Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2835: Jay Carney Resigns - President Obama Shows Us a Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Yesterday President Obama announced Jay Carney's resignation. Josh Earnest will be the new White House Press Secretary.

In the video above (beginning at 0:06), as he begins this announcement, Barack Obama says, " ... um .... One of Jay's favorite lines is, 'I have no personnel announcements at this time' ..."

Just after the President says "um" and then for the five words he displays an ear screw (a variation of ear scratch or ear rub). When occurring simultaneous or just before (and occasionally after) a declarative statement such as this - an ear screw is highly consistent with deception. Now such a "little white lie" is probably acceptable to most people - after all Barack is trying to open with a mildly comedic line here. And yet POTUS still displays a highly characteristic nonverbal signal consistent with lying.

Conclusion: President Obama is not a good liar. If he (or anyone else) cannot pull off the "little white lies" - then the big ones are practically impossible. The chances of displaying body language tells indicative of deception are proportional to the ramifications of getting caught in the lie.

There's a myriad of nonverbals in this video - which other ones are particularly telling? What characteristics of the President's and Carney's hug are sincere? Insincere?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2834: LeBron James, Lance Stevenson and False Intimacy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

The Miami Heat won game 6 yesterday (117 - 92) and has thus made it to their fourth consecutive NBA finals. They will face the winner of the Oklahoma City Thunder-San Antonio Spurs series.

Back in game 5 there was a particular nonverbal scenario that most have never seen in the setting of professional sports. Lance Stevenson blew in LeBron's ear. This is distracting to be sure - yet not for the reason many may first think. NBA players are often close enough where they breathe on each other - yet this specific act is considerably different. Blowing in a person's ear is an intimate act (an overt sign of "false intimacy").

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2833: Edward Snowden & Neck of Fear - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTO)

In Part 4 of the video interview of Edward Snowden's recent interview with Brian Williams (opt ahead to the video clip of 6:42 in duration), the former Booz Allen Hamilton subcontractor to the NSA displays a subtle example of both a "Neck of Fear". This nonverbal is about 0.7 seconds in duration - so although it is very evanescent, according to strict definition this is not a Microexpression. The defined duration of this body language phenomenon is to a degree arbitrary. But for the purpose of this and similar discussions - it will classified as a "Near-Microexpression".

Snowden explains his first encounter with attorney turned journalist Glenn Greenwald as follows (beginning at 3:27):

"It was a, ah ..... a really intimidating moment. You know it was ah ... it was the most real point of no return .... because the minute you start talking to a journalist as an intelligence officer ah - on camera - ah - there's really no going back. That's ah - that's where it all comes together."

Just after Snowden begins, as he says, "...a, ah..." we see the right side of his neck tighten (sternocleidomastoid muscle) very briefly. This is a classic yet very subtle nonverbal signal of fear.

Mr. Snowden's verbal, nonverbal and vocal qualities (paralanguage) are all congruent. This triple-agreement cluster-context is a very strong indicator of sincerity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis 2832: Is Edward Snowden Telling the Truth? - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Note: This blog, its author or the content herein does not have or seek a political agenda. Today's post regarding Edward Snowden in no exception. Whether you think he is a hero or a traitor - or someone in between is irrelevant here. This is a forum to teach and study nonverbal communication.

Edward Snowden was telling the truth in this video. His sincerity quotient was high as was his confidence level.

Snowden's anxiety level was very low, his use of illustrators were high, no MAPs (Manipulators, Adaptors, Pacifiers) consistent with deception were present and no partial emblematic slips were displayed. Moreover Snowden's vocal qualities (paralanguage), verbal communication and nonverbals were consistent with sincerity and of a very high congruity.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2831: "Walking Contest", Anxiety, Mirroring and False Intimacy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In this brilliant video by Vania Heymann, he address the anxiety felt by strangers when walking beside each other - when in synchrony. This is an example of what in body language terminology is known as "mirroring". Whenever people who know each other mirror each other too exactly in time or configuration - it creates anxiety - and destroys rapport. In contrast, somewhat less exact mirroring can build rapport and is also a natural phenomenon and expression of intimacy between people who are in love, good friends, strongly bonded, etc.

Mirroring with strangers immediately creates a false intimacy and, as the narrator in Heymann's piece  points out - a distancing in space (or uncoupling in synchrony) then occurs. A lack of mirroring in effect, insulates us by increasing the psychological distance between us and others - while mirroring closes our interpersonal space and makes us feel vulnerable and metaphorically naked.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2830: Petro Poroshenko, Ukrainian Elections and an Hyper-Alpha Body Language Signal (PHOTO)

It appears that billionaire Petro Poroshenko has been elected as Ukraine's next president. And while arm separatists continue to create significant unrest in the eastern portions of the country, Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to respect the Ukrainian people's choice in the election.

