Body Language Analysis No. 3954: Donald Trump, "Covfefe", and a Facial Expression which Should Always Raise Red Flags - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

While we may never know what Donald Trump meant by "covfefe" in his tweet last night - the meaning of his body language in the moment above (close-up image below) is not up for debate.

Although his hair obscures a good share of his forehead, we can still see that his central forehead is contracted and drawn upward (an "elevated CFC").

Crucially, if a CFC is displayed, particularly an elevated CFC, one should immediately evaluate the status of the mouth. Note Trump's mouth is configured in a false smile. It's an act. Its overt insincerity is betrayed by the corners of his mouth vectored primarily laterally (rather than up) as well as its asymmetrical shape.

Whenever a CFC is seen in the presence of a "smile" - the "smile" always false - always insincere, and thus, with this cluster, the feelings being experienced in that moment fit into one of the following three (often overlapping) emotions:

1. Disbelief (frequently feigned)
2. Arrogance
3. Contempt

We all, every one of us, use this expression occasionally. Yet when a person uses this nonverbal cluster frequently it has a very high correlation with Sociopath behavior (Antisocial Personality Disorder).

Notice also, Trump's head and neck are contracted backward together with a simultaneous downward neck tilting (causing a "bunching up" of neck tissue and giving him a "double chin"). This is a signal of disbelief, and is rarely seen in isolation. Here it acts as a disbelief amplifier.

Summary: Whenever the Central Forehead is Contracted accompanied by a "smile" - the "smile" is always insincere - and indicates disbelief, arrogance, and/or contempt. When observed frequently, this behavior has a very high correlation with a sociopathic personality.

Body Language Analysis No. 3953: Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron meet in Versailles - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Yesterday, newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Versailles. And with the Russian standing on the same stage, President Macron was very blunt in his criticism of Putin saying, "I have always had an exemplary relationship with foreign journalists, but they have to be journalists. 'Russia Today' and 'Sputnik' were organs of influence and propaganda that spread counterfeit truths about me."

Macron also said that the use of chemical weapons in Syria would be a "red line", and, "would result in reprisals and an immediate response, at least where France is concerned."

Emmanuel Macron also openly criticized Russia's practice of labeling employees of Western nonprofits working in Russia as "Foreign Agents" as well as the severe abuse of the LGBT community in Chechnya.

Of course, Vladimir Putin is an alpha male. And he may indeed be, at least in terms of popular culture, THE prototypical alpha male. But like the rest of us, he is only human. Moreover, when President Putin is off Russian Soil, he routinely slips into more of a beta mode. And he's certainly not used to being openly criticized, on the World stage, in his presence.

With respect to their body language, note each man's hand-arm configuration. Macron's forward positioning is indicative of, and is transmitting - significantly higher confidence. Macron is on his home soil. Macron is asserting himself. Macron is Alpha. In contrast, Putin's posterior podium positioning is projecting tentativeness. His confidence is lower. Putin is being Beta. The nonverbal significance of this hand-arm positioning is particularly amplified here - when one is standing next to someone who's using the opposite stance.

Certainly one is to be cautioned about holding on to the lectern/podium too much - (regardless of where it is held) - for this practice (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier [MAP] surrogate) can backfire (in American politics, President Kennedy popularized holding the lectern, but it was because of pain he had from an old back injury - and he still didn't over-use this technique).

Summary: Although this example is but one moment, it exemplifies a larger pattern. Vladimir Putin, one of the most powerful men in World, when off of Russian soil, slips into a beta emotional tone. This phenomenon was spotlighted yesterday as Emmanuel Macron openly criticized Russia's practices while standing next to Putin.

Body Language Analysis No. 3952: Emmanuel Macron's Handshake with Donald Trump at NATO Summit - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Emmanuel Macron went on record yesterday regarding his handshake with Donald Trump at last week's NATO summit. The French President said, "My handshake with him, it's not innocent," and, "One must show that we won't make little concessions, even symbolic ones," as well as, "Donald Trump, the President of Turkey, or the President of Russia are of a mindset of power relations, which doesn't bother me. I don't believe in diplomacy of the public invective - but in bilateral dialogues. I don't let anything go. That's how one makes oneself respected."

In the image above we can see that Macron's jaw is jutting forward significantly. This "Jaw Jut" indicates an adrenaline surge and a strong mental focus - and it also correlates with anger. As the newly elected leader implied, his extra-effort handshake with Trump was very deliberate and planned (Macron's forward and lateral position on his chair, as seen below, gave him extra leverage).

President Macron's mid-face, specifically his "mustache area" is very taut. His nostrils are also flared. This nonverbal cluster signals disgust with a minor element of anger.

