Body Language Analysis No. 4053: Donald Trump Regarding DACA - "I Have a Love for These People" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Tuesday US Attorney General Sessions announced what had been long anticipated - that The Trump Administration is rescinding DACA. Afterward, during Q & A on meeting regarding tax reform, President Trump was asked about that decision. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis.

KRISTEN WELKER (beginning at 3:01): Mr. President, how is your DACA decision 'treating people with heart'?

PRESIDENT TRUMP: Well I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them *§ - and people think in terms of children, but they're really young adults. Ah, π I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly...

In the video above, during 3:11 (notated with *), just after he says, "... I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them...", Donald Trump shrugs - but only his left shoulder and at the same time he displays a long-duration blink while looking down to his right. This Unilateral Shoulder Shrug is one example of what is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip".

It qualifies as an emblem because a shrug has a near universal meaning of - "I don't know", "I don't care", "What does it matter?" - the first two of which are particularly applicable here. It is partial in that it only occurs on one side (his left). And it's a slip because it "leaks" out - he doesn't intend to shrug here. It is subconsciously driven.

This Partial Emblematic Slip is amplified by his simultaneous extended blink while looking down to his right.

About a second later, during 3:12 (notated by §) during the same extended blink-looking down to his right, President Trump displays a "Loose Tongue Jut" (not to be confused with a "Tight Tongue Jut").

President Trump exhibits a second Loose Tongue Jut during 3:16 (notated by π), just before he says, "... I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly...". This also occurs at the same time he is looking down to his right in an extended blink.

A "Loose Tongue Jut" indicates the thought-emotions of "I've been bad" or "I've been caught" (Navarro).

Summary: President Trump's nonverbal behavior indicates that he does not care about the children and adults affected by DACA. These same signals also correlate strongly with deception when he says, "... I have a great heart for the - folks we're talking about - a great love - for them..." and "I have a love for these people and hopefully, now Congress will be able to help them and do it properly". Moreover, there is a complete absence of any nonverbal empathy displays.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3493: Reince Priebus regarding Ben Carson's anticipated endorsement of Donald Trump - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

When Erin Burnett asks Reince Priebus regarding Ben Carson's anticipated endorsement of Donald Trump, Priebus responds (beginning at 0:16): ".... [inaudible] I mean that's what you guys are reporting, I, I, I don't know w-, what the details are of that but, you know look, it's, ah [inaudible] Dr. Carson's done, did a great job, I mean he's been expanding our party. He's an important voice in our party. He's a good man, ummmm, but I don't know the details of it, but certainly there're a lot of endorsements going on around the country right now, ahhhh, and if it's true then that's a, that's a, that's a, that's a, that's a big get ..."

At three different times in this brief video the RNC Chair displays variations of a shoulder shrug.

When he says, "... you know look it's ..." (0:22) both of his shoulders elevate.

Again at 0:35 as he says, "... ahhhh ...", both shoulders shrug - although it's less prominent then the previous display.

Then during 0:37 (in above still image) when he says, his second of five consecutive "... that's a ...", his shrug is exclusive to his left shoulder. This is one excellent example of a what is known as a Partial Emblematic Slip.

An emblem has an accepted regional, national or universal meaning and is nearly always performed consciously (but not always). Emblems are often used in place of words because of their very specific meanings (e.g., a head nod yes, a head shake no, the middle finger, etc.). This third example of Priebus' shrug however, was a partial emblem because it was only on his left. It was subconscious and thus a slip - and thus leakage of his true feelings.

A shrug indicates either, "I don't know", "What can I do?" or "What does it matter?". Mr. Priebus either believes Carson's endorsement of Trump has no significant consequence or there's nothing he/the RNC can do to stop Trump.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3308: Hillary Clinton's Apology - Certainly Late, Yet Was It Sincere? - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week on Nightline, Hillary Clinton made an apology for not keeping separate her personal emails and her Secretary of State-related emails. What follows is a nonverbal analysis of this crucial portion of the interview.

Beginning at 0:55, Mrs. Clinton says, "... Um, but I do think I - could have and should have done a better job, ah, answering questions earlier. As I look back at it now, even though it was allowed, I should've used two accounts, one for personal, one for - ah, work-related emails, ah. That was a mistake. I'm sorry about that. I take responsibility, ah, and I'm trying to be as transparent as I possibly can ..."

