Body Language Analysis No. 4080: Getting Under Donald Trump's Skin - San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Reacting to Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today, President Trump reacted to criticism on what many have said are the poor recovery efforts the US government has put forth in Puerto Rico.

He lashed out at Carmen Yulín Cruz - the Mayor of San Juan via Twitter.

He attacked her leadership - "and others in Puerto Rico".

Moreover, the President made a distinction which he didn't say about those suffering from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma: "They want everything to be done for them ..."

President Trump's retaliation was probably, at least in part, due to his interpretation of Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz's interview yesterday on CNN. Part of this interview includes the Mayor's reaction to Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke's statement. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of both Mayor Yulín Cruz and Acting Secretary Duke.

Acting Secretary Homeland Security Elaine Duke (beginning at 0:02): "I am very satisfied. Ahum, I, I know it's a hard storm to recover from - but the amount of progress that's been made and, and I really ahum - would appreciate any support, that, that we get. I know it - it, it is really a good news story - in terms of our ability to, to reach people - and the limited number of deaths that have taken place in such a devastating hurricane..."

During 0:09 - 0:11, as Acting Secretary Duke says, "... and, and I really ahum ...", she shrugs her shoulders while simultaneously displaying an extended blink (please view the video as this nonverbal signal is not able to be captured in a single photo).

Shoulder shrugging indicates the emotions of:

• I don't know
• I don't care
• What difference does it make
• What could (can) I do?
• What choice did (do) I have?

While the Hurricane itself is, of course, a natural disaster - these are not thought-emotions which are congruent with the feelings she claims in her statement: of "I know it - it, it is really a good news story - in terms of our ability to, to reach people ...". This dramatic disparity between her verbal and nonverbal message indicates she does not believe her own words.

As Acting Secretary Duke makes her statement, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz (who is listening but isn't seeing Duke's image on screen) displays a combination of facial signals indicating coexisting emotions.

What most people will first notice is her eyebrows are both being drawn together - and also directed downward. In addition, the Mayor's eyelids are mostly closed. This forehead-eye combination projects primarily bewilderment but also anger.

Now, look at her jaw. The Mayor's mandible is thrust forward (although this dynamic is a bit difficult to appreciate because it's directed toward the camera). This indicates an adrenaline surge indicative of anger.

The Mayor's mouth is also partly opened. But it's not widely opened - only partially. This partially-opened jaw is an outward manifestation of Emotional Processing (e.g. I know what I just heard, but I don't quite believe it - did she really just say that?!). This is sometimes referred to as "Slack-Jawed" - but it's a bit different than it's typically displayed since it's also mixed with the forward jaw movement (jaw jut) of anger.

Body Language Analysis No. 4079: Tom Price, Private Jets, and Nonverbal Disparity - Emotional Intelligence Secrets (PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Tom Price resigned his position as Secretary of Health and Human Services. On 21 September 2017, Politico broke the story that Dr. Price had used numerous private Jets and military aircraft for travel at government expense when ample commercial airline flights were available. Price has offered to repay the costs for his seats on these flights (about $52,000) - but not for that of his staff. The latest estimates for these total travel expenditures exceed one million dollars.

Dr. Price's behavior contradicts his repeated and very public declaration - his desire to cut and control healthcare expenditures. In the image above we can also see disparity - but in Tom Price's body language. What specifically are these signals - and importantly, how do we decipher them?

What's most obvious is Price's Index Finger Pointing. The dynamic of pointing with one's index finger (aka forefinger) is a hyper-alpha display and it's universally negatively interpreted - regardless of culture, country, ethnicity, or economic class. At the very least it's considered offensive and rude - and, when displayed frequently - it's very often clustered with other behavior (nonverbal and otherwise) consistent with narcissistic personality disorder.

The former HHS Secretary has his right eye open with his left eyelids closed. His right index finger is aligned with his right visual axis - and his thumb is extended vertically. This body language cluster strongly suggests he is using his hand as a gun metaphor. This is also a profoundly hyper-alpha display.

But now look at his left hand, arm, and his lower extremities. The angles of his thighs are not very far out-of-parallel - this display is significantly beta (particularly for a wealthy, alpha male [Price's net worth in 2014 was estimated at 13.6 million USD]).

