Body Language Analysis No. 4202: Saoirse Ronan, Ed Sheeran, and Galway Girl (Galway Grill) - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Saoirse Ronan was recently a guest on The Graham Norton Show. You may recognize her from her role as Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson in the 2017 film, Lady Bird, for which she has been nominated for a Best Actress Oscar.

In the clip above, she describes her appearance in Ed Sheeran's video, Galway Girl. Moreover, she also told the story of a Sheeran-directed deliberate misspelling of a Tattoo (Galway Grill, rather than Galway Girl) - in her handwriting - on Ed Sheeran's arm.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a key moment of this video. 

SAOIRSE RONAN (continuing at 1:14): ... No, I was very, very nervous about it - so I practiced for about half an hour before they actually tattooed it onto him

DEBRA MESSING: And that's what you came up with?

Immediately Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Rob Beckett, Graham Norton, and much of the audience all laughed at Saoirse Ronan.

Verbally, Ms. Ronan took this teasing fairly well in stride - yet her nonverbal displays told a considerably different story.

During 1:22, we can see Saoirse's eyebrows pull downward, her lower eyelids tighten, her nostrils flare, the region between her nose and her upper lip contract - comprising a nonverbal cluster display indicating anger.

During 1:28, Ms. Ronan is scratching her nose. There's no doubt she felt a true itch - however, this was elicited by the anxiety of being laughed at - on stage - in front of millions. It's is completely within context/normal.

Yet, the finger she (subconsciously) chose to itch her nose with - was her right middle finger. This was not by accident. She was very much thinking F- you! - and nonverbally this thought-emotion also manifested in this example of a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

It's called Partial - because it's not shown in the typical, very conscious/deliberate, full-frontal display.

It's termed Emblematic - because the middle finger display is one example of a nonverbal emblem - universally recognized for its meaning.

It's called a Slip - for it's not consciously displayed - but leaks out of one's psyche - into a physical act.

Of course, there are other partial emblematic slips which have nothing to do with the middle finger or profanity - but this is, perhaps, the most well-known and often-cited example.

Summary: Despite being an extremely accomplished and skilled actor, when Saoirse is just being Saoirse - and not in-character - she momentarily and nonverbally lapses - and, for those who know what signs to look for - let her anger show.

Body Language Analysis No. 4074: Donald Trump Sends Robert Kraft a Message - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, President Trump offered up a message to his friend, Robert Kraft - New England Patriots owner. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this brief interview - and how Trump feels the NFL is responding to his idea that any players who don't stand for the National Anthem should be fired.


PRESIDENT TRUMP [beginning at 0:00]: I watched a little bit and I will say that there was tremendous solidarity for our flag and for our country.

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, your friend, Robert Kraft, said he was, "disappointed by what you said on Friday [inaudible]"

PRESIDENT TRUMP [over-talking]: Well that's okay. Look, he's gotta take his - he ah, he has to take his ideas and go with what he wants. I think it's very disrespectful to our country. I think it's very, very disrespectful to our flag. I like Bob very much - he's my friend. But - he gave me a Superbowl ring ago, right? So he's a f-, good friend of mine. But - ah,  and I want him to do what he wants to do, but - ...


During 0:18 - 0:19, President Trump moves his right middle finger from just above his right eye - posteriorly along his temple region as he says, "... to our country. I think ...". This is a classic example of what is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip" - of which there are many varieties. To be blunt, Donald Trump - subconsciously - told Robert Kraft to "Fuck Off".

The "Partial" nomenclature is used here because the illustrator is not displayed in it's full-fledged, upright, held-high, in-front of one's body manner. Rather it's a horizontal, off to the side, and atypical display.

The term "Emblematic" is applied here due to the "Middle Finger" gesture (illustrator) is a meaning which is well-defined and near-universally recognized. In the nonverbal world, such symbols are known as "Emblems".

