Body Language Analysis No. 4147: Alabama Senator Richard Shelby regarding Roy Moore - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Trump recently recorded a robocall message in support of Roy Moore for one of the US Senate seats from Alabama. Richard Shelby - the person occupying the other Senate seat from that state - a Republican who has served in the US Senate since 1986 - wrote in another Republican (although he declined to identify this person).

In the above video interview, conducted on Sunday 10 December 2017, Senator Shelby said:

"I couldn't vote for Roy Moore"

"I didn't vote for Roy Moore"

"I tell ya what, I, there, there's a time, there's - we call it a 'tipping point' - ah, and I think - so many accusations, so many cuts, so many 'drip, drip, drip' - ah, when it got to the fourteen-year-old's story - story - that was enough for me - I said, 'I can't vote for Roy Moore' "

"I think the women are believable - I have no reason not to believe them"

"There's a lot of stories - there's a lot of smoke - gotta be some fire somewhere"

From a body language perspective, Richard Shelby has a symmetry problem. The Alabama Senator consistently speaks out of the right side of his mouth.

We should immediately think of several different etiologies when we see such a one-sided speaking style:

1. Medical causes such as stroke, muscle palsy, injury, etc.

2. Long-term habit/Tic-like behavior: Although it's not common, it's not rare either. We've all known individuals who speak out of one side of their mouth - despite a lack of medical causes.

3. Deception/Insincerity: A sudden asymmetrical mouth while speaking is one of many nonverbal signals indicative of lying.

4. Bravado/Swagger: Speaking out of one side of the mouth is one way a person may project Swagger and Bravado. Behaviorally, such braggadocio overlaps with the emotional of insincerity.

It's important to note that the first two categories reflect long-term behavior - while categories three and four are intermittent in nature.

Senator Shelby has spoken out of the right side of his mouth for many years. Therefore he fits into one of the first two categories - and more probably that of a Tic-like habit.

Across all cultures, individuals who speak out of one side of their mouth are judged by others to be less trustworthy. Thus, those who do speak asymmetrically should work with a physician and speech therapist to eliminate/minimize this problem.

Summary: Senator Richard Shelby is sincere in denouncement of Roy Moore. His asymmetrical mouth speaking style is very probably a long-term behavioral tic/habit.

Body Language Analysis No. 4146: Roy Moore, Red Flags, and Sociopaths - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In this image of Roy Moore (as well as the close-up and third image below), we see an elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC) along with a "Mouth Smile". Yet this smile is anything but sincere.

Now, of course, every human being makes this same expression ... occasionally. We do so as a nonverbal manifestation of the following emotions:

• Arrogance
• Contempt
• Disbelief (specifically, Smug Incredulity)

It's normal to feel each of these emotions from time to time (provided they don't occur too frequently).

Additionally, each of these emotions can also be projected by different facial expressions.

So, while we all display this expression once-in-a-while, those individuals who are Sociopaths (Antisocial Personality Disorder) will display this facial configuration with much greater frequency vs. the general population.

No psychologically healthy person will display this facial expression with significant frequency.

Summary: Whenever an elevated Central Forehead Contraction occurs FREQUENTLY along with a "mouth smile" (it's usually only a partial mouth smile) - it's not only insincere, but it also has a very strong correlation with antisocial personality disorder (sociopathic behavior).

This nonverbal display is so characteristic of Roy Moore, that he even chose a photo of himself with this same expression to use as his Wikipedia profile picture.

Body Language Analysis No. 4145: Steve Bannon stumping for Roy Moore (and against Mitt Romney) in Alabama - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday, Steve Bannon held a rally in Fairhope, Alabama for US Senate Candidate Roy Moore. During the gathering, Bannon was highly critical of 2012 Presidential candidate, Governor Mitt Romney.

On Monday, Governor Romney had tweeted, "Roy More in the US Senate would be a stain on the GOP and on the nation. Leigh Corfman and other victims are courageous heroes. No vote, no majority is worth losing our honor, our integrity."

Among Bannon's responses to Mitt Romney during his speech were:

"Judge Moore has more honor and integrity in a pinkie finger than your family has in its whole DNA,"

"By the way, Mitt, while we're on the subject of honor an integrity, you avoided service, brother,"

"Mitt, here's how it is, brother: The college deferments, we can debate that -- but you hid behind your religion. You went to France to be a missionary while guys were dying in rice paddies in Vietnam."

"You had five sons, not one day of service in Afghanistan and Iraq."

"Where were the Romneys during those wars? You want to talk about honor and integrity, brother, bring it. Bring it down here to Alabama,"

At multiple times during his speech, Steve Bannon held his right arm out - fully extended, with his palm down.

Bannon's gesture (Illustrator) is virtually identical to the Nazi salute.

Bannon is left-handed - yet he gestures with his right arm and hand. In conversation, speeches, television appearances, etc., an individual in a highly animated emotional state will preferentially gesture with their dominant hand.

But in multiple speeches, Bannon doesn't use his dominant hand - he uses his non-dominant hand. Why?

Because the Nazi salute is a right-handed salute.

Any person who speaks on frequently (e.g., any politician) will occasionally make a gesture which might resemble this one - but rarely ONLY with the right hand, arm fully-extended, palm-downward - and NOT anywhere near the frequency commonly displayed by Bannon. This is not a coincidence.

Summary: Steve Bannon displays a right arm, fully-extended, palm-down gesture with high frequency. He is displaying this gesture deliberately as a Nazi salute.

