Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2712: Bill Gates, Satya Nadella and Steve Balmer - Body Language Leaders Should Never Use (PHOTO)

The first, third and second CEOs of Microsoft are shown in this image at recent press conference. Bill Gates, Satya Nadella and Steve Balmer (left to right) are all displaying different nonverbal MAPs (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier). Despite these men all being brilliant, wealthy and very accomplished, these body language configurations all are significant for beta emotional tones. Gates' and Balmer's full and unilateral arm-crosses are suggestive of defensiveness and closed-mindedness, with an added critical evaluation component by Balmer (hand to chin) - while Nadella's fig leaf nonverbal conveys both low emotional comfort and diminished confidence.

With rare exception leaders should never adopt any of these nonverbal combinations.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2687: Is He a Bully? Chris Christie - Being and Looking Kinder - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Regardless of what side of the political isle you vote on, few would argue that any politician within a republic (or similar government) benefits from the practice or perception of bullying. Chris Christie is no different. He has of course been accused of being a bully. And whether he decides to run for President in 2016 or he permanently exits from politics after his governorship, he would benefit dramatically from moving away from this - in image or reality. Many things contribute to the behavior of a bully. One is being hyper-alpha in your words, your vocal quality and/or your body language. Interestingly, altering one of these three will tend to dramatically influence the other two. Thus if your nonverbal displays are aggressive - so will your words, your tone, etc.

The World over, index finger pointing is negatively received. Even if you like another person - you don't want them pointing at you. Politicians lose votes this way - yet few realize it. Note that Christie's fourth and fifth digits (ring finger and pinky) are tightly contracted, while his first and third digits (thumb and middle finger) are loose. If his entire hand (except for the pointing index/forefinger) were in a tight fist, this would be "felt" by the audience as even more aggressive. Additionally if his palm were facing down rather than perpendicular to the ground - this configuration would also dial up his alpha display even further.

A much better way to "point" to is with the palm directed upward, fingers and thumb held loosely, without the arm fully extended (only a modest bend at the elbow and shoulder). This projects a person who is open to others ideas and contributions - and yet still conveys strong and effective leadership. If you're in a leadership position, you should seek these qualities in order to build consensus. This body language is an example of an "alpha-beta hybrid" - which are recognized, understood and utilized far too rarely by those who are deemed "leaders".

What goes unnoticed my all but a few, is that when the hands display "kinder" body language, the facial expressions will mirror such emotions. The reverse is also true. In the image above, what does Governor Christie's facial expression convey?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2588: Body Language Reaction to a Racially Prejudice Halloween Costume (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

After Jessica Black of Craigsville, Virginia dressed her seven-year old son in a Ku Klux Klan "costume" for Halloween - it naturally caused a stir.

In the above video one neighbor, Wendi Sprouse said (0:39 - 0:48), "... I just think it's really sad, like that a kid is being taught that, that young, because they don't know any better, you don't hear that much about it nowadays."

At 0:40 just as she says, "...think ..." and throughout much of her appearance in this video, Ms. Sprouse displays a mild-to-moderate expression of disgust. This is most notable here by the bilateral nasal flaring. Other findings include the tightening of the area between the upper lip and nose (mustache area), a dynamic deepening of the nasal-labial fold (from sides of nose down to just lateral to corners of the mouth), tightening of her eyelids and tilting back of her head-neck.

Disgust is a very common and powerful emotion seen in the context of prejudice - regardless of which point-of-view is being felt. The disgust nonverbal (particularly when it is chronic) is also very commonly displayed by those who will and have perpetrate(d) hate crimes. Multitudes of photos of Hitler, Goebbels, Göring, Osama Bin Laden, etc. show them with this facial expression.

0:44 as she says "... that young ...", Ms. Sprouse's central forehead contracts as her inner (medial) eyebrows raise. This Central Forehead Contraction is seen in the context of physical or emotional pain felt directly for oneself or secondarily for another via empathy.

Ms. Sprouse is feeling emotional pain for such children who are being indoctrinated into a prejudice mindset.

Throughout her entire appearance in the video, Ms. Sprouse has her arms folded tightly across her chest - signifying a protectiveness-defensiveness, low comfort and closed-mindedness (against prejudice).

What other highly significant nonverbal signals were displayed in this video?