A few seconds later we see Donald Trump's fingers straighten out in a signal of acquiescence. This is very much akin to a theatrical wrestler slapping the mat, thus nonverbally screaming, "I give up. You won."

While Trump may be in some pain in this moment, his facial expression does not indicate discomfort (What crucial change should we see on his face, if he were experiencing significant pain?). Rather, Trump's expression is one of pure disgust (unlike Macron's mixed emotions). The French President is maintaining his jaw jut and disgust - along with a new element of contempt with a partially suppressed smile. This nonverbal cluster (combination) signals Macron's schadenfreude.

Summary: Donald Trump very much acquiesced in his recent handshake with Emmanuel Macron. Both men displayed disgust toward the other. Macron momentarily also felt some anger, contempt, and schadenfreude.

Body Language Analysis No. 3951: Angela Merkel, Donald Trump, the G7 Summit, and The Paris Agreement - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

This image (and the close up below) of Donald Trump and Angela Merkel was taken at the recent G7 Summit in Taormina, Sicily, Italy.

Angela Merkel's expression is very much worth nuancing. Note that her central forehead is contracted and elevated along with her inner (medial) eyebrows. There is also significant tension of her lower eyelids. From a nonverbal perspective, when an Elevated Central Forehead Contraction (Elevated CFC) occurs - it's of profound significance. However, the CFC must always be correlated with "what the rest of the face is doing" - particularly the mouth.

We can see that, simultaneously, Merkel's jaw is "hanging open" - in what is often colloquially referred to as a "Slack Jaw". Notice too, that it's not widely open as it is displayed during sincere surprise, rather only mild-to-moderately so.

It's also important to point out that none of her teeth are visible.

Another detail which correlates with the sincerity of this moment (and the "Slackness" of the jaw) is that her jaw (mandible) is retracted backward (posteriorly). This gives the appearance of a (momentary) over-bite (less noticeable, however, because no teeth are visible). The value of this subtle yet significant finding cannot be overstated when assessing sincerity and emotional shock.

This is the face of emotional shock and emotional processing. Chancellor Merkel is feeling a form of grief and emotional pain. She's having difficulty wrapping her logical-rational mind around her emotions in her response to what Trump is telling her.

Summary: Angela Merkel is bewildered and astonished at what Donald Trump is saying to her. This is not political posturing - rather her emotions are sincere.

Body Language Analysis No. 3950: Donald Trump, Angela Merkel, and Donald Tusk at the G7 - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

In this image, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Council President Donald Tusk (his left side to camera) are shown speaking with President Trump at the 2017 G7 Summit.

Note the configuration of Donald Trump's mouth and lips. This is a variation of a "Lip Purse", and more specifically, a "Forward Lip Purse".

A forward lip purse is a very common (and rarely understood) nonverbal display. It signals disagreement. To nuance this further - this particular flavor of disagreement is not always fully verbalized, in fact, a portion or even all of it is frequently kept secret. Thus when you see a forward lip purse, the accompanying spoken words are often misleading or deliberately deceptive. Therefore this particular nonverbal sign is also indicative of a clandestine plan.

Summary: When you see a forward lip purse, you should have a strong suspicion of deception. Do not trust the person's words - for they are planning, but not sharing. Protect your flank.

Body Language Analysis No. 3949: Donald Trump Shoves Montenegro's PM Dusko Markovic at NATO HQ - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today, while at NATO Headquarters, Donald Trump shoved his way through a crowd of other heads-of-state. What follows is a partial nonverbal analysis of this incident.

As Donald Trump grabs the upper arm of Montenegro's Prime Minister, Dusko Markovic, Trump's expression is that of Disgust.

Then as Trump pulls and then pushes Markovic, the Montenegrin is startled while American President's face continues expressing disgust.

Not only is this is a dramatic violation of interpersonal (intimate) space, but it's an aggressive physical act, which in most professional contexts would be classified as a form of harassment or even assault.

Dusko Markovic managed to respond to Donald Trump's personal space violation by quickly positioning his hand against Trump's lower back. In this moment he's "counter-pushing" Trump away from him. It's an analog behavior of "punching back".

Although it's only a limited, lateral view, Dalia GrybauskaitÄ—'s expression (the President of Lithuania) on the far right side of this image can be seen. Her mouth is partially open (slack-jawed) and her forehead and eyebrows are elevated. She's in disbelief. This is an expression of emotional shock and emotional processing.

Note how Trump's jaw is jutted forward. This action is significant for the adrenaline surge he's experiencing from pushing his way through a crowd of people.