His left lower arm and wrist are protecting his groin in a modified fig leaf (genital guarding) display - which is also consistent with low confidence and defensiveness.

Of particular note are the fingers on Price's left hand - which, although we cannot see them entirely, appear to be positioned beneath his right thigh. This is a high beta configuration - projecting low confidence, low emotional comfort, and a hesitancy to disclose information.

Summary: This image shows the former HHS Secretary's upper body nonverbal behavior in an alpha display - yet it's all very conscious and deliberate.

In contrast, Dr. Price's lower body displays are projecting a beta mindset - the need for protection, and a hesitancy to disclose - but in distinction, these are all subconsciously controlled.

Whenever nonverbal signals appear to be disparate or contradictory - the behavior which is subconsciously driven display the person's true emotions.

Body Language Analysis No. 4078: Toddler Steals Prince Harry's Popcorn - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

During an event at the Invictus Games, a toddler repeatedly helped herself to Prince Harry's popcorn. When Harry finally "caught" her - he was playful (Of course, he probably knew all along she was pinching his popcorn [longer version here]).

Like most good-natured uncles - Prince Harry interacted well with the little girl. Upon teasing her, he instinctively realized he may have gone a bit too far. A beautiful manifestation of his psyche's awareness of this infraction is seen during 0:31 - in the form of a very specific microexpression.

Here Harry displays a classic example of a "Loose Tongue Jut" (be careful not to confuse this with a "Tight Tongue Jut" - which has a completely different meaning). It's also sometimes referred to as a "Lizard Tongue".

A Loose Tongue Jut signals "I've been bad", "I've been caught" (Navarro) - and, as it's exampled here, it's very often a self-deprecating act. It's our psyche calling us out - e.g., "My bad!". It's important to note that Prince Harry wasn't deliberately sticking his tongue out at the child - rather the teasing action came earlier via the popcorn. The Loose Tongue Jut dynamic is subconsciously driven.

Watch this video at regular speed - without looking at the time marker - you may very well miss it. Then when you do see it (occurring during 0:31) - note how quickly it happens. Next, view it at 1/4 speed - it's still quite evanescent.

Body Language Analysis No. 4077: A Facial Expression Common to Both Bad Actors and Sociopaths - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Watch this video with no audio. What facial expression does Zac Efron display with a very high frequency? - An expression which he uses much more often than is seen in the general population?

These images above are but three of many examples: an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (elevated CFC) simultaneous (or nearly simultaneous) with a partial (Insincere) mouth smile.

Now, of course, we all exhibit this same expression on occasion. These include the emotional displays of:

• Arrogance
• Disbelief (more specifically, Smug Incredulity)
• Contempt

We're all allowed to feel these emotions - once in a while. As long as these feelings don't occur too frequently - they are part of the normal human experience. It's also important to note that all three of these emotions may be manifested via other facial expressions.

But Sociopaths (Antisocial Personality Disorder) and bad actors (can you name any other groups?) will display this facial configuration with much greater frequency compared with the general population.

Intriguingly - if we nuance this behavior further within the acting profession - men (both straight and gay) commit this theatric faux pas much more often than women.

What should immediately strike you is the common denominator of these two groups. For sociopaths are, to a large extent, actors. They're not great actors - but most of them, for at least small segments of time, are fair-to-good actors (exceptions exist of course). And to be clear, I'm NOT saying Zac Efron is a sociopath (however, in this "Vogue 73 Questions" interview, he WAS acting - he wasn't simply being "Zac").

No one who is psychologically healthy will display this facial expression too often. Thus, if you're an actor or an acting coach - eliminate it. And, for everyone else - be on guard.

Summary: When it's displayed frequently (not just within a single conversation) - an elevated central forehead contraction together with a simultaneous/nearly simultaneous mouth smile (usually just a partial smile, and by definition an insincere, mouth smile) - has a very high correlation with antisocial personality disorder (sociopathic behavior). Take heed.

Body Language Analysis No. 4076: Roger Stone Speaks to the Press after House Intelligence Committee Testimony - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, Roger Stone gave a closed-door testimony before the House Intelligence Committee. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of Mr. Stone during a brief press conference he gave afterward.

