Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3389: Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama meet in Paris - Body Language Faux Pas (PHOTO)

Whenever Vladimir Putin is not on Russian soil - his demeanor changes significantly. In such settings, the Russian President acquiesces and assumes much less of an alpha role than what, for him, is typical. Today at The United Nations Conference on Climate Change was no exception.

One of the cardinal rules of body language that the majority of people (including those whom fancy themselves as "leaders") will routinely break - is proper eye contact during a handshake.

Note that at their greeting in Paris, Putin's left hand is grasping Barack Obama's right elbow. This is a very common nonverbal maneuver used by alpha personalities and particularly politicians in an effort to increase their alpha relative to others peers and near-peers (and most of them over-use it). Yet any alpha Putin adds here is more than negated by Vladimir's lack of eye contact.

During a handshake is one very crucial time when increased eye contact is expected - and extremely conspicuous when absent. Specifically, not maintaining eye contact for few seconds of the hand contact is also fundamental mistake. The two should be nonverbal components should be temporally linked.

What are the other common mistakes made during handshakes?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3388: Donald Trump, Duplicitous Expressions and "politely" Removing a Protester - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump gave us a textbook example of one type of an "Insincere Smile" while speaking in Sarasota on Saturday. In fact, for the businessman-turned-politician, this particular nonverbal is a very common one.

At 0:36 (in above video) Trump begins, "You see how diplomatic I've become? [pause] Right?"

The vast majority of the time, a unilateral smile is insincere - and this example is not one of the exceptions (Do you know how to differentiate these?).

Note how the right corner (Trump's right) of his mouth is down-turned, while his left side is vectored upward. This is a classic duplicitous (false) smile (yet not all one-sided smiles signify the same motives). This particular expression signals a disparity from what is being spoken vs. that which is thought-felt. Anytime the body language is saying one thing - and the verbal language is saying another - it's the nonverbal messages which are telling the truth.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3387: Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, The Graham Norton Show and Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy were guests recently on The Graham Norton Show. Talk shows (particularly ones like Norton's, where the questions tend to be more embarrassing) are fantastic forums in which to study body language - for although actors are paid to, in effect, lie to us (when they are acting) - when they are not "in character", they are equal to us non-actors when it comes to "leaking" their true thought-emotions - if you're knowledgeable of nonverbal nuance.

Radcliffe is particularly mortal when it comes to telling us what he's really thinking-feeling. Below are discussed two very telling, yet often overlooked nonverbal signals.

Norton (beginning at 0:01): "We know, Daniel Radcliffe, you have a reputation for being lovely with fans, very sweet, you give your time, very, freely, to them. But, I read with interest, that you are starting to toughen up now - you're being a little more discerning, with your fans."

Radcliffe: "Ummm..."

[audience laughter as Radcliffe scratches his lower leg and slightly falsely adjusts his sock]

Norton: "Daniel?"

Radcliffe: "What do you mean? Wha -, what do you mean?"

Scratching at one's sock/lower leg is a general anxiety indicator. Despite being on camera and stage very often, Daniel Radcliffe's anxiety is significant.

Although he appears to pull up his sock at the very end of his scratch, this is not a true "false sock adjust" signal. When a man or boy (although occasionally a woman or girl) bends over and pulls-up one or both socks - it also indicates some level of anxiety - but more importantly the false sock adjust demonstrates an up-regulation of alpha qualities. The psyche is dialing down the beta while dialing-up the alpha characteristics. It's crucial to note that the false sock adjust (typically a pulling-up of the sock) has very little, if any scratching associated with it.

Beginning at 1:37, Norton continues: "But, but apparently, Rupert Grint is even worse than you."

Radcliffe: "Rupert - I don't know the details of this at all - but Rupert ended up at somebody's house one night - just from like, continuing to say, 'Yes' to things."

