Body Language Analysis No. 3642 (Reposting): Did Donald Trump Know Vladimir Putin Prior to The 2016 Election? - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is a reposting of an analysis originally published on 1 August 2016 (a little more than three months prior to the Presidential Election). The subject of this article is Donald Trump's and Russian President Vladimir Putin's relationship. More specifically, did then-candidate Trump know President Putin?

Updated cross-references at the bottom of the page, the title, and one word ("was" rather than "is") has been changed. The word "verbal" has been added and two added commas have been placed. Otherwise, the remainder of the content is unchanged.

There are many crucial moments in this video. One of particular importance is the issue of any possible relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

Beginning at 2:16, George Stephanopoulos asks the Republican Candidate for President: "What exactly is your relationship with Vladimir Putin?"

Trump answers: "I have no relationship with Putin. I have no relationship with Putin."

Now, listen again carefully to Trump's response. In his first sentence, as he says the word "relationship", he stretches out his "r" pronunciation. Also, at the end of the word he stutters so that the word sounds like "... rrelationship,ip ...".

Of paramount importance, in his second sentence - Trump's speech trails off when he says, "Putin". The word is spoken much quieter than the other words in the sentence and also when compared to Trump's overwhelming pattern of talking louder than other people around him. Moreover, within speaking that single word, ("Putin") his volume is decrescendoing - subsequently, the end of the word "Putin" can barely be heard.

As he says, "with Putin" in the second sentence, Trump breaks his eye contact with Stephanopoulos. The timing of his looking away is crucial because he is making a declarative statement with the subject of his sentence (Putin) as well as the volume patterns mentioned previously.

Moreover, Trump also looks down to his right. When a momentary drop of eye contact does occur during deception, this is the quadrant to which most right-hand dominant people will most often look (Trump is right-handed).

To review, we see the following behavior clustered during Trump's short answer:

1. Stuttering during word "relationship"
2. Decrescendo/rapidly waning volume with a crucial word ("Putin")
    A. Atypical pattern vs. rest of sentence
    B. Atypical speech pattern for Trump
3. Lack of eye contact during a "Putin"
4. Looking down to the right during "with Putin"

Summary: Donald Trump has a hesitancy to speak both the words, "relationship" - as well as "Putin". He also does not want to look Stephanopoulos in the eye when he says, "Putin". Donald Trump is exhibiting an absolutely classic cluster of paralanguage and nonverbal behaviors which are disparate with his words. Donald Trump believes he has a relationship with Vladimir Putin - and his belief is contradictory with his verbal statement which he made during this interview. Donald Trump was lying.

The next time Steven Spielberg is directing a scene in which an actor is telling a lie - he should look to this example.

Body Language Analysis No. 4124: Jeff Sessions and Russia - Part II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This is the second article on this site regarding Jeff Sessions' recent testimony before the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a crucial portion of the US Attorney General's exchange with Representative Shirley Jackson Lee.

REP. BOB GOODLATTE: (Continuing at 2:39:34): ... The Witness will answer the question.

REP. JACKSON LEE: Yes or no? Does he want to change his testimony in the intelligence committee?

AG SESSIONS: I would just say this - I stand by this testimony at the intelligence committee: "I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with the campaign or election in the United States. Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations - by anyone connected with the Trump campaign.

REP. JACKSON LEE: I thank you very much for that. Ahum, I would move to-

AG SESSIONS [over-talking]: What I did say in my opening statement - I explained that when I was asked, ah, in October - just a few weeks ago, when I was asked, ah, about the matter, ah, "Did I have - a- any knowledge of anyone who had, a- talked r-, to the Russians?". I indicated, ahum, m, m -, ah, that I had not recalled, that meeting, when that occurred - but I would have been pleased to have, ah, responded, ah, and explained it if I'd recalled it Ω [2:40:36]. I've tried to be honest about that and give you my best response, ah, and did throughout all the testimony I've given - Miss Lee.

During 2:40:30 - 2:40:31, as Jeff Sessions says, "... but I would have been pleased ...", the Attorney General shakes his head quickly side-to-side, in a clear "No" signal. This is a classic and strong verbal-nonverbal contradictory phenomenon. Whenever the words and the body language contradict each other - it's the body language which reveals the true emotions. Indeed, AG Jeff Sessions would NOT have been pleased to have responded.

Watch this portion of the video several times, as the still image does not capture the dynamic nature of this nonverbal display.

Just a few seconds later (during 2:40:36), after the Attorney General finishes that same sentence, "... but I would have been pleased to have, ah, responded, ah, and explained it if I'd recalled it Ω ...", Jeff Sessions displays a Forward Lip Purse.

A forward lip Purse is a priceless nonverbal tell - for it indicates a clandestine disagreement or a clandestine plan. Amazingly, a forward lip purse is also only made by individuals who feel they are an alpha relative to whom they are dealing. Moreover, it also indicates they believe they have a high probability of success in implementing their plan. It's vital to never confuse the forward lip purse with a lateral lip purse.

Summary: Attorney General Sessions' nonverbal behavior indicates with extremely high probability that he was being deceptive during this portion of his testimony. Furthermore, he has plans which he kept covert during this exchange with the US House Judiciary Committee.

Body Language Analysis No. 4119: Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at APEC Summit - Part II - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

For months it has been widely known that seventeen US intelligence agencies, including the CIA, FBI, NSA, and The Office of the Director of National Intelligence - all agree that Russia aggressively interfered with the 2016 US Presidential Election. It's also common knowledge that Donald Trump openly says that he doesn't believe Russia is guilty of this offense. The whole World also knows Vladimir Putin denies that Russia interfered in any way with the US election.

