Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2802: Emma Stone & Jimmy Fallon Lip Sync Battle - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Emma Stone was recently on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She was there promoting her most recent film - "The Amazing Spider Man 2". However Emma's Lip Sync Battle with Jimmy was the true highlight of the night - and video of this performance went viral.

Jimmy songs were Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" and Styx's "Mr. Roboto". Emma's countered with "Hook" by Blues Traveler and her second was "All I Do is Win" by DJ Khaled. Emma won hands down.

A very interesting couple of nonverbal signals were seen right after Emma finished "All I Do is Win". Up until then she was "in character". As a skilled actor who uses the Stanislavski method, once she finished and slipped back into her own persona - Ms. Stone first displayed the "Social Etiquette Fear Face".

The social etiquette fear face is a lower level of fear manifested in the mouth and neck (note tightening and retraction of lips - down and with corners pulled back as well as a distinct tightening of Emma's neck muscles) - but not in the eyes.

Here it is a form of self-deprecating behavior - essentially saying "I went a bit wild there - didn't I?"

The lack of eye findings thus connotes significantly less fear. The social etiquette fear face exampled here lasts for about a half second - or perhaps a bit longer - thus it is a microexpression or slightly longer. But this expression may certainly last longer.

If the fear had been true fear, the eyelids would open widely. With social etiquette fear face, the eyelids commonly have a component of a suppressed smile - and given the context this is very expected.

A few seconds later, Stone displays a lateral Tongue Jut. The tongue jut (aka "Lizard Tongue" is of very short duration and is also and example of a microexpression.

The tongue jut may have different meanings depending on the other body language signals which is simultaneous with (or nearly so). These include: "I got away with something", "I've done a foolish thing", "I've been bad" or "I just got caught". It can also be self-deprecation or a sign of extreme excitement. Which of these emotional-thoughts apply in this moment?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2801: Adam Silver Bans Donald Sterling for Life - Alpha Body Language Tell (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Earlier today Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling for life from the NBA. He is not permitted to attend a game or a practice - or to make any decisions about the Los Angeles Clippers for the rest of his life. The NBA Commissioner also fined Sterling the maximum amount possible - $2.5 Million. In addition, Silver is seeking three quarters or greater consensus from the NBA owners in an effort to force Sterling to sell the basketball team.

There are many nonverbal signs in the video above of Mr. Silver's press conference. However there is one exemplified here that is rarely noted. Throughout this video (highlighted in three isolated images below) - Mr. Silver's mouth, lips and jaw display exaggerated movements. While there is certainly variation in such movements between any two people of the same culture speaking the same words - Mr. Silver's are amplified. It is not simply because he is trying to speak louder. This is a signal of an alpha emotional tone. People who display this body language/facial expression view themselves as dominant and are in the midst of asserting it.

In contrast, if Mr. Silver were in the company of the heads-of-state and other World leaders, his mouth, jaw and lips would never be moving in this manner.

Although not the case here, an even further exaggeration of these movements during speech is indicative of a patronizing and condescending mindset - and will very readily transmit such feelings.

There are also multiple examples of Mr. Silver thrusting his jaw forward - in what is known as a "Jaw Jut". This is a highly reliable signal of anger.

A Jaw Jut at 0:51 mark as Silver says "... deeply..." signifying the NBA commissioner's sincere anger.

1:16 mark as Silver speaks an exaggerated "....multi-ethnic..."

Mild Jaw Jut

More dramatic movements as Silver says "... within ..." at 1:27

More Jaw Jut (mild-moderate)

What other body language did you see during this video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2800: Richard Gere Plays a Homeless Man and a Caring Parisian Gives Him Food - Body Language of Sincerity and Empathy (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Recently Richard Gere, who was playing a homeless during the filming of his new movie "Time Out of Mind" (also starring Kyra Sedgwick), was given some food by a kind woman who didn't realize who he was or that he was in the midst of acting.

