Body Language Analysis No. 4386: Donald Trump and Ivanka Trump in Churchill's War Room - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

This image was captured on 4 June 2019, during President Trump's recent visit to the United Kingdom. Here, Donald Trump is seen with his daughter, Ivanka, and others, while touring Winston Churchill's sleeping quarters (a part of the Churchill War Room Museum) located beneath the Treasury building in the Whitehall area of Westminster.

What follows is a nonverbal analysis of this moment.

In this close-up of his face, we can see President Trump's upper and particularly his lower eyelids are tense. His mid-face is dramatically tightened - with his nostrils considerably flared and his 'mustache-area' extremely contracted.

His Jaw is Jutting forward - indicative of an Adrenaline Surge. Simultaneously, his lips are curled inward - covering his teeth with his mouth slightly opened in what is termed, an Inward Lip Roll. An Inward Lip Roll shows an attempt to suppress strong emotions from crescendoing.

In this moment the President's face is projecting considerable anger.

Note the placement of Trump's hands. His thumbs are hooked behind the waist of his pants, gripping his belt. The long-axes of each of his forearms-wrists-hands are directed at his groin. More specifically, his right index finger (the most dominant of all his digits) is also pointing directly at his genital region.

In a very general sense, this body language gesture is an example of a "MAP Surrogate" (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier). More exactly, it's an example of a variation of a Partial Emblematic Slip.

Trump's nonverbal behavior in this moment is dramatic and profoundly out of context. It's a Hyper-Alpha Sexual Display wherein Donald Trump is attempting to project an amalgam of his perceived virility and sexual dominance - along with his anger and sexual aggression.

Moreover, and of profound importance, at no time should sexual expression/sexual projection be accompanied by anger. It's never remotely healthy when these two emotions overlap.

Ivanka's head and neck are bowed. Her shoulders are slumped while her eyes are looking down - fixed and staring - primarily center-down, but slightly to her right. This is the direction of gaze associated with guilt, shame, regret, and sadness. She is caught off-guard and emotionally distressed.

Ivanka is whole-body pointing toward her father. Ivanka's hands are in a Fig-Leaf configuration (also known as Genital Guarding). In this context, this is a deeply-Beta, low-confidence, deferential posture with strong overtones for protection.

Summary: The nonverbal behavior captured in this photograph reflects the stark contrast between the two Trumps' thought-emotions. Donald is Hyper-Alpha - but Ivanka is deeply beta. Donald is pointing at his genitals - while Ivanka is protecting hers. Donald is projecting sexual aggressiveness and anger - yet Ivanka is feeling submissive, shame, and sadness.

Body Language Analysis No. 4358: Donald Trump, Pseudo-Christianity, and the Not-So-Subliminal Cross - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

I've analyzed Donald Trump's behavior thousands of times (over 400 of these analyses are published) - but this one stands out.

On Friday, on his way out to Marine One, Trump held a press gaggle on the South Lawn of the White House. He spoke about several subjects - one of which was Matt Whitaker.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of two key moments of Trump's exchange.

DONALD TRUMP (continuing at the 3:27 mark in the above video): I didn't speak to Matt Whitaker about it. I don't know Matt Whitaker. Matt Whitaker has a great reputation and that's what I wanted.

I also wanted to do something which, frankly, I could have brought somebody very easily from the outside. I didn't wanna do that.

When Sessions left, what I did - very simply is - take a man who worked for Session
[sic].

During 3:46 - 3:47, as he says, "... is take a man who worked for Session [sic]", Trump very clearly gestures with his right hand - and, as if he were Christian clergy giving a sermon - traces the sign of the Cross.

Holding his right hand in a vertical plane, he first gestures upward.

Maintaining this vertical planar configuration, he then moves his right hand downward.

His hand then comes back up - very deliberately - returning to the center of the cross.

Next, he then gestures to his left.

And then finishing this religious nonverbal metaphor by moving his right hand to his right.

Please watch the video, as these still images do not capture the dynamics of this behavior.

It's important to note that some Christian denominations traditionally gesture first to their left and then to their right, while others finish their crossing gesture in a right-to-left fashion.

Make no mistake, the President deliberately displayed this very clear sequence of gestures. Trump has never exhibited this unmistakable and classic Christian behavior in public since he announced his candidacy on 16 June 2015.

Now, go back a few seconds (3:42). The President proceeds through another unusual nonverbal cluster. As he says, "When Sessions left ...", he forms a fist with his left hand - holds it at mid-face level - and then moves it down as if he his pulling on a lever.

The President then forms a fist with his right hand (this image captured from a different camera). This double fist pose is a stance of aggression."

He then brought his fists closer together...

Then disengaging his fists, pulling them apart as his hands opened up.

This double-fisted sequence demonstrates Trump's clear dislike toward former Attorney General Sessions and the President's aggressive mindset toward stopping Robert Mueller's investigation.

SUMMARY
: President Trump used a traditional Christian crossing gesture on the South Lawn of The White House Friday while voicing his praise for Matt Whitaker as acting Attorney General. This maneuver was a deliberate and conscious act. In this context, such crossing is pseudo-religious - and indeed, it's cult-engendering.

Trump either perceives himself as a religious figure - or he wants his followers to view himself as god-like (or both).

Moreover, Trump's double-fisted dynamic indicates both his dislike of Jeff Sessions and his aggressive tactics toward Robert Mueller.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3916: Marine Le Pen's Anger and The French Election - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The first round of the French Presidential Elections will be held on Sunday 23 April. If no candidate should win a majority, a run-off election between the top two candidates will be held on 7 May 2017. Marine Le Pen is the leader of the National Front (FN) and is one of the favorites.

As with many people - politicians in particular, Le Pen's persona changes quite profoundly when she speaks in front of an audience (even a small one). When this occurs, the speaker is usually very unaware of just the dramatic nature of this phenomenon (or even that it exists at all).

Le Pen tends to default, rather frequently, into anger. Note that in all three of these images, her mid-face (the area below her nose and above her upper lip) is under considerable tension. Her upper lip is horizontally very stretched and thinned-out.

Also quite prominent is her forward jaw jutting - a configuration strongly correlated with high adrenaline states (which is elevated true during anger).

Another pattern in all three photos is seen with Le Pen's nostrils. These are flared - especially those in the first and third images. This is also associated with the emotion of anger.

When only (or primarily) the lower teeth are visible, it projects anger and often feels threatening. Le Pen's speaking style follows this pattern quite regularly. It's almost as if she's a character actor trying to "jump start" herself into an emotional state of aggression and anger (or even at times rage).

Now try this exercise:
  • Bare only your lower teeth
  • Jut your jaw forward
  • Tighten the area between your upper lip and nose
  • Flare your nostrils

The mere act of adopting this nonverbal facial cluster will increase both your adrenaline and your cortisol - and make you angry. By facially-defaulting in such a manner during her speeches, Le Pen increases her energy, her aggression - and her anger.

Conversely, if a person has difficulty with ‘Anger Management’ (Impulse Control Disorder), becoming more aware of muscle tension in these facial structures (and other parts of the body) — and thus relaxing these areas, will go a long way to curtailing crescendos of anger.