Body Language Analysis No. 4128: Roy Moore's youngest accuser, Leigh Corfman - Interview on "Today" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Leigh Corfman is, to date, the woman who was the youngest (14 years old) at the time when she alleges Roy Moore engaged in sexual behavior with her. In the video above, she tells of how Roy Moore, then an assistant district attorney, approached her and her mother in the county courthouse, drove her to his home twice - without the knowledge of her mother - kissed her, undressed her, and seduced her. At the time Roy Moore would have been 32 years old.

A thorough nonverbal evaluation of Ms. Corfman in this interview demonstrates complete honesty. Specifically, there are no signals of insincerity or deception.

One telling moment is captured and discussed here.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE (continuing at 6:42): A couple things, Roy Moore denies these allegations, and further says, he does not even - know you.

LEIGH CORFMAN: I wonder how many 'mes' he doesn't know?

Before, during - and to a greater extent after her answer, Leigh Corfman displays the expression shown in the above photo (6:54). In it, she projects a combination of Disgust and Anger. Intriguingly, men are significantly more likely than women to not see or mischaracterize this particular expression - and thus, also, are more blind to the emotions causing it.

Summary: Leigh Corfman's nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage during this interview are all highly congruent. She is telling the truth regarding her interactions with Roy Moore in 1979.

Body Language Analysis 4121: Roy Moore's Far Too Frequent Expression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTO)

This expression should raise your red flags - even if you're an Alabama Republican. It was taken on Saturday, 11 November 2017 in Birmingham. Roy Moore is, of course, a candidate for the US Senate. After The Washington Post raised allegations of sexual misconduct with minors, Mr. Moore defended his case before an audience and cameras.

In your efforts to learn nonverbal behavior, always hold the following Nonverbal Axiom with a top-of-mind awareness:

When confronted with an accusation, whilst refuting the charges, if the accused contracts and elevates their central forehead and central (medial) eyebrows (even with low frequency), while simultaneously configuring their mouth in a "pseudo-smile"- with very high probability they are lying

(This is but one form of a "pseudo-smile"- with the mouth corners up-turned - in a configuration kept while speaking - regardless of the word being pronounced - and it adds to the unnaturalness. This Is NOT a sincere smile - it's NOT a true smile.)

Learn to recognize this expression - even in its subtlest forms - without fail - for it's an extremely reliable predictor of deception/insincerity.

Body Language Analysis No. 4117: Roy Moore, Sexual Misconduct, and The US Senate - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Today the Washington Post published an article alleging that Roy Moore, currently a candidate for the US Senate, of sexual misconduct involving minors. These victims were, at the time, girls - including Leigh Corfman (who was 14 years old), Wendy Miller (age 16), Debbie Wesson Gibson (age 17), and Gloria Thacker Deason (age 18).

Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, "If these allegations are true, he must step aside."

John McCain (R-AZ) went even further saying, "The allegations against Roy Moore are deeply disturbing and disqualifying, He should immediately step aside and allow the people of Alabama to elect a candidate they can be proud of."

Roy Moore has not, as yet, made any statements regarding the allegations, however, the candidate's campaign manager, Bill Armistead, responded by releasing a statement, in part saying, "Judge Roy Moore has endured the most outlandish attacks on any candidate in the modern political arena, but this story in today's Washington Post alleging sexual impropriety takes the cake. National liberal organizations know their chosen candidate Doug Jones is in a death spiral, and this is their last ditch Hail Mary."

In lieu of a direct statement to the public and press, what follows are five nonverbal analyses of Mr. Moore during other unrelated events - focused specifically on sincerity vs. insincerity.

Look at the example above, it has two expression components which should set off your nonverbal alarm bells.

While smiles which are asymmetrical are not necessarily all insincere - many are indeed so. Sometimes true smiles begin asymmetrically - however, the vast majority of times, these will then crescendo into symmetrical (and sincere) displays.

You may have also noted Roy Moore's "Tongue in Cheek" display (also above). This indicates a smugness indicative of the thought-emotion, "I Just Won".

What other characteristic, displayed in the above photo, helps to differentiate Moore's expression as sincere or insincere?

A sincere smile (Duchenne smile) always has temporary, concave-up, furrows in the lower eyelids - this is the most crucial of all qualities necessary for a smile to be sincere. Note such dynamic furrows are not present in this example. Regardless of the other present here - This "smile" is very much INSINCERE.

Do not mistake wrinkles for furrows (furrows are deeper and are associated with active muscle contraction). In this example (as the image immediately above), Mr. Moore also has no lower lid furrows.

Yet look further though - for if the smile is sincere, there should also not be any lower teeth visible (with the only exceptions being if it's the beginning or end of a bout of laughter - or if a camera/viewing angle were looking down from a greater height/angle).

This "smile" is INSINCERE.

If the central forehead is contracted, even if all the other components of a smile are present - this is a profound red flag. Such "smiles" are NEVER sincere.

In this last example, note Roy Moore's entire forehead is contracted (not just the central forehead portion). He is also partially covering his mouth during this feigned smile. Both of these are warning signs of INSINCERITY.

Summary: When confronted with such accusations, any person wrongly accused would normally make a statement to the press immediately - answering all reasonable questions. Any good campaign manager or those experienced in crisis management would give the same advice. Hesitancy to make a public, on-camera statement and answer questions are largely due to one's guilt - and the fear of not being able to disguise it. When Roy Moore is asked questions regarding these allegations, look carefully for signals of sincerity - and also those of insincerity/deception.
