Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3729: The 3rd Presidential Debate - Donald Trump v. Hillary Clinton - Part I - Vladimir Putin, Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton faced off tonight in the third and final Presidential Debate of the 2016 campaign. The debate was held at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

During the portion of the debate when the topics of Vladimir Putin, alleged Russian hacking and their attempts to influence the American election were discussed - it was also the time when Donald Trump displayed the highest level of anxiety. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this exchange.

Deep sniffing (seen/heard during multiple times in the above video): Although other medical influences cannot be ruled out, Mr. Trump's deep sniffing is in part a nervous, tic-like behavior. His deep inhalations in this debate were most frequent during his discussion of Putin and Russia.

Drinking water (0:53 - 0:55): Although Mr. Trump drank water less tonight compared with the other two debates - he did so multiple times (Secretary Clinton did not drink water during tonight's debate). The mouth and throat both grow dry as a normal physiologic response to anxiety.

False Microphone Adjustments (1:00 - 1:02): Mr. Trump adjusted his microphone at least seven times during tonight's debate (more than either of the two previous Presidential Debates). This is a surrogate behavior for self-touching and is both a signal of anxiety (as is displayed here), however it can also be a signal deception (depending on the other nonverbal signals with which it is clustered).

Summary: The portion of tonight's Presidential Debate triggering the highest level of anxiety for Donald Trump was during the discussion of Vladimir Putin and alleged Russian Hacking.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3543: Donald Trump, "It Felt Like I Was Crossing The Border Actually" - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the GOP Convention in Burlingame, California today, Donald Trump entered and exited the building through a back door and via a circuitous path due to strategic placement of hundreds of demonstrators. Once began speaking, he told some lies - providing for us some excellent nonverbal examples. What follows is a partial analysis.

At 0:02 in the above video, Trump continues, ".... That was not the easiest entrance I've ever made. My wife called, she said, 'There are helicopters following you' - and we did, and then we went under a fence and through a fence and - [pause] oh boy, it felt like I was crossing the border actually, yeah - it's true ..."

During 0:12 Trump says, "... we went under a fence ..."

Note his hand gesture (in body language parlance, this is an example of an illustrator) is moving in an up-and-over motion, which contradicts his verbal statement of going under a fence. Whenever the nonverbal language contradicts the verbal language - it's the nonverbal that's always true.

Trump says, "... it felt like I was crossing the border actually..."

Whenever Donald Trump performs a false microphone adjustment, there's an extremely high likelihood he's telling a lie. Of course this is not his only deception tell - but it is one he commits often - and here we know it's a lie. In this example, he was using hyperbole, yet this deception tell still is displayed. This false microphone adjustment is a "MAP Surrogate" (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) as a substitute for self-touching.