Karine Gombeau, a tourist from Paris visiting NYC, gave Gere the remains of her pizza. She did not know it was the famous actor until two days later when she saw a photo herself with Mr. Gere in a newspaper.

Later, when she was interviewed, Gombeau recalled her brief conversation with Mr. Gere -

"I said, 'Je suis désolée (I am sorry), but the pizza is cold.' "
"He said, 'Thank you so much. God bless you.' "

From a body language perspective Ms. Gombeau exemplifies in this image an important axiom. During the moment when something is being given (be it food, a job or a diamond ring, etc.) - eye contact will go up during moments of high sincerity. Depending on the other nonverbals which are also present, increased eye contact may also indicate a high empathy quotient.

Of course, as with all body language, care must be taken not to interpret signals in isolation.

What other nonverbal clearly visible in this example demonstrates a significantly elevated empathy level being felt by Ms. Gombeau?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2799: Magic Johnson Comments Regarding L.A. Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Alleged Racist Remarks - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

In the above video, Magic Johnson comments on the remarks which Donald Sterling allegedly recently made in a conversation with his then girlfriend. Anyone who objectively listens to the recording will reach the conclusion that - if it is in fact authentic - then the L.A. Clippers' owner is clearly racist.

Of course, Magic Johnson was specifically mentioned in the recordings - so many are interested in what he had to say. A body language analysis will also let us know what Magic is feeling. What follows is a partial discussion of the former NBA superstar's nonverbal signals:

At the very beginning of the interview, just before he begins speaking (0:06, 0:11 - 0:12), Magic Johnson displays a partial "Inward Lip Roll" (ILR). The inward lip roll signifies that the subconscious is trying to suppress the outward manifestation as well as the inward crescendo of emotions which are diverging far from baseline. The emotions can be positive such as joy - but typically they are negative emotions (e.g. anger and sadness).

At this instant, Magic's psyche is trying to prevent his anger from growing.

During the 1:46 mark, as he makes the statement, "... he shouldn't own a team anymore ..." - Johnson displays one of several classic signals of incredulity exampled here.

This disbelief is manifested by a unilateral (left sided) raised eyebrow and asymmetrical (same side) dynamic contracted forehead muscle [frontalis (pars lateralis)].

During the 2:01 mark, disgust is the primary emotion being felt. This is signaled here primarily by the tightening of Magic's "mustache area" and the flaring of his nostrils.

What other facial configuration displayed in this moment amplifies Johnson's disgust?

What is Magic's secondary emotion in this instant?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2798: Donald Sterling, Prejudice and Body Language of Contempt (PHOTOS, VIDEO, AUDIO)

Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was allegedly (voice yet to be definitively proven his) recently recorded in a conversation with his then girlfriend (V. Stiviano) making multiple prejudice statements (you can listen here to the recording).

Here are some of the comments that Sterling is alleged to have made:

"... It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?..."

"... You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want.  The little I ask you is not to promote it on that ... and not to bring them to my games...."

"... I’m just saying, in your lousy f***k*** Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people...."

"... Don't put him [Magic Johnson] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me.  And don't bring him to my games...."

In the image above, the NBA owner can be seen displaying a relatively subtle (e.g. 2.5 out of 10) display of contempt. This is often erroneously interpreted by many as a subtle and/or partially suppressed smile. It is not a smile. Contempt is a very specific emotion - occurring when a someone places another person or group of people beneath them and unworthy of consideration. Can you make the distinction between subtle (or moderate) contempt and a partial/suppressed smile? - Consistently? - And in real time?

Note also that Mr. Sterling's right forehead is contracted, while is left side is not. While this configuration is indicative of incredulity (which would be a common co-existing emotion with contempt) - a review of other images suggests that this is somewhat longstanding and is consistent with a peripheral cranial nerve VII palsy (facial nerve), (one common subtype is Bell's Palsy). Knowledge of this is of great import - lest one misinterprets his emotion-thought.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2797: Michelle Obama, a Ten Year Old Girl and a Résumé - Body Language of .... (VIDEO, PHOTO)

Yesterday in the U.S., it was "Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day". At a White House gathering, when Charlotte Bell (whose mother works for the Executive Branch) was called on by the First Lady, she said, "... My Dad's been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his résumé"  - and she handed it to Michelle Obama.

