Body Language Analysis No. 4171: Stephen Miller's Creepiness & Jake Tapper, Volume II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Did you see Stephen Miller's interview on Jake Tapper's State of the Union on Sunday? After a contentious interview, Donald Trump's senior advisor for policy had to be escorted off the CNN set by security upon ignoring repeated requests to leave.

Why do many people find Stephen Miller's appearance unnerving?

1. Monotone voice: Mr. Miller's relative lack of vocal variety (e.g., monotone) projects a blunted affect - a mechanical and robotic persona.

2. Tic: Miller's Right Head Turn/Left Shoulder Backward movement (a tic) will be accurately interpreted by many as betraying his anxiety and duplicity. This behavior has increased in the last several months. Please see yesterday's post (Body Language Analysis No. 4170: Stephen Miller's and Jake Tapper's Confrontational Exchange).

3. Hypo-expressive face: Miller's face has a low level of animation. In practical terms, it's helpful to think of this as a "Living Mask/Physiologic Mask" - an unnatural behavior which raises red flags.

4. Droopy Eyelids: Stephen Miller's upper eyelids are "droopy" - in medical terms, this is referred to as ptosis - and it's either longstanding (decades) or, probably congenital (and can be treated with surgery).

Symmetrical droopy eyelids (depending on the other facial components accompanying them) will project Arrogance, Contempt, and Disgust.

It's both fascinating and alarming that when Mr. Miller is in the company of people whom he feels are his superiors (The President, other high level White House staff, etc.), his eyelids droop to a lesser degree - but when he's around those who he believes are inferior to him (e.g., members of the press) - they become more droopy.

Summary: Despite being longstanding or perhaps congenital, Stephen Miller's already mildly droopy eyelids (ptosis) become even more droopy when he's interacting with those for whom he has contempt or disgust. His increasing tic, monotone voice, and hypo-reactive face - all serve to amplify this already rapport-destroying behavior.

Body Language Analysis No. 4145: Steve Bannon stumping for Roy Moore (and against Mitt Romney) in Alabama - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Steve Bannon held a rally in Fairhope, Alabama for US Senate Candidate Roy Moore. During the gathering, Bannon was highly critical of 2012 Presidential candidate, Governor Mitt Romney.

On Monday, Governor Romney had tweeted, "Roy More in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation. Leigh Corfman and other victims are courageous heroes. No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity."

Among Bannon's responses to Mitt Romney during his speech were:

"Judge Moore has more honor and integrity in a pinkie finger than your family has in its whole DNA,"

"By the way, Mitt, while we're on the subject of honor an integrity, you avoided service, brother,"

"Mitt, here's how it is, brother: The college deferments, we can debate that -- but you hid behind your religion. You went to France to be a missionary while guys were dying in rice paddies in Vietnam."

"You had five sons, not one day of service in Afghanistan and Iraq."

"Where were the Romneys during those wars? You want to talk about honor and integrity, brother, bring it. Bring it down here to Alabama,"

At multiple times during his speech, Steve Bannon held his right arm out - fully extended, with his palm down.

Bannon's gesture (Illustrator) is virtually identical to the Nazi salute.

Bannon is left-handed - yet he gestures with his right arm and hand. In conversation, speeches, television appearances, etc., an individual in a highly animated emotional state will preferentially gesture with their dominant hand.

But in multiple speeches, Bannon doesn't use his dominant hand - he uses his non-dominant hand. Why?

Because the Nazi salute is a right-handed salute.

Any person who speaks on frequently (e.g., any politician) will occasionally make a gesture which might resemble this one - but rarely ONLY with the right hand, arm fully-extended, palm-downward - and NOT anywhere near the frequency commonly displayed by Bannon. This is not a coincidence.

Summary: Steve Bannon displays a right arm, fully-extended, palm-down gesture with high frequency. He is displaying this gesture deliberately as a Nazi salute.

Body Language Analysis No. 4059: Steve Bannon Interview - Part II - "60 Minutes" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This article is part II of Steve Bannon's recent interview on 60 Minutes. (see Body Language Analysis No. 4057: Steve Bannon's "60 Minutes" Interview). The following analysis focuses on a crucial segment regarding Robert Mueller.

CHARLIE ROSE: Do you believe Mr. Mueller should be fired?

STEVE BANNON: No, I do not.