McAvoy's facial expression response is a classic one of incredulity. Note this is what occurred immediately after Radcliffe's statement regarding Rupert Grint. McAvoy's central forehead is contracted (CFC) along with his inner eyebrows being elevated. Of profound importance here is his mouth is displaying a partial (false) smile. This facial cluster is one of the classic expressions of disbelief (Do you know the others?). Depending on the additional nonverbals with which it is clustered, this expression can also indicate what other emotions?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3386: Lady Steals from KID! Black Friday 2015 - Body Language of Assault (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today in Saginaw, Michigan - "Black Friday" behavior (otherwise known as wanton assault) was exhibited once again - and captured on video.

In this first image, you can see a woman grabbing a box from a girl's arms. She then tries to do the same to the little girl's (presumed) mother. Here, the resolution is low and facial detail cannot well discerned.

In this subsequent frame, less than a second later, the perpetrator can be seen displaying two distinct nonverbal signals:

1. Inward Lip Roll

2. Jaw Jut

Both the inward lip roll (ILR) and the jaw jut are strongly correlative with facial expressions seen in during assault behaviors - whether it's undertaken with fists, feet, knives or firearms. Very often these can give a few seconds warning prior to the act of physical aggression - which, if heeded, will help to protect oneself from injury or death.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3385: Adele, "Hello" and SNL - Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Last weekend Adele was a guest on Saturday Night Live. Just after singing Hello she displayed a cluster of nonverbal signals which, when you see them - will ring familiar. She juts out her tongue, crosses her eyes and lowers her body height (primarily via a knee bend). Of these three components, the tongue jut is the more common one (although here they convey the same thought-feelings).

Many would call this a variety of a "goofy" or "silly" face. And although these signs are primarily subconsciously initiated, there's often an edge-of-consciousness quality present. This expression (either portion) is frequently seen when an actor or performer (professional or amateur) "comes out of character" - within the first seconds post-performance, e.g., a feeling of strong relief (It's crucial here to think very loosely with respect to the idea of "performance" - for it can just be a small portion of a conversation - even in a business context). It indicates self-deprecating emotions with some level of embarrassment.

Moreover and often under-appreciated, this expression is also associated with individuals who have relatively high sincerity quotients. With what other personality trait is this behavior cluster seen?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3384: Donald Trump Repeats Controversial 9/11 Claims - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Donald Trump is making several claims regarding the events of 9/11 and what he alleges he witnessed that day. One of his assertions is examined below.

Beginning at 0:15 in the above video, Trump says, "... I have a window in my apartment - that specifically was aimed at the World Trade Center because of the beauty of the whole downtown Manhattan. And I watched as people jumped and I watched the second plane come in."

During 0:27 - 0:28 Donald Trump adjusts the microphone stem.

Starting again at 0:38, Trump continues, "Many people jumped and I witnessed it. I watched that."

During 0:39 - 0:40 he again adjusts the microphone stem

As with most politicians, Donald Trump is a very skilled liar. One example of his nonverbal behavior which supports this - is that he rarely displays a self-touching tell, more specifically a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) when he lies - yet here he commits a MAP surrogate. He adjusts the microphone in lieu of touching his face or another part of his body. The microphone of course DOES NOT need adjusting. Watch for this in the future - for it's one of Donald's Deception Displays.

Trump is either very good at suppressing these anxiety/deception tells - or more likely, he does not feel very much anxiety when he is lying.

Although this body language signal stands on its own (anxiety associated with a high likelihood of deception), it's interesting to also note what CNN's Sara Murray points out  - that Trumps apartment is about 4 miles from where the World Trade Center stood. Of course it's possible from that distance a person could watch the events through a telescope or binoculars - however if he had used his unaided eyes, it would have been impossible. This would have required visual acuity 5 times better than 20/20 - and no human being has ever come close to that level of vision. Moreover this would be only the acuity required to discriminate what would have be perceived as a tiny black spots. The vision required to differentiate a human being from the other debris at that distance would have to be much greater.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3383: Barack Obama and Francois Hollande Shake Hands - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Today François Hollande was a guest of Barack Obama. The French President is visiting Washington D.C. in an effort to build a stronger coalition in the fight against Daesh (aka Islamic State, ISIL, ISIS). Yesterday he met with David Cameron, Wednesday he will meet with Angela Merkel - and on Thursday the Mr. Hollande will meet with Vladimir Putin.