If we look carefully at Mrs. Obama's facial expression, what is the emotion she was feeling in the midst of hearing the assertive ten year old's question?

It was fear.

Michelle Obama felt fear. This was of course, a completely unexpected action - for who would anticipate a ten year old to pitch her father for a job ... and at the White House?

If any of us were in the first lady's shoes we would probably feel a similar level of (social) fear - but we would probably not recover as nicely as she did.

The first lady is of course human, thus a microexpression of fear when such a (contextually) embarrassing subject is raised is expected. Most would miss this body language however if they did not know what to look for - even with the benefit of video. Note her eyelids are opened considerably wider than baseline and the corners of her mouth are pulled subtly down and backwards. If this were a higher resolution image we would see signals of Mrs. Obama's neck tightening as well. With what other emotion is this facial expression typically confused?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2796: Olivia Wilde, Butter, Jon Stewart and the Tongue in Cheek - Body Language (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis became the proud parents of a baby boy yesterday - Otis Alexander Sudeikis.

In this video from late 2012 during her promotion of the film, Butter Ms. Wilde appeared on Jon Stewart's, "The Daily Show". There's a multitude of great body language in this interview, however what follows is an example and analysis of an oft misunderstood nonverbal signal.

At the 4:13 mark Ms. Wilde can be seen displaying a classic "Tongue in Cheek" nonverbal.

The tongue in cheek (isolated in this close up image) may indicate several different emotional-thoughts depending on the other nonverbals with which it is clustered - e.g. "I just won", sadness/grief, anger, "I gotcha" (you were caught), projecting sexuality, or even deception.

Becoming astutely observant of the other nonverbal signals simultaneously displayed (or nearly so) is extremely important - for these will give the tongue in cheek an entirely different meaning.

Intriguingly, tongue in cheek displays tend to be biased (idiosyncratic to the individual) to one side an alpha/positive context (e.g. I gotcha/I just won/you were caught, sexual context, an outright alpha display) - but they appear on the opposite side in a negative or beta scenario (e.g. anger, sadness, lying).

This tongue in cheek display is an "I just won/alpha" display as Olivia tries to suppress her joy at her upcoming joke - the pitch for which she is winding up for in this moment.

Congratulations Olivia and Jason. Savor every moment.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2794: Lupita Nyong'o's Speech on Black Beauty Essence, Body Language and Anxiety (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Most people were swept off their feet by the amazing newcomer Lupita Nyong'o for her role as "Patsy" in "Twelve Years a Slave". Her superb performance won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Earlier today People Magazine named her as the Most Beautiful Person of 2014.

In the above video, the world-class actress can be seen giving a speech at Essences 2014 Black Women in Hollywood awards. For anyone with even a modest empathy quotient it is a very moving speech. And she is an outstanding actor - very used to speaking in front of crowds and on television - and yet she is very human during this speech. How could she have improved? What could she have done differently?

The speech was very well written. The words were near perfect. Very few people could have read them more skillfully - and yet they were READ.

If Lupita were right next to me, I know she would say that she had all the content of the speech in her mind - and more importantly in her heart. So rather than READING the speech, if her notes contained only one word bullet points rather than sentences and paragraphs - it would have had a completely different style and feel - that of a "Conversational Speech". She would have glanced at one or two words (e.g. Prayers, God, Oprah or Alek Wek) - and in that instant she would have had words and sentences flow spontaneously - that maybe weren't quite as well crafted - but would have felt more conversational.

To members of the audience, a conversational speech feels as if they are being spoken WITH directly - like they are part of the dynamics of conversation (even though they're not) rather than being spoken to - ergo it feels conversational even though a speech is a monologue.