CHARLIE ROSE: Has there been discussions in the White House about firing him?

STEVE BANNON: N-, a-, d-, d-, a-, I would not tell you about discussions in the White House, but I would tell ya I n-, nothing I ever heard like that.

During 1:07, just after Charlie Rose asks, "Do you believe Mr. Mueller should be fired?" - the camera switches to Mr. Bannon. The image above captures his facial expression at that moment. Note in particular his lips. This configuration is known as an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). Both upper and lower lips are rolled inward as the teeth gently to moderately bite down on them. An inward lip roll is one method the psyche uses in its attempt to suppress both the inward growth of strong emotions - as well as any outward manifestations of these same feelings (of course it's not always successful). Most of the time the ILR is seen in the context of negative emotions (particularly anger), but occasionally with positive emotions (e.g., suppressing laughter when it's not socially acceptable).

In this context - immediately following a definitive and "yes-or-no type question", this nonverbal prefacing with an inward lip roll indicates, with high certainty, that a lie is about to be told.

And Mr. Bannon's answer? "No, I do not."

Immediately after saying this, he returned to another, less pronounced, ILR.

The fact that Mr. Bannon didn't use a contraction here - e.g., "No I don't" - or simply, "No" - adds significantly to the weight of the nonverbal inward lip roll display. This is an example of how language, paralanguage, and nonverbal language are all congruently pointing to deception.

A moment later we see another paralanguage tell after Charlie Rose asks, "Has there been discussions in the White House about firing him?"

Steve Bannon begins his answer with a five syllable stutter, "N-, a-, d-, d-, a-, I would not tell you about discussions in the White House, but I would tell ya I n-, nothing I ever heard like that."

Moreover, during his answer - first, he looks down to his left ...

... and then to his right. Such dynamic lack of eye contact during an answer is highly suggestive of a lie (this is an example of the colloquial, "shifty-eyed").

Furthermore, listen carefully to his answer - it's not at all a clear yes or no. "N-, a-, d-, d-, a-, I would not tell you about discussions in the White House ..." then he finishes his sentence with, "but I would tell ya I n-, nothing I ever heard like that."

Rather it's a stutter, followed by "I would not tell you" - followed by another stuttering indirect "nothing I ever heard like that". There's no "no" in his answer. This is a fantastic example of statement analysis coupled with nonverbal analysis.

Summary: Steve Bannon does believe President Donald Trump should fire Robert Mueller - and discussions of this nature have indeed occurred between the two men.

Body Language Analysis No. 4057: Steve Bannon's "60 Minutes" Interview - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the 60 Minutes preview video above, Charlie Rose interviews Steve Bannon - President Trump's former Chief White House Strategist (a newly created position) and CEO of candidate Trump's campaign.

From a body language perspective, there multiple valuable tells in this interview - one of which is discussed here.

During 1:37 - 1:38, as Charlie Rose says, "You seem to have done that at every point in the campaign - when he was in trouble, asking him to double-down on his rhetoric, double-down in terms of appealing to his base .... ", when the camera switches to Bannon's face, at the very end of Mr. Rose's sentence and for about a second afterward, Mr. Bannon Clenches his jaw muscles (Masseter muscles). Look carefully at the back of his jaw - in front of and slightly below his ears for a bulging muscle. His upper lip, which although is not very thick on Bannon's resting face - thins out so dramatically, it disappears. The area above his upper lip and below his nose (the "mustache area") also is significantly tightened.

We see this same pattern at 2:08 - 2:09 on Mr. Bannon's face as Mr. Rose says, "Did you lose confidence of anybody because they came at you at that point and said, 'Look, w, w, he ought to get out of this race - other than - Reince Priebus'?..."

If you look carefully, you can even see Bannon doing this when he is back-lit during 2:05 - 2:08.

Also, during 3:18, 3:27 - 3:28, and 3:29 - 3:30 - as Steve Bannon and Charlie Rose were discussing
Governor Chris Christie, Mr. Bannon again displays these same nonverbal signals multiple times. Intriguingly, there was also an additional component of nostril flaring and forward jutting of the jaw present in this segment.

In this second video of the same interview, at 1:10 Charlie Rose says, "I tell ya where many people suggest it should have gone. It should have gone in terms of denouncing - specifically from the very beginning - neo-Nazis and white supremacists and people of that political view - and they should have gone there because - ahhh, those were people that Americans in World War II went to fight against and you should have instantly have denounced them - and you didn't at first instinct. In fact, you seemed to be doubling-down in terms of a moral equivalency."

