Body Language Analysis No. 4139: Donald Trump, the Tax Bill will "Cost Me a Fortune" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Wednesday 29 November 2017 President Trump gave a speech in St. Charles, Missouri. Among other issues, he spoke about the current proposed tax bill. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of a key portion of his speech.

Beginning at 1:21, President Trump continues, "... So right now, America's tax code is a total,  dysfunctional, mess. The current system has cost our nation, millions of American jobs, trillions and trillions of dollars, and billions of hours wasted on paperwork and compliance. It is riddled with loopholes that let some special interests - including myself in all fairness, it's going to cost me a fortune, this thing - believe me - belief, this is - not good for me Ω. Me, it's not so -, I have some very wealthy friends..."

As President Trump speaks the words, "... myself in all fairness, it's going to cost me a fortune, this thing ..." he displays a Lip Curl. Simultaneous he speaks will shallow breaths - with the anterior (front portion) of his nose and mouth.  His voice is therefore momentarily nasal-sounding. This nonverbal-affectation cluster is highly indicative of Sarcasm and False Bravado.

During 1:47, as he says, "... believe me ...", the President's mouth briefly becomes very asymmetrical - favoring his right side.

A second later, during 1:48, as he says, "... belief ...", Donald Trump again speaks out of the right side of his mouth - although it's not quite as pronounced. Curiously, he seems to have cut himself off/misspoken (saying, "belief" rather than, "believe me") - thus his nonverbal asymmetry was also mirrored with similar truncation.

This statement analysis/paralanguage axiom stands on its own: When a person says, "believe me" (particularly when they repeat themselves), with high probability, they're lying.

A sudden asymmetrical mouth configuration is classic for both Deception and False Bravado.

The appearance of Trump's "Believe me" and "belief" - both coincident with his repeated one-side mouth speaking - indicates with very high probability President Trump was lying.

During 1:50, at the end of his statement, "... this is not good for me" as he says "me" and for a split second after (connoted by Ω), he touches himself on both sides of his chest. This gesture, because he only is using the tips of his fingers, is correlated with a low degree of sincerity.

Moreover, Trump touches his chest, with all probability, with only the tips of the three middle digits - not his pinky or his thumbs. His thumbs are - in a classic tell - pulling/pointing away from his chest.

Conversely, a high sincerity quotient is indicated with the touching of the full palm(s) to the chest (a full "palmar touch") - as well as the palmar surfaces of all the digits.

Notice too, how in the third and fourth pictures above, Trump's eyes are momentarily closed. Prolonged and/or frequent blinking is an anxiety indicator. It's crucial that these phenomena occur during his declarative statements. Blinking frequently and/or in a prolonged fashion is also a form of diminished eye contact. Suddenly decreasing eye contact is correlated with lying.

Summary: Based on his nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage/statement analysis behavior during this segment of President Trump's recent speech - with very high probability he is being deceptive when he claims the proposed tax plan would cost him a fortune.

Body Language Analysis No. 4138: Matt Lauer, Intimidation, and Aggression - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Anyone who has even casually observed Matt Lauer's behavior over the past twenty years should in no way be surprised by some of his female colleague's allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace".

Examine carefully each of these five photographs.

Anne Hathaway was on the Today Show in 2012 promoting her then recent film,  Les Miserables (for which she would go on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). Lauer initiated the interview bringing up the subject of an extremely embarrassing wardrobe malfunction. Moreover, he did so in a sexual manner, saying, "seen a lot of you lately".

But he didn't stop there, Lauer went on to say, "Let’s just get it out of the way. You had a little wardrobe malfunction the other night. What’s the lesson learned from something like that?" One has difficulty imagining how he could he possibly get any more patronizing.

Note the manner in which Lauer is sitting - with his legs crossed (European style). Sitting this close to any guest - regardless of their gender is out of context behavior for an interview. If space was limited - and he had to be this close - he should not have crossed his legs. And if he still felt the need to cross them in such close quarters, he should have pointed his leg/foot away from Anne Hathaway - yet he invades her space.