It's in this context that the following nonverbal analysis is made.

Note very early in this video (during 0:02) - as President Trump walks in back of President Putin, Trump calls his name. Once Putin orients himself, and as he begins to turn and stand, Trump embraces the Russian leader. He reaches his arm fully around Putin's back, beneath his opposite (right) arm.

To reach around another head-of-state's back to this degree - a considerable embrace - particularly in the context of the Russia conspiracy coverage and Robert Mueller's investigation - for a President to display this nonverbal dynamic in this context demonstrates only a limited number of possibilities:

• Affection
• High level of Familiarity (overlaps with affection)
• Narcissistic Personality Disorder §
• Hubris (overlaps with Narcissism)
• Combination of above

More specifically, this is very much akin to the psychology of a witness/accomplice who, after returning to the scene of the crime, is standing just outside of the perimeter of the yellow police tape. It's a nonverbal display of bravado.

Moreover, it also very much says, "Why would I hug/embrace Vladimir Putin if he were guilty of hacking the US Elections?"

Nonverbally, this is also an analog of the very common behavior of some individuals, who, when guilty of lying - look you right in the eye. It's an over-compensation phenomenon (e.g., "Everyone knows liars don't look you in the eye, right? See, I'm looking you right in your eyes.")

A non-guilty narcissist §, one who is capable of contextualizing, would not behave in this manner. This is something more. It's a ruse,  a camouflage - an attempt at misdirection.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3056: Jeb Bush Interview - 14 Dec. 2014 - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

There are few who need convincing as to whether or not Jeb Bush will be running for President in 2016. He has resigned from most of the corporate and nonprofit boards on which he sits, he's released hundreds of thousands of emails associated with his administration while he was Governor of Florida, and he has announced that he has "decided to actively explore the possibility of running for President of the United States".

In this 14 December 2014 interview on a Florida Television news program (This Week in South Florida), there are many great nonverbal signals, two of which are discussed below.

Note: The original video has, since the original post, been removed from its online source. The images below however, were captured from this video.

Early in this interview son and brother of former U.S. President continues, "... but I realize that at some point into this year, or early next year I'll make a decision to really pursue this or to, to stand down [loose forward lip purse].

Right after he says, "... down ..." Jeb displays a very brief (thus a microexpression) "Loose Forward Lip Purse" (at 1:47). This is a very specific nonverbal display indicating clandestine disagreement or - as it exemplifies here, a clandestine plan. A person displaying this perceives him/herself as the alpha relative to those with whom he is speaking/interacting, moreover there is a disparity (often an extreme one) between what is said openly and what is being thought-felt (privately). Those displaying this facial expression also believe that they have a high likelihood of success once their plan is put into motion

Later Mr. Bush says, "... and secondly, is it the right thing for my family? Can they accept the sacrifice that is forthcoming in this kind of, in this kind of deal? ..."

His word choice is particularly telling here - "that is forthcoming". Here and many times throughout this interview, Gov. Bush smiled - albeit in a somewhat suppressed degree - out of context (2:12 - 2:15 and the coincident spoken words are highlighted in red above). Such a partially (suppressed) smile - is a profound example of what is termed duping delight (This is further verified when coupled with the use of the verbal tell mentioned above). Bush has significant joy here - and he's not able to suppress it (and has several more examples of duping delight throughout this video). The possible future President needs to suppress his smile a bit more if he is to play poker on the World stage.

Jeb Bush is absolutely running for President in 2016. This was obvious to most of us for a while now - and yet if you witnessed this body language in another person or in another setting would you know what it meant?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2782: Hillary Clinton dodges a shoe - Body Language ... and Not (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday in Las Vegas, Nevada - presumed 2016 U.S. Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton had a shoe thrown at here while on stage giving a speech. Much (but not all) of what is seen in the immediacy of this rapid event is NOT body language - it is however a good example of a "Startle Reflex".

Just after 250 milliseconds after the shoe passes to her right and then in back of her, Ms. Clinton's eyelids close tightly and she begins to flex her neck forward in a posture of protection.

The former Secretary of State's upper arms retract closer to her torso, her elbows pull inwards as her lower arms and hands pull in close to the front of her upper abdomen and chest.

Note how Ms. Clinton's neck is foreshortened (think of a turtle retracting its head and neck in its shell). Her shoulders elevate and her neck flexes further protect the vital tissue of the neck.

In this view we cannot see her ankles, knees, hips and back - they all flex towards a truncated and very evanescent fetal position.

Despite the fact that she recovers from the incident nicely and pushes out a social smile shortly after this frame - in this view we can see Hillary display a very brief "Mouth of Fear". This is a true nonverbal expression (microexpression).

In this low resolution image captured from the video, we can see Hillary's eyelids opened wider than baseline and her mouth persisting in a fear expression.

If we could see her neck we would see a characteristic neck of fear with the tightening of the platysma and sternocleidomastoid muscles.

Very intriguingly - immediately after a loud startling noise, human beings almost always looks TOWARDS the noise in a reflexive effort to rapidly assess the situation (here where the shoe landed). This is part of the startle reflex.

Those who don't immediately look towards the sound have a very significant likelihood of having foreknowledge - and this phenomenon should be taken into account when evaluating for suspects after a bombing or similar event.