Poroshenko, who made his fortune in the candy business, is show in this image with his hands in a configuration in what in body language parlance is known as a "Steeple" - and more specifically a "Mid Conventional Steeple" (This steeple is a mid-level one as opposed to one more highly displayed - at the upper chest or face, or near the waist which is a lower steeple).

When used sparingly and for short duration the conventional steeple is a strong assertive signal. However most people who use the steeple - end up over-using it - rather than displaying it rarely and essentially choreographing its use. In such over-steepling scenarios it backfires and sends signals of arrogance, condescending and patronizing emotional tones. This alpha nonverbal then becomes a hyper-alpha one. Many leaders make this crucial mistake - and thus destroy rapport rather than building it.

What nonverbal signals on the "Chocolate King's" face?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2829: Respect, Funerals, Memorials and Alpha vs. Beta - Body Language Tells (PHOTOS)

In the context of a funeral, memorial service, wedding or when meeting a high dignitary/senior religious figure - the hand-arm nonverbal configuration known as the "Fig Leaf" (with hands clasped in front of the lower abdomen or genitals aka "Genital Guarding") shows respect or deferential behavior (e.g. "I concede that I am the relative beta"). In these contexts this body language is therefore recommended - yet it usually is subconsciously driven behavior.

Along with the fig leaf hand-arm position - [an example of a MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier)] - when showing respect the body language cluster should also include a feet-together position. It is not possible to tell if all of these first responders in this memorial service (for those who died in the Moore Oklahoma Tornadoes) last year have their fee together - however the man second from the LEFT has his feet far apart.

In this context the fig leaf indicates several possible emotional interpretations. One is that the gentlemen who has his hands clasped behind his back feels a subconscious need to display alpha nonverbal signals because others of who may nearby. It is also possible that he did not have any respect for those who died - and thus has narcissistic personality disorder. Another possibility is that he has autistic tendencies and thus has a relative deficit for the natural use of body language in social context.

Many people look much too beta/demure than they should when outside the social-business scenarios mentioned above. In these other situations it indicates a low emotional comfort/low confidence emotional tone - but not so during a memorial service.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2828: Elliot Roger, Isla Vista/U.C. Santa Barbara Mass Shooting & Threat Assessment - Body Language and Threat Assessment (VIDEO, PHOTO)

The video above was made by Elliot Roger, the gunman who killed seven people and wounded thirteen more yesterday in Isla Vista, California near U.C. Santa Barbara. Like all mass-shooters and other mass-murderers there are warning patterns of nonverbal behavior seen here.

Mr. Roger displayed multiple examples of "Loose Forward Lip Purse".

This nonverbal is a strong and reliable indicator of clandestine disagreement (which he stated he had harbored for a long time) as well as a clandestine plan - and he believed he has a good chance of pulling off his plan. In addition this lip configuration signifies his belief that he is the alpha and others (his future victims) are the relative betas (clearly stated many times using slang and synonyms).

Many times in this video, Elliot Roger displayed one of the classic displays of contempt. Note the "snarl-like" configuration of his left lip and tightening of his mustache area.

Here we see one of the many displays of disgust.

Both contempt and disgust are amplified by the partial closure of the eyelids. And while Roger's eyelids appear to have a component of congenital droopiness (congenital ptosis), they do also display an additional dynamic partial closure.

Near the end of the video, Roger displays a "tongue in cheek". This nonverbal can have several meanings depending on the other body language with which it is clustered. In this context it is an alpha display signifying the emotion of "I just won".

While all of these nonverbal examples can be seen every day in those with no psychological problems - chronic displays of contempt and disgust are very often seen in those who perpetrate violent acts, terrorism and other mass killings. Knowing how to spot these and other emotions is a valuable tool in threat assessment.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2827: Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy - She was the Alpha, He was the Beta (PHOTO)

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wosniacki have provided a lot of nonverbal displays in the last several days - and this image is yet another fantastic example.

This photo was taken in London about a week before their break up. Note Wosniacki's feet are planted entirely on the ground. Notice also her knees and feet - and their distance apart. This is consistent with high confidence and an alpha dominance. Both McIlroy's feet and knees are quite close together - and his heels and mid-feet are also off the ground. This is highly indicative of a role-reversing display of low confidence and beta-submissiveness.

A similar configuration can be seen with each of their upper arm's as distanced from their torso's - McIlroy's are much closer while Wozniacki's are considerably further away and forward - again displaying an absolute and relative alpha over her then fiancé's beta emotional tone.

