jay Carney's Numerous Microexpressions and Subtle Displays of Contempt

In this video segment, Jay Carney, the current White House Press Secretary, displays numerous signals of contempt during the answering of Norah O'Donnell's and Ed Henry's questions. Multiple macroexpressions and microexpressions are exampled here (most notably, but not limited to the following time-marks: 0:11, 0:14, 0:22, 0:26, 1:00, 1:34, 1:39, 1:48-1:52, 1:58, 2:13-2:18, 2:57, 2:59, 3:11, 3:48). He is defending the context in which the President used the word "unprecedented" when referring to the chances of the Supreme Court over-turning his Health Care Reform Law. 

Carney makes multiple (verbal) statements consistent with the emotion of contempt, (e.g.: Well, only because a handful of people didn't seem to understand what he was referring to. Of course, he was referring to the fact that it would be unprecedented in the modern era of the Supreme Court, ....", "...That's not what he said, Ed. That's not certainly what he meant. And it was clear to most folks who observe this and understand what is at issue here...", "...Well, it may not be evident to you. It is clear that the President was talking about matters like this that involve the Commerce Clause ..." and several other examples), so his multiple body language displays are entirely expected - if you know what and where to look. Said another way, Carney's verbals and nonverbals are highly congruent in this video. Being a White House Press Secretary is not an easy job. If you held such an important position, would you have a better poker face than Mr. Carney?

In common parlance, the facial expression for contempt resembles a unilateral "snarl". The vast majority of Mr. Carney's contempt is displayed on his left. Most people subconscious is also unilaterally biased.  The lip elevates and the nostril on the same side will flare as the contempt grows less suppressed. There is a tightening and elevation of the "mustache area" as well as a partial closure of the eyelids. The ipsilateral eyebrow is often lowered along with accentuated nasal labial furrow and furrowing of the bridge of the nose. All of these may not be present unless the contempt is extreme. The video example here includes many partial and subtle displays.

In many other settings, where there are not any obvious or even subtle spoken signals of dispute, we often will still see contempt (and other negative emotions) displayed - and therein lies the extreme value of knowing how to interpret others' body language - and project our own in many a varied context. Miss it, dismiss it, or gloss over it at your own risk.

Negotiation Body Language Analysis # 991: Australia's Aboriginal Angst and Julia Gillard's Hands

Australia Day, 26 January, marked the 224th anniversary of the arrival of the first fleet of British colonies to disembark in the land down-under.

Australia's Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and the Leader of the Opposition, Tony Abbott, and many others were at an award ceremony yesterday, in relative close proximity to the longstanding "Tent Embassy" of indigenous-rights supporters (which itself was celebrating an anniversary - it's 40th - on Thursday as well). Chaotic protest and some violence ensued as the two ideologies clashed - although it certainly could have been much worse. What follows is a brief analysis of some of Ms. Gillard's body language.

At the 1:49 - 2:01 segment of this video, when Ms. Gillard's security expresses his concern to the PM, Julia shows us a high-anxiety/low confidence MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor or Pacifier - See another MAP example in Secret # 199: When a Lie is Told, Heard or Visualized ... by Vladimir's Eye) of interlaced fingers and arms held close to her lower chest. As the concern for increased violence crescendos, so do nonverbal indicators of anxiety. Gillard's classic nonverbal signal of the wringing her right hand with her left, exemplifies this nicely (from 2:13 - 2:19).

Earlier today, when the Prime Minister was asked about the incident, she showed two brief expressions of genuine empathy for those deserving of the planned awards, as the ceremony was disrupted and those to be honored were not fully recognized. Ms. Gillard's central forehead contracted briefly - indicating emotional-pain-empathy, with a microexpression at the 3:15 mark (very evanescent) and a macroexpression of the same from 3:17 - 3:19.

It is rare to see Heads-of-State in a potentially violent situation. Yet this reminds us how emotions are constantly displayed and readily available for others to use or abuse. The vast majority of people are completely unaware of just how much information they transmit. Their face and body are open books - constantly on exhibit for others to read.