In the above image, Hollande and Obama are shown in a Handshake-Hug Hybrid. Note that although the two men are touching (and thus within each other's personal space - and more specifically, their intimate space) - and of course their heads are also quite close together - in contrast, their eyes are directed away from the other man.

The vast majority of the time - when we enter another person's personal space, our gaze naturally and rapidly averts. One exception to this strong tendency is with close family members or with others for whom we have considerable affection. Can you name any other nonverbal scenarios where this rule doesn't apply?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3382: Donald Trump's Mask - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Why is Donald Trump (or any politician) a good liar? One (of several) nonverbal reasons for his increased ability to deceive is his "mask". The less variability a person has in their facial expressions (or other body language signals), the less likely they are to be caught in a lie. Thus they have a "go to" or default facial expression which they use a disproportionately high percentage of time. This behavior is akin to a person putting on a mask and moreover helps them to suppress facial expression "tells" and therefore lowers the chances of being caught lying.

The image below is Trump's primary default facial expression - Donald's main "mask". Those individuals with Antisocial Personality Disorder (Sociopaths, etc.) have a much higher frequency of facial mask behavior.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3381: Ariana Grande, Flirtatious Body Language and the American Music Awards (PHOTOS)

Tonight Ariana Grande won the 2015 American Music Awards Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist. In winning, she bested Taylor Swift and Meghan Trainor.

This image captures Ms. Grande's body language display during her performance of her new song, "Focus" - and it's a very classic flirtatious nonverbal clusters.

Note Ariana is looking back over a raised shoulder (particularly a bare shoulder) with her head tilted slightly downward along with raised eyebrows. Such tilting of the head causes the eyelids to open to a greater degree and therefore it gives them a larger appearance - and bigger eyes are a universal quality of beauty.

Touching her thigh with her fingers is typically not a component of this cluster, however here it acts as a strong amplifier of Ariana's already provocative posing

In summary, Ariana Grande's  body language configuration in this moment is extremely flirtatious and strongly engenders protective instincts in most every man who sees it. And if you've been the recipient of this variety of nonverbal behavior - rest assured, the green light has been turned on.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3380: Adele at the BBC, When Adele was disguised as Jenny - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Adele recently went undercover to compete in an "Adele Impersonator Contest". All the contestants met and mingled before they sang. And when it was her turn - the other women had some nonverbal signs which were rather worthy of a closer look.

This woman was perhaps the first to realize what was happening.

Notice her eyelids are significantly widely opened - together with a relaxed forehead.

What's the significance of her reaching out and touching those next to her?

Another example of widely opened eyelids associated with surprise.

Note her classic "slack jawed" change occurs after the eyelids are opened.

Covering of the mouth (often very rapid) is a significant sign of emotional processing (Although the intellect knows what is happening - the emotional brain is still coming to terms with the fact that "Jenny" is really Adele).

Moreover, a very unappreciated phenomenon is that those individuals who, when surprised, frequently cover their mouths - tend to also have a higher sincerity quotient vs. those who less frequently perform this gesture.

Rapidly touching one's hands on the side of the face has the same meaning as rapid mouth covering - except if two hands are used - the level of surprise tends to be significantly higher

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3379: Tom Hanks regarding his Forrest Gump Voice - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Bilateral eye rubbing virtually always is a signal of a disparity - disparity between what is known in the intellectual brain versus what the emotional brain is trying to come to terms with. In his appearance recently on The Graham Norton Show, Tom Hanks displayed a fantastic example of this nonverbal emotional dissonance.