Rory is looking at his phone and probably reading a text; so his relatively beta (almost feminine) body language may have nothing at all to do with the couple's impending break up. However - when viewed in the context of the previous two posts (Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2825: Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki break off their Engagement - Body Language Tells and Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2826: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy Call Off Their Engagement - Body Language and Dominance) - this nonverbal cluster is highly suggestive of McIlroy's submissiveness and Wosniacki's dominant role in the decision making with regards to the couple's very recent break-up.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2826: Caroline Wozniacki & Rory McIlroy Call Off Their Engagement - Body Language and Dominance (PHOTO)

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy called off their engagement yesterday.

This image was taken one week ago in London. From a body language perspective it is notable because it shows a switch in dominance. Ms. Wozniacki's hand is on top in the dominant position - which of course leaves Mr. McIlroy's on the bottom (submissive and demure).

This hand-holding configuration is the opposite from the vast majority (96%) of male-female relationships - as well as numerous previous examples of Wozniacki and McIlroy. Thus the timing of Caroline's recent and new-found alpha emotional mindset strongly implies that she was the decision-maker in the couples break-up.

Temporary shifts (e.g. female alpha - male beta) in such hand-holding dominance signals who holds the cards regarding the subject of the latest discussion-disagreement.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2825: Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki break off their Engagement - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki broke off their engagement today. In the above video McIlroy says it is mutual. Based on the golfer's body language - what do you think? What follows below is a partial analysis of a video that's loaded with nonverbal signals.

At the 0:23 mark, McIlroy displays a quite significant anger tell with a prominent and very visible jaw jut after he says " ... we both thought it was for the best of us -you know - the best for both of us ..."

This mouth cover & near nose rub is significant for deception at the 0:39 mark as Rory (contrary to his declarative statement) absolutely does NOT think his form has been well.

While to some this nonverbal may resemble the first image above - it is a completely different emotion. This near-microexpression of regret appears at 0:45 just after he says he wants to "... I just want to, you know, dive straight into it ...."

How many displays of contempt did you see in this video?

What other nonverbals are exemplified here?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2824: Michael Jace ("The Shield" Actor) Arrested for Alleged Murder of His Wife - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Michael Jace, best known for his role as detective Julien Lowe on the television show "The Shield" was arrested today for the alleged murder of his wife, April Jace. According to several news sources, Jace has confessed to shooting her.

In the above image Mr. Jace is handcuffed. His central forehead is contracted and elevated - thus also elevating his inner eyebrows. Whenever significant sincere emotional or physical pain is felt - whether being experienced directly or secondarily for another person(s) or animal via empathy - the central forehead contracts. However - in these scenarios the body language of the mouth should ALWAYS take on a congruent expression - one of sadness, pain, fear, etc. - or combinations thereof. Michael Jace's mouth is configured in an expression of sadness.

The police officer's eyebrows are not elevated - rather they are pulled downward and inwards (towards each other). And although it is difficult to see in this low resolution image, his eyelids are partially closed and tightened. The officer's jaw (mandible) is pushed forward in a "Jaw Jut". The mouth's right corner is pulled up in a very specific expression many confuse with a type of smile - yet it indicates regret. His lips are dramatically thinned. This nonverbal cluster indicates a primary emotion of anger and a secondary one of regret.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2823: Kendall Jenner, 5 Seconds of Summer & One Direction at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards - Anxiety Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Kendall Jenner pulled a John Travolta last night at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards. She confused two boy-bands - the up-and-comers from Australia, "5 Seconds of Summer" (5SOS) with "One Direction". This is somewhat surprising as she used to date Harry Styles.

At 0:26 a subtle yet significant "Tongue Jut" is seen (more clearly visualized in video) - which in this nonverbal cluster-context indicates a self-deprecating "I just messed up" emotional mindset.

Depending on the other body language with which it is clustered the tongue jut can indicate what other thought-emotions?

During the 0:27 - 0:28 segment, Kendall Jenner commits a rapid "False Bow" or "Bow-Retreat" correlative with embarrassment (she also continues to blush) and is a form of one of many "Blocking Behaviors". It is helpful to think of this as a "temporary retreat" - similar to a turtle going in her shell - in order to partially collect one's emotions.

And although of low-resolution due to her rapid movement, a fear mouth can also be seen in this image.

Kendall's first Hair Adjust Behind Ear (HABE) nonverbal is seen at 0:28 as she is exiting from her bow-retreat is a body language MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) indicating Ms. Jenner's psyche is attempting to "Dialing up Her Alpha" - essentially saying, "I need to be more assertive".