He does the same with most all of his guests - particularly the women. Included here are other examples of this same behavior with Jennifer Lopez and Katie Holmes.

Lauer goes out of his way to encroach on each woman's personal space - more specifically, their intimate space. With the ample area available in a major television studio - and when this behavior is of a chronic nature - it strongly signals the presence of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (however this is only one of many narcissist behaviors).

Narcissists routinely enter into other's personal/intimate space in order to intimidate and exert dominance.

Moreover, this and similar nonverbal signs can carry the additional significance of sexual displays and sexual intimidation.

But note how Lauer sits when interviewing Donald Trump. He points his torso, legs, and feet away from the President (at an angle of about 80˚ - 90)˚- and in so doing affords his guest much more space.

The fact that Trump is an even greater narcissist than Lauer is not lost on us, however. The President routinely sits (regardless of the gender of his interviewer) in an extreme example of a "Seated crotch display" (colloquially known as "Manspreading"). He also, with high frequency, sits forward in his chair (with his butt away from the back of the chair) - in addition to leaning forward with his torso. This is an example of another hyper-alpha sitting posture. The President's status and his body language intimidates Lauer - making the hunter momentarily the hunted.

In this last image of Lauer interviewing Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawk's coach is sitting with his legs essentially parallel. Lauer again returns to his narcissist default position. While Carroll is not, in an absolute sense, in any way beta in this moment - he becomes a relative beta because of Lauer's hyper-alpha, invasion of Carroll's personal space.

Summary: Chronic invasion of another person's personal/intimate space signals their poor emotional intelligence and is a routine behavior of narcissists. Depending on the other accompanying nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage behavior - it can also be a type of a sexual overture/display and a form of sexual intimidation and harassment.

These individuals will say, "I'm just comfortable this way" (or similar) - keep in mind this is only partially true. Translated, this really means that they're more emotionally comfortable only when they're asserting dominance, behaving aggressively, sometimes sexually (out of context) - and intimidating others.

Body Language Analysis No. 4137: Matt Lauer's "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace" - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Matt Lauer, long-time Today Show host, was fired from NBC this morning for allegations of "inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace".

From a nonverbal perspective, one profound warning signal of insincerity is a "smile" (a feigned smile) that's asymmetrical - particularly when it's displayed chronically. One of Lauer's common go-to expressions is pictured in two examples here.

While sincere smiles can begin asymmetrically, they will then crescendo into symmetry and project other fundamental characteristics of true joy-happiness. Suppressed sincere smiles can also sometimes be curbed in a one-sided manner - but again, such attempts at stifling sincere smiles will also display the required facial signals.

To nuance one of Matt Lauer's default expressions even further - one side of his mouth (typically his right) vectors upward - while the other mouth corner is directed down (usually his left). At best this expression signals sarcasm - but very often it's outright duplicitous. If you see this type of feigned smile directed at you, take heed - for, with high probability, the person making this face has thoughts and emotions which are in direct contradiction to what they're saying verbally.

Body Language Analysis No. 4136: Seminole Heights/Tampa Florida Serial Killer - Criminal Profiling - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Between 9 October and 14 November 2017, four people were murdered in the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa, Florida.

The victims were Benjamin Edward Mitchell (killed 9 October),  Monica Caridad Hoffa (13 October), Anthony Naiboa (19 October), and Ronald Felton (14 November). They were all killed between approximately 7:57 pm and 4:50 am - under the cover of darkness.

A witness to Ronald Felton's murder describes the suspect as a being male, African-American and 6'0" - 6'2" in height.

Several surveillance videos of the suspect - some of which are included in the news segment above, show the suspect both walking and running. During 0:42 - 0:48 the suspect can also be seen performing an idiosyncratic act of flipping his cell phone in his hand. As the Police Chief says - this could very well be used as a memory-jogger and an identifying characteristic. As he displays this maneuver with his right hand, the suspect is with high probability, right-handed.