What the audience is left with in a conversational speech is a much stronger bond with the speaker - and the speaker will in turn enjoy the benefits of significantly greater rapport with her audience. However, in order to pull off a conversational speech - the speaker has to know the topic extremely thoroughly.

Because Lupita was reading the speech - her eye contact was significantly lower than it should have been. And when she looked up, as virtually everyone who READS a speech however skillfully - her eyes dart quickly up and back down again or they make short little sweeps. When the speech is one of conversational style and not memorized, there is ample opportunity to make eye contact (in a random pattern) with people in the audience for about three to four seconds apiece. This is also nonverbal communication magic when it comes to having the effect of making people feel as they are directly involved in the conversation. Even if you're in the audience and very aware of this phenomenon, it's power is still undeniable.

Notice also that Ms. Nyong'o rocked back and forth on her feet - repeatedly shifting her weight from one foot to the other. This is a clear body language signal of nervousness. Lupita is an Oscar winner and yet she still committed this faux pas. Of course she is human and she is allowed to have anxiety. Yet if she would have spoken in a conversational style rather than reading the superbly crafted speech - her foot rocking would have disappeared.

Congratulations (again!)
Ms. Lupita Nyong'o.

Although this is a low resolution image of Oprah Winfrey (in the audience during Lupita's speech) - what emotion she is trying to suppress in this moment?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2793: Emma Stone, Graham Norton and The Spice Girls - Body Language Tells (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Emma Stone recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show along with her boyfriend, Andrew Garfield and Jamie Foxx promoting "The Amazing Spider Man 2". What follows is a partial body language analysis.

As she is asked about her reaction to recent reaction to The Spice Girls, Ms. Stone briefly displays a bilateral lower leg rub (0:17 - 0:18). This MAP (Manipulator, Adaptor, Pacifier) is a common anxiety tell. It is more common, but not exclusive in women.

Emma displayed several signals of surprise (and mild shock) - although this one (during 2:15 - 2:16) is the most classic.

Note her eye lids are very widely open (although a moment before they were even more so, e.g.1:58, 2:08 - 2:09) and her mouth takes on a vertically oriented oval and NO TEETH are visible.

After she finds out that Graham was fooling her, Emma displays a classic "Puffer Fish" (2:20 - 2:21). This is very commonly seen before - however more often after a significant event. It is associated with a recent adrenaline surge - then drop off. It helps to down regulate the respiration, blood pressure and heart rate.

Emma's emotional and partial physiologic "collapse" (during 2:24 - 2:27) - although not a complete syncopal episode (fainting) - is common after a dramatic adrenaline surge and speaks to a high sincerity quotient.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2792: The First Woman to Run The Boston Marathon - Katherine Switzer and an Assault Warning Sign - Body Language (PHOTOS)

Forty-seven years ago, Katherine Switzer was became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon. Famously, the milestone involved more physicality than was otherwise expected during the grueling 26.2 miles.

One of the race co-organizers at the time, Jock Semple, jumped out of a media truck two miles into the race and yelled at Switzer, "Get the hell out of my race and give me those numbers!" His intention was to physically remove her from the marathon. Switzer's boyfriend, Tom Miller, came to her aide and knocked Semple away - preventing him from assaulting Switzer.

These images were taken in rapid succession and exemplify a very important threat assessment body language signal - the Jaw Jut.

In this more detailed image, Semple's Jaw can clearly be seen dramatically thrusting forward as he attempts to assault Katherine Switzer and pull her from the race.

In this moment, although in lower resolution, both Semple's (partially occluded by Switzer's left shoulder) and Miller's jaw can be seen clenching and jutting forward.

As her own emotions transition from fear to anger, Switzer's own jaw also juts forward.

The jaw jut is an extremely common nonverbal seen just prior to physical assault (with fists or firearms). This is particularly true when a simultaneous (or nearly so) fist clench is also present.