Dalia GrybauskaitÄ— is increasingly shocked.

Dusko Markovic is smiling-starting to laugh.

While Dusko Markovic is suppressing simultaneous laughter and disgust, Trump performs a false-adjustment of his suit jacket. It's an example of what is known as an "Alpha-Upregulator". Very much like a gorilla beating his chest, he's affirming to himself and everyone else he is THE alpha - and that he has put them in their collective (beta) places.

Although we don't know what she's saying, we see President Dalia GrybauskaitÄ— gesture with her palm-up. This illustrator is, generally speaking, not alpha, but beta behavior. However, depending on the other simultaneous nonverbals and verbals signals - it can be an alpha-beta hybrid. While it may involve an "asking" or a suggestion to "consider" - it's friendly, disarming, and projects a symbolic "please" emotional tone. Thus it's rapport building and engenders diplomacy.

President Trump often displays the double palms up - however, he over-uses it in terms of both frequency and in amplitude ('performed' a hyperbolic nature).

Trump retorts with a palm-down index finger pointing/jabbing.  This illustrator is hyper-alpha, hyper-aggressive, and universally offensive in virtually every culture in the World.

Trump then rotates his torso away from President GrybauskaitÄ— (Dissing/Disrespecting behavior) - but then fluxes downward to a beta emotional state as he configures his hands in a fig-leaf (aka genital guarding) position. A part of his psyche knows he has over-stepped, thus he is (subconsciously and momentarily) down-regulating his aggressiveness.

Summary: Donald Trump's shoving and pushing his way through a group of other World leaders at the NATO HQ today is a classic example of "out-of-context" behavior (e.g., This was not a contest, nor was it a platform for physicality). Trump displayed quintessential hyper-alpha body language, violations of interpersonal (intimate) space, and aggressive narcissistic behavior

Body Language Analysis No. 3948: The Manchester Bomber, Nonverbal Communication, Threat Assessment, and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

The image above (and the cropped close-up below) shows one of the few currently available photos of Salman Abedi - the alleged perpetrator of the recent bombing during at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England. Tragically, 22 victims were killed and at least 120 others were injured.

Note the expression on Abedi's face - it's a mixture of both Contempt and Disgust. The elevated "snarl" appearance on HIS left side (e.g. the well-defined nasolabial fold [the furrow running from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth]), is particularly emblematic of Contempt. His mid-face tightness (in the "mustache area") is consistent with both of these emotions (although also more accentuated on his left - ergo contempt). His "droopy eyelids", while perhaps longstanding (e.g., congenital ptosis) - here serve as an amplifier of contempt and disgust. Abedi's backward head tilt also acts to intensify each of these emotions.

As human beings, we all occasionally feel - and thus display each of these feelings - but hopefully not very often or too intensely.

However, those who make such facial expressions frequently have a dramatically increased likelihood of having impulse control disorder (colloquially known as a "short temper"). Therefore in the context of significant disagreements, these individuals will tend to use physical force and outright violence to solve problems - rather than dialog, diplomacy, and reason.

Moreover, if we evaluate the real-time behavior and/or social media behavior record of the people who perpetrate terrorist activity or mass-shootings - we will observe a dramatic frequency of disgust and contempt - as well as anger (often there exists a mixture of these emotions)

With this in mind, it's not surprising that a senior person at the mosque which Abedi attended (the Manchester Islamic Centre aka Didsbury Mosque) reported that Salman Abedi looked at him with a "face of hate" after the imam gave a sermon denouncing terrorism and preaching against ISIS.

Summary: Careful observation of Nonverbal Behavior plays a crucial role in Threat Assessment and preventing violence. The perpetrator of the 2017 Manchester Bombing, Salman Abedi, is yet another example of an individual who exhibited such body language red flags. And while certainly not all of those who display chronic expressions of anger, contempt, and/or disgust will perpetrate terrorist activity - they will virtually always have impulse control disorder (thus you don't want to date them, hire them, be hired by them, vote for them, etc.).

My deepest condolences for all those who have suffered in this horrific event.

Body Language Analysis No. 3947: Benjamin Netanyahu's reaction to Donald Trump's statement, "I never mentioned the Word or Name 'Israel' " - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday, while standing next to Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump said, "I never mentioned the Word or Name 'Israel' - never mentioned it, during that conversation - they were all saying I did - so ya had another story wrong. Never mentioned the word 'Israel'..."

President Trump was, of course, referring to his recent meeting with Sergey Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak in the Oval Office. It's alleged that Trump disclosed classified information to the Russian Foreign Minister and Ambassador - and in so doing also, directly or indirectly, also revealed the source(s) of the classified information.