The police also believe that the suspect lives in the area.

There is a practice among bird-watchers known as a "GISS" (sometimes spelled JIZZ) which is a description of the "overall impression or appearance of a bird garnered from such features as shape, posture, flying style or other habitual movements, size and coloration - combined with vocalization, habitat, and location". Often just a split second glance by an experienced birder can accurately identify the species."

A giss is, of course, biological in nature - although components of it may be learned. From a body language perspective, there exists an analog behavior in human families - e.g., siblings may exhibit specific nonverbal behaviors which are shared by - and have their origins from one of the parents. Most of us can recall seeing examples of this phenomenon as we progressively meet members of a given family.

People also often have very particular walking and running gaits - which also can act as a form of a "giss". By evaluating the suspect's running gait, I can say with high probability this person is "a natural". He very much has the giss of a practiced, experienced runner. Moreover, with high likelihood, this suspect ran track, cross country in high school, is/was a recreational runner, or an athlete in another running-dominated sport.

Those individuals within the running community in the Tampa/Seminole Heights area may very well recognize the suspect's running style/"Runner's Giss". This is particularly true for current and relatively recent members (as well as the coaching staffs) of nearby high school track, cross-country, and other sports teams. As part of these homicide investigations, members of these surrounding High Schools teams should absolutely be interviewed.

By watching the suspect running style in this video, it's easy to tell he is thinner than most people. But to nuance this further - if his height is accurately described by the witness at 6'0" to 6'2", his Body Mass Index then ranges from approximately 21.0 to 22.5 corresponding to a weight of approximately 150 to 175 pounds - and probably in the lower half of this range. Most people would describe this person as "thin" or "skinny". Seeing him with his shirt off, some of us may call him too thin, underweight, or even a bit malnourished.

Furthermore, his gait is suggestive of a younger male, between 17 and 25, but probably no older than 22 years old.

This suspect, with high probability, was also the victim of repeated abuse, violence, and or bullying of other varieties (e.g., unfair employment practices). The recent end of a long-term relationship may very well have acted as a trigger for the suspect's violent acts.

In summary, the suspect of the Seminole Heights/Tampa Florida serial Killer is:

• Male
• African American
• 6'0" - 6'2"
• 150 - 175 lbs
• BMI of 21.0 - 22.5
• Has a habit of flipping his phone in his hand
• Right-handed
• Lives in the Seminole Heights area of Tampa
• 17 - 25 years old
• Is/was an athlete, probable recreational Runner
• He's been abused, bullied at home/work/school
• Recently has experienced the end of a long-term relationship

Body Language Analysis No. 4135: What Makes Markle's Eyes Sparkle? - The Emotional Intelligence of Twinkling Eyes (PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement. They are to be married in the spring of 2018.

But besides Harry, what makes Markle's Eyes sparkle?

In order for a person's eyes to "Twinkle" - multiple conditions must be met. After the requirement of medically healthy eyes, by far and away the most crucial component for a "Twinkle in the Eye" - is that of a Sincere Smile.

And - the most fundamental element for a smile to be sincere - is that the eyelids must ALWAYS be partially closed. Indeed if you want to initiate a true smile, begin with your eyes - never with your mouth.

However, not all partially closed eyelids are created equal. The lower eyelids of sincere smiles will possess concave-up furrows. These are natural, healthy, and temporary changes which take place during the dynamics of a sincere smile (and should never be photo-shopped or surgically removed). Intriguingly, the eyes of mild-to-mild anger will also have partially closed eyelids - but crucially, these lower eyelids are tense and tightened with no deep furrows.

One important phenomenon occurring when the eyelids partially close - is the tear film (a very thin layer [itself made of three sub-layers]) briefly becomes thicker. This "deeper" liquid/tear layer thus increases the albedo (as well as the libido) - and momentarily increases the amount of sparkle. This phenomenon often gives rise to a second, or even a third foci of reflected light on the surface of the eye (cornea).