During most of Mr. Rose's statement, Mr. Bannon is clenching his jaw repeatedly. This is best seen on Bannon's face during 1:22 - 1:32. Yet as with the examples already discussed - if you look carefully, some of this jaw-clenching display can even be seen from behind when Mr. Bannon is back-lit.

All of these examples show Mr. Bannon, to varying degrees, in moments of adrenaline surges specific to anger. Please watch the videos carefully, as the still images do not capture the dynamic nature of these nonverbal signs.

Of course, we're all allowed to feel anger.  We're human beings. Yet - in a healthy individual, as with all emotions, anger should be:

• Contextual
• Proportional
• Not too frequent

Summary: This is but one conversation/interview. However, it's profoundly important to note that when jaw clenching, forward jutting of the jaw, thinning of the upper lip, nostril flaring, tightening of the mustache region (or other anger signals) are frequently displayed - take heed, for the person is far from emotional baseline - and Impulse Control Disorder may very well be lurking.

Body Language Analysis No. 4034: Steve Bannon's Critical Evaluation - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Perhaps you've heard? Steve Bannon has been fired. Although rumors of President Trump's chief strategist's departure have been circulating for weeks, what appears to have been the last straw for Donald Trump, was Bannon's recent and very public contradiction of the President's strategy regarding North Korea.

In the image above, Steve Bannon is in the Oval Office displaying a classic nonverbal MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) known as the "Double-L". Note how his index finger (forefinger) is resting on the left side of his head and directed upward, his thumb is resting on the side/base of his jaw (mandible) pointing posteriorly, and the remainder of his fingers are angled to his right. These three groupings of digits are oriented at roughly right-angles to each other, and thereby giving this gesture its name, the "Double-L" - which is a strong signal of critical evaluation (e.g., Whatever you're selling, he's NOT buying).

Of particular note is his middle finger. It's held over his lips (see below) and it's also isolated from the other digits. And although this signal is a subconscious/edge-of-consciousness phenomenon, the middle finger placement signals Bannon's psyche is simultaneously "shushing" the speaker - as well as flipping them the bird. This is a variation of a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

Nuancing further, we can see Steven Bannon's eyebrows and lower forehead are pulled together (medially) and lowered. His lips are also stretched and very thinned. The cluster of changes is consistent with anger.

Summary: In addition to his anger in this moment, Steven Bannon's display of a "Double-L" indicates a classic and strong critical evaluation of the speaker/idea/plan being put forth. Superimposed in this moment is the display of his middle finger MAP - which is an additional, potent signal of profanity and his desire to silence them.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3880: Donald Trump Trying to Suppress his Anger the Day after Jeff Sessions' Recusal (and The Day Prior to Trump's Wire Tapping Accusations) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and the close-up cropped portion below) was taken as President Trump was exiting from The Oval Office on Friday 3 March 2017. It was widely reported/leaked that Donald Trump had only just finished arguing with some his top staff, including Steve Bannon and Reince Priebus (a video showing what appeared to be an argument had also been published). Purportedly the President had deemed that Jeff Sessions should not have recused himself (the day before) from any current or future investigations regarding Russia (or at least Sessions had done so far too easily/early).

It's important to note that President Trump's, now infamous Tweets - in which he accused President Obama of directing a wiretap investigation of him/his staff/Trump Tower were made early the next morning (4 March 2017).

It's important to note that President Trump's, now infamous Tweets - in which he accused President Obama of directing a wiretap investigation of him/his staff/Trump Tower were made early the next morning (4 March 2017).

One expression we all often make when we're trying to control our emotions is an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). As the name suggests, the lips are rolled inward between the teeth. Often (but not always), the lips can temporarily, completely disappear. These images show a partial ILR and most likely represent a moment a split second after - or a split second prior to a more fully expressed example.

The inward lip roll serves as a tool or psyche uses to suppress both the outward display of strong emotion - as well as its inward growth. Indeed, this nonverbal is the source of the centuries-old idiom, "Bite your lip" (e.g., If a person is biting their lip, they cannot speak mechanically - but also they will be less inclined to speak, for their temper will be coming under better control.).

