Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3108: Kim Jong-un Haircut & mirroring his Deceased Dad - Kim Jong-il (PHOTOS)

While many in the media have poked fun at Kim Jong-un, his recent change in "style" gives us insight into what is going on in the North Korean leader's mind.

This image is a couple years old. He looks boyish. Some of his advisers may have told him so - but of course they would have risked their lives in doing so (Remember he had his uncle killed in 2013).

Kim Jong-un has changed his haircut, donned some glasses and trimmed his eyebrows to an even greater degree.

Why has he done this?

North Korea's "Supreme Leader" wants to look like his dad. Kim Jong-un is mirroring his deceased father, Kim Jong-il.

It could be that Kim Jong-un feels that others will respect him if he looks more like his father - the people of North Korea, his subordinates - or perhaps other heads-of-state. It's also possible that he has a type of identity disorder or an inferiority complex.

It's one thing to change your hair, it's quite another to want to look like daddy on such a public stage. Such an action suggests Kim Jong-un is psychologically unstable. Is he trying to "show" his father something? Is he trying to "prove" to us that he is as tough as his father? His behavior is a red flag. There is a high likelihood that this portends geopolitical chess moves or possibly worse.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2780: Oscar Pistorius, Reeva SteenKamp and Prosecutor Gerrie Nel - Body Language (PHOTO)

Gerrie Nel is pictured here with the end of temple of his glasses in his mouth. He is the chief prosecutor in the case against Oscar Pistorius for the alleged premeditated murder of his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. When a temple (aka arm) of eyeglasses is placed in the mouth or against the lips it signals a subconscious attempt to stall or delay a decision.

What a person does with his glasses along with other body language changes immediately after this common nonverbal display will tell you his emotions and intentions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2481:
U.S.State Dept., Marie Harf and Heavy Framed Glasses,
Body Language & Eyewear (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Marie Harf, Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, gave a press conference today. She addressed the recent temporary closures of U.S. Counsels and Embassies due to the possibility of terrorist attacks.

Note that the frames of Ms. Harf's glasses are heavier (e.g. wider and thicker) than average. This particular eyewear characteristic will cause others to feel she (or anyone) is more sincere (all factors being equal). Research also show that they also will make a person appear more intelligent - by an average of 14% higher I.Q. (Pease).

Marie Harf's frames are also slightly larger relative to her face compared with conventional style. This relatively enlarged quality of the frame will make a person look more authoritative and older - thus more experienced.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis #1516:
Ozzie Guillen Apology, his "Sincerity Quotient" &
Fidel Castro

Ozzie Guillen, the outspoken manager of the Miami Marlins, and the first Latino manager to win a World Series (with the Chicago White Sox in 2005), has landed himself in hot water recently for positive comments he's made regarding the Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro. He has since been issued a five game suspension.

In the two videos included in this post, Guillen has a very high "Sincerity Quotient". He's certainly an alpha male who's very good at what he does. In strong alpha individuals, it's extremely rare that a genuine apology or an honest and open discussion takes place when such an incident arises. You may like Guillen or "hate" him, but you've to respect this quality. "I'm sorry", "It's my fault", "forgive me" are three of the rarest statements, made in any language - particularly made so authentically.

When I began watching the second video, I was thinking - he should really take off his sunglasses - people will perceive him disingenuously if he leaves them on, etc. Then Ozzie himself spoke about the importance of "looking people in the eye". Later he repeated this as well as the significance being "face to face" when trying to patch things up. Guillen then took off his sunglasses. It was important for him - that other people to look him in the eye and see the sincerity and honesty in his eyes and on his face. He recognized the value of the human-to-human connection made during an apology and the increased ability to transmit such a very heart-felt emotion beyond that of just the words. Words are the symbols for the feelings which are the real movers in the hearts and minds of all those involved. I doubt Ozzie Guillen ever had a body language coach or read a book on nonverbal communication (indeed too few people have experienced either) but he certainly has and listens to his instinct.

Note that Ozzie did not stare at people when apologizing or discussing, if a person's eye contact increases over what it had been (generally speaking over 70% of the time when speaking in good, rapport generating conversation) - particularly when the STARE at someone's eye/eyes - there is an increased chance of deception taking place. Ozzie was not staring. His eyes naturally moved around to different people. If the amount of eye contact drops from baseline (or if a person keeps/puts their sunglasses on) - this also increases the likelihood that a lie is being told.

Ozzie is sincere. If I were an attorney conducting voir dire (jury selection), I'd pick him any day.

What Guillen may lack in verbal discretion, he certainly makes up for in nonverbal intuition. Go Marlins!

Negotiation Body Language Secret # 1488:
Ron Paul's Glasses, Authority and Time

Presidential hopeful Ron Paul is shown here taking off his glasses. This is a common body language tell when stalling for time is the emotional driver. Specifically, when a person needs a few moments to emotionally or intellectually process new information or when formulating a decision, the glasses will often be removed. Very often in such scenarios the glasses will be repeatedly taken off, put back on, taken off again, etc. Cleaning the lenses during these maneuvers is also often seen and is a further stalling adjunct. Glasses are also commonly removed at the point of the feigned theatrical denouement of an argument - commonly displayed in the court room, a political setting or during negotiations.
