Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3029: Dwayne Wade interrupted by Gabrielle Union in Post-Game Interview (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Gabrielle Union, an accomplished actress and of course Dwayne Wade's wife - interrupted a post-game  interview with her husband after his Miami Heat were victorious over the New York Knicks yesterday. What follows is a partial body language analysis.

0:19 Tongue Jut

Just after she says, "... it was okay ...", Gabrielle Union displays a "Tongue Jut". In this context it is a sure signal that she is thinking-feeling, "I've been bad".

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, what else may a tongue jut indicate?

0:31 Fear Face

Here the interviewer displays a classic signal of fear with his bottom teeth suddenly visible as his lower face and neck tightens and the corners of his lips pull back.

His eyelids also open wider than his baseline.

If this had been a physical threat rather than one of a social context, what would we have seen differently in his expression?

0:34 Bilateral Eye Covering & Emotional Processing

Dwayne Wade covers up both of his eyes with his shirt as his emotional brain is still trying to process what his intellectual brain already knows. Here this bilateral eye cover is seen as a portion of an embarrassment body language cluster. In what other emotional settings is this seen?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2934: Little Boy Goes Off On His Mom for Getting Pregnant - A Body Language Signal of Emotional Processing (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is a funny and amusing video of a precocious little boy just hearing his mother's news that he's going to have another brother or sister. It also demonstrates a very common nonverbal signal seen when significant news is heard, seen or realized.

During the 0:03 - 0:04 segment, this little boy covers up both or his eyes with the palms of his hands.

This is one body language manifestation indicative of emotional processing. The logical mind knows what is being seen, heard or thought - but the emotional mind needs some time to catch up to what the rational mind more rapidly assimilates.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2143:
Meyers and Bailey Leonard -
The Illini, The Marine & The Reunion -
Emotional Processing & Sincerity

This viral video shows the reunion of two brothers - Meyers Leonard, who at the time was a center on University of Illinois basketball team (he was picked no. 11 overall in the 2012 draft and now plays for the Portland Trail Blazers) - and Bailey Leonard, a U.S. Marine just returning from his deployment in Afghanistan. When Bailey surprises his brother on the court before a game, initially Meyers turns away (1:49 - 1:51) and covers both eyes, nose and his mouth with his left hand (1:50 - 1:58). Both the "turn away" and the bilateral eye/mouth covering are nonverbal signals that - although his visual system and his intellect are telling him the facts - his emotional brain is playing catch up to the sudden turn of events. Such emotional processing and its congruent body language are seen during major life and emotional scenarios - whether they are joyous or tragic (This was the most common facial expression among those witnessing the twin towers collapse on 11 September 2001).

A few moments later (1:58 - 2:08) Meyers covers his sternum with his entire left hand. Note his palm of his hand making contact. This is a very important and often overlooked detail. A "Palmar Touch" signifies a high degree of sincerity. While in such a reunion-type setting this body language is no surprise, it's a nonverbal that is very commonly feigned in negotiations, witness testimony, sales professionals - and in political debates, etc. We can recognize this "pretended sincerity" because only the fingers & thumb touch - and not the palm of the hand. A more extreme example of this insincerity is when the hand gestures toward the chest - but doesn't make any contact. Another red flag of insincerity is raised when the right side of the chest or stomach is touched by the palm of the hand - rather than the sternum, manubrium or the left side of the chest.