During a question regarding Paul Manafort's anticipated indictment, Roger Stone displays a classic "Jaw Confessional" (from 0:41 - 0:43). A jaw confessional is a lateral movement of the jaw made just prior to an embarrassing or regretful statement or answer.

Notice also, Mr. Stone simultaneously looks down and to his right. This is by far the most common quadrant of gaze looked toward during moments of sadness and/or regret.

Roger Stone's jaw confessional in this moment possibly signals his embarrassment and/or regret for Paul Manafort. If Mr. Stone and Mr. Manafort are friends - this would be understandable. However, if Mr. Stone and Mr. Manafort are not true friends, the other possibility is that this signal would indicate any embarrassment, sadness, or regret Stone feels is self-directed - and that Mr. Stone may be anticipating his own possible indictment.

Mr. Stone displays multiple microexpressions of contempt during this exchange. The example pictured above occurs when he says, "... Senate Intelligence Committee ..." (during 0:07).

As the journalist asks, "And just what happened in there? Ah, how much of the questions focused on, ah, your, your questions - through an intermediary with Mr. Assange - as well as, ah, this discussion over Twitter with, ah, Guccifer?"

During 1:36, as soon as the journalist says, "... this discussion over Twitter ...", although we can't see it directly - we can easily tell both of Mr. Stone's arms move from his sides to his front - and he clasps his hands or holds his hand-to-wrist (e.g., a fig leaf or similar variation) - while he also simultaneously tilts his head/neck backward, inhales deeply, and displays a partial eyelid closure. This indicates that Mr. Stone feels very vulnerable to the line of questioning regarding Mr. Assange and/or Guccifer.

Mr. Stone then displays an "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR) during 1:41 immediately after he says, "A fair amount. A substantial amount." An inward lip roll is a significant indicator that strong emotions are being suppressed.

Beginning at 2:19, a Journalist asks, "Is it still your view that - Russians had nothing to do with the hacks [inaudible] at the DNC or Mr. Podesta?"

Mr. Stone answers, "That is my belief - I subscribe to the view published in The Nation Magazine several weeks ago that the - the computer science seems to indicate, ah, an inside job..."

During 2:26 - 2:27, as he says "... I subscribe to the view ...", Mr. Stone covers his right eye, during an extended blink, and scratches his right eyebrow. This nonverbal cluster is strongly suggestive of deception.

Note also Mr. Stone's choice of words (one aspect of paralanguage). His answer was indirect. Rather than saying, "Yes", or "Yes, I do", or "Absolutely", or "One-hundred percent", or "That's what happened", or "That's the Truth" - or even "That's my belief". Instead, Mr. Stone used a non-contraction - "That is my belief." This along with his meandering and non-definitive response are also strongly suggestive of deception.

Another important tell is the rocking back-and-forth (lateral movement) Roger Stone displayed during this answer. This, in isolation, is a non-specific anxiety indicator.

Don't forget that multiple U.S. Intelligence organizations including the FBI, CIA, and NSA - all have independently concluded that Russia conducted the hacking of DNC - and it was Russia who also gave the stolen data to WikiLeaks.

Another important nonverbal signal was Mr. Stone's extremely frequent behavior of elevating up on his toes. Watch the video again - you will rarely see a better example of this dynamic. It betrays his significantly heightened adrenaline level during this short press conference. This begs the question, if Roger Stone was telling the truth after testifying before the House Intelligence Committee - why would his adrenaline be dramatically elevated?

This video is loaded with a myriad of nonverbal tells. What others did you see?

Body Language Analysis No. 4075: Equifax Chairman and CEO Richard F. Smith Steps Down After Massive Hack/Data Breach - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Earlier today, Richard F. Smith announced he will be "stepping down" as the Chairman and CEO of Equifax. This change comes after the company's massive data breach - historically, one of the largest hacks anywhere (143 million accounts). The fifty-seven year-old will not be taking a bonus. He will be staying on for three months as an "unpaid consultant" (a common MO in order to help replacements get "up to speed").

Equifax has come under significant criticism for multiple issues related to this failure of cybersecurity: their poor security (e.g., hiring a music major, Susan Mauldin, as Chief Security Officer), delaying informing the public of the breach for six weeks, the alleged selling of stock by several high-level executives prior to the disclosing the hack, and Equifax's attempt to make a profit from those seeking to protect their credit in the wake of the company's failures.

