Body Language Analysis No. 4279: Rudy Giuliani regarding President Trump's alleged Sexual Relationship with Stormy Daniels - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Sunday 6 May 2018, Rudy Giuliani (one of President Trump's personal attorneys) appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. The former NYC mayor displayed a plethora of nonverbal tells. What follows a partial nonverbal analysis focusing on one key passage of the interview.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (continuing at 0:56): So the President does deny any sexual relationship with Stormy Daniels?

RUDY GIULIANI: He has, ah, I have not - ah, I'm notta, as I said, I'm not involved in that, but the reality is he denies - she denied it, then at, when, when it was opportunistic right before the - election, she came forward - and then of course, the whole thing happened with - Michael Cohen, an-, and, a it's history now because it wasn't a campaign anything ah, that -

The image immediately above was captured during the 1:00 mark as Rudy Giuliani said, "... has, ah ..."

From 1:15 - 1:16, as Mr. Giuliani "... history now because it wasn't a campaign ...", although somewhat less in magnitude (vs. the first example), he repeated the same eyes wide opened display.

The significance of widely opened upper eyelids - when occurring:

• Out-of-context
• Frequently

... can't be over-emphasized.

This Out-of-Context, Eyes Wide Open display simply screams that the person is trying too hard to convince you. Why? Because they don't believe it. Because they're lying. It's a profound and classic signal of insincerity. Indeed, if you were a directing an actor who was playing a deceptive scene/role - this is one nonverbal signal you'd want them to adopt.

SUMMARY: Rudy Giuliani's nonverbal behavior in this interview indicates that he believes Donald Trump did have a sexual relationship with Stormy Daniels.

Body Language Analysis No. 4215: NRA's Dana Loesch at CPAC: "Many in Legacy Media Love Mass Shootings" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday at the CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) in National Harbor, Maryland - the NRA spokesperson, Dana Loesch said very openly and deliberately, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings."

Her nonverbal and paralanguage behavior, as she spoke these words, was quite significant.

As Ms. Loesch bends forward at her waist, she temporarily decreases her height about eight inches. She then rotates her body in a semi-circle, facing different portions of her audience - while taking on a staccato rhythm with her vocal expression: "love - mass - shootings."

She is standing behind a lectern (as well as the chyron/TV banner which is blocking a portion of our view), but if we could see her hands - with high probability they'd be configured in a pseudo-prayer and may also be moving in a hand-chop dynamic, three times with each of the last three words of her sentence.

The cluster/combination of this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage behavior:

• Leaning forward
• Pseudo-prayer (with or without a hand-chop motion)
• Staccato speech
• Loud voice

Indicates the thought-emotions of:

• Melodrama
• Patronizing Emotional Tone
• Manipulation
• Deception

Whenever you see this behavior, alarm bells should go off - for the person who's displaying it - is trying much too hard to convince you of an idea, opinion, course of action, etc.

Why are they being so over-compensatory? Because, with high probability, they are lying.

Intriguingly, those individuals who display these signals are also often trying to convince themselves too - therefore it's frequently a signal of co-rationalization. They're trying to manipulate/convince/lie to you - while doing the same thing to (at least a portion of) their own psyche.

Moreover, people who use this nonverbal-verbal-paralanguage cluster are being condescending. They believe you (and/or your group) to be easily manipulated.

Summary: Dana Loesch's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior displayed at the CPAC on Thursday - indicates she is lying when she says, "Many in legacy media - love - mass - shootings." She is being melodramatic and patronizing in an attempt to manipulate her NRA audience, who she believes are easily fooled.

Body Language Analysis No. 4203: Mikaela Shiffrin and the R2E2 Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Mikaela Shiffrin is a three-time World Champion and a Sochi Olympic Gold Medalist Alpine (Slalom) Skier. Ten months ago (above video), she was a guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Ms. Shiffrin is a favorite to possibly repeat her Gold Medal performance in a just a couple days in PyeongChang. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a key portion of this interview.

The above image was captured during 1:59. This is a classic Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression (R2E2).

A Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression may last just a split second (thus a microexpression) but it can be of longer duration (several seconds). Nonverbal novices will often confuse the R2E2 with that of disgust - however, the two expressions have very different meanings (How do these two emotions and facial manifestations differ?).