The "Slip" description tells us the subconscious nature with which this action is initiated. Occasionally, its user becomes conscious of this dynamic (or has an edge-of-consciousness awareness of it) once it's completed/nearly complete.

Now go back a few seconds and notice that during 0:13 - 0:14, upon hearing a question about Robert Kraft, President Trump then steps backward. This is a fantastic example of the nonverbal display of being "taken aback" - which signals the phenomenon of emotional processing. Notice also during this moment, the President stutters and takes longer to respond as he says, "... Look, he's gotta take his - he ah, he has to take his ideas ...". This is a strong indicator that he has strong feelings with regards to his relationship with Robert Kraft. Donald Trump's middle finger display 4-5 seconds later shows us his true feelings for the New England Patriots owner.

It's also important to note that Donald Trump rarely touches his face/neck/head while speaking - particularly on camera (much less so than most politicians or professional actors). Thus when he does occasionally commits such a faux pas - we can be sure his action is driven by strong emotions (which over-ride his normal suppression for facial touching).

Summary: Donald Trump flipped-off Patriots owner Robert Kraft yesterday. This subconsciously initiated nonverbal action was most likely driven by his feelings of being betrayed by Kraft. Along with 30 of the 32 NFL owners, Kraft openly and publicly addressed his disappointment in the President's recent comments.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3837: Donald Trump's Contentious Phone Call with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, Shinzō Abe and François Hollande last Saturday. Yet the new American President spoke with Malcolm Turnbull, he told the Australia Prime Minister, “this was the worst call by far.” The phone conversation was supposed to last one hour, however Trump ended it abruptly after only 25 minutes. Trump's antagonism was reportedly related to an agreement the Obama administration had made with the Australian government to take 1,250 refugees whom are currently in an Aussie detention center. He clearly does not want to do this.

President Trump, who had just signed an executive order earlier that day temporarily barring the admission of refugees into the US, told the Australian PM he was, “going to get killed” politically and then accused Turnbull of wanting to export to the US, the “next Boston bombers.”

All of the images captured in this post were taken during that specific phone call between Donald Trump and Malcolm Turnbull. The reason for the hazy resolution is primarily because the photographers and videographers were standing outside and filming through the windows of the Oval Office. Reflections can be readily seen against the navy blue of Trump's suit jacket.  

Although no recordings - or word-for-word transcripts are available (rather only snippets of phrases), it has been reported by multiple news agencies, both Australian and American, that Trump's tone and words were hostile.

Whenever assessing another person's real-time thought-emotions or predicting their future behavior - we should always take into account several key variables:

1. History of past behavior of the individual in question
2. Their precise words used
3. The accompanying vocal qualities
4. Their Nonverbal Behavior

In this post, we will focus on the fourth factor - Trump's Body Language. In each of these images we see an excellent example of what is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip (There are many nonverbal signals which may be manifested via a partial emblematic slip, but this is perhaps the most infamous).

Did you notice the President has his middle finger extended in each of these moments?

Let's break down the term: Partial Emblematic Slip

An Emblem is a nonverbal signal, most commonly conveyed with the hands - yet it may be performed with any part of the body, signaling a well-accepted and specific meaning in within a geographic region or subculture. The emotion projected via an extended middle finger (most commonly with the back of the hand facing away from its displayer) is indeed understood in virtually every culture around the World (and thus is essentially referred to as "Universal").

It is called Partial because the Emblem is not displayed in its typical, conscious full-fledged manner - but rather moderately extended. In addition, it's also conveyed in a nontraditional location - here, extended on the face during a phone call.

The word Slip is included, because it's nearly always subconsciously performed. Although occasionally people will disguise this insult deliberately, Trump almost surely did not know he was displaying this body language signal.

Conclusion: We can have high confidence in the reports of just how hostile and vitriolic President Trump was toward Malcolm Turnbull during their phone call last weekend. Indeed, Trump was truly flipping-off his Aussie counterpart.