The above image of Richard F. Smith, and the close-up below, shows a classic fear response.

The most striking signal are his eyes. Specifically, his upper and lower eyelids are opened very widely - much wider than baseline. While it is common for people to deliberately open their eyes very widely for effect - such affectations are performed with the aid of the forehead muscles. But Smith's forehead is NOT contracted - his slight wrinkles are passive (normal for age) and not indicative of muscular contraction of the forehead muscles. This "Eyes Wide Open" display - together with a relaxed forehead, and his other facial displays, is an absolute classic fear expresssion.

Note also Mr. Smith's nostrils - they are mild-moderately flared. There's also accompanying mild tension in his "mustache area".

Chin-holding, when taken in isolation does not indicate fear - however, when it's displayed as part of a cluster with one's eyes widely opened, relaxed forehead, tension in the mustache area, and nostril flaring - such chin-holding is a "fear amplifier". Indeed, Smith's psyche very much wants to cover his mouth as part of his fear manifestation - but he's suppressing this action (barely).

Summary: Richard F. Smith, who announced his "retirement" from Equifax today, is displaying significant trepidation in this photo. If this image was taken after the hacking, his nonverbal behavior would strongly suggest he fears personal repercussions. In that case, it would imply there may be important facts with the events related to the Equifax Hack which are yet to be revealed.

In the absence of nonverbal skills, anything described as "Crisis Management" significantly amplifies one's liability.

Body Language Analysis No. 4074: Donald Trump Sends Robert Kraft a Message - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, President Trump offered up a message to his friend, Robert Kraft - New England Patriots owner. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this brief interview - and how Trump feels the NFL is responding to his idea that any players who don't stand for the National Anthem should be fired.

PRESIDENT TRUMP [beginning at 0:00]: I watched a little bit and I will say that there was tremendous solidarity for our flag and for our country.

JOURNALIST: Mr. President, your friend, Robert Kraft, said he was, "disappointed by what you said on Friday [inaudible]"

PRESIDENT TRUMP [over-talking]: Well that's okay. Look, he's gotta take his - he ah, he has to take his ideas and go with what he wants. I think it's very disrespectful to our country. I think it's very, very disrespectful to our flag. I like Bob very much - he's my friend. But - he gave me a Superbowl ring ago, right? So he's a f-, good friend of mine. But - ah,  and I want him to do what he wants to do, but - ...

During 0:18 - 0:19, President Trump moves his right middle finger from just above his right eye - posteriorly along his temple region as he says, "... to our country. I think ...". This is a classic example of what is known as a "Partial Emblematic Slip" - of which there are many varieties. To be blunt, Donald Trump - subconsciously - told Robert Kraft to "Fuck Off".

The "Partial" nomenclature is used here because the illustrator is not displayed in it's full-fledged, upright, held-high, in-front of one's body manner. Rather it's a horizontal, off to the side, and atypical display.

The term "Emblematic" is applied here due to the "Middle Finger" gesture (illustrator) is a meaning which is well-defined and near-universally recognized. In the nonverbal world, such symbols are known as "Emblems".

The "Slip" description tells us the subconscious nature with which this action is initiated. Occasionally, its user becomes conscious of this dynamic (or has an edge-of-consciousness awareness of it) once it's completed/nearly complete.

Now go back a few seconds and notice that during 0:13 - 0:14, upon hearing a question about Robert Kraft, President Trump then steps backward. This is a fantastic example of the nonverbal display of being "taken aback" - which signals the phenomenon of emotional processing. Notice also during this moment, the President stutters and takes longer to respond as he says, "... Look, he's gotta take his - he ah, he has to take his ideas ...". This is a strong indicator that he has strong feelings with regards to his relationship with Robert Kraft. Donald Trump's middle finger display 4-5 seconds later shows us his true feelings for the New England Patriots owner.

It's also important to note that Donald Trump rarely touches his face/neck/head while speaking - particularly on camera (much less so than most politicians or professional actors). Thus when he does occasionally commits such a faux pas - we can be sure his action is driven by strong emotions (which over-ride his normal suppression for facial touching).