An Inward lip roll is most commonly seen in the context of anger, yet it can also be seen to suppress other strong emotions, such as sadness and joy (e.g., laughing in the wrong social setting), pain, etc.

Conclusion: Donald Trump's expression as he is exiting The Oval Office on Friday 3 March, is highly congruent with the reports that an argument with his senior staff had allegedly just occurred.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3859: Steve Bannon Touches Reince Priebus' Leg at CPAC - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an interesting moment occurred during Reince Priebus' and Steve Bannon's on-stage interview. Toward the very end of their appearance (24:53), Bannon pats Priebus' right thigh - and Priebus reacts - swiftly swatting him away.

Outside the arena of contact sports, there are only a few causes/reasons why one adult would touch another adult on their thigh. These include:

1. Power/Alpha/Deliberate Intimidation Display
2. Narcissism (a large overlap with cause No.1, above)
3. Sexual (However, this cause is not being suggested in this example)
4. Autistic Spectrum Disorder

What we're seeing here is an amalgam of both a Power/Alpha/Intimidation Behavior display- as well as a very deliberate manifestation of Narcissism (Nos. 1 & 2 above). Entering into another person's personal space without their permission (AKA, "an invasion" of their personal space [intimate space]) - particularly in such a public forum - and especially on the thigh, does not fall within the realm of normal behavior. Bannon is very much letting Priebus know - and letting the World know - who is the alpha male in President Trump's inner circle - and who is the beta.

Intriguingly, just prior to and during the precise instant of contact (24:53), both men were displaying "Tongue Juts" - yet not the same variety. Steve Bannon's jaw and lips were significantly more relaxed - ergo a "Loose Tongue Jut". This signifies the thought-emotion of, "I've been/about to be bad" or "I got caught" (Navarro/Captured in photo immediately above).

However, Reince Priebus' mouth and jaw were more contracted - thus his was a "Tight Tongue Jut" - indicating a Disdain for or being Repulsed/Disgusted by someone or something (isolated in the image immediately above).

A split second later, Priebus then exhibits an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). An inward lip roll is one way our subconscious/edge of consciousness attempts to suppress both the outward display of - and also the inner growth of strong emotions.

After being touched in such a manner in a highly visible and public context, Priebus' experiences a burst of adrenaline and anxiety - resulting in burning"/strong itching of his ear - which of course, he then grabs/rubs (24:56).

You may have also noticed that about a second prior to this (24:55), Priebus makes a "hard swallow" - signaled by his Adam's Apple (thyroid cartilage) vectoring up and down - which is also highly indicative of anxiety (best viewed in the dynamic context of the video).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3780: Donald Trump's Chief Strategist Steve Bannon Time Magazine Pic - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

Time Magazine named Donald Trump as the "2016 Person of the Year". When conducting the cover photo shoot of President Elect - the Time photographers also took pictures of Trump's inner circle.

The message communicated here by Steve Bannon's body language is certainly not to be ignored.

Trump's Chief Strategist right hand is being held in a variation of the "Double-L" configuration. This is called the Double-L because of two simultaneous right angles - one made by the index finger and middle finger - and the second between the thumb (not visible) and the index finger. This is one example (and a classic one at that) of a "Critical Evaluation" expression. Although Bannon may be partially listening, he doesn't like what he's hearing (and he's forming a plan).  His left hand covering his right further amplifies his tone of critical emotion.

The slightly downward angle (forward bending) of his head and neck are yet another components of this Nonverbal Critical Evaluation Cluster.

Bannon's eyes are not looking at the camera - but fixed at middle distance - signifying focused thought, contemplation and planning. He's not fully present.

It's also profoundly important to note that Bannon's middle finger is covering his lips. This is an example of what is know as a "Partial Emblematic Slip". Here the "Emblem" is the middle finger (when extended, the meaning of which is universally recognized). It is termed "Partial" because here it's not being used in the "Full Bird" form (e.g., held high in front of the body with the middle finger extended and isolated). The "Slip" terminology is included because it's subconsciously initiated (or occurring at the edge of consciousness) - rather than fully conscious and deliberate. In addition, the finger position over his lips indicate his desire for the other person to "shush".

Summary: This image of Steve Bannon coveys a classic critical evaluation cluster with an additional component of subconscious profanity. He wants the person with whom he's interacting to stop talking . Moreover he's contemplating a specific "counter-punching" tactic.
