Body Language Analysis No. 4028: Donald Trump's Response to Charlottesville Violence, "On Many Sides" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Trump spoke briefly on Saturday after the violence and death during protests in Charlottesville. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of his statement.

PRESIDENT TRUMP (continuing at 3:49 in the above video): ... But we're closely following, the terrible events unfolding in Charlottesville, Virginia. We condemn, in the strongest possible terms, this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence on many sides, on many sides...

During 3:59, immediately after President Trump says, "... we condemn in the strongest possible terms ...", he tilts his head to his left. This is a profound Red Flag.

The tilting of President Trump's head just after making such a declarative statement is a highly reliable signal of contradiction. His beliefs/convictions are not consistent with his statement. The words are not at all congruent with his body language.

Notice also the tone (paralanguage) of the President's voice - for it's not at all consistent with strength of belief

The President's lack of eye contact in this context is also very telling. As president, there are certainly speeches when one must read from a script or teleprompter - and perhaps that principle applies to portions of this speech - but not this portion. This particular sentence was the most important one of his entire statement.

During 4:05 - 4:06, Donald Trump performs a back-handed, hand sweep, as he says, "... on many sides ..."

And immediately following, during 4:06 - 4:07, he repeats a truncated version of the hand sweep gesture, as he also verbally repeats, "... on many sides ..." at a lower volume and lower pitch.

Hand sweeping signals low priority, dismissive, and contemptuous emotional tones. It's a very much nonverbally saying, "This is beneath me" and "What does it matter?".

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3840: Donald Trump regarding Vladimir Putin: 'We've Got A Lot of Killers. Do You Think Our Country Is So Innocent?' (Super Bowl Interview) - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Certainly one of the most controversial statement he's ever made since becoming President was spoken by Donald Trump during his "Super Bowl LI Interview".  What follows is a nonverbal evaluation of that crucial segment.

Beginning at 2:15, Bill O'Reilly continues: "Do you respect Putin?"

Donald Trump: "I do respect him. I -"

O'Reilly: [over-talking] "Do you? Why?"

Trump: "Well, I respect a lot of people. But that doesn't mean I'm going to get along with him. He's - a leader of his country. Ah, I say it's better to get along with Russian than not. And if Russia helps us in the fight against ISIS - which is a major fight - and Islamic - terrorism all over the World."

O'Reilly [over-talking]: "Right."

Trump: "Major fight - that's a good thing. Will I get along with him? I have no idea. It's very possible I won't."

O'Reilly: [over-talking] "But he's a killer though. Putin's a killer."

Trump: "[Th]'ere a lotta killers. [We] gotta lot of killers. Whatta you think our country's so innocent?
Do you think our country's so innocent?"

O'Reilly: "I don't know of any government leaders that are killers anywhere - "

Trump [over-talking]: "Wellll - Take a look at what we've done too. [We]'ve made a lot of mistakes. I've been against the War in Iraq from the beginning -"

O'Reilly [over-talking]: "Yeah, but mistakes are different than - "

Trump: [over-talking]: "... A lotta mistakes. It's okay - but a lot of people were killed - so lotta -"

O'Reilly [over-talking]: "Alright."

Trump: "killers around, believe me."

As the President says, "Major fight - that's a good thing. Will I get along with him? I have no idea. It's very possible I won't." During 2:39 -2:40 he displays a nonverbal sign known as a "Head Torque".

A few seconds later (2:44) as Mr. Trump says, "[Th]'ere a lotta killers. [We] gotta lot of killers. Whatta you think our country's so innocent? - he exhibits another head torque.

A head torque is composed of a combination of twisting (rotating) motion of the head and neck along with a forward thrusting. A head torque indicates an adamant and determined emotional mindset. It's a high alpha (even hyper-alpha) signal - thus those whom display it feel, that at least with respect to their audience (and here the audience is in the hundreds of millions, perhaps a billion people), they are the "Alpha" and everyone else is "Beta".