A second, cross-body HABE (0:29 - 0:30) indicating a need for further climbing out of her beta abyss.

At the 0:32 mark (and again about 0.5 second later), Ms. Jenner displays an "Eyebrow Flash" - and in this nonverbal cluster-context signals, "What the #$%&@?" - which is of course directed at those operating the teleprompter.

During 0:32 - 0:34, an essentially one & one-half arm self-hug with continued blushing indicates a significant increase of her beta behavior, a lowered degree of confidence and drop in emotional comfort.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2822: Ludacris, Low Confidence, High Confidence and Contempt - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Ludacris hosted the 2014 Billboard Music Awards today in Las Vegas. By most accounts he did a great job. However from a body language perspective in this posed photo we can see several conflicting nonverbal displays.

Ludacris has a mild contempt expression. This is evidenced by a tightening and vertical contraction of his right "mustache area" along with a mild nostril flare. The backward tilt of his head/neck along with a bilateral partial closure of his eyelids up-regulates his degree of arrogance. Many would falsely his face as displaying a mild smile - yet it is most definitely not.

Looking at his feet, we can see that they are planted about a shoulder's width apart and splayed mild-moderately outward. This nonverbal configuration is consistent with high confidence and an alpha emotional tone - however it is not specific to either arrogant confidence or humble confidence.

The position of Ludacris's hands is incongruent with confidence. Known as the fig-leaf or genital guarding - this protective stance indicates a lower level of emotional comfort and projects a Beta persona (A subset of this body language behavior and exception to this tell exists in some law-enforcement organizations as many are taught to assume the "parade rest" or similar pose in some scenarios as it is felt that it allows greater access to one's weapons and diminishes vulnerability in a hand-to-hand attack scenarios).

Thus in this one deliberate and posed image we see arrogance-contempt, low confidence/beta persona as well as high confidence/alpha projection. Whichever of these emotions Ludacris should want to project is an important consideration - however regardless of his intent (can you tell what his primary underlying emotion is?) - deliberate but considerably contradictory body language exists in this moment.

What key nonverbals are seen in the featuring Ludacris below?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2821: Sara Bareilles, A Broken Wing, Emotional Comfort, and High Heels - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

This interview of the very talented Sara Bareilles just prior to the 2014 Grammy Awards contains a truckload of body language tells - a few of which are described below.

At 0:46 Chris Booker begins, "You don't seem nervous."

Bareilles answers, "I oddly enough don't feel nervous right now ...."

The "Broken Wing" of Bareilles' loose and flexed left wrist (0:49 - 0:50) indicates she is telling the truth about her lack of anxiety. The presence of this body language illustrator only occurs when a significant amount of emotional comfort is present. Although it is occasionally seen displayed by straight men - this nonverbal is much more common in women and gay men.

At 1:27 - 1:28, just after Booker says he has seen Sara perform at least 20 times, we see Ms. Bareilles scratch just to the right of her nose with her left hand. This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) seen in this nonverbal-verbal cluster context is a clear signal that she does not believe Mr. Booker.

At 2:05, just after Sara says, "... Oh, it certainly does not feel like a night off, let me tell ya that - No. Not when anybody is saying that I should wear high heels. That is not a night off for Sara Bareilles [brief chuckle then tongue jut] ..."

The tongue jut can indicate several thought-emotions depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered. Here it indicates that Sara REALLY hates wearing high heels. It is identical to what the tongue does when an infant spits out her puréed carrots. In other nonverbal scenarios, what else may the tongue jut signal?

What does Sara's lip pout indicate at the 2:06 mark?

Many other nonverbals are present in this video. How many do you see?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2820: Yusuf Yerkel, Turkish PM Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, Assault - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

On 13 May 2014 an explosion and subsequent secondary fire occurred in a coal mine near Soma, Manisa, Turkey. The fire lasted for two days. At the time of this writing at least 298 people have died and at least 80 have been injured. There are as many as 18 people still trapped inside and a rescue effort is ongoing.

Following this deadly disaster protests ensued. In this image, one of the protesters - who lost a relative in the mining accident, is being restrained by the parliamentary police - while being assaulted by Yusuf Yerkel, an aide to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan.

One of the most valuable and true observations describing human behavioral psychology states, "Rationalization is THE great human sport." (S.King)

It is much easier (and almost necessary) in order to hurt another person (physically or otherwise) once a person has negative emotions directed towards them. And although they are of lower resolution - we can see in these images the primary expression of disgust on Yerkel's face. His secondary (minor) emotion is anger.

Yerkel "needed" to feel disgust in order to kick and assault this protestor