A smile of true joy-happiness must also be accompanied by relaxed (non-contracted) forehead muscles. Indeed, a telltale signal of some false/feigned smiles - is they are often accompanied by a partially or dramatically contracted forehead.

Teeth need not be exposed in order for a smile to be sincere. It's common for a partially suppressed smile to show none. Fascinatingly, such smiles will often more easily evoke smiles in others. When teeth are showing however - if the smile is sincere, the lower teeth will either barely be seen, or more typically - not seen at all. Exceptions to this rule do occur however - such as in the second image shown above: when the camera angle is looking down (or from the point-of-view of a taller, relatively closely positioned person). Another occasion where bottom teeth may be visualized in the context of a sincere smile is when it overlaps with sincere laughter (Sincere laughter often exposes all/most teeth, thus when crescendoing toward, or decrescendoing from an episode of sincere laughter - the lower teeth will be revealed).

When a true smile occurs - the cheek muscles pull primarily upward. From the point-of-view of the person who's smiling, this upward-pull will be felt more in the inner (medial) cheek muscles (closer to the center of face) versus with an insincere/feigned smile - which is felt more laterally (more so out toward the sides of the face). This difference in direction of the cheek movement with false smiles also gives rise to the classic - and very fake, "say cheese smile" (again insincere, exposing lower teeth - and importantly, canceling out the sincere "smiling with the eyes" component).

In the second image, Meghan Markle is shown in black and white - and, because her eyes (irises/irides) are brown, it's difficult to detect her pupil size. In the other photos, it's easy to see her pupils are either small or smaller-to-medium sized. When it comes to increasing twinkling though - larger pupils, because they provide a greater background and more dramatic color contrast - will give rise to a greater "sparkle factor".

Additionally, all things being equal, when our pupils are larger we are judged by others (who are not consciously aware of our pupil sizes) as more likable and more attractive. This is why restaurants considered more romantic will have darker lighting - because it increases pupil size. It's important to stress that sexual attraction also plays a part here - for it also increases the diameter of pupils.

Candlelight brings an additional "Twinkle Factor". The light from a candle is and always changing, millisecond to millisecond - giving rise to an extra dynamic nature to the sparkling.

The angle of the light source also influences the amount of twinkling. If the light is diffuse - or comes from behind the subject, there is essentially no reflection off of the eye. However, if the light is from a source in front of the subject (which, of course, is often the case in a photo), the twinkling is much greater.

Subjectivity also plays a role in how much twinkling we see. Frida Kahlo famously said, "Take a lover who looks at you like maybe you are magic." If we are in love with the person - we will truly (but subjectively) "see" (perceive) more twinkling. To a lesser extent, this also influences our judgment if we find the other person attractive or simply likable.

Summary: The "Twinkle in the Eye" we see/perceive/feel in another person is influenced by the presence of:

1. Partially closed eyelids
2. Concave-up lower eyelid furrows
3. Cheek muscles moving upward (not outward)
4. A Relaxed Forehead
5. Mouth component of "smile" must be sincere
6. Medically Healthy Eyes
7. The type of light source
8. The angle of the light source
9. Larger vs. Smaller pupils (e.g., the level of ambient light)
10. The presence or absence of sexual attraction
11. The presence or absence of affection and love

Congratulations to Ms. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. May you both stay forever young at heart.

Body Language Analysis No. 4134: Hope Hicks, Emotional Intelligence, and Communicating Nonverbally (PHOTOS)

Hope Hicks was named interim White House Communications Director when Anthony Scaramucci was fired on 16 August 2017. She was appointed to the position permanently on 12 September.

This image was captured in the White House briefing room.

Notice the components of Director Hicks' facial expression. Her inner (medial) eyebrows are vectored downward. There's also a tightening of both of her lower eyelids.

Ms. Hicks' torso is not rotated, and while her head is partially turned - her eyes have to gaze far laterally in order for her to fixate on the person who's speaking. We don't look directly at people whom we don't like, don't respect, and/or don't believe.