Every single emotionally healthy person makes the R2E2 from time-to-time. Yet, when a person displays it frequently, you should always ask yourself the following questions:

What was their primary emotion as they spoke?
• What, specifically, are they trying to convince me of/Trying to Gain my Rapport?
• What are my gut feelings of their motive(s)?
Do they truly believe what they, themselves, are saying?
How do you feel about their overall level of sincerity (What's their Sincerity Quotient)?
Are they feigning a weakness?/Trying to Gain my Empathy? If so, what is it? Why?

The vast majority of the time, those who make the R2E2 expression are trying to rationalize - to convince themselves of something - AND, more importantly, they're also trying to recruit you/convince you as a Co-Rationalizer.

Summary: When you see the Rationalization Rapport Empathy Expression - be careful - for it's frequently seen when others are trying too hard to gain your co-rationalization, rapport, empathy, and trust.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3581: Hillary Clinton, Likability and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today on CNN's "State of the Union", Hillary Clinton was interviewed by Jake Tapper. During this dialog, Secretary Clinton displayed a pair of her nonverbal tendencies which work against her - contributing to her lower likability as well as lowering the public's trust in her.

Although Mrs. Clinton's interview style has improved, and she's had decades of experience in front of the camera, she continues to make the very freshman mistake of over-using her forehead as well as opening her eyes too wide.

There are certainly times when the eyes should be opened wider, even much wider than baseline (and it's normal physiology and psychologically to do so) such as during fear, surprise and moderate-to-severe anger (rage).

Another time we often see eyelids opened wider than baseline is during moments of emphasis. In such settings, both the widely opened eyes as well as the accompanying elevated and contracted forehead muscles serve as a nonverbal exclamation point.

Yet when a person opens their eyes too much and too frequently, it's human nature to look at his with suspicion - for it very often is the case the person is trying too hard to convince you of something. In fact when you see such nonverbal behavior - that's exactly what you should ask yourself, "Why is this person trying so hard to win me over?" And the next time you're buying a house, a car, an insurance policy, making an investment, hiring someone or going on a date - if you see this type of body language hyperbole - consider it a red flag.

Of course, when running for President, there are many times extra-emphasis is absolutely indicated, but if one does this too much it will server to drive down a person's sincerity quotient (e.g., trust) and likability.

When Mrs. Clinton was serving as Secretary of State, she rarely displayed this eyelid/forehead over-use - and her favorability ratings were significantly higher. After she left that office, the reemergence of behavior was a telltale signal of her intention to run for President.

Take Home Point: Over-use of the forehead muscles and eyelids the are opened widely too frequently indicates a person is trying too hard to convince you of something. It will lower likeability, favorability and sincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3477: Henry Cavill Asks Children - Batman or Superman? Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice promotional video, Henry Cavill interviews several children. He asks them (4-6 years old) which of the two superheros they favor, while discussing their various qualities and powers. Throughout the vast majority of these interactions, Cavill's forehead is contracted. This includes variations of the entire width of the forehead, isolated to the central forehead (CFC) as well as asymmetrical contractions (each of which have different sub-meanings).

Human adults have a strong tendency to over-use their forehead muscles when speaking to human children - and indeed we do so even to young animals. More specifically, we behave like this more often when they're not our own biological children. This behavior is a form of acting - and thus insincerity. We should NOT do this. Children can sense this melodrama at a much higher level of sensitivity than most adults ever realize.

Note that none of the children ever remotely contracted their foreheads as Cavill did many times - yet in this video, they're being touted as "brutally honest". Honesty is of course, sincerity as it is reflected in a single act or statement. The children (not actors) are thus being sincere with no use of their forehead muscles - while Cavill (a professional actor) is using his far too much in both frequency and amplitude.

This same behavior carries over when interacting with other adults. Moreover, if you had to say what is the most common nonverbal signal of insincerity? - It's over use of the forehead. Besides those who act this way around children, where else do we commonly see this nonverbal display?

1. Unskilled Actors (Those who are poor at the Stanislavsky method as well as Method Acting - unless perhaps they are playing one of the characters below)
2. News Anchors (Numbed to bad news)
3. Politicians (Very frequently insincere)
4. Sales Professionals (Those who don't believe in their product/service or are trying too hard)
5. Isolated Insincerity (Every person on occasion)
6. Chronic Insincerity (Antisocial Personality Disorder or colloquially known as Sociopaths)
