Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3759: Nicole Kidman's and Jimmy Fallon's Almost Date Redux - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Nicole Kidman was on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show earlier this week. This was round two of reminiscing on "Jimmy's and Nicole's almost date" of years past.

One of the more obvious nonverbal signals you may notice is that Kidman and Fallon both blushed - Jimmy moderately - while Nicole did so profusely. While blushing is certainly not a requirement for sincerity, when blushing IS present, it's strongly correlated with an overall sincere personality (but not necessarily in that moment). Yet this was not the most interesting body language exemplified in this clip.

What follows is a more nuanced nonverbal display.

This image was captured at 5:28 - which was just before Jimmy Fallon first mentions Keith Urban (Kidman's Husband). In addition to her blushing, notice Nicole's backward leaning torso, closed eyes (a prolonged blink) and her crossed arms (all quite beta body language).

A few seconds later (above), Kidman leans forward as she positions the back side (dorsal aspect) of her index and middle fingers touching the base of her chin while she begins to disclose her surprise. Although Nicole is still projecting some beta qualities here (e.g., her right arm remains across her torso), she has definitely "dialed up her alpha" via this particular left hand configuration signifying a deliberate (planned) disclosure.

A moment later (above) these same two fingers straighten and their tips making contact with the underside of her chin as Kidman comes closer to her denouement. This change of finger configuration is indicative of increased adrenaline and its accompanying anxiety.

And in this final image - even closer to her "reveal" moment - only Nicole's index finger (aka "forefinger", which signifies the greatest alpha status and higher adrenaline) remains "standing". Here her anxiety also has grown even further. In this instant she's in a state of emotional dissonance - where she feels both "in control" - yet also nervous.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3088: Malcolm Butler at the Moment he Caught His Game-Winning Super Bowl Interception (PHOTOS)

The context of sport provides a fantastic forum in which to study nonverbal communication. This image of Malcolm Butler captured a fraction of a second after his game-winning interception is no exception. It shows the hero of Super Bowl XLIX with his eyelids opened more widely than baseline - particularly his left eye. This is either due to the emotion of surprise or more likely - a surge of adrenaline (Epinephrine). If this photo were of high enough resolution, we would also see his pupils dilated.

Can you name the other emotional states which cause the eyelids to open more widely?

The most information dense areas of the body with regards to nonverbal communication are the eyes. They display dramatic emotional differences with ever so subtle changes. Humans are the only primates where the sclera ("whites of the eyes") are significantly lighter than the iris (colored portion of the eye surrounding the pupil, e.g. brown, blue, green, hazel, etc.). Evolutionary biologists theorized this contrasting of color aides in allowing just such body language subtlety to be transmitted in conjunction with slight and dynamic variations of the eyelids opening, closing, tightening, etc.

Pay constant and close attention to very slight changes in others' eyelids. You will then begin to notice great detail to which you were once were oblivious.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2623: Kim Jong-un Impersonator - A Valuable Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

An Australian musician, who goes by "Howard" (and as yet has not disclosed a last name) recently created a buzz in Hong Kong, where he is dressed and was made-up in detail as Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea. Perhaps a good PR stunt, at least initially, Howard has made a bit of a name for himself.

In the brief interview included in the above video, Howard displays a valuable body language tell. Although we cannot see his feet, during the 0:23 - 0:24 segment, the impersonator goes "Up on his Toes" as he says, "... get dressed up and do some gigs with it ..." (Do not confuse this with the just preceding shoulder-shrugging). Although on some occasions this nonverbal signal can indicate an alpha emotional tone, in this case of the "Kimpersonator" and most other times, it signals excitement. It is one way the human body "bleeds out" excessive energy associated with these pleasant, high-energy (and high-adrenaline) states.

Negotiation Secret # 131:
When the eyes are "White and Wide"

This is French tennis player Marion Bartoli at the recent French Open. Notice the "Whites" of her eyes (sclera) are visible on the upper portions of each eye.  During most "normal" activity, about 2 to 3 millimeters of the tops of the iris/cornea are covered by the upper eyelids - from about 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock.  During activities of some extreme emotions, such as surprise and fear, the eyes display this "White and Wide" appearance. These emotional states are both accompanied by adrenaline rushes. Ms. Bartoli's adrenaline is elevated for another reason though - extreme athletic exertion. What are some other examples of this scleral show that we see every day - and should they be raising red flags?