The Communication Director's mid-face is contracted - more specifically, she's flaring her nostrils and displaying tension in the region above her upper lip and below her nose.

Both of Hicks' lips are dynamically thinned - this is subtle and evident more so with her upper lip.

Her mouth opening is foreshortened with the lip margins oriented horizontally.

The contraction of her mentalis muscles (on the front of the mandible) give rise to her chin dimpling - a signal that she's also clenching her jaw. If you look carefully, you'll also notice the concomitant and subtle "sucking-inward" of her each of cheeks.

In brief Ms. Hicks' nonverbal cluster displays:

• Inner (Medial) Eyebrows Eyebrows vectored downward
• Lower Eyelid Tension
• "Side Eye"
• Nostril Flaring
• Tension in region above Upper Lip/Below Nose
• Lip Thinning (Upper > Lower)
• Horizontal Mouth Opening Orientation
• Sucking Cheeks Inward
• Clenching Jaw
• Chin Dimpling

Summary: Although she isn't speaking a word, in this moment, Director Hicks is feeling - and very much communicating - Anger.

Body Language Analysis No. 4133: Vladimir Putin's Default Face - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Vladimir Putin recently hosted Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Iran's Hassan Rouhani at a summit in Sochi. President Putin and the other two leaders are in discussions with designs to end Syrian Civil War.

Note the facial expression of President Putin in this moment:

• Forehead contracted and elevated along most of its entire width
• Upward vectored eyebrows
• Upper eyelids partially closed
• Nostrils mildly flared
• Mouth corners slightly down-turned

This is one of Vladimir's few "Default Faces". He wears it quite often. Now look carefully. The direction of movement of his forehead and eyebrows - contracting upward - versus the opposing, downward motion of his eyelids - is unnatural. These closely approximated tissues are pulling against each other. This is not a natural resting state for anyone's face.

This expression loudly projects the thought-emotions of:

• Contempt
• I am Distancing Myself from you
• I'm Bored
• I've had Enough
• You are Beneath me
• Arrogance
• So what?
• Disbelief/Doubt

Summary: Wearing a "Facial Mask" is a common tactic with those who desire a poker face. Such "Default Faces" are nonverbal analogs of speaking verbal clichés - for when we use either, a greater percentage of our brains' are then available for other tasks. This is NON-resting state expression - one has to exert effort to maintain it. The act/choice (which becomes ingrained in muscle-memory) of chronically projecting contempt, arrogance, boredom, and doubt - is a second, revealing layer of their story/mindset/motives.

Body Language Analysis No. 4132: Drake's Tattoo of Denzel Washington - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Denzel Washington, a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, was recently a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon promoting his most recent film, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

During the show (beginning at 3:35 in the above video), Jimmy Fallon asked Washington about Drake's recent Tattoo of Denzel. The tattoo, on Drake's arm (by artist, Inal Bersekov) pictures Washington as his character Bleek Gilliam - from the 1990 film, "Mo' Better Blues".

Beginning at 4:12, Washington continues, saying, "... That's quite - that's crazy. No but it, I think he got, he got, some other, like, people he admires - tattoos as well."

Fallon said, "Oh, maybe I'm on there."

Denzel then responds immediately - bursting with sincere laughter. He also rapidly scratches (during 4:23 - 4:24), four times, with his paired, left index and left middle fingers - just in front of his left ear on his "cheekbone" (zygomatic process).

When a person scratches or rubs the region in front of their ear - just after someone else makes a statement/answers a question, etc. - or just as/just before THEY (the person doing the scratching/rubbing) says something - with very high probability, HE BELIEVES or KNOWS what was just said was a lie. In an analog/watered-down sense, this can also be a tell indicating, "I disagree with you".

In this example with Denzel, it's obvious to us all that Jimmy was joking, Moreover, Washington is a world-class actor - and yet he still can't/doesn't suppress the subconsciously-driven, but very natural act of calling-out a lie when he hears one (even if it was told in jest).

Body Language Analysis No. 4131: Michael Flynn's Clandestine Plans - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Happy Thanksgiving.

