Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2521:
Jake Gyllenhaal, Jimmy Kimmel and the Tie Stroke
Mumford and Sons, Groupie Behavior and
Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Jake Gyllenhaal was recently on Jimmy Kimmel to promote his recent movie, "Prisoners". During the interview he spoke about his recent travels with English folk-rock band "Mumford and Sons" around the Southwest United States on a train as they toured.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Gyllenhaal shows us a common MAP-surrogate (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) known as a "Tie Stroke" at the beginning of this video. A tie stroke is a form of substituted self-touching where the long portion of the tie is lifted, adjusted and/or caressed during moments of heightened anxiety - rather than touching a body part.

Kimmel: "I think it was about a year and a half ago, you were with, you ah, went to see 'Mumford and Sons' the band."
Gyllenhaal: "Yes."
Kimmel: "And, a, a, you wound up going on tour with the band, True?"
Gyllenhaal: "Yes. True."
Kimmel: "How did that occur... and why?"
Gyllenhaal: "[a two second "Tie Stroke" begins, 0:17 - 0:19] Ah, Well, I cou, I count ah luckily in, in, ah this blessed life that I feel like I live, I count ‘Mumford and sons’ as, as a close friends I, I, I, I have a lot of friends from England. I’m not really sure why that happened but it did. And ah, and ah, they ah, I happened to meet them years ago before …."

Gyllenhaal feels anxiety that his groupie-like behavior is being discussed in such a public forum.

His multiple examples of stuttering are further (paralanguage) and congruent examples of his nervousness in discussing this subject.

There are multiple other body language tells of anxiety in the few seconds surrounding this moment. Did you see them all?

The tie stroke is usually downwardly vectored. The false tie-knot adjust (see below for this another similar signals) is a more obvious nonverbal consistent with even higher levels of anxiety.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis # 2030:
Barclays, Bob Diamond, LIBOR and Anxiety -
The False-Tie Adjust

Bob Diamond, the CEO of Barclays Bank resigned on Tuesday. This amid what appears to be the biggest scandal in banking history - of manipulating the LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate) affecting over 500 Trillion dollars worth of loans. The firms COO, Jerry del Missier resigned as well. Last week Barclays was fined a record amount for fixing rates - $455 Million (U.S.D). Incredibly, Marcus Agius, the Chairman who resigned on Monday, returned on Tuesday to fill the Chairman's position. Messy. Now, according to Diamonds testimony in a Parliamentary hearing and company documents, it is alleged and appears as if there may have been pressure from the Bank of England via Paul Tucker and other "senior Whitehall figures".

Diamond is displaying a "false-Tie Adjust" - a common male body language signal indicative of anxiety, fear, vulnerability or concern. It seems he has some good reason for such anxiety. This example of an nonverbal MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) has female analogs as well - playing with a necklace, touching or rubbing the lower neck - at or just above the manubrium (the upper portion of the sternum).

Diamond is used to being in the limelight - as are all senior executives - and in the above photo his poker face isn't bad. But human he is, and his emotions and thoughts leak out for everyone to see - just like the rest of us - if you know what to look for...

Other banks being investigated for similar possible corruption include Deutsche Bank, UBS, Citigroup, Royal Bank of Scotland, JPMorgan Chase and Credit Suisse.

Romance, Dating & Marriage - Body Language Secret # 1500:
Six Degrees? Leaning In, Head Touching and the Manubrium -
Kyra and Kevin are 10th Cousins, Once Removed

Turns out Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are distant cousins. The couple has been married for more than 23 years and have two grown children, Travis and Sosie. During their inclusion in the recent PBS series, "Finding Your Roots", DNA analyses were perform and it turns out that there is a bit more than "Six degrees of Separation" between the Hollywood couple. According to Kyra, her and Kevin are, "....10th cousins, once removed". Truth be told, if similar studies were performed on all married couples, this would be much more frequent than most people would think. It was even common knowledge at the time that FDR and Eleanor were 5th cousins, once removed.

I include the image above to demonstrate a powerful body language tell. When true affection is present, there is a leaning towards one another - often of the entire body. Sedgwick and Bacon are very often photographed displaying variations of this nonverbal. This universal nonverbal phenomenon is particularly true for the head & neck regions - and very often even a touching of heads is seen (in all cultures and even cross-species). Conversely, when affection begins to wane, this "leaning-in" and "head touching" will start to diminish and eventually cease altogether.

In the video segment below, where Kyra is featured on Late Night with David Letterman, she also revealed that she's distantly related to President Nixon, President Carter and Marilyn Monroe. Near the end of the video, when Sedgwick discloses her common ancestry with her husband, note that she touches the upper portion of her breast bone (the manubrium) - just beneath her neck. This "Manubrial Touch" is an extremely common body language signal of anxiety. A very similar maneuver is often seen when women will touch/move back and forth the pendant of their necklace and men will falsely adjust their tie or collar. Despite the fact that Sedgwick is a fantastic actress (she's a winner of both a Golden Globe and an Emmy) and she gets paid very well to suspend our disbelief - the sharing this information publicly - produces significant anxiety and even and accomplished and skilled actress cannot hide it. Nor can we.
