Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3678: Donald Trump's Trip to Mexico - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Today Donald Trump visited Mexico and met with President Enrique Peña Nieto. Both men gave speeches and conducted a brief joint press conference.

From a body language perspective, when Enrique Peña Nieto was speaking, Donald Trump stood back - away from the lectern. His feet were fairly close together while his hands were positioned in a Fig Leaf configuration. While there are certainly times when a head of state (or any leader) should display such nonverbal signals - this occasion was NOT one of them. It's always important and to show respect for another leader and behave contextually - but in doing so one should never appear to acquiesce or look weak. Donald Trump's body language was quite beta during President Peña Nieto's speech - projecting emotional discomfort and low confidence.

It would have been to his advantage if Trump had held his arms and hands at his sides. If is hands were loosely clasped behind his back, this would have also been much better than a fig leaf (although if held for too long behind the back in such a position [depending somewhat upon the accompanying facial expressions] - this may project feelings of arrogance and condescending emotional tones).

Trump should have also stood closer to the lectern - standing back as he did sends disengaging feelings. By doing so, he also puts himself at a lower status than President Peña Nieto - AND lower than a presidential candidate. This principle would be true regardless of his country of origin. Standing closer to the lectern would also allow a more neutral place to put his hands. Holding the sides of the lectern, toward the back (closer to him) is a good alpha-beta hybrid position. When it then became his turn to then speak, sliding his hands forward (toward the audience) would be one way to up-regulate his alpha persona (although holding on to the lectern for extended periods is rarely recommended. Open gestures ["Illustrators"] should be virtually always be employed).

Moreover, Trump was absolutely standing with his feet too close together. This also down-regulates his status and makes him appear weak, beta and "standing at attention". His feet should have been about a shoulder's width apart.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3677: Chris Brown's Pre-Arrest Instagram Rant - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Chris Brown was arrested yesterday after a nine hour ordeal at his home with police. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and has been booked and released after posting bail.

Prior to his arrest (but after the police arrived at his home) the singer, songwriter, actor, dancer posted a video on Instagram. A good portion of this video is included as part of the above news clip.

From a nonverbal perspective, Chris Brown's Instagram rant provides a good example of one variety of an emotional display of frustration. Frustration is an amalgam of anger and disappointment - signaling anxiety experienced when there's a disparity between what occurs vs. what is expected. Of course, as observers of body language, we don't have to agree with the point of view of those who display these feelings, but to those experiencing them (as with any emotion) - they feel just as valid as our own.

Note Brown's extreme head and neck motion - with these he is making relatively high amplitude, moderate-to-high frequency sweeping and rocking motions. This nonverbal behavior is highly characteristic for frustration.

Moreover the frequent removal and repositioning of his hood (or similar behavior if had been wearing a hat) acts as a frustration amplifier. This same phenomenon is exemplified by (and overlaps with) a firm gripping and grabbing of the top and/or back of the head.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3676: Colin Kaepernick Says He Be Sitting Down During the National Anthem - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTO)

It is of course now common knowledge that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is refusing to stand during the National Anthem before opening ceremonies of NFL football games. Although Kaepernick has exercised this civil disobedience for entire 2016 preseason - his action was not first publicly noted until he did so while in uniform before a game versus the Green Bay Packers on 26 August 2016.

In the video above, beginning at 1:01 Colin Kaepernick continues, "You can become a cop in six months and don't have to have - the same amount of training as a cosmetologist. That's, that's insane. I mean - someone that's holding a curling iron has more education and more training - than people that have a gun and are going out on the street to protect us."

Throughout much of this statement, Kaepernick is projecting two strong emotions. The image below was capture during 1:09 as he says, "... insane ...".

Note Kaepernick's right mustache area is contracted (tightened) and elevated along with the right corner of his mouth. His right nostril is also flared. Simultaneously - we also can see the incredulous elevation of the QB's left eyebrow.

Summary: Colin Kaepernick is expressing both a contempt and disbelief toward the governing institutions in what he feels is a significant lack of training of police officers.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3674: Drake Presents Rihanna with Vanguard Award - 2016 Video Music Awards - MTV - Body Language & Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

At the recent MTV Video Music Awards, Drake, a long time close friend, presented the Vanguard Award to Rhianna. His intro and background story telling were heartfelt (and they are now strongly rumored to be a romantic couple). Rhianna is, for the most part, a very alpha personality. Thus as with most entertainers - she often seeks the limelight. Yet, when another person is touting your skills and accomplishments - it is (and thus feels) fundamentally different vs. when such alpha behavior is self-initiated. And in such scenarios the nonverbal behavior is very different as well. What follows are highlights some of the key body language moments of this interaction.

