Body Language Analysis No. 4340: Ruby Rose gets Emotional regarding her new Role as Batwoman - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 7 August 2018, the CW network announced they are casting Ruby Rose as Batwoman (whose alter ego is fictional character Kate Kane). It's a role she has dreamed of acting since childhood. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Rose received harsh criticism which asserted "wasn't lesbian enough", "wasn't Jewish" (in the comic series, Kane's character is Jewish), and "lacked the acting skills" to play Batwoman. Yet, Ruby Rose came out as lesbian when she was twelve years old. Ms. Rose has quit Twitter following this backlash.

The day after CW's Batwoman series announcement, Ruby Rose was a guest on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show.

One particular nonverbal display during this interview is worthy of a closer look.

At 1:21 in the above video, Ruby Rose briefly looks upward as she groans. Just afterward she says, "I said I wouldn't do that". Earlier in this exchange, she spoke of her fear of and need to avoid tears.

Momentarily and forcefully gazing straight upward is a little recognized, yet quite common dynamic we all occasionally display when we are trying to keep from crying. This nonverbal mechanism is subconsciously driven. Ruby Rose's desire to suppress her tears was sincere.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3099: Jon Stewart Announces he's Leaving "The Daily Show" - A Classic Body Language Cluster (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday Jon Stewart announced he'll be leaving The Daily Show. A video segment of this surprise is included above.

While Stewart's eyes do mildly well-up with tears here (note the inside corner of Stewart's left eye) he does not fully cry. He also gives us a great example of multiple other congruent body language indicators. When two or more signs occur simultaneously (or nearly so) such temporal grouping is termed a nonverbal "cluster".

So other than the tears, the following nonverbals are very common during moments when crying and sadness are being partially suppressed:

• Extended upward gaze 
• Whites of Eyes turning Red (injected conjunctiva)
• Flared Nostrils
• A Vertical Stretching of the Mid-face
• Jaw Clenching
• Jaw Jut
• Inward Lip Roll (ILR)
• Hard Swallows (two)
• Facial Flushing (reddening)
• Banging on the Table

Although seen in varying degrees at different moments in this video - all ten (and Jon's tears make eleven) can be seen in one second during 2:30-2:31. What are some other common body language signs of suppression of sadness which are missing in this second?

Of course Stewart openly admits to near-crying here and because these nonverbal signals are densely clustered most will see and identify this emotional moment accurately. Yet very often people will display only one or two of these signs and they'll be spread out over longer duration. You'd be very surprised at just how often the otherwise socially adept and "successful" professional will completely miss these emotional cues.