Congratulations to Katherine Switzer for her pioneering spirit, her bravery and her athleticism. She later went on to win the 1974 New York Marathon. Her personal best was in the 1975 Boston Marathon with a time of 3:07:25. Ms. Switzer was instrumental in raising the Women's Marathon to an Official event (1984).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2791: Sofia Vergara, Threesomes and Fear - Body Language & the Fading Gigolo (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

Sofia Vergara is seen above during a recent interview promoting the release of the movie, Fading Gigolo. The movie was released on 18 April and co-stars Sharon Stone, John Turtorro and Woody Allen.

Vergara, who is best known for Television's Modern Family, displays several microexpression displays of fear in this interview when discussing her role in a threesome sexual scene in the movie. This nonverbal is particularly well exemplified at the 0:48 mark in the video. This moment is captured below. Note the left side of Vergara's mouth pulls backwards and down - momentarily exposing her lower teeth. In addition, the rarely noted yet commonly manifested neck of fear is seen here as the left side of Vergara's neck tightens (Sternocleidomastoid and Platysma).

Did you see the other, more subtle facial expressions indicative of fear?

What components of a more extreme fear face are missing in this interview?

What other notable body language did you see exemplified in this video?

Nonverbal Communication Analysis 2790: Head Touch & Head Touch Surrogate - Body Language of Affection (PHOTOS)

When one's head is brought in contact with another - particularly when it's prolonged - it's a very strong affectionate body language signal. In the image above, a reunion between a daughter and survivor of the recent Korean Ferry sinking and her father is captured in such a moment.

An interesting nonverbal phenomenon is often displayed in the absence of another person however. Sargent Timothy D. Sayne was killed in action in Afghanistan on 18 September 2011. He was buried with at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. In the photo below, Thania, Sargent Sayne's wife is seen with her head against his gravestone. This action is not performed for physical support - rather for emotional connection, love - and especially affection. Here her husband's grave marker acts as a head surrogate. Despite being inanimate, such head-surrogate touching is also consistent with high sincerity quotients.

Gabriel García Márquez passed away yesterday. The Nobel Prize (1982) winning author of "Love in the Time of Cholera", "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and "The Autumn of the Patriarch" is often referred to as the godfather of Magic Realism.

All four of the images in this post capture different emotional variations of what is nonverbally termed "Critical Evaluation". Which two of these images also have a component of disgust present? (One is very subtle and the other is moderate disgust).

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2788: Oscar Pistorius Trial - Frustration & Anger - Body Language (PHOTOS)

An ex-police officer and an expert witness in the field of forensics, Roger Dixon, testified today in the trial of Oscar Pistorius for the alleged premeditated murder of Reeva Steenkamp.

In the image above, Mr. Pistorius can be seen with his left eyelid closed (his right is probably closed as well and virtually always is in this configuration). Oscar's head & neck are also flexed forward and he is pinching his upper nose (what many call the "bridge" of the nose). This nonverbal cluster is highly correlated with frustration and anger.

Nonverbal Communication Analysis No. 2787: Korean Ferry Sinking, Empathy and Emotional Processing - Body Language (PHOTOS)

The recent tragic sinking of the Korean Ferry gives an unfortunate window into a particular nonverbal behavior which few people understand. Covering of the mouth during moments of extreme sadness is not an attempt to prevent people from seeing us becoming emotional or to quiet the sound of our sobs. It is a subconsciously driven body language phenomenon signaling our emotional brain is processing a dramatic event and its ramifications. While the logic and intellect may know what has transpired - the emotional brain is having trouble grasping the events and it's trying to catch up.

This mouth covering often occurs very rapidly. Sometimes other portions of the face (e.g. cheeks or eyes) are also involved - or they are alternatively the primary areas being occluded - however the mouth is much more common.

Those who cover their mouths (or cheeks, eyes, etc.) when hearing and/or seeing dramatic news have significantly higher empathy quotients compared with those who don't display this nonverbal signal.

Blessings and condolences to the families and loved-ones of the victims of this tragedy.