0:46

Here Rihanna's hands are clasped behind her back. This particular body language is high alpha as well as confidence building - yet she did not hold this configuration for long.

0:54

Here Rihanna is feeling slightly embarrassed. Her arms crossed - and the fact that her hands hidden is particularly telling.

1:06

Hand rubbing and/or scratching the back of the neck is a classic display of "Honest Anxiety".

2:06

Touching or rubbing the base of the front of the neck/the top of the sternum (manubrium) is a classic anxiety tell and projects higher beta emotional tones (definitely NOT an alpha maneuver).

2:33

A variation of the "Fig Leaf" (aka "Genital Guarding") is another very common beta body language. It's unusual for an alpha dominant person to maintain this configuration for long (of course even alphas have beta moments). When the fingers are intertwined (as is seen here), it's less beta (more alpha) than if one hand was placed in front of the other (but if still covering the lower abdomen/genital area).

3:03

The opposite wrist hold is another beta position. For the most part, the further up the opposite arm it's being held, the more beta the nonverbal signal becomes (depending of course on the other body language and facial expressions simultaneously being projected).

Summary: Although she's an alpha personality, in this presentation we see excellent nonverbal examples of Rihanna's emotional dissonance (e.g, being proud fluctuating with feeling humbled [and sometimes embarrassed]). Such alpha-beta flux behavior is typical for a person in this or a similar settings - who has moderate to high baseline levels of sincerity and empathy.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3673: Anthony Weiner, Huma Abedin separate after Sexting Scandal - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

After Anthony Weiner's third sexting scandal, Huma Abedin announced today the couple is separating. Weiner is a former seven term U.S. congressman and has sought multiple mayoral candidacies of New York City. Ms. Abedin is vice chairwoman of Hillary Clinton's 2016 campaign for President and has also served as the Deputy Chief of Staff to Hillary Clinton during her term as U.S. Secretary of State.

The image above and the close up below were taken on the red carpet at the 2016 New York City Metropolitan Ball.

From a body language perspective, we can see Anthony Weiner standing with his arms and hands in a "Fig Leaf" configuration. This is sometimes referred to as "Genital Guarding". While there are certainly occasions when a person should use this arm-hand nonverbal signal - such as when standing next to high level clergy, during a wedding or funeral ceremony, when next to a person of high power (particularly when next to them on stage, TV, etc.) - and in these settings it projects deference and respect. Yet in the vast majority of settings the fig leaf should be avoided. Here it sends strong signals of low confidence and low emotional comfort (contrast Weiner's low-energy, beta stance with the high-energy, alpha body language of the police officer in the background).

When we evaluate Mr. Weiner's facial nonverbals, we can see can see strong signals of emotional dissonance. His mouth is forming a "Blocked Inward Lip Roll". An inward lip roll is a common facial signal seen when the subconscious is trying to suppress strong emotions from growing further. It's also used to avoid a more full outward expression from crescendoing. Here the typical inward lip roll cannot be fully formed because of Weiner's jaw clenching. His tighten jaw muscles can be easily seen and is further highlighted by the dimpling on his chin. Note also the extreme tension of his "mustache area" as well as his dramatic flaring of his nostrils. There is also significant tension of his lower eyelids.

Conclusion: Anthony Weiner displays significant emotional dissonance. His face projects anger and frustration while his fig leaf hand position is an attempt to very literally cover up what he has otherwise inadvertently made very public.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3672: Jessica Alba, Swass, Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Last week Jessica Alba was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. And although she's an accomplished actor, when "Jessica is just being Jessica" - she not quite as skilled at suspending our disbelief. The same is true for virtually all actors.

One particularly good example of this phenomenon is Alba's "smile" - for throughout much of this video segment her smile is insincere.

The lower teeth should not be exposed during a sincere smile (aka Duchenne Smile). There are exceptions to this however - such as when crescendoing to or decrescendoing from sincere laughter (fully expressed sincere laughter typically does display the lower teeth, but NOT during sincere smiles), with a downward directed camera angle, or when the person is tilting their head and neck forward or if the observer is significantly taller. Other than in these scenarios - the bottom teeth should not be exposed with smiles of sincerity.