Lawyers for Michael Flynn recently notified President Trump's legal team that they will no longer discuss the special counsel's investigation. This is seen by most as an indication that Mr. Flynn is cooperating with Robert Mueller's team or he's in the process of negotiating with them.

The photo above (and close-up below) of Michael Flynn was taken at the White House on Monday, 13 February 2017 - moments prior to President Donald Trump's and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's joint press conference.

These were also the last hours of Flynn's historically short (24 days) tenure as National Security Advisor. Later that day, Flynn was forced to resign after information became public that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his communications with Sergey Kislyak - who was at the time, Russian ambassador to the U.S. On 26 and 27 January, Sally Yates had informed White House counsel Don McGahn, that Flynn had misled Pence regarding his communications with Kislyak and was susceptible to blackmail by Russian operatives.

From a nonverbal perspective, the particular expression on Micheal Flynn's face is worth a trillion dollars.

Flynn's mouth and lips are configured in what is known as a "Lip Purse" - and more specifically, a "Forward Lip Purse" (not to be confused with a Lateral Lip Purse - which has a completely different meaning).

A forward lip purse is a signal of Clandestine Plans and/or Clandestine Disagreement. Crucially, it is only displayed by individuals who perceive themselves to be significantly alpha relative to another's beta status.

Those who make this expression may, in fact, voice some disagreement, at least a portion of it - however if they do so, you can be absolutely sure they are withholding a large portion of their dissidence.

Moreover, a person using the forward lip purse believes they have a relatively good chance of implementing their plan. With this in mind, it's noteworthy that Michael Flynn was looking at Jared Kushner when he made this face (that's the President's son-in-law and senior advisor in the left foreground of the photo).

Body Language Analysis No. 4130: Norah O'Donnell and Gayle King regarding Charlie Rose - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Charlie Rose, a veteran television host has been fired by CBS after the Washington Post published a story detailing his sexual harassment of eight women from the late 1990s through 2011.

What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of his co-hosts' responses - Norah O'Donnell and Gayle King - on CBS This Morning.

NORAH O'DONNELL (continuing at 0:12): I also want to say this - that this is a moment that demands a frank and honest assessment about where we stand and more generally the safety of women. Let me be very clear: there is no excuse for this alleged behavior. It is systematic and pervasive and I've been doing a lot of listening and I'm going to continue to do that. This I know is true Ω : women cannot achieve equality in the workplace or in society until there is a reckoning and a taking of responsibility. I am really proud to work at CBS News. There are so many incredible people here, especially on this show - all of you here. This will be investigated. This has to end. This behavior is wrong. Period.

GAYLE KING: Ah, I, I, I certainly echo that. And I, I have to say, Norah, I really am still reeling. Ah, I got an hour and 42 minutes of sleep last night. Both my son and my daughter called me, Oprah called me and said, 'Are you OK?' I am not OK. Ah, After reading that article in the Post, it was deeply disturbing, troubling and painful for me to read. Ah, that said, I think we have to make this matter to women - the women that have spoken up, the women who have not spoken up because they're afraid. I'm hoping that now they will take the step to speak out, too. That this becomes a moment of truth. You know, I've enjoyed a, a friendship and a partnership with Charlie for the past five years. I've held him in such high regard and I'm really struggling because - how do you - what do you say when that someone that you deeply care about has done something - that is so horrible? How do you wrap your brain around that? I'm really grappling with that. Ahum §, that said, Charlie does not get a pass here. He doesn't get a pass from anyone in this room. We are all deeply affected. We are all rocked by this. And I, I want to echo what Norah said, I really applaud the women that speak up despite the friendship. He doesn't get a pass because I can't stop thinking about the anguish of the, of these women. What happened to their dignity, what happened to their bodies, what happened, a - maybe to even their careers. I can't stop thinking about that and the pain they're going through. I also find that, it's, it's - you can hold two ideas in your head at the same time - you can grapple with things. And I'm, to be very honest with you, I'm still trying to process all of this. I'm still trying to sort it out because this is not the man I know, but I'm also clearly on the side of the women who have been very hurt and very damaged by this..."