When describing the thought process for origin of Forrest Gump's voice, Hanks recalls the director, Robert Zemeckis, initially wanting Michael Connor Humphreys (the boy who played the young Forrest) to alter the idiosyncrasies of his voice. It was Tom Hanks' idea however, that he should change his to match voice of Humphreys. This brilliant moment of insight gave the film one of its many endearing qualities. And it's in Hanks' recounting of these events, when he illustrates another emotional component often seen with the bilateral eye rub - that of suppressing frustration and suppressing impatience. (1:16 - 1:17).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3378: Ben Carson Likens Some Syrian Refugees to "Rabid Dogs" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today in Mobile, Alabama - Ben Carson compared some Syrian refugees to rabid dogs and the need to protect one's children. Many have criticized the Presidential candidate for say this, believing his metaphor was both inaccurate and in poor taste. However what did Carson himself think about his statement? His body language speaks volumes.

At in the above video, 0:39 Dr. Carson continues:

".... and I'm going to call the humane society and hopefully they come and take this dog away and create sa-, a safe environment on again." [Tongue Jut at 0:49].

At the very end of the video (at 0:49) we see Dr. Carson display what is known as a "Tongue Jut". Here it is so brief, it's a form of a microexpression.

In this body language cluster-context, Carson's tongue jut indicates: "I've got caught", "I've been bad" or "I did a foolish thing"(Navarro). Dr. Carson believes he went too far here and he regretted this comparison as soon as he said it. What other nonverbal signals present in this video support this conclusion?

With what other thought-emotions can a tongue jut be associated when other simultaneous body language signs are seen (not present in this example)?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3377: Holly Holm's post-fight interview after defeating Ronda Rousey (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

After defeating a very highly-favored Ronda Rousey on 15 November 2015, there were a multitude emotions along with the corresponding nonverbal signals displayed by Holly Holm (UFC 193) One of these is highlighted here.

When a person is feeling strong emotions of grief, empathy, affection, post-fiero and love - in addition to kinesthetic thought-feelings - they will very often look down to their right during moments of particularly high intensity. Holly Holm did this repeatedly during this post-fight interview.

Depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered, this direction of gaze is very often a signal of sincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 3376: Liam Hemsworth, The Hunger Games and "Honest Anxiety" - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Liam Hemsworth carried Jennifer Lawrence's purse on The Great Wall of China - and you may find that part of this video entertaining. Yet what's more instructive, is to watch a professional actor such as Hemsworth - who is paid well to suspend our disbelief (and who's rather good at it) - when he's just being himself. That is to say, even those who are skilled at acting-lying, when they're back in their own skin, just being themselves - their body language projects their sincere feelings (e.g. they can't deceive any better than average).

At the beginning of the video Jimmy Kimmel says: "So this is the ah .... fourth now, and the most significantly, final time, you'll be traveling the World promoting The Hunger Games."

Hemsworth: "This is the last one."

Kimmel: "Is it bitter-sweet for you?"

Hemsworth: "Yeah, it is. Yeah I mean it's. You know, it's, it's, it's the end of a, a great journey and I think we all had a good time. But ah, I think we're just sad not to tour the World together. I think that's, that's one of the funnest parts of all because we're such good friends."

During the 0:11 to 0:15 segment we see Liam Hemsworth scratch/rub behind his right ear, first with his index finger (forefinger) and then with two fingers.

This rubbing/scratching on the "bump" behind the right ear (the mastoid process) is indicative of "honest anxiety". Said another way, this nonverbal signal transmits anxiety and quite importantly has a very low likelihood of associated deception

Therefore in this specific example, Hemsworth's verbal message is very congruent with his nonverbal signal (as well as with his paralanguage) - so in this context, Hemsworth has a high sincerity quotient.

There is a myriad of other nonverbal signals in this video - how many did you see? What if Hemsworth were scratching/rubbing his ear (rather than behind it) - what would that signify? In front of his ear?