Summary: Donald Trump flipped-off Patriots owner Robert Kraft yesterday. This subconsciously initiated nonverbal action was most likely driven by his feelings of being betrayed by Kraft. Along with 30 of the 32 NFL owners, Kraft openly and publicly addressed his disappointment in the President's recent comments.

Body Language Analysis No. 4073: Prince Harry and Melania Trump Meet in Canada for Invictus Games - Harry's Hand Signal - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Many are wondering about Prince Harry's and Melania Trump's meeting yesterday - particularly Harry's hand gesture.

The First Lady was in Toronto and met the Prince as part of the Invictus Games ("an international Paralympic-style multi-sport event, created by the Harry of Wales, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans" participate in Olympic-style athletic events).

A few seconds prior Prince Harry and the First Lady shook hands.

Then Prince Harry attempted to unbutton his jacket - but before he managed to do so - he posed for the image in question.

It's important to note that Harry's fingers and thumb were not flexed - but rather slipped beneath the left side of his jacket

When the middle and ring fingers are flexed and met with the thumb - simultaneously with the index finger (forefinger) and pinky finger extended - this configuration forms an emblem which - especially with an extended arm - has different meanings in different cultures and subcultures.

Some Mediterranean cultures make this gesture when confronted with unfortunate events - or even when such negative events are even mentioned. The "Sign of the Horns" may be given as an effort to ward off bad luck. In India, its use was first used by Gautama Buddha for a similar purpose - trying to prevent illness and demons.

Wicca culture may use this same hand gesture to evoke their horned god.

Some use it as a signal of the devil. This meaning is most notably used in heavy metal subculture - although some in these same groups will maintain it's used to protect against the devil.

In some Latin American regions as well as some Mediterranean countries - when this "Sign of the Horns" is directed at someone and wiggled back and forth - it is used as an offensive gesture as it implies cuckoldry.

Those who are fans of certain America football teams - such as the University of Texas Longhorns, use this hand illustrator to show enthusiasm and solidarity for their team.

While it's possible that Harry's gesture was deliberate - with a specific sub-cultural meaning, such as those discussed above - it was much more probable Harry's hand display was subconsciously driven by a strong emotion.

Numerous sources have reported that Harry is "not a fan" of President Trump. He has expressed these feelings more publicly since he announced his candidacy in June 2015. Prince Harry believes Donald Trump is a serious threat to human rights. It's also well known that, upon Lady Di's and Prince Charles' separation, Donald Trump aggressively pursued Diana - and reportedly "he gave her the creeps".

Prince Harry is impassioned for the Invictus Games, which he founded - and he strongly supports veterans and active military. Prince Harry is also diplomatic and polite. He routinely welcomes World leaders and, like his mother, represents the UK in a unifying and humanitarian manner. But he does not care for Donald Trump. And while he may not have formed similar opinions for the First Lady - such a meeting with her leaves him feeling "too close for comfort". Harry's feeling cognitive and emotional dissonance.

Note Harry's arm is directed across his lower abdomen - which reveals his momentary beta feelings in this otherwise alpha male. His two fingers and his thumb hiding beneath his jacket - amplify these uncomfortable emotional tones. He has to be there - but he doesn't want to be there - not with Melania - not President Trump's wife. Harry's being "the good soldier".

It's also important to point out that Harry just touched her - this was the hand that just shook hands with Melania. Moreover, his hand is positioning is pulling and pointing away from her - in a subconscious distancing maneuver. Most men want to be photographed with their jacket's buttoned - but unbutton those same jackets just prior to or upon sitting down (as did Harry). But Harry's hand moved away from Melania quickly. Sure - it was for a utilitarian and very valid reason - but subconsciously it was driven to do faster, sooner, awkwardly, and more extreme than it otherwise would have if he were being photographed with another public figure

Now, look at Harry's face. His upper lip is quite thinned, his "mustache area" is tensed, and his nostrils are flared. While it's not in this moment extreme - the Prince is suppressing anger.

In the moment captured in the image immediately above, Harry even momentarily displays bitterness-regret, with more than a bit of disgust.

Summary: Harry's Hand gesture signals his cognitive and emotional dissonance between meeting with Melania - whose husband he doesn't care for - and his desire and belief in promoting the Invictus Games. This is not a signal of a conspiracy - Harry's hand dynamic is behavioral.
