Body Language Analysis No. 4251: Cristiano Ronaldo's Bicycle Kick vs. Juventus F.C. - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

If you've never seen a bicycle kick before, take a moment now. You must watch this one by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid forward's coordination, timing, and power are difficult to believe.

But Ronaldo's athleticism is not the focus of this article - rather it's his nonverbal displays afterward.

During 1:09 - 1:11 (and captured in the image immediately above) we see an example of a Wide Open Tongue Jut (Not to be confused with a Loose Tongue Jut or a Tight Tongue Jut). A Wide Open Tongue Jut (WOTJ) indicates the thought-emotions of:

• Disinhibition
• Playfulness
• Self-Deprecation
• Sorry, Not Sorry

This is, of course, just one moment in time. However, those individuals who display a Wide Open Tongue Jut frequently, when compared to average behaviors/personalities, they are:

• More creative
• More sincere

Notice also, the configuration and position of Ronaldo's right hand. He's not only touching his chest - but his full palm surface is making contact (e.g., not just his fingers or fingertips). Moreover, this complete palmar contact is directly over his heart. This tells us that his thought-emotions are:

• Highly Sincere
• Of High Priority
• He's in the Midst of Emotional Processing (e.g., While the intellect knows what has happened, the emotional brain is still coming to terms with it)

Given the context, this is not at all surprising. Frequently, however, people will touch their chest with just their fingertips or make contact with the right side of their chest (the opposite side of the heart). Both such scenarios would indicate low sincerity.

Body Language Analysis No. 4205: Chloe Kim, Albert Einstein, and Creativity - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

What do Chloe Kim and Albert Einstein have in common? Besides both being geniuses (one athletic and the other in physics), in these two photos - they are each displaying an extreme derivative of a Loose Tongue Jut. More specifically, this nonverbal display is known the Wide Open Tongue Jut.

The Wide Open Tongue Jut (WOTJ) - just as it sounds (and are well-exemplified here) occurs when the mouth is momentarily widely open with the tongue extending dramatically. This behavior sends signals of self-deprecating emotions - but considerably more so than the Loose Tongue Jut. Yet there is an additional element of unabashed playfulness and disinhibition with the WOTJ.

It's helpful to think of the WOTJ as a Playful Nonverbal Version of Sorry Not Sorry.

Fascinatingly, individuals who frequently display the Wide Open Tongue Jut - will have high sincerity quotients - and also are significantly more creative.

It's crucial to stress that the Tight Tongue Jut has a completely different meaning than the Loose Tongue Jut or the Wide Open Tongue Jut.

Congratulations to Chloe Kim - the winner of the 2018 Gold Medal in the Women's snowboard halfpipe. Only seventeen, she's also a four-time X-Games Gold Medalist.

The above image was taken on Monday, shortly after her final Gold Medal run in PyeongChang.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3473: Adele's Tongue, Ellen DeGeneres and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Adele was a guest on The Ellen Show earlier this week. Among other things, she discussed the microphone falling into the piano during the Grammys Monday night. Afterwards she admitted "... It wasn't too bad. I treat myself to burger - and a beer ...".

Just after her food confession (during the 1:59 mark of the above video and isolated below), Adele displays a "Tongue Jut". This behavior indicates I've been caught/I've been bad and here it has a significant self-deprecating component as well.

Tongue jutting within a negative emotional context will tend to occur on the opposite side of the mouth vs. those tongue juts with more positive emotions. This particular left-right preference phenomenon is idiosyncratic to the individual and must be normed.

Most of the time a tongue jut (aka lizard tongue) occurs over such a brief duration that it's classified as a microexpression.

Nonverbal Communication No. 3195: Kinky Boots, Jeopardy, Body Language & Sheepishness (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this current viral video of a recent Jeopardy episode, this contestant can be seen in the midst of a cluster of facial expressions and other body language which can be described as "Sheepish" or embarrassment.

  • Partial, suppressed Sincere Smile
  • Components of Regret (Lateral configuration left mouth)
  • Mild Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated CFC)
  • Inner (medial) Eyebrow Elevation
  • Facial blushing
  • Palms-Up Hand
  • Extended Arm towards Alex Trebek
  • Shifting stance from weight equal on both legs to an asymmetrical, one leg (In this context, this is a form of "shrugging" with the lower extremities with an anxiety component as well.)
  • Looking Down-to-his-Right

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2625: Paul Walker of 'Fast & Furious' and Body Language of the Tongue Jut (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Paul Walker, actor and star of the "Fast & Furious" movies died in a car crash today. He was a passenger in a single vehicle accident in Southern California. The red Porsche Carrera GT, driven by his friend, Roger Rodas, struck a tree and light pole in Valencia, Santa Clarita, California. Both men died at the scene. Walker was returning from a charity event to benefit the victims of the recent Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines as part of an organization he founded, "Reach Out Worldwide".

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Paul Walker was loved by friends, other actors and fans. One reason for likability was his high sincerity quotient. A little appreciated nonverbal signal of high sincerity can be seen at the beginning of the above video when Walker recently appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon". Note at 0:24, just before he sits down, a "Tongue Jut" (aka "Lizard Tongue") can be seen. When clustered with specific other nonverbal signals, a tongue jut signifies excitement or self-deprecating humor.

Although not the case here a tongue jut can indicate "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done something foolish" or "I just got away with something". Do you know how to tell these tongue juts apart?

Rest in peace Paul Walker. You will be missed.