During this variety of insincere smile (social smile) the corners of the mouth are vectored laterally (toward the sides) rather than being directed primarily upward. This allows the lower teeth to be uncovered.

Another telltale signal of insincerity seen here is Jessica's jaw jut. During sincere smiles as well in the midst of sincere laughter - the jaw is retracted (pulled inward) - NOT jutting outward as is displayed in these examples.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3671: Trump's and Pence's Tweets - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

Donald Trump has once again landed in trouble with his tweets - in what many are saying is attempt to capitalize on the tragic death of Dwayne Wade's cousin in an effort to gain the African-American vote. From a nonverbal perspective, Trump's tweets are also alienating the electorate.

The images above and below are those which Trump has chosen for his Twitter page.

In the photo above Trump's expression is indicative primarily of disgust with an element of contempt. In his individual image below, Mr. Trump is projecting critical evaluation and contempt along with some anger.

Governor Mike Pence's expression is an amalgam of disgust, critical evaluation, anger in addition to clandestine disagreement/clandestine plan.

Are these emotions that both Mr. Trump and Governor Pence feel toward Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton? Probably - or at least they would have you believe such to be true.

Will these emotions help to build and solidify their political base? To fair degree this is true.

Will the feelings being projected here help to win over the swing voters? No - they will absolutely not for these are rapport destroying emotions.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3670: Paul LePage's Voicemail Rant - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On Thursday, Maine Governor Paul LePage left a voice mail on State Representative Drew Gattine's voice mail and invited him to make it public.

LePage said (audio recording above), “Mr. Gattine, this is Gov. Paul Richard LePage. would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you c***sucker. I want to talk to you. I want you to prove that I’m a racist. I’ve spent my life helping black people and you little son-of-a-bitch, socialist c***sucker. You … I need you to, just friggin. I want you to record this and make it public because I am after you. Thank you.

Later that day, LePage told some reporters, “When a snot-nosed little guy from Westbrook calls me a racist, now I’d like him to come up here because, tell you right now, I wish it were 1825. And we would have a duel, that’s how angry I am, and I would not put my gun in the air, I guarantee you, I would not be (Alexander) Hamilton. I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he’s been in this Legislature to help move the state forward.

Drew Gattine then went on record Thursday saying that he never called LePage a racist, explaining “What I said to the television reporter today is that the kind of racially charged comments the governor made are not at all helpful in solving what the real problem is,”

Friday morning the Governor walked-back his statement regarding a duel and issued a non-apology apology for the people of Maine hearing the voicemail, but not to Mr. Gattine. A portion of the Governor's Friday statement is included in the video above from 1:38 - 1:51. Throughout this short video clip Gov. LePage displays dramatic displays of disgust. The image below was captured during 1:46.

Summary: Paul LePage certainly has disgust for Drew Gattine. It's important to note that the nonverbal example shown above was not however recorded during his voicemail or his subsequent duel "wish" - but rather during his explanation of the incident to reporters.

Physical threats, even those issued in hypothetical scenarios or in alleged joking, should not be readily dismissed. Moreover threats to commit bodily harm when accompanied by nonverbal displays of contempt, disgust or anger - are red flags, often not purely metaphorical and should be taken very seriously.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3669: Jordan Spieth, Bill Murray and the Asymmetrical Smile - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier this week golfing phenomenon Jordan Spieth was a guest on The Tonight Show. He was telling Jimmy Fallon a funny story about golfing with Bill Murray. From a body language perspective Mr. Spieth provides a fantastic example of nonverbal behavior commonly displayed - yet rarely discussed.

Jordan Spieth displays an asymmetrical smile throughout a good portion of this video segment. Nonverbal novices will say that asymmetrical smiles are not true smiles - and they would be correct a good percentage of the time - yet certainly not always. Spieth's smile is absolutely sincere.

Note Spieth's relaxed, noncontracted forehead muscles, his partially closed eyelids, the temporary concave-up furrows in his lower eyelids and, although this is more prominent on his left - Jordan's upward directed cheek muscles. We can see in some of the frames Spieth's lower teeth - because he is of course speaking while smiling, due to the camera angle and his slightly forward tilted head/neck.

As the mouth component of Spieth's smile grows, we see it become more symmetrical. It's also important to note that simultaneously the degree to which his eyelids are closing increases - also amplifying his smile.