Note that the President uses the head torque twice in 5 seconds. Most people who use alpha and hyper-alpha signals tend to over-use them. This is a mistake - such over-use is off-putting (e.g., a rapport destroyer) to everyone except those people who are already strong believers/backers in the person or the opinion/idea/plan being expressed (and off course the same principle would hold true for anyone, not just Mr. Trump).

The head torque is their body language saying, "I'm going to do/say/think what I want and I don't care what you think". Whenever you see a head torque, the person projecting it has their mind made-up - they cannot be "reasoned with".

Summary: In this context, Donald Trump's head torque signals his defense of Vladimir Putin. Trump is adamant of his sentiment of, "Do you think our country's so innocent?". It also signals the President's dismissive emotions regarding O'Reilly's criticism of Vladimir Putin.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3578: Megan Fox, Body Language and Dismissive Emotions (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Megan Fox was a guest yesterday on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and she didn't disappoint - the actress provided some fantastic body language teaching moments.

During 5:04 - 5:06, Megan Fox displays a classic "Chin Brush-off" - as Jimmy Kimmel tells her that he knows how painful it is to have a baby.

This forward brushing motion made with the backside of the fingers and very often performed repetitively (but sometimes just with a single touch) - is a nonverbal signal of dismissal, disbelief and critical evaluation. Very often the person using this body language will be speaking in agreement - and here it is in sarcastic agreement - yet it's as if to say, "You don't know what you're talking about" or "I don't believe you" (or "I don't believe what you're doing").

Later in this same video (5:52 - 5:54, and punctuated by a near ear scratch), Jimmy and Guillermo are helping her to choose her baby's first and middle name. Even though she knows this is in the scenario of a talk show filled with humor and hyperbole, Ms. Fox again goes into a state of disbelief at what she deems as foolishness - once more displaying a variation of the chin brush-off.

It's also of significant note that Megan simultaneously displays a "Forward Lip Purse" during both of these occasions (easier to see in the second example). The forward lip purse is a sign of clandestine disagreement (and/or a clandestine plan) - and thus is very congruent with the chin brush-off.

Please watch the video, as the dynamics of this nonverbal behavior is important to see in context - with the words and the paralanguage.

Here there is an obvious comic overtone to this interaction - yet the vast majority of the time in our every day lives when this and other body language is used - there is no comedy transpiring and information is being withheld with serious ramifications. It's profoundly valuable to recognize when the words spoken are in disagreement with what is being thought and felt. It's there all around you to see - but you must know what to look for ...

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2754: Einstein, Gravity Waves, The Big Bang and Body Language (PHOTOS)

Today a monumental discovery was announced which both helps to confirm the occurrence of "The Big Bang" roughly 13.798 Billion years ago - as well as the existence of "Gravitational Waves" and supports the possibility of the Multiverse. Such gravity waves (which are truly ripples in space-time) were first predicted 98 years ago by Albert Einstein as part of his General Theory of Relativity. Physicists have been searching for their proof ever since.

As a tribute to one of the great imaginations of history, this post is dedicated to Uncle Al.

Depending on the other nonverbals present, a Tongue Jut may indicate either: an act of self-deprecation, excitement, "I've been bad", "I just got caught", "I've done a foolish thing", "I've got away with something".

Which of these apply to Dr. Einstein in the image above?

Armpit Exposed

Men primarily display this body language when they are feeling very alpha as well as significant emotional comfort.

Armpit exposure can be indicative of other emotions depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered.

Contempt

The former Princeton Professor is displaying mild contempt in this moment.

A Suppressed sincere smile with a component of contempt

Components of dismissiveness, smugness and some waning elements of a sincere smile (although not purely sincere) as if to say "Yeah, I told you so."

In this moment, Professor Einstein is feeling apprehensiveness and regret

Here we see a partially suppressed sincere smile with the necessary components of a relaxed (relaxed, non-contracted) forehead, concave up furrows present in each lower eyelid, upward directed cheek muscle contraction with corners of Albert's mouth directed primarily upward.

Sincere laughter of significant magnitude will like a sincere smile have a component of eyelid closure.

The more extreme the laughter, the greater the eyelid closure.