Notice as President Trump said, "... during that conversation ...", President Netanyahu was turning toward Trump while jutting his jaw forward. A "Jaw Jut" virtually always indicates a surge in adrenaline.

When it comes to his conduct on camera, President Netanyahu is probably the most experienced and skilled high-profile head-of-state in the World. Yet we still see this body language red flag. It begs the question: Why was Netanyahu experiencing an adrenaline surge?

The Israeli leader was also simultaneously displaying an "Inward Lip Roll". An inward lip roll (ILR) is a sign that the subconscious/edge-of-consciousness trying to suppress strong feelings (both from being expressed outwardly - but also internally). What emotion was Netanyahu suppressing?

During this same nonverbal cluster, Netanyahu was also blinking with prolonged duration. This is a psychological blocking behavior - indicating he strongly disapproves of what he is thinking, seeing, and/or hearing.

Summary: President Benjamin Netanyahu's nonverbal behavior during President Trump's statement indicates he had strong opposition to the US leader making such an open declaration.

Body Language Analysis No. 3946: Melania Swats Away Donald Trump's Hand as They Arrive in Israel - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

President Donald Trump arrived in Tel Aviv earlier today. For the next two days, he's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.

At the airport, as Donald Trump and Melania were walking down the red-carpet welcome way, the President reached his left hand out and behind him in an effort to hold the First Lady's hand.

But Melania was having none of it. She slapped it away. There are some who have (and will continue to say) that this was not what it looked like - a very clear, deliberate and public dissing. You can watch the video (and again in slow motion) and see for yourself.

From a body language perspective, what Donald Trump does immediately after Melania's refusal, gives us a glimpse into his psyche. He reaches the same jilted hand up and the adjusts his tie. This is a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) surrogate (the tie, in this context, is an extension of the body). When viewed in isolation, this False Tie Adjust is a signal of anxiety.

Yet we nuance this nonverbal further ...

More specifically, the False Tie Adjustment is a signal to one's psyche that the alpha qualities need to be dialed-up (and the beta feelings must be turned down). Thus it's one variety of what is called an alpha up-regulator. At this moment, Donald (or anyone else, were they in his shoes) feels much more beta than he wants to (or is used to) feeling. He's far below his emotional baseline (particularly in such an extremely public setting).

Moreover, when his hand was rebuffed, he felt the immediate need to hold something else - and, although his tie didn't need adjusting, he held it instead.

He then performed a similar maneuver on the left side of his suit jacket.

Summary: Melania Trump swatted away the President's hand today at the airport in Tel Avia when he was trying to hold her hand. Donald Trump, upon being dissed, understandably felt anxiety - and this knocked him into a beta emotional state. Although many have and will deny what obviously occurred, the President's body language actions immediately after this very public rejection verify his momentary emotional state.

Body Language Analysis No. 3945: Donald Trump's Anxiety - Nonverbal and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

This image was taken recently of Donald Trump in the White House. Below is a cropped, close-up view of the same photo.

As a nonverbal exercise, while alone in a quiet room, replicate the President's expression. Proceed in the following order:

1.   Thrust your jaw mildly-moderately forward
2.   Tighten the back (posterior) portion of your jaw muscles (masseter)
3.   Hold your upper and lower teeth about 3-4 mm apart (~1/8 - 1/6 inch)
4.   Draw the corners your mouth inward - pursing your lips ever so slightly -
but don't push your lips forward - just pull them together
5.   Push your tongue forward, touching with moderate pressure
on the back sides of your front, lower teeth
6.   Lower the entire width of both of your eyebrows
7.   Slightly elevate your central forehead - this will pull up your inner (medial) eyebrows,
while leaving your side (lateral) eyebrows lowered (as per no. 6)
8.   Look down to your left
9.   Fixate your gaze at something in the middle distance (e.g., 3-6 meters away)
10. Slightly defocus your eyes
11. Stand up
12. Bend (flex) your neck forward about 15 - 20 degrees
13. Slightly bend your upper back forward ('hunching your back' - in a kyphosis-like rounding)
14. Slightly elevate your shoulders and foreshorten your neck

Now review to be sure you're performing all 14 items. What is the emotion that best describes how you feel?

Adopting this combination of postures and facial configurations will make you feel anxious, hesitant - and quite beta. Thus, not only does a worried person subconsciously morph his or her body language to reflect the way they are feeling in that moment - but the reverse also is true - adopting these nonverbal positions will make you truly feel the emotions that your body is signaling to your brain. The same is true for any feeling. You have the control panel. You're at the helm. You're steering the ship.