Summary: Sincere smiles (aka Duchenne Smiles), as they crescendo, may often begin asymmetrically - but will increase in symmetry as the smile grows. This also occurs in the reverse direction - as the smile wanes.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3668: Donald Trump, Nigel Farage and The Brexit - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEOS, PHOTOS)

Yesterday Donald Trump introduced the UK's Brexit leader during a campaign event in Jackson, Mississippi. Nigel Farage is now Stumping for Trump.

It's always a major body language faux pas when the person whom you're introducing is approaching the lectern 180 degrees from where you think.

It also is bad form to have a microphone positioned such that it obstruct a large portion of your guest's face.

Nigel Farage was a guest on Good Morning Britain the day after the Brexit vote (24 June 2016). On that occasion Piers Morgan compared Mr. Farage to Donald Trump and asked Farage if he'd be speaking with Trump on his visit to Scotland. Mr. Farage then proceeded to distance himself both verbally and nonverbally from the American candidate.

Note Farage during 1:06 as he pulls his head, neck and torso backwards in his chair and moves his hands beneath the desk. Farage also taps his right ankle in an anxiety display during 1:07 - 1:09. This combined behavior of whole body withdraw, hand-hiding and ankle-tapping is a strong body language cluster indicating that Nigel Farage does not at all want to be compared with Donald Trump.

The image immediately above was captured during 1:18. Here we see Farage's right eyebrow raised in incredulity at being compared with Donald Trump.

Mr. Farage then displays incredulous laughter with overt facial blushing as he says, "I've been compared to many things over the years, but not Donald Trump as yet, but thanks - thank you for that - It's a bit early in the day for that sort of thing ...

Summary: On 24 June 2016, Nigel Farage distanced himself from and resented being compared to Donald Trump ... and yet in the ensuing weeks something has changed Farage's forebrain.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3664: Benjamin Netanyahu, Viktor Yanukovych and Vladimir Putin - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (PHOTOS)

These two images demonstrate a stark contrast between a man who is beholden and another who is not.

The image above was taken shortly after Viktor Yanukovych was removed from power as the President of Ukraine. He then fled to Russia where this image was taken shortly thereafter. From a body language perspective note the angle of Yanukovych's upper legs and the relative distance between his knees and compare these to Vladimir Putin's. Moreover notice the toe-in configuration (aka pigeon-toe) of Mr. Yanukovych versus the relatively wide-splayed angle of Mr. Putin's feet.

Now compare these nonverbal clusters to the image below where Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is meeting with President Putin - also on Russian Soil. Although the angle of Mr. Putin's thighs are also wider than Netanyahu's, the disparity between the two men is not nearly as dramatic as the above scenario. Notice as well the angle of Mr. Netanyahu's feet - for they are not toed-in as are Mr. Yanukovych's.

Summary: While there are other nonverbal signals being displayed in these images, we can say conclusively thatViktor Yanukovych's emotional tone is beta and submissive to Vladimir Putin. Mr. Yanukovych acquiesces to what he views as Mr. Putin's relative alpha status by the manner in which he's sitting. Benjamin Netanyahu however, does not concede status to President Putin and views himself to be Putin's equal. Yanukovych is projecting a low emotional comfort and lower confidence while Netanyahu is emotionally comfortable and of higher confidence.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3663: Olympic Wrestler Frank Molinaro gets bitten by Ukraine's Andriy Kvyatkovskyy - Body Language and Emotional Intelligence (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Now here's something you don't see every day - biting in wrestling.

Despite the fact that he was caught on camera biting his American opponent, and that per international rules biting is 'an act of flagrant misconduct and, on the first occurrence the individual shall be disqualified from competition', Ukrainian wrestler Andriy Kvyatkovskyy was not disqualified in his quarterfinal match against Frank Molinaro. The American did however go on to win the match.

What follows is a very telling nonverbal moment of Kvyatkovskyy's.

Here is a screen-capture of the act.

As Molinaro calls to an official while accusing his opponent, Kvyatkovskyy immediately buries his face in shame beneath his left upper arm.

Here we see it from another angle.

A moment later Kvyatkovskyy displays this MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) once again. MAPs are seen during moments of increased anxiety. In this context, this repeated body language gesture is profoundly telling. Covering the face and in particular the eyes (diminishing eye contact with the referee) during an accusation is a strong indication of guilt.

Conclusion: While wresting in the Rio 2016 Olympics, Andriy Kvyatkovskyy bit his opponent Frank Molinaro and in so doing he felt immediate shame. This nonverbal display is also a signal of his guilt.
