Body Language Analysis No. 4065: The Murder of Laci Peterson (Part 3 of 3) Scott Peterson's Red Flag - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is an image of Scott Peterson - who was convicted of murdering his wife, Laci Peterson and his unborn son, Connor. It was taken from a video (during 9:11 in the video included below) captured during the early stages of the search for Laci. From a body language perspective, this image contains a profoundly valuable tell - so much so, that had we been there, or seen this video on the evening news - we would have immediately, and with very high confidence, made him the prime suspect.

Notice Scott Peterson's right arm. We can see from this camera angle that his upper arm (humerus) is parallel with the ground. This is extremely significant.

Note also the angle his upper arm makes with his torso. Imagine, for a moment, we were viewing Peterson from directly above. The angle his arm makes with his torso - is approximately 70° (with 0° being straight ahead and 90° oriented directly laterally). This angle is also critical.

When talking on a phone, the vast majority of people, the vast majority of the time - will position their "phone holding-arm" close to their torso, with the elbow pointed down toward the floor/ground.

However occasionally, when any of us hears good news - or when we assume an alpha/hyper-alpha role (e.g., reprimanding a subordinate) - scenarios which are both temporarily high adrenaline states - we will configure our arm in a manner similar to Mr. Peterson.

Yet there are some individuals who will talk on their phone a high percentage of the time with their "arm-holding phone" held in this same manner. When performed frequently, this behavior has a very high correlation with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Impulse Control Disorder.

Moreover, men who display this phone behavior will also have a higher likelihood of inflicting abuse on their partners.

This association is even higher when the room is relatively small, relatively crowded, or when standing close to another person.

Summary: Scott Peterson's phone behavior, in the midst of actively conducting a search for his recently missing wife, indicates a high alpha emotional tone which is extremely out of context. This is a polar opposite display from a husband who normally we would expect to be worried, panicking, distraught, grieving, etc. Even a husband who is hopeful and "level-headed" would not be exhibiting this crucial nonverbal tell.

Body Language Analysis No. 4064: The Murder of Laci Peterson (Part 2 of 3) A Red Flag Conspicuous by its Absence - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is the second consecutive article regarding the Murder of Laci Peterson on this website. It has been almost 15 years since she and Connor (her unborn son) were killed. Scott Peterson - Laci's husband and Connor's father - was convicted of these crimes in November 2004.

What follows is a very telling signal described by Laci's mother, Sharon Rocha.

SHARON ROCHA (beginning at 7:43 in the above video): "I remember, the last time I saw Laci. She and I were sitting side-by-side. Scott was sitting on the floor. And we were watching TV and she said, 'The baby was kicking'. So I put my hand on her stomach because I never felt him - kick. She leaned over to me and she said, 'Mom', she said, 'Mom, Scott doesn't like to do this.' She said, 'I've asked to - you know, feel my stomach when - ahum, when the baby kicks and he never wants to touch my stomach'.

That really, really bothered me. And that was the last time I saw her."

Scott Peterson's behavior pattern of not touching and/or not wanting to touch his wife's stomach is profound. This is almost unbelievable distancing behavior and signals an enormous lack of affection for his unborn child and a diminishing affection for Laci.

Obviously, we have the advantage of knowing the unfortunate course of events. Yet, if you could travel back in time and speak with Laci Peterson (or if you ever come across a similar scenario), you would tell her that this specific lack of touching of her abdomen and/or Scott Peterson's lack of desire to feel his baby moving - are both dramatic signals of "affection drop-off". These tremendous red flags - tell us that (at best) Scott was actively in the midst of an affair - and he was already was planning on abandoning Laci and Connor. Moreover, this astounding lack of affection for both his wife and son were dramatic warning signs indicating the increased likelihood that they were both in danger.

Body Language Analysis No. 4063: The Murder of Laci and Connor Peterson - Scott Peterson (Part 1 of 3) Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

It's been almost 15 years since the murder of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Connor. On 14 September 2017, ABC aired a program reviewing her murder and the ensuing investigation - a segment of which is included in the video above.

Scott Peterson (Laci's husband, Conner's father, and the killer) displayed a myriad of very telling nonverbal signals. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

SCOTT PETERSON (beginning at 5:58): There is a lot of questions on why I have not been in the media. Media will put, I believe, emotional stuff out there for a couple days - and then the story would get dropped for something else. It was our thoughts, that if - 'f I was to hold back from the media, the media would continue to come because, frankly, cameras, reporters want something they Ω they can't get right away. So this was our way of keeping the media coming back for us.

and

DIANNE SAWYER (beginning at 6:37): So many people said, 'Christmas Eve, you have a very pregnant wife * and you decide to go fishing?'

SCOTT PETERSON (beginning at 6:43): My day was open to - um - y'know - play golf or go fishing. I chose fishing that day, which was - you know, ahum, choice I made, and I, obviously regret now. You know if I could - § and this would not have happened.

During 6:23, just after Scott Peterson says, "... because, frankly, cameras, reporters they want something they - but immediately before says, they can't get right away ...", Scott Peterson displays a partial (suppressed) mouth smile (notated with Ω).

During 6:42, just after Diane Sawyer says, "So many people said, 'Christmas Eve, you have a very pregnant wife" and just before she completes her sentence with, 'and you decide to go fishing?' " - Scott Peterson displays a quite subtle, but very telling microexpression (notated by *). Again this is a mouth smile out of context. Watch this portion at regular-speed and at half-speed several times as the still images don't capture the dynamic motion of this nonverbal signal.

During 7:01 - 7:02, just after he says, "You know if I could - just decided to stay home" and just before he says, "and this would not have happened" - Scott Peterson again displays a partial mouth smile (notated with §).

Smiling out of context (and importantly these are suppressed smiles) should always throw up red flags. Of course, the cause may very well be something innocuous - such a gaffe in church or with an impending practical joke - but it is always a signal there is some emotion being withheld. Nowhere is this nonverbal axiom truer than during a discussion regarding the disappearance and/or murder of one's spouse.

Suppressed smiling and/or subtle smiling out of context are forms of "Duping Delight". This phenomenon occurs when a person takes sincere pleasure in the belief that they are successfully deceiving someone. Of course, you may very well not agree with their actions, motives, or feelings - but of course, it's their emotions and perceptions controlling their nonverbal behavior.

Learning to spot subtle smiles, suppressed smiles, microexpression smiles, and smiling out of context will save you time, money, hassle - and maybe even your life. While these behaviors are certainly not always nefarious, sincere emotions are being experienced - and yet they're being squelched. And there are times you should always endeavor to learn the reason.