During this very important segment, Mrs. Clinton displays several shoulder shrugs (simultaneous with her spoken words outlined above in bold-red). A shoulder shrug should never be used in the midst of an apology. Never. It sends signals of:
  • "I Don't Know"
  • "I Don't Care" or
  • "What Does It Matter?"
Moreover an apology should never include:
  • Torso Angled back in Chair (away from interviewer or audience)
  • Head & Neck angled back, tilted back (although this is not as pronounced here as with some of her interviews)
  • Crossed Ankles (very commonly used by Mrs. Clinton)
  • Intertwined Fingers
Note also that the former Secretary of state is using a lower volume, lower tone and slower rate of speech than for her is typical. And although lowering one's pitch, rate and volume are certainly valuable tools in helping to regulate our emotions' and moods' - these changes do not in isolation indicate or project sincerity. She's been coached to modify her voice in this manner - yet she's not pulling it off.

Taken in parts or in toto - Hillary Clinton's apology is insincere. In addition, she's sending signals of impatient dismissal and strong feelings consistent with, "I'm only saying this because I have to." Mrs. Clinton feels she should NOT have had to apologize. She still feels she did nothing illegal. Thus while her apology is not a sincere one, this would be a similar nonverbal (and paralanguage) display for nearly all of us who felt we were forced into an apology which was not owed.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2641: John McCain with Protesters in Kiev, Ukraine - You Feel Safe There? (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Senator John McCain is currently in Kiev, Ukraine. He is speaking directly to the protesters - whom for a month have been very vocal and in large numbers objecting to their President's (Viktor Yanukovych) desire and intent to strengthen socioeconomic ties to Russia as opposed aligning with the European Union.

McCain appeared this morning on "Face the Nation" where somewhat off-handling he was asked by Bob Schieffer (beginning at 2:19), "... Ah, We have seen scenes all week, some of these look like the scenes from the movie 'Les Misérables', ah, out there in the streets of Kiev, ah, I know you think you're bullet proof, but do you feel safe there Senator?"

McCain replies, "Ahhh I always feel safe Bob, I, I, I've told you in the past, I know I'm going to die but it's only going to be in bed."

At 2:34 as he says, "... always ..." and again at 2:35 - 2:36 as he says "... I, I, I've..." he shrugs - primarily with his left shoulder.

A shrug is an example of what is known in body language parlance as an "Emblem". An emblem has an excepted and specific meaning within a city, country, region or cultural group. Some emblems are universal or nearly so. A shrug is just such an emblem (here a partial emblem since it is mostly with his left shoulder). It is a nonverbal indicator of: "I don't know", "I don't care" or "What Does it Matter?".

In the context of a declarative statement - here, "... Ahhh I always feel safe Bob ..." this shrug strongly suggests doubt McCain has in his own words. That is, Senator McCain does not feel safe in the midst of the Kiev Protests. Note also when he shrugs in greater amplitude as he says, "... I, I, I've..." he is stuttering - which when particularly clustered with a unilateral shrug, is also strongly highly suggestive of doubt, deception and/or self-deception.

Mr. McCain's suffers from the residual effects of a peripheral Cranial Nerve VII palsy (probably Bell's palsy) on his left. This makes his facial asymmetry difficult to interpret. Shrugs can have a number of components - several on the face, the hands - and even the legs and feet.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2583: German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle - Is Your Cell Phone Being Tapped? (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Guido Westerwelle is shown in this short clip interviewed by Christiane Amanpour. He speaks about the NSA's alleged tapping of Angela Merkel's mobile phone in reference to fighting terrorism. Beginning at 0:13 seconds the German Foreign Minister says, "... You cannot, ah fight, ah terrorism by ah, ah taping the Chancellor's (Angela Merkel's) cell phone."

Amanpour: "Do you think your phone has been taped?"

Westerwelle: [Hand and partial Face/Head Shrug at 0:23 seconds] "I cannot exclude it, but I'm, ah prepared to everything."

At 0:23 Westerwelle displays a partial shrug. A shrug is an emblem - a body language term for a nonverbal display, the meaning of which is precise and known within a specific cultural group, city, country or region. Emblems can indeed be universal or nearly universal.

The meaning of a shrug can be, "I don't know", "I don't care" or "What does it matter?" (Ekman). Most people falsely believe a shrug to be manifested only in the shoulders, yet here Westerwelle shoulder's do not shrug - they move only secondarily because of his "hand shrug" and his head/neck tilt.

The thumbs are nearly always pointed up during a hand shrug and the fingers may be intertwined or in some form of a steeple (although the hands can be previously at rest and not in contact).

Although the German Minister's forehead has very little reaction, a shrug may often involves the forehead - which contracts across its entire width along with a concomitant elevation of the eyebrows. The eyelids will also commonly closed along with a thinning/tightening of the lips and a protrusion of the lower lip with a modest jaw jut. The corners of the mouth are typically vectored downward.

Flaring of the nostrils can also be seen. Indeed the toes/distal end of feet can even elevate along with the knees and a slight splaying of the legs (more commonly when sitting).