During 0:13, as Norah O'Donnell says, "... I also want to say this - that this is a moment ...", she displays a "Self Righteous Head Wiggle".

A Self-Righteous Head Wiggle (aka "High Confidence Head Wiggle"), is characterized by a rapid, side-to-side movement of the head and neck (sometimes isolated to, or in conjunction with an analog jaw and/or torso component). It's indicative of an alpha emotional tone - one of high confidence and/or self-righteousness. This particular SRHW/HCHW was quite brief.

It's important to emphasize that a SRHW must be viewed in the context of a video as a still image does not capture its dynamics.

The SRHW may also sometimes have as a component a simultaneous backward motion (when disgust, contempt, and/or disbelief are present). Alternatively, a superimposed forward motion may occur when there is an arrogance or condescending emotions are coexisting.

It's crucial to listen carefully too - for the vocal pitch grows higher during a Self-Righteous Head Wiggle - linking body language with paralanguage. Please re-watch/re-listen to this segment and for a moment you'll hear Ms. O'Donnell's elevate an octave or two.

"... This I know is true Ω : women cannot achieve equality in the workplace or in society until there is a reckoning and a taking of responsibility ..."

During 0:34, just after she says, "This I know is true ...", Ms. O'Donnell displays an expression of contempt. More specifically, this is a microexpression of contempt. It's a quick and subtle contraction of the region adjacent to and above her left mouth corner. Watch this several times at regular speed and again at 1/2 and 1/4 speed. It's helpful to think of this as a fast, slight, snarl.

"This will be investigated. This has to end. This behavior is wrong. Period. "

Just after she says, "... Period." (during 1:00), Ms. O'Donnell turns to Ms. King with a combined expression of Disgust and Anger.

We can see the region above her upper lip evanescently tighten along with flaring of her (left) nostril. Her laterally-vectored tightened lips projects her anger. Ms. O'Donnell's partially closed eyelids - while not a required component of either anger or disgust - here serves to amplify both emotions.

During the vast majority of the time Ms. King was speaking, she was displaying an expression of Grief. More specifically, her Central Forehead was contracted and Elevated - combined with a simultaneous "Mouth of Sadness".

It's crucial to emphasize here, that when the Central Forehead Contraction is Elevated combined with even a slight upward turning of the mouth corners (e.g., those of a pseudo-smile, smirk, contempt, regret, etc. - none of which are seen here) - the emotion is completely different.

The image immediately above was captured during 1:05, as Ms. King said, "... I have to say, Norah, I really am still reeling..."

On multiple occasions during Ms. King's statement, you'll notice she displayed some intense clusters of very rapid blinking. Some particularly good examples occurred when she said, "... I'm really (1:39) struggling because - how do you - what do you say when that someone that you deeply (1:45) care about has done something - that is so (1:49) horrible? ..."

In this context (with her other concomitant nonverbal, verbal, and paralanguage displays) these rapid blinking clusters signify the phenomenon of Emotional Processing. The intellectual brain knows what has occurred - but her emotional brain is still trying to digest the events and the ramifications. Fascinatingly, Gayle King even gives verbal evidence of this same emotional-intellectual incongruity when she says, "... How do you wrap your brain around that?...", "... I also find that, it's, it's - you can hold two ideas in your head at the same time - you can grapple with things...", and "... I'm still trying to process all of this..."

During 1:55, just after she says, "... I'm really grappling with that, ahum § ...", Gayle King displays a classic display of Regret superimposed on her Sadness. This regret display - a directly lateral vectoring of the right mouth corner - is technically a bit too long-lasting to be a microexpression (ergo, a "near-microexpression").

Summary: We remember such moments of sincerity - when those professionals who, while reporting the news, also display their humanity. And whether it's in joy, sadness, or disbelief - it's in these rare, sincere times when we are most emotionally connected.
